Former currency trader Dom D'Alexander found himself unexpectedly drawn to a passion project that would substantially alter his career trajectory. Selling currencies to hedge funds was intellectually stimulating but something he lacked any real passion for. His hobbies were always focused on his own well-being, leading him to delve into something combining his love for personal development and self-care. This eventually became Somble, a platform focused on empowering independent coaches in the HALO sector. Pete and Dom chat about the challenges and vision behind the brand, the importance of collaboration, ecosystem, and delves into the potential for synergies between studios and coaches. Listeners will also hear about the unique approach of Somble's Co-Founders and uncover insights into the evolving landscape of fitness and coaching. Regarding the critical importance of execution, Alexander states, "I wish somebody had beaten me over the head early with the fact that ideas are really a dime a dozen, and that execution and distribution are basically the only things that are going to matter when bringing something to life." Some key moments: Entrepreneurial journey: Dom's transition from finance to wellness. Business challenges: The frustrations faced by wellness coaches and studios. Platform and vision: Somble's aim to connect consumers with coaches. Collaboration & cooperation: Connecting independent coaches and fitness businesses. Customer discovery: Importance of understanding the needs of trainers and studios. Fitness industry trends: Use of tech, niche coaching, and multidisciplinary workouts. A few key takeaways: 1. Dom shares his background transitioning from institutional finance to becoming a C-Founder focused in the HALO space. 2. Somble, with Co-Founders Ian Waltz as CEO, Dom D'Alexander as COO, and Matt Barnett as CTO, is a platform aiming to unify the wellness industry and empower independent coaches and small instructor-run studios. 3. Collaboration and cooperation between coaches, fitness businesses, and local studios are highlighted as crucial components for creating a thriving ecosystem for independent coaches and fitness businesses. 4. There is a strong emphasis on customer discovery, execution, and distribution over ideas, and a focus on utilizing technology to drive business growth and create multidisciplinary workout experiences for consumers. DEAD RINGERS. THE FLY. VIDEODROME. SCANNERS. The films of David Cronenberg have delighted horror fans, grossed out audiences and challenged censors for the last five decades. His name was at one time cursed in the halls of parliament for using public film funding—Canadian tax dollars—to make movies like SHIVERS and RABID; films that earned him the moniker the “Baron of Blood.” They inspired controversy, but his films were profitable, and in Ottawa, just like in Hollywood, money talks. This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that has the power to Software companies over 70% more trial conversions with personalized sales and onboarding videos. My guest is Matt Barnett, Founder, and CEO of Bonjoro. Matt is the founder and CEO of Bonjoro. He is a Britisch designer by trade and loves two things: building great products and building a great culture. He started as a designer, worked as a consultant, did his MBA in 2012, and then co-founded not-for-profit group XTech Sydney in 2013 and Verbate, a video insight agency in 2014. That's where he stumbled upon a problem with reaching overseas customers in a simple and impactful way. What started as a sales hack for the Agency he was running, Bonjoro went from hack to side hustle to global business in 18 months, and now has a team across 5 continents. Bonjoro is on a mission to create a world free of spamming - a world where we build trust and love amongst customers by sending something meaningful that converts them for life. It's driven by its ethos of “Automate processes, but never relationships.” And this inspired me, and hence I invited Matt to my podcast. We explore the art of spotting when a business idea has potential and which does not. Matt explains the journey of how Bonjoro was born - and how he took it from an idea to a business that grows through word of mouth and virality. He shares some of his big lessons learned on how to fill his product roadmap with smart investments that create both scale and customer value. Last but not least, he articulates the importance of creating a brand from the start - and how that increases your chances of success. Here are some of his quotes "If every customer brings you two users, then you're like, 'Right - if we make them love us even more, and we activate them, then they'll bring us five." But how do we do that? How do you get the funnel growing faster? And that's not product. It tends to be time and relationships and the loyalty part. If you're passive with a great product, that's awesome, but people's chances of inviting others in is much, much lower. When you're a small business, you have to be active. You can't passively expect this to happen." During this interview, you will learn four things: How to push your R&D department to focus on the desired outcome, not the obvious output Why you should look at your customer funnel with a loyalty lens on, i.e., which customers can become a superfan - a micro-influencer Sometimes your smallest customers can drive the biggest revenue impact for you - indirectly. Why everyone on your team should feel the customer's pain - and how to go about that. Most testimonials on websites suck. You know the type, a contrived block of text spouting uninspired pleasantries by some loosely identified customer. They may serve some purpose, sure, but often fail to engage hearts, provide real value to a viewer, and drive action. So, what's the secret to gathering, and communicating effective customer testimonials? Let's find out in today's episode. In this episode we cover: A short intro to Casey and Bonjoro. Why most testimonials / reviews suck. What makes for an effective testimonial. Why video is more effective than text reviews. Why video quality matters. How businesses solicit quality reviews/testimonials without it seeming coerced or manufactured. How Bonjoro's new testimonials tool supports people to do this. Where in the customer journey he recommends businesses request reviews. How testimonials can be used once we have them. How people can take a look at Bonjoro and try it for themselves. Building great products starts with a strong desire to solve a problem you have encountered in your own experience. But there is more to it than that; you have to think about what makes it different, the value it brings to people, your brand's messaging, and much more.Matthew Barnett knows what it takes to build SaaS products that thrive. Matthew is the Founder and Papa Bear of Bonjoro, and today, he shares what SaaS founders need to do to develop products that people will love and help them grow successful businesses. In this episode, we discuss:Why are industry experts more likely to build successful startups?Biggest fears and challenges startup founders experienceHow can you drive customer loyalty? How should founders approach brand building? The Right Founder for the Right ProductIndustry experts are more likely to succeed when building a business. They are the ones who experience and understand industry problems, thus developing products that solve them is much easier.I think a lot of the most successful startups you see come from people who have a problem in a specific industry - Matt BarnettPrioritize Your Growth StrategyFrom day one, think about your specific growth mechanism, which depends on your company. Every business is different. Some are sales-driven, marketing-led, or ads-led. What works for one company doesn't mean it will work for you. I think it's extremely important…you have a mechanism that can do that - Matt BarnettHow Can You Drive Customer Loyalty? When people mention loyalty, they think about loyalty cards, discounts, and other benefits. However, loyalty is the ability to increase the lifetime value of your customers and generate advocacy, which leads to net new customers. If you nail loyalty, you increase the lifetime value of every customer. So every customer spends more and stays longer, and then you increase that by basing your customers as its growth channel - Matt BarnettYour Brand is More Than the LogoMany founders don't understand what a brand represents. Most just think about the logo and stop there. Besides visual elements, a brand is also how you talk to customers, what you stand for, your views, values, and people.A brand is basically like the external facing piece of your culture - Matt BarnettFor more interviews from the SaaS Origin Stories podcast, check us out on Apple, Spotify or your favorite podcast player!
