Arlie Adlington (award-winning audio producer) and Kate Leaver (Who's A Good Dog podcast) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Arlie's choice Twister. Twister is a 1996 disaster film directed by Jan de Bont with a screenplay by Michael (ER, Jurassic Park) Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin. It stars Bill Paxton as Bill, a retired storm chaser-turned weatherman and Helen Hunt as Jo, a meteorologist obsessed with chasing tornadoes and trying to deploy a tornado research device - they also happen to be ex husband and wife. Along with a supporting cast of twister perverts including Cary Elwes, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck, Jeremy Davies and Jake Busey they are in a race against tornados to successfully test Dorothy and her magic balls. Twister has a surprisingly low body count (high flying cow count) for a disaster film (the dog does not die) and also quite a low action rate apart from a couple of decent scenes - just about enough to sustain for its near two hour runtime. Twister is quite an usual film - flying cows - and it is also a very 90s film with plenty of unintentional hilarious moments and dodgy CGI. Scores for recommendability for Twister were pretty decent, less high for repeat viewing, mainly because of the long runtime but it still manages to score a respectable 3.39 overall.   [supsystic-tables id=250]   Episode #238 Crew Links Thanks to Episode #237 Crew of Arlie Adlington (@ArlieAdlington) and Kate Leaver (@kateileaver) from Whos A Good Dog Find their Websites online at https://twitter.com/northbanktalent And at https://twitter.com/_multitrack And at https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/whos-a-good-dog/id1586839321   Please make sure you give them some love More about Twister For more info on Twister, you can visit  Twister IMDb page here or Twister Rotten Tomatoes page here.   Final Plug! Kate Leaver (Who's A Good Dog podcast) and award-winning audio producer Arlie Adlington join Flixwatcher remotely to review Kate's choice Notting Hill. Notting Hill is a 1999 romantic comedy from writer Richard Curtis, starring Hugh Grant as bumbling Englishman Will and Julia Roberts as Hollywood actress Anna Scott who enters his life after a meet-cute involving orange juice. Is Notting Hill the best rom-com? Debatable for Kate and Arlie yes, for Helen definitely not. Views were mixed, trite and overly sentimental and controversial for its ethnic cleansing of an area of London famous for its Caribbean carnival event or is the character of Anna Scott actually really funny and Notting Hill a quirky take on the regular guy dating a celebrity?   [supsystic-tables id=242] The scores were equally as divisive with Kate and Arlie giving straight fives for recommendability and Kobi and Helen much lower. Its two hours plus runtime was also a turnoff and resulted in low repeat viewing score to give Notting Hill an overall rating of 3.89. What do you guys think? Have you seen Notting Hill? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below! Spiky, sharp, intriguingly dark and tender, full of pathos, fury and wit, Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason is a dazzling, distinctive novel from a boldly talented writer. For fans of Sally Rooney, Taffy Brodesser-Akner and Fleabag. 'A triumph. A brutal, hilarious, compassionate triumph.' Alison Bell, The Letdown ''I just adored this book. It's timely and dark and poignant and funny. It was filled with such eviscerating compassion and rage; I couldn't get enough of it. I inhaled it in a single weekend, unable to put it down. Meg Mason is a searing talent.' Kate Leaver, The Friendship Cure This novel is about a woman called Martha. She knows there is something wrong with her but she doesn't know what it is. Her husband Patrick thinks she is fine. He says everyone has something, the thing is just to keep going. Martha told Patrick before they got married that she didn't want to have children. He said he didn't mind either way because he has loved her since he was fourteen and making her happy is all that matters, although he does not seem able to do it. By the time Martha finds out what is wrong, it doesn't really matter anymore. It is too late to get the only thing she has ever wanted. Or maybe it will turn out that you can stop loving someone and start again from nothing - if you can find something else to want. The book is set in London and Oxford. It is sad and funny. 'This is a romance, true, but a real one ... as devastating and sharply witty as Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag.' Books+Publishing

Sunday 23rd June is International Women in Engineering Day. We hear from three female engineers about their routes into the industry. Why despite various campaigns to attract women is it still such a male-dominated trade? The Resolution Foundation Think Tank studied changes in pay, housing, taxes and benefits to see if it was still true that newer generations are better off than their predecessors were. It found under-30s are spending less than that age group did 18 years ago. Over-65s' spending has risen by 37%. But they also found a huge gender wealth gap for baby boomers. While men and women have similar amounts of individual net wealth until their 50s, a huge divide opens up after that. The report finds that women in their late 60s have just over half the wealth of their male counterparts. Jenni speaks to Laura Gardiner, Research Director for The Resolution Foundation, to find out why.Friendship in modern times: longing for closer ties in the digital age, forging close friends as family, and idealised female friendship in the media – is social media making us lonely, and do we have perhaps ever higher expectations of those real life friends we do have? How important are our friends and what expectations should we realistically have? The author Jessica Francis Kane, whose character in new book, Rules For Visiting, longs for closer ties and has high expectations of her few and distant friends; is joined by Natalie Lue of the Baggage Reclaim blog and podcast; and by friendship expert Kate Leaver, author of The Friendship Cure: Reconnecting in the Modern World and friendship columnist for Metro. As part of Radio 4's Four Seasons poetry we celebrate the summer solstice with the poet and academic Elizabeth-Jane Burnett. Your usual mixed bag this week: Cheddar Man, Nutella fights and Lady Doritos. It's the 100 year anniversary of the Suffragettes! We deliver to you some facts and a round-up of this week's celebrations. We discuss Kylie Jenner's secret pregnancy (her daughter, Stormi Webster was born this week.) How did the world's most famous 20 year old - Kylie has over 100 million followers and is the richest of all of the Kardashian/Jenners - hide her pregnancy from the paps for an entire 10 months? Is it yet another PR ploy; or a genuine bid for privacy from a young woman long uncomfortable with her own, inherited fame? Also today, some discussion of Woody Allen - mainly via some excellent journalism, links below - and the latest Hollywood MeToo, via Uma Thurman. This one's a little different though… it's more about Quentin Tarantino than it is Harvey Weinstein. And, a first: Tarantino replies, at length. Both articles, below, are well worth reading.Plus, a bit on food snobbery, after the wonderful writer and former Bake Off contestant, Ruby Tandoh, spoke out against the “classism and ableism” inherent in slamming ready-made meals. Choice is a luxury; and ‘wellness' is a concept that the working class can ill afford (there's also a bit of personal bias from Pandora, on this subject.)ReadingThe Friendship Cure, by Kate Leaver https://www.amazon.co.uk/Friendship-Cure-Manifesto-Reconnecting-Modern/dp/0715652524Why Woody Allen should be tried in court and not by public opinion, by Hadley Freeman for The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/global/2018/feb/03/actors-condemn-woody-allen-hadley-FreemanFeminism is excluding working class women, by Camilla Long for The Sunday Times https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/thats-right-sack-the-poor-grid-girls-only-the-rich-are-entitled-to-flaunt-their-bits-ctw9p6szwThis is why Uma Thurman is angry, by Maureen Dowd for The New York Times https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/03/opinion/sunday/this-is-why-uma-thurman-is-angry.htmlQuentin Tarantino responds to Uma Thurman http://deadline.com/2018/02/quentin-tarantino-uma-thurman-harvey-weinstein-kill-bill-car-crash-new-york-times-1202278988/Kylie Jenner has baby and seemingly grows way up, by Harling Ross for Man Repeller https://www.manrepeller.com/2018/02/kylie-jenner-baby-girl.htmlListening & WatchingJack Whitehall on Radio 4's Desert Island Discs http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09qb1hwLove Stories, by Dolly Alderton (Pandora's insertion, not Dolly's) https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/love-stories/id1343714594?mt=2Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - at cinemas now See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Welcome to a bonus episode of Ctrl Alt Delete, recorded live at the Soho Hotel after a screening of Home Again, a film with the amazing Reese Witherspoon playing the main character Alice Kinney. Recently separated from her husband, (played by Michael Sheen), Alice decides to start over by moving back to her hometown of Los Angeles with her two young daughters. During a night out on her 40th birthday, Alice meets three aspiring filmmakers who happen to be in need of a place to live. Alice agrees to let the guys stay in her guesthouse temporarily, but the arrangement ends up unfolding in unexpected ways. Alice's unlikely new family and new romance comes to a crashing halt when her ex-husband shows up, suitcase in hand. It's the perfect escapism film, to watch with mates and have a night-in. I also loved how unexpectedly funny it is.The film was written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer and produced by Nancy Meyers (who directed The Holiday and The Intern, both so good). The film is a modern romantic comedy about love, friendship, and the families we create - themes I wanted to explore further on the podcast. So after the screening, I interviewed my friend and author Kate Leaver, who's book The Friendship Cure comes out in March. She moved from Sydney to London post-break up and knows a lot about friendship, so I wanted to theme this episode around moving away from home, moving to a new place and starting afresh. Thank you to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment for making this live recording happen, and just so you know, the DVD and Blu Ray of Home Again is available now, from Feb 5th! Thank you also to the brilliant Shola Aleje who produced this live episode.*This episode is sponsored by Sony Pictures at Home*. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
