This week, Jordana's in France, but Sami is back from DC and catches Aleen up on her time at the DNC, including those Beyoncé rumors. Aleen shares news of her upcoming move and a fun interior decorating discovery with her daughter. The much-anticipated 2nd season of Tell Me Lies is dropping next week, but until then, Aleen is loving Industry (aka X-rated Suits). Bethany Frankel had a cringeworthy run-in with Danielle Olivera in the Hamptons and acted like she was too old to know who she was, but Sami and Aleen aren't convinced. Brittany Cartwright filed for divorce from Jax Taylor this week, which is yet another reason to tune in to season 2 of The Valley. And what is going on with the Kardashian-Jenners and their cryptic posts about tea? Are they launching a new product… or a podcast? Most importantly, it looks like Aleen may have been right about Kylie and Timmy. In other news, Sabrina Carpenter's new album is on repeat, but are she and Barry Keoghan still together (or were they ever? It's giving PR relationship). Congrats are in order for Hailey and Justin Bieber's new baby Jack Blues, and a tentative congrats to Lana Del Rey on her new relationship… do you think they met on one of his alligator tours? Ben Affleck also sparked relationship rumors with Kick Kennedy, which took us all down yet another weird RFK animal horror story. Our Betch of the Week is Lana for being one of the realest in the game, and we're sending Armie Hammer right back to the Caymans to escape the LA gas prices. Learn more about your ad choices. Katie Welch is the Chief Marketing Officer of Rare Beauty — the beauty products company founded by superstar musician and actress Selena Gomez. Rare Beauty sells its products online and in Sephora retail stores, and importantly, Katie does almost no traditional marketing: Rare is a true internet brand, that depends on social media strategy, influencer marketing, and community to drive sales. Specifically, the enormous community around Selena Gomez, who, again, is an international superstar with a fandom of her own. This kind of marketing is essentially new. Famous people making their own products and companies and using their online reach to launch and grow those businesses is a combination of art and commerce that is 10 – 15 years old at most, Rihanna's Fenty Beauty is only five years old, but it's redefined the industry and helped make her a billionaire. Some of the first big successes came from the Kardashian-Jenners including Kylie Cosmetics, founded in 2015, as well as Kim Kardashian's Skims, founded in 2019. I've been really curious about how these businesses work, how they reach their audiences and customers, how CMOs like Katie measure success, whether being the marketing executive for an super online celebrity-driven business feels different than being a traditional marketing person, and whether the ever-present risk of weird things happening online make her plan differently. Si & Veronica are feeling better for episode 212! Susie and Clayton have finally made it to Virginia (which is for lovers)! We all struggle to have that perfect parent/child relationship that the Kardashian/Jenners have. But sometimes it's harder than being born into wealth. It can often mean work, and no one wants to work these days... BIG NEWS! O'Neill starts us off with a bombshell: he had his first mountain lion sighting. He's getting closer to P-22. Slow and steady. To promote Eleanor Kerrigan's new album, "Lady Like", we review the track titles from it. Next, we discuss how a reality show powerhouse of a man destroys DeWitt in a squat competition. Spoiler alert: there's a special call from DeWitt later in the episode to discuss this, and he puts us in our place with some sage wisdom. Then, it's a first on the show: a drive-by hawking! Some dude in what is believed to be the UK filmed himself throwing a hawk out of a car to hunt and kill other birds. Is this cool? Lazy hunting? Hear our discussion on this important matter that is taking over the headlines in 2021. Then, we talk about what one of the Kardashian/Jenners gave her daughter for her birthday. It's a strange present. One that most of us got to experience for free (unfortunately). That leads to a discussion about celebrity spending habits and excess. After that, we talk about the man who was the baby on the cover of Nirvana's "Nevermind" album. It turns out, he didn't like being out there for the world to see and is now suing the band for damages. Danish talks about a documentary series he just watched on Hulu called "The Devil You Know". During that segment, we get a call from DeWitt to ask about his squatting prowess (remember that from the beginning - are you even still paying attention?). We finish by talking about Only Fans reversing their decision about banning adult content and we review a top ten list of the highest earners on the site. This week, Emma and Julie began by discussing parts of Caitlyn Jenner's interview from her recent appearance on The Skinny Confidential podcast. The discussion mostly surrounded her comments about Kendall and Kylie, as well as their differences and how those are perceived by the public. They then got into their typical weekly throwbacks, recapping season 3 episodes 9 & 10. They glazed over episode 9 briefly, as it was a lot of fluff and not much substance. (Khloe apartment hunting in NYC & Kris missing the days of caring for a baby.) Episode 10 centered around Adrienne Bailon's family meeting the Kardashian-Jenners for the first time. The entire group goes on a camping trip, and the difference in family dynamics are really highlighted. Rob eventually speaks up for Adrienne and the discomfort her and her family are feeling, so Khloé and the rest of the girls simmer down with their cursing and vulgarity. Emma and Julie drew parallels to their own lives, and reflected on how they viewed these antics as teenagers, when watching this episode for the first time around. Si & Veronica are joined by comPODre J.D. Capelouto for an election week distraction episode 137! We break down the craziness that goes into getting any of the new Ivy Park drop (J.D. was lucky to snag some). The Kardashian-Jenners continue to get flamed for having big parties for their bdays, but this time it was for Kendall. Megan Fox went in on her ex and how he is portraying his fatherhood compared to her motherhood on Instagram. Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson tied the knot and Meals on Wheels were the ones to break the news. Vee went “Yikes!” to the random Trump endorsements from Lil Wayne and Lil Pump (who Trump called “Little Pimp”). It is an even more personal yikes as Vee’s one tattoo is half dedicated to a Lil Wayne song… J.D. gives us his thoughts on Clare’s season thus far and how he is just as excited as us to welcome Tayshia to save the rest of this season. As our resident Arianator, J.D. helps us analyze “positions” and its standout songs. Join us for what is always a good time and leave us a rating and review for a shoutout! "Burritos are not even pretty enough to be in KHLO-C-D." This week we're giving all of our energy to the decidedly low-quality lunches we scarfed down in elementary / middle school. For the most part, we were both lunch box ladies, but Katie's brief introduction to steak fingers made this a necessary point of discussion. Ranking has made a comeback, minus the hideous garage echo of early quarantine and the Jonas™ scale. This time around, we're relying on another iconic set of celebrity siblings to guide us through this cafeteria chaos. Thank you Kardashian-Jenners for being of service. Stay tuned for debates on deli meats, milk micromanagement, and spaghetti stories. Baby Names? More like Baby James. How do your lunch choices pan out for your first born? Annie and Nick talk with cereal entrepreneur (!!!!!) Gabi Lewis, co-founder of the hit breakfast brand Magic Spoon about engineering a food for the future (a cereal that's super high protein, low-carb, no-sugar, and made from...milk?), plus his first swing in the food industry (he co-created the cricket-protein brand EXO with his college roommate Greg Sewitz). Of course, Annie and Nick also discuss the week's top stories, from the F-Factor Diet backlash to Matthew McConaughey-led meditation and, of course, a little news from the Kardashian-Jenners. In this episode we discuss why we compare ourselves to others, why it's important to talk about it, and how to refocus ourselves toward something more positive. Is comparison the thief of joy? Two white chicks, a black badass, and a whole lot of brutal honesty. In the wake of George Floyd's death and unrest across the country, Taylor and Emily sit down with fellow entertainment reporter Sade Spence for an open dialogue about the current state of race and its impact on pop culture -- and all of us. From singing the n-word to navigating cancel culture, and Hollywood's hypocrisy to wondering why the Kardashian-Jenners won't acknowledge their own black babies and partners, the conversation may not always be comfortable, but it's necessary.
This week Jamie chats with BFFs celebrity hair stylist Scotty Cunha and interior designer, Roxy Sowlaty (formerly of E!’s “Rich Kids of Beverly Hills). They talk about Scotty’s first big break touring with Miley Cyrus, everyone’s right amount of too much this week and Jamie calls Scotty out for not following her on Instagram. They then get into all the reasons you need to wear hand protection if you use UV nail lamps and sun damage. Then Roxy talks some juicy shit about a sketchy plastic surgeon that she had a consultation with, her canceled COVID wedding, laser lipo and, of course, Scotty’s hair product launch (Rose Rescue). Scotty shares his experience working with the Kardashian-Jenners and Jamie’s love of posting Kourtney TikToks. They end the episode by answering a few follower questions! On this edition of Parallax Views, Mike Watson, author of Towards a Conceptual Militancy, argues that there's liberatory potential in millennial cultural-production such as memes in his new book Can the Left Learn to Meme?: Adorno, Video Gaming, and Stranger Things. From the synopsis courtesy of Zero Books: "Taking in an array of cultural references from the contemporary art world, to cat memes, Stranger Things, the Kardashian-Jenners, Mad Men, Run the Jewels, and video gaming, Can the Left Learn to Meme? argues that there is positivity in millennial-era cultural production. Utilising Adorno’s unswerving yet understated hope in spite of the odds, Mike Watson embraces the abstraction of the new media landscape as millennials refuse to surrender to cynicism, by out-weirding even the world at large. They pose a radical alternative to the right wing approach of Steve Bannon and the conservative psychology of Jordan Peterson. Here, the cultural elitism of the art world is contrasted with the anything-goes approach of millennial culture. The left avant-garde dream of an art-for-all is with us, though you won't find it in museums. It is time the left learned to meme, challenging conventions along the way." Watson joins us to discuss the book as well as his observations of and understanding of the art world from an insider's perspective. Additionally, we take a dive into the ideas of Frankfurt School critical theorist Theodor Adorno, who serves as a major inspiration for Can the Left Learn to Meme?. From there we delve into the world of internet culture and memes, which have been seized upon by the right. Watson sees figures like Steve Bannon and Jordan B. Peterson as targeting online audiences and a sort of battle for the millennial mind taking place in cyberspace. We also discuss the relevance of the TV show Stranger Things to Mike's book, Adorno's concept of the shudder, the jarring webseries Don't Hug Me I'm Scared, vaporwave music, and more. On this week's episode, Emma and Julie are taking a walk down memory lane and reminding us all of all the brand deals, collaborations, and business ventures that the Kardashian/Jenners have been involved with over the years. They start with the deal maker herself, Kris Jenner, and move through all the siblings to break down all the deals you may or may not remember contributed to their net worths. They mention it all - Kim's deal with Sketchers, Rob's Arthur George sock line, Good American, Poosh, Kendall and Kylie's stint as authors, and of course the billion dollar Kylie Cosmetics domination. It's almost hard to believe where they all started, and where their empire has grown to today. We deliver to you some facts and a round-up of this week's celebrations. We discuss Kylie Jenner's secret pregnancy (her daughter, Stormi Webster was born this week.) How did the world's most famous 20 year old - Kylie has over 100 million followers and is the richest of all of the Kardashian/Jenners - hide her pregnancy from the paps for an entire 10 months? Is it yet another PR ploy; or a genuine bid for privacy from a young woman long uncomfortable with her own, inherited fame? Also today, some discussion of Woody Allen - mainly via some excellent journalism, links below - and the latest Hollywood MeToo, via Uma Thurman. Something that's been kicking around in our minds since the health world exploded with news of all the various and very significant ways that sleep improves your health, appearance, productivity and temperament...what about people who are in a sleep-poor time of their life? Specifically, what about parents? And especially what about the brand-new, first time parents who, so often having and raising their children away from their extended families and support networks, are flailing around in a sleepless sea, desperate for a moment or two of shut-eye? We thought it would be useful to speak to someone experienced in the art of infant sleep and, just as importantly, helping new mothers get the rest they need to recover physically from birth and breast-feed (if they so choose and they are able to do so). Moni Westenbrink is a trained midwife and kraamzorg nurse; i.e. a nurse employed by the Dutch government to provide 7-10 days of postnatal care to new mothers, in their homes. Swoon. She is also a mother, and the daughter of two Catholic parents with a list of siblings longer than the family tree of all the Kardashian-Jenners combined, meaning that she's been looking after brand-new baby cousins since she was 12. Not only that, she has also worked with private clients around the world, helping mothers recover from birth and helping little ones fall into a routine and learn to sleep for longer stretches. Needless to say, when it comes to new mamas and their babies, Moni Westenbrink knows good sleep, and how to help families get it. Tune in to understand why mother's sleep is just as essential as infant sleep for family health, why it can be especially hard for women in the West to get the rest they need after giving birth, and what new mothers and those who care about them can do to help sleep-deprived families get the sleep they need to enjoy their new additions, and their completely new lives.
