Stacy and Eric discuss various monthlong holidays like Men's Health Month, and Dairy Month: the good news is Eric has finally gone to the doctor/dentist, the bad news is dairy is the nemesis he chooses to ignore unless it's a documentary about Cheddar Man. Talk of Garfield puts Eric in a white-hot rage and leads him to confuse the show Whitechapel with a bodice ripper. They finally talk about conspiracy theories; what are they, ones of note, who perpetuates them, and which ones where proven true. Did you know about New Coke, liquor being poisoned by manufacturers during prohibition, and the E.T. game by Atari buried in a New Mexico landfill? Critical Thinking - Black History Month Special - Who is Black & Why it matters? (Part 2) Black Spy Podcast - Season 12, Episode 0002   This week's episode of the black spy podcast is a critical thinking episode for Black History Month, in which Carlton asks – who is it Black and why does it matter? Carlton looks at the politics of blackness including who has decided who is and isn't classed as “Black” through the centuries. Moreover, in terms of a phenotype, what do Black people look like. Carlton asks if its credible that Black people are only seen as one absolutely particular type of ethnic group with no variation of skin colour in nose shape, lip shape etc; whereas White people (Caucasians) can be of any hair colour blonde, dark, ginger to curly hair, to straight hair. They can have thin or thick lips, narrow, wide or hook noses and all forms of face shape. Moreover, the Europeans who ‘classified' the as so called races, even allowed people with very white and very dark skin colour to be classified as White, because they were from a people perceived a capable in the 17th and 18th centuries. These unscientific discrepancies between phenotype classifications can clearly no longer stand? Therefore in this episode, Carlton seeks to challenge this one sided view, which by the way isn't maintained when it suited the post 17th Century colonial elites, slaveholders, plantocracy and pseudo-scientists that proclaimed the inferiority of the so called Black (Negro) ‘race', and the superiority of the obviously flawed White race classification. Hence, Carlton explains why this outdated concept can no longer stand and why Black historical figures and empires throughout the ages need to be reclaimed! Carlton explains how being Black has been defined in various countries particularly the United states and how, just one drop of black blood was perceived to be sufficient to make a person legally and officially Black. This one drop was defined in many US states a person with 1/64th of a Black ancestor, 1/32nd Black ancestry, 1/16th or a minimum of 1/8th Black ancestry made a person Black. Additionally, this episode also assesses what Carlton calls the ‘Balance Theory'. Carlton's Balance Theory explains how Black, White and other peoples of Colour have had transmitted to them, by slave trade and colonial White rulers, that Black people are ignorant, lazy, childlike, feckless and uneducated, and that they have never invented or developed anything. They have also been told that Blacks are criminal and duplicitous. These anti-black views have been transmitted to all peoples for over 350 years, since the African Slave Trade, Colonialism up until at least the late 1970's. Carlton explores all these issues and many more. He assesses the effect on every day interactions with police, teachers or employers and others, who due to the extremely low expectation of Black people mentioned above, these important intermediaries, due to these attitudes see Black people as suspicious and of limited ability. Hence, what Carlton calls the ‘muck of ages' affects relations today. Finally, Carlton notes that this negativity against Black people has also been transmitted to Black people themselves, so they too suffer from the same prejudices brought about by the muck of ages. Note: The picture attached is a facial reconstruction of Jesus Christ by forensic reconstruction experts. The reconstruction is not dissimilar to that of the facial reconstruction first British man known as Cheddar Man, albeit Cheddar man is shown to be even blacker than Jesus. A near complete skeleton has been found in a cave. DNA sequencing has dated it to the Mesolithic Era of Great Britain (9,000 years ago). During that DNA sequencing it is also found that, in the same city, lives a history teacher who is likely related to Britain's oldest complete skeleton. But the plot twists don't end there! This podcast was written, edited and narrated by me, Finn Gray. It is a year-long project I am tackling for my silver Duke of Edinburgh skills award. Further details about each of the counties can be found on my website: https://www.countiesofengland.co.uk I upload transcripts, maps of the counties and information I didn't have room for in the podcast. Most weeks I use information from Matthew Engel's excellent book: ‘Engel's England' (Profile Books, 2014). Music is from Tribe of Noise and the track I use at the start and end of each episode is ‘Tiny People' by Magnus Moone.

Dr. Tom Booth specialises in analysing ancient DNA from archaeological human remains, teasing out all manner of information from diet and disease to migrations of people in the distant past. In fact, some of Tom’s recent research has even shed light on different funerary practices in the Bronze Age, revealing some fascinating discoveries about ways that people related to, or looked after the remains of their departed. (We first reported on this in a piece in the Prehistory Show #3. https://www.patreon.com/posts/prehistory-show-42771218) Tom's work is really bringing some clarity to the huge genetic shifts which took place in the major transition periods of the past and it’s remarkable how the study of ancient DNA is opening so many windows into the past. As is so often the case, we could have talked long enough to make half a dozen interviews. We hope you enjoy this one.

Sophie (age 7) and Ellie (age 5) go back 15,000 years to tell of the Mesolithic Stone Age. The Ice Age is over. The world has completely changed from the Paleolithic Stone Age and the woolly mammoths of our last episode. ----more---- There are new seas like the English Channel.  The era of animals like the Woolly Mammoth is over. Trees cover the land. Humans are still hunter gatherers. But they are now more seasonal. They are better at making tools, especially more delicate tools of stone. But they also use more wood like for example making canoes.   We learn how they are starting to keep animals for assistance, especially the Dog. They clearly love their dogs so much as they are often buried with them.   We learn about the stone age settlement at Star Carr in Yorkshire. We discover Britain’s first ever house, a mysterious floating platform over a lake, and some spooky sets of scary skull and antler hats.   But the girls really want to get to know an actual Stone Age man. So we meet Cheddar Man. Found 100 years ago his skeleton is the oldest skeleton ever found in Britain. The girls are astonished to learn how much we know about him just from analysing his bones. In particular, he had dark skin and blue eyes but his face is covered in a terrible scar.   The episode ends with the start of the Neolithic period which will be our topic for next week.   If you liked this episode you might like to listen to our episode on the Paleolithic period. Sophie (age 7) and Ellie (age 5) tell of the start of the Stone Age. Neanderthals, Woolly Mammoths and Sabre Tooth tigers roam the world for millions of years. But a new breed of humans, Homo Sapiens, comes out of Africa. Within a few tens of thousands of years they are the only human species left.----more----   We learn how early humans lived. We discover the Stone Age tools they use. We explore how to craft flint into useful tools like axes and even finer tools. We discover the food that Stone Age people ate. We explain different ways to light a fire. We learn that their diet and lifestyle was surprisingly healthy. We tell of the Stone Age Hunter Gatherer lifestyle and what it meant. We tell of their nomadic ways. We learn of the beautiful cave paintings that were made. We also have a proper look at the way in which early humans interacted with the famous Woolly mammoth.   We explore the impact that geography had. Firstly we learn about the Ice Age and its implications. Then we explore how the land masses were different then to now and how this facilitated migration.   We put the period in the context. Firstly we learn what makes the Stone Age different to the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. Then we learn what the relationship is between an Ice Age and the Stone Age. We explain how there are different periods of the Stone Age which sets up next week’s episode on the Mesolithic period.   This is the first of three episodes on the Stone Age, The next episode will focus on the Mesolithic period and explore the impact of the end of the Ice Age, how stone age people started to keep dogs and look at Cheddar Man. The final episode will look at the Neolithic period and show how humans settled down in places like Skara Brae and built monuments like Stonehenge.   This series of episodes is especially helpful for children studying Key Stage 2 / KS2 in English schools.

For our 100th episode, we welcome back science journalist Angela Saini, whose work deflates the myths we tell ourselves about science existing in an apolitical vacuum. With far-right nationalism and white supremacy on the rise around the world, pseudoscientific and pseudointellectual justifications for racism are on the rise—and troublingly mainstream. Race is a relatively recent concept, but dress it up in a white lab coat and it becomes an incredibly toxic justification for a whole range of policies, from health to immigration. It is tempting to dismiss white-supremacist cranks who chug milk to show their superior lactose tolerance, but it’s harder to do so when those in positions of power—like senior White House policy adviser Stephen Miller or pseudointellectual Jordan Peterson—spout the same rhetoric. The consequences can be more insidious, too: consider how we discuss the health outcomes for different groups of people as biological inevitabilities, not the results of social inequality. Drawing on archives and interviews with dozens of prominent scientists, Saini shows how race science never really left us—and that in 2019, scientists are as obsessed as ever with the vanishingly small biological differences between us. Sulphur belched out of vessels' smokestacks is a serious health problem for coastal communities around the world. Four hundred thousand premature deaths from lung cancer and cardiovascular disease and around 14 million childhood asthma cases annually are reckoned to be related to shipping emissions. The International Maritime Organisation has finally agreed to drastically reduce polluting emissions from 2020. Gareth Mitchell discusses with James Corbett of the University of Delaware the impact of the emissions reduction on health. The nearly complete skeleton of Cheddar Man was found in a cave in Somerset in 1903. He'e been in the news because experts in human face reconstruction have created an image of what he probably looked like based on new DNA evidence. Chris Stringer, Ian Barnes and Selina Brace of the Natural History Museum have all worked with Cheddar Man and they talk to Gareth about how the study of this 10 000 year old skeleton is part of a bigger project to understand how Britain became populated with waves of peoples from Europe in the Mesolithic and Neolithic eras. Scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems have invented a magnetically controlled soft robot only four millimetres in size that can walk, crawl or roll through uneven terrain, carry cargo, climb onto the water surface, and even swim in it. Professor Metin Sitti, Director of the Physical Intelligence Department at the Max Planck Institute, explains how it works and how he sees the future use of millirobots in medicine - in delivering drugs and targeting cancerous cells. Marnie Chesterton talks to Dr Lisa Wallis from ELTE University in Hungary about her work to improve the cognitive abilities of older dogs... using touchscreens.

Chris KP, Dr Jenny and Dr Euan join Doctor Shane in the studio. Woodpeckers, Cheddar Man and carnivorous plants round out the news.First guest on the phone is Mel Cosentino, a conservation biologist with a special interest in the impact of human activities on marine mammals from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.Second guest in the studio is Dr Erin McAllum, NHMRC Dementia Research Development Fellow. Her current research is focussed on dementia with Lewy bodies - a common form of dementia but one that is relatively under-researched. It has a large degree of pathological and symptomatic overlap with Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease and there is a growing school of thought that these diseases actually exist as a spectrum, rather than as separate diseases.

Your usual mixed bag this week: Cheddar Man, Nutella fights and Lady Doritos. It's the 100 year anniversary of the Suffragettes! We deliver to you some facts and a round-up of this week's celebrations. We discuss Kylie Jenner's secret pregnancy (her daughter, Stormi Webster was born this week.) How did the world's most famous 20 year old - Kylie has over 100 million followers and is the richest of all of the Kardashian/Jenners - hide her pregnancy from the paps for an entire 10 months? Is it yet another PR ploy; or a genuine bid for privacy from a young woman long uncomfortable with her own, inherited fame? Also today, some discussion of Woody Allen - mainly via some excellent journalism, links below - and the latest Hollywood MeToo, via Uma Thurman. This one's a little different though… it's more about Quentin Tarantino than it is Harvey Weinstein. And, a first: Tarantino replies, at length. Both articles, below, are well worth reading.Plus, a bit on food snobbery, after the wonderful writer and former Bake Off contestant, Ruby Tandoh, spoke out against the “classism and ableism” inherent in slamming ready-made meals. Choice is a luxury; and ‘wellness' is a concept that the working class can ill afford (there's also a bit of personal bias from Pandora, on this subject.)ReadingThe Friendship Cure, by Kate Leaver https://www.amazon.co.uk/Friendship-Cure-Manifesto-Reconnecting-Modern/dp/0715652524Why Woody Allen should be tried in court and not by public opinion, by Hadley Freeman for The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/global/2018/feb/03/actors-condemn-woody-allen-hadley-FreemanFeminism is excluding working class women, by Camilla Long for The Sunday Times https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/thats-right-sack-the-poor-grid-girls-only-the-rich-are-entitled-to-flaunt-their-bits-ctw9p6szwThis is why Uma Thurman is angry, by Maureen Dowd for The New York Times https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/03/opinion/sunday/this-is-why-uma-thurman-is-angry.htmlQuentin Tarantino responds to Uma Thurman http://deadline.com/2018/02/quentin-tarantino-uma-thurman-harvey-weinstein-kill-bill-car-crash-new-york-times-1202278988/Kylie Jenner has baby and seemingly grows way up, by Harling Ross for Man Repeller https://www.manrepeller.com/2018/02/kylie-jenner-baby-girl.htmlListening & WatchingJack Whitehall on Radio 4's Desert Island Discs http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09qb1hwLove Stories, by Dolly Alderton (Pandora's insertion, not Dolly's) https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/love-stories/id1343714594?mt=2Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - at cinemas now See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
