Join me this time as I chat to ‘recovering people pleaser' Natalie Lue - author of The Joy of Saying No, and founder of Baggage Reclaim, one of the longest-running self-help blogs in the world.    Most of us (as with our own parents) will have been raised during The Age of Obedience - socialized (especially if we identify as women) to be good and compliant - little wonder then that so many of us exhibit people-pleasing behaviours.    Perhaps it hasn't been a huge issue for us before, but perimenopause impacts on our ability to ‘multitask' in the way we might have managed before now and for many of us holding up our people-pleasing tendencies can become exhausting, even debilitating.    Natalie talks us through the five different styles of people-pleasing: gooding, efforting, avoiding, saving, and suffering - how these tendencies might have arisen in the first place, and helps us to identify which style we most identify with. The chapters that focus on the five styles also highlight ‘things to watch out for' and some ‘quick shifts' to help the reader start changing their behaviours.    The later parts of the book provide a framework for instituting healthier boundaries and troubleshooting when we might get pushback from others or indeed from ourselves! Natalie also suggests invoking ‘the power of the pause', and explains the difference between a ‘hard no' and a ‘soft no' - and when we might want to use each of them.    Last of all we discuss why saying ‘No' to some things opens up space for us to say ‘Yes' to the things we truly value and find joyful.    I'll leave you with this little nugget of wisdom from the book:  “Every time you do something from a place of guilt, fear, or obligation, it always leads to resentment. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon.”   The Joy of Saying No is out now, published by Harper Horizon, and you can find Natalie at www.baggagereclaim.com and https://www.instagram.com/natlue    You can also find us over on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/middlingalong_podcast/ and you can listen to past episodes at www.middlingalong.com   It would mean so much if you'd subscribe, rate, and review us to share the love and help others find the podcast too!  You can also find me at https://www.instagram.com/managingthemenopause  or at www.managingthemenopause.com where we offer 1-1 coaching and workplace training.  Get your free 'Guide to your GP appointment' at https://www.managingthemenopause.com/free-resources

Hey team, this week I'm talking with Natalie Lue about her book, The Joy of Saying No. Natalie is the author of the popular relationship and self-esteem blog Baggage Reclaim, as well as the host of The Baggage Reclaim Sessions podcast. With ADHD, we can often end up as people-pleasers, always putting other people's needs above our own. And while being helpful is a great trait, we also need to make sure that we're taking time for ourselves as well.In our conversation today, Natalie and I discuss how to get out of people pleasing and work on setting up boundaries to help keep us on track with what we really want to be doing.Support me on PatreonFeel free to ask me a question on my Contact PageFind the full show note at HackingYourADHD.com/136This Episode's Top TipsPeople pleasing is about suppressing one's needs, desires, expectations, feelings, and opinions to prioritize others' needs and avoid negative consequences.By people pleasing, we create unspoken contracts, and this can lead to frustration when the other party does not fulfill their end. We are often dropping hints instead of being direct about our needs because of our fear of rejection or negative consequences. While it can be hard to say no, it is vital that we are using our no to help us set boundaries that will help us curtail our people-pleasing and allow to prioritize our own well-being.

How might your life be different if you'd gotten comfortable saying no in your earliest days? No to other people's opinions about everything from education to careers to relationships. No to someone else telling you what to prioritize and how to spend your time. No to people you've never met offering their opinion on what you should or shouldn't do, then tell you how they think your choice worked out.How would your life be different, if you'd gotten okay with choosing for you, and not just for acceptance or obligation? And, how might you reclaim it, if you started getting clear on when and what to say yes or no to from this moment on? And, rid yourself of the need to please? That's what we're diving into with today's guest, Natalie Lue, as a self-proclaimed recovering people pleaser who's spent the past nearly two decades unwinding the need to please and reclaiming freedom and ease. And that might be a very conscious thought in that moment, but often it's more of a feeling that we have that we just almost automatically respond to it by saying yes.We like to make people feel good, and that means different things to different people. But in that moment, even though we might already know, I really, really don't want to do that, we make that person feel good by letting them believe that that's what we want to do. We like that. We like being thought of as nice and helpful and as unselfish and good. And these prompt us to say one thing on the outside and have a totally different thing going on internally. I think it is a habit." On Boundaries "I wrote this book because I genuinely had discovered the healing and transformative power of saying no and having boundaries. And I make a point of saying that because I think that people see boundaries as saying no and telling people what to do. And a big thing that I learned about having boundaries was boundaries are about being more of who you really are. Because then we're operating from a place of integrity, authenticity, and honesty." On Your People Pleaser Entourage "What people discover when they start saying no is that they possibly have a people pleaser entourage, certain people in their life who benefit from them not saying no. Celebrities sometimes have that group of hanger-ons. And even though they're blowing all their money none of these hanger-ons point that out because they don't want to stop the gravy train. So a lot of people pleasers discover there are certain people who are really reliant on you just going along with things and that can feel very uncomfortable initially. What they also discover though is that a lot of the things that they were nervous about saying no to aren't really that big of a deal." ___________________________ About Retirement Wisdom Living well is the best revenge. Today, we have the MOST special guest—this woman is my HERO, and her books changed my life. Her name is Natalie Lue; she's a podcaster, speaker, artist, and writer of well-known books such as Mr. Unavailable and the Fallback Girl, a book that means so much to me I can basically recite it. Like so many women, Natalie had a litany of problems that included bad boundaries, toxic relationships, and a penchant for emotionally unavailable men. Until everything changed in 2005, when a crippling disease and the breakup from a barely-there guy triggered an awakening, igniting the desire to fight back. She wrote down her experiences and documented her journey, which led to self-publishing five best-selling books and creating Baggage Reclaim, including online courses, over 16,000 blog entries, and a podcast that has helped millions of women become "reclaimers" in over 140 countries. Through it all, her mission remains the same: if she can help even one person avoid what she went through and support others who have struggled with abandonment, rejection, trauma, people-pleasing, emotional unavailability, and feeling "not good enough," she's making the world a better place. Natalie Lue is a thought leader in relationships. Her no-nonsense, compassionate, and humorous take has garnered a following in over 140 countries, and she's been featured in The New York Times, NPR, and the BBC, to name a few. She's the author of Mr. Unavailable and the Fallback Girl, The No Contact Rule, The Dreamer and Fantasy Relationship and Love, Care, Trust & Respect, which has sold 140K+ copies, and her podcast, The Baggage Reclaim Sessions, has over 2 million downloads. Harper Horizon is publishing her next book, The Joy of Saying No, in October 2022. Aside from her self-help blog, Baggage Reclaim, she is also the founder of the kids' lifestyle blog Bambino Goodies. Born in England, raised in Dublin, Ireland, she's based in South East London with her husband, two daughters, and crazy cockerpoo. She left advertising to become a full-time blogger for the past 13.5 years. She's the former relationship columnist for In The Moment Magazine and has spoken at numerous conferences and given talks at companies including Amazon and InTouch in the U.S. Her current work centers around people-pleasing, boundaries, mindfulness, and creativity. Kerry Brett and Natalie Lue cover a lot of ground. In my opinion, Natalie is a brilliant writer who channeled this epic book and had the unique and perfect skill set to put it all together. She is all about helping people pleasers, perfectionist and over thinkers to really declutter their emotional baggage. We talked about life, or what she calls Professor life, and how we can navigate some of the different experiences and lessons and challenges that we have. She shared so many insights around work; what happens when we find ourselves in unfulfilling work scenarios or working relationships? And if you are a manager or leader, what you can do to really start to take some time to learn your team and to learn them as individuals so that you can support them better? Natalie Lue honours her late grandmother Pinchy Lue.   In today's podcast comes Natalie Lue honours her grandmother who sounds like she was a powerhouse.  Pinchy Lue came to the UK in the Windrush era and quickly used her tenacity to create safe communities for black people facing the hostility of the British public and systems.   Natalie refers to her grandmother taking up space and doing work that was required to do so.  Natalie notes that her grandmother's hard work and the demands of being a mother meant that she did not have much time to herself before she passed away suddenly in her 70's.  For Natalie this was a message for her to make sure she takes care of herself whilst she is alive, fit and well to reap the benefits.   About Natalie Lue: Natalie Lue, 42, is a writer, podcaster, speaker and artist who's been blogging for over fifteen years. [373] How to get more followers on any social media platform

Build Your Online Audience with Janet Murray

Want to sell more of your products or services online? Getting more of your ideal customers/clients to follow you on social media can help - a lot.  But how do you increase your social media followers? Do you need to use different strategies for different social media platforms e.g. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter or Instagram? And how long does it take to grow your following on a particular platform?  That's exactly what I cover in this podcast episode.  {Click on the player above to listen to the podcast episode and/or read on for a detailed overview. Scroll down to the bottom to read the show notes including all the links mentioned in this episode.} 1.Share compelling content  Think about the people you follow on social media. The people whose posts always seem to pop up in your Facebook or Instagram feed. The accounts you actively check out to see what they've been posting lately.  You don't follow them because they post boring updates about their products/services. You follow them because they inspire, entertain or even challenge your thinking. In other words, they make you FEEL something.  Now think about your own account. Are you posting compelling content that makes people feel something? Or are you putting out posts so you can tick social media off your to-do list. If you're posting dull updates about your products/services, whimsical reflections about what you did at the weekend and/or 'must do' tips no one ever comments on, why would anyone want to follow you?  If you're not getting much engagement on your content - amongst the followers you already have - that's a sign you need to change something.  After all, if you can't get the people who already know, like and trust you to comment on your content, why would anyone new want to follow you?  For an example of someone who is publishing excellent social media content that inspires people to follow her, check out  copywriter Jo Watson on LinkedIn. Want to get more engagement on your social media posts? Check out my social media engagement playbook. 2. Don't follow the rules  If you're trying to build your following on a particular platform, don't feel like you have to do what everyone else is doing. In fact, sharing content that challenges the ‘norm' can be a great way to stand out.  For example, Baggage Reclaim founder Natalie Lue's following on Instagram only really took off when she stopped worrying about ‘posting pretty pictures' and starting posting hard-hitting quotes from her blog and podcast. As Instagram is a visual platform, this was a brave move on Natalie's part - but doing the opposite of what everyone else was doing - and doing it consistently - is what helped her reach her first 10k followers. 3. Spend more time on other peoples' accounts than on your own What's the first thing you do when someone new comments on one of your posts - a name you don't recognise? You go and check out their profile of course. And that's exactly what other people do when you comment on their content. They just can't help but check you out.  This is why something as simple as making a list of your ideal customers/clients and committing to spending half an hour a day commenting on their content can be so effective.  Alternatively (or additionally) you can use the Gary Vee $1.80 strategy.  Step one. Find the 10 most relevant hashtags in your niche and follow those hashtags Step two. Reach out and comment on the top nine posts in each of the 10 hashtags Step three. Continue to like and comment on posts each day The $1.80 strategy gets its name because you're giving your two cents on nine posts for 10 hashtags every day. If you add that up, it equals $1.80 per day. 4. Use hashtags on all your posts As Chris Taylor explains in how to grow your Instagram following to 27k - fast, hashtags are like the index in the back of a non-fiction book. People search hashtags to find content on the most relevant topics to them - just like they would if they were looking something up in a non-fiction book. While expert opinion varies, current advice commonly suggests that using up to 30 hashtags on Instagram (which is the maximum), three on LinkedIn, two on Facebook and two on Twitter is the optimum number.  You could even create your own hashtag and awareness day like dog photographer Kerry Jordan did. This helped her go viral on Twitter. 5. Cross-promotion  Running joint competitions can be a great way to get more followers. For example, dog photographer Kerry Jordan hosted a joint competition with Quirky Campers founder Lyndsey Berresford and added 1.5.k new email subscribers, along with tons of new social media followers, to her audience.  6. Collaboration  Creating content for or collaborating with other business owners e.g. guest blogging, podcast interviews, Facebook Lives, Instagram takeoevers can be a great way of getting in front of other peoples' audiences. This will help you grow your social media following. Be smart about who you collaborate with though. It's best to target people with a similar or slightly larger audience than your own - ideally those who have a similar audience to you, but serve them in a different way. That way, there won't be a conflict of interest. If you do want to target the big hitters in your niche, think carefully about how you can add value to them. If they've already built a large online audience, they probably don't need to get in front of your audience, so why would they want to collaborate with you? So before you ask, think carefully about what's in it for them. If your ‘pitch' is all about you - and what you hope to gain from the collaboration - they're far less likely to say ‘yes. 7.Secure press coverage Getting press coverage can be a great way to increase your online following. For example, Baggage Reclaim founder Natalie Lue gained 2k followers after she was featured in Cosmopolitan magazine recently. However, stories like this tend to be the exception rather than the rule. While it's rare to get thousands of followers from a single magazine article or radio/TV appearance, over time, regular press coverage will help you grow your following. Find out: how to get press coverage for your business.  8.Work with bloggers/influencers Asking bloggers/influencers to promote your products/services can be a great way to grow your following. Ideally they need to have a larger audience than your own. But they don't need to have a massive audience for this to be effective. This can either be done on a paid basis or in exchange for free products/services. Find out more about working with bloggers/influencers. 9. Speak at live events Every time you stand up and speak in a room of your ideal customers/clients, you will attract new social media followers. So if you don't mind public speaking, why not give it a go? Find out how to land more speaking opportunities. 10. Post the links to your social media channels everywhere The more places you post the link to your social media profiles, the easier it will be for people to follow you. So make sure they're on your email signature, website, any landing pages you create...and basically anywhere you show up online. Sunday 23rd June is International Women in Engineering Day. We hear from three female engineers about their routes into the industry. Why despite various campaigns to attract women is it still such a male-dominated trade? The Resolution Foundation Think Tank studied changes in pay, housing, taxes and benefits to see if it was still true that newer generations are better off than their predecessors were. It found under-30s are spending less than that age group did 18 years ago. Over-65s' spending has risen by 37%. But they also found a huge gender wealth gap for baby boomers. While men and women have similar amounts of individual net wealth until their 50s, a huge divide opens up after that. The report finds that women in their late 60s have just over half the wealth of their male counterparts. Jenni speaks to Laura Gardiner, Research Director for The Resolution Foundation, to find out why.Friendship in modern times: longing for closer ties in the digital age, forging close friends as family, and idealised female friendship in the media – is social media making us lonely, and do we have perhaps ever higher expectations of those real life friends we do have? How important are our friends and what expectations should we realistically have? The author Jessica Francis Kane, whose character in new book, Rules For Visiting, longs for closer ties and has high expectations of her few and distant friends; is joined by Natalie Lue of the Baggage Reclaim blog and podcast; and by friendship expert Kate Leaver, author of The Friendship Cure: Reconnecting in the Modern World and friendship columnist for Metro. As part of Radio 4's Four Seasons poetry we celebrate the summer solstice with the poet and academic Elizabeth-Jane Burnett.
