The history books may lead us to believe it's the grand successes that shape our world, but what about the failures? The epic disasters, the inventions ahead of their time, and the plain bad ideas – surely they have a place in humanity's tale, too? If you've ever wondered about the wins that weren't, comic artist and editor Kel McDonald has the graphic novel for you. "Failure to Launch: A Tour of Ill-Fated Futures" compiles comic artists' favorite flops throughout history (illustrated in each of their unique styles) into one astonishing anthology.
In this special episode of Transcending Comics, we warmly welcome renowned writer and artist, Kel McDonald, to discuss their adventures in the vibrant world of web comics and traditional print comics. Listeners of the show may recognize Kel from print comics like Buffy - The High School Years, Misfits of Avalon, and Adventure Time, or their long running web comics like The City Between, You Are the Chosen One, and Sorcery 101. We also dive into Kel's unique fascination with folklore and werewolves, as we discuss their Kickstarter campaign for their latest comic, Murky Water - a futuristic urban fantasy story from their popular series, The City Between. Join us as we delve into the techniques behind creating multi-dimensional characters while considering today's dynamic political climate, narratives that inspire, and the charm and complexities of web comics. This episode is a treasure trove for comic enthusiasts seeking a deeper understanding of the stories behind their favorite series. Kel McDonald and Alina Pete Discuss Their New Anthology Graphic Novel, The Woman and the Woods and Other North American Stories, that is now live on Kickstarter. The fifth in a series of graphic novel anthologies that spans the globe, The Woman and the Woods and Other North American Stories, inspired by original Native North American tales is now live on Kickstarter. Kel McDonald, Alina Pete and Kate Ashwin (who was not able to make the interview) in association with Iron Circus Comics along with the help of nearly a dozen other creators brought to life The Woman and the Woods and Other North American Stories, which after only one day on Kickstarter has nearly tripled its original goal! This was an enlightening conversation as to how the series came about and what we could expect in purchasing these books especially across the continents. The most exciting part in being a contributor is that this trio didn't try to nickel-and-dime everyone with their contributions as the most expensive package is only $70!
