Patricia Martin introduces the concept of persona fog — a civilizational malady born from a decade of curating ourselves for algorithms, where our online persona becomes load-bearing and our true self becomes hard to access. She explains why AI may become the most colossal persona fog machine we've ever encountered, capable of getting you, amplifying you, and optimizing you until it authors versions of you that you never intended. And she offers a counter-move: self-determination, integration, and becoming the editor-in-chief of your own identity. Tom Rath challenges the conventional wisdom of follow your passion, arguing it centers the self instead of contribution and relies on a tiny pinhole of life exposure. Drawing on his new book, he reframes purpose as something manufactured daily — in the lab of our daily choices — and shares a simple, practical heuristic, what's the point?, that he uses multiple times a day to reorder his life around what matters. He also opens up about living with cancer for over 30 years, post-traumatic growth, and why you should never fully retire from contributing. Together, Martin and Rath offer a dual lens on the AI era: how we're being fragmented and performed, and how we can rebuild our lives around contribution, daily choices, and the people who truly see us.

How To Understand Our Sense Of Self Amongst The Ever Changing World of Tech, Speed, & Transformation w/ Cultural Analyst Patricia Martin

How do you view your sense of self? Do you feel more or less understanding of who you are? How about those around you, friends, family, and others? Do you sense them as feeling more or less stable regarding themselves and their place in the world? I think it's worth considering, and I feel a continued shift toward insecurity in an of ourselves, culturally. I have kids from 13 to 30 years old, from middle school to grad school, and I see and hear of consistent quandaries vs self and identity. But I'm 55 and even amongst my peers I feel there are struggles. My guest today has been researching this issue and as with so much of the human condition, feels our current age of tech and speed and constant transformation is having an effect on our sense of self. Patricia Martin is a cultural analyst and author whose insights have appeared in Harvard Business Review, The New York Times, Slate, and Psyche Magazine. She hosts the popular podcast, Jung in the World, as in Carl Young, and she is the author of four books including her most recent, and my focus here, Will The Future like You? Reflections on the Age of Hyper-reinvention. In the book, Patricia asks, “What if the harms of living an increasingly digital life go beyond undercutting our attention spans or blunting our social skills? What if it cuts deeper, to the core of who we are and who we know ourselves to be?” In this episode we explore the challenges that tech and the internet impose on the human psyche and discuss the processes that make us who we are. We also address three conditions Patricia cites as unraveling who we are: persona fog, chronic self-doubt, and cascading crossroads.  As is often the case, I hone in on understanding who we are outside of what we do and how we have grown to measure and judge our sense of self. Much has been written about the ill effects of our over-reliance on our on-life life with endless content, algorithm-driven polarization and pressure to publicly present oneself.  In this podcast, our guest, Patricia Martin, author of “Will the Future Like You: Reflections on the Age of Hyper-Reinvention,” argues that the damage goes even deeper.  It is eroding the ability to form and sustain one’s identity.  Are we hyper-focused on presenting a version of ourselves that will get likes and friends in a virtual world or have we done the hard work to figure out who we are at our core?  What makes all this more difficult is the fact that many of the institutions designed to help us foster that growth and understanding of our identity are crumbling.  We’re reminded that identity is formed in three ways–how we see ourselves, how others see us, and our will to shape ourselves.  The balance in this triad is now skewed and leading to a host of issues for the generations growing up in a digital world.

Patricia Martin on identity, algorithms, and the quiet politics of the inner self In the digital age, life online increasingly involves shaping and presenting versions of the self—across platforms, in real time, and often multiple times a day. Over time, that performance begins to influence how identity is formed and understood. In this episode, Jen Taylor-Skinner speaks with Patricia Martin, author of Will the Future Like You?, about how the internet is reshaping the relationship between the inner self and the public persona. Drawing on more than a decade of research, Martin explains how the “persona”—the version of the self presented to others—has become a form of currency in the attention economy. As more energy is directed outward, access to the inner resources that support decision-making, adaptation, and self-definition can become more limited. The conversation explores the psychological strain of constant performance, the subtle ways platforms influence behavior, and the broader implications for identity and agency in an AI-driven future. At its core, this is a discussion about self-determination—what it requires, what undermines it, and why it remains essential in a rapidly changing world.

Psychotherapist Daniel Shaw survived a decade in a cult — then spent 30 years helping victims of traumatic narcissism heal. He talks with host Patricia Martin about the mechanics of subjugation, why “no contact” isn’t always the answer, and how reclaiming dignity supports recovery. Keywords: Narcissism, narcissistic trauma, cult, psychology, recovery Daniel Shaw, LCSW, is a psychotherapist trained in psychoanalysis as well as in trauma-informed psychotherapies, including Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment (TIST). He is in private practice in New York City and in Nyack, New York; and Faculty and Supervisor at The National Institute for the Psychotherapies in New York. In his book Traumatic Narcissism: Relational Systems of Subjugation, published by Routledge in 2014 for the Relational Perspectives Series and nominated for the prestigious Gradiva Award, Shaw introduced the traumatic narcissism theory. Shaw's theory focuses on how the “traumatizing narcissist” manipulates victims, causing them to be fearful and insecure at the same time as they are becoming more and more dependent. Unlike with theories of pathological narcissism that focus on treating people with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Shaw's work focuses on helping victims of traumatizing narcissists recover their faith and trust in themselves. His book Traumatic Narcissism and Recovery: Leaving the Prison of Shame and Fear was published in 2021. In 2018, the International Cultic Studies Association awarded Dan the Margaret Thaler Singer Award for advancing the understanding of coercive persuasion and undue influence. A third book, Traumatic Narcissism Theory: A Contemporary Introduction, will be published in 2026. Shaw has for many years been teaching groups of mental health professionals how to understand and use the traumatic narcissism theory to help not only cult survivors, but survivors of all kinds of traumatic narcissistic abuse. This episode is part 2 of our interview with Hilde Lynn Helphenstein. Part 1 "Know thyself"—from Socrates to Shakespeare, this wisdom echoed across centuries. But the digital age is turning it inside out. As online influencers rise to fame, persona is overtaking the self. The obsession with self-representation has eclipsed the drive to be true to oneself. What does it mean to live your life as someone else? In this two-part interview, host Patricia Martin talks with the infamous Jerry Gogosian—real name Hilde Helphenstein—about the hidden psychological costs of her seven-year experiment living as her persona and how she clawed her identity back. This episode is part of a new series, Jung in the World B-Sides, where we go off-road to explore the rugged psychological terrain of our current culture. "Know thyself"—from Socrates to Shakespeare, this wisdom echoed across centuries. Watch the video of this interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqN8oLeQQaQ Hilde Lynn Helphenstein is a visual artist, digital storyteller, and the creative mind behind @jerrygogosian, a popular satirical Instagram meme account that critiques and comments on the global art world through viral images, videos and text pieces. It has since transformed into a community and platform. Patricia Martin, MFA, is the host of Jung in the World. Patricia Martin and Connie Zweig discuss the nature of shadow work. Before doing shadow work, we live an unexamined life – overeating, criticizing yourself or your partner, blaming someone, procrastinating – which leads to uncontrollable, self-sabotaging behaviors. Connie Zweig, PhD is a retired Jungian therapist and author of Meeting the Shadow and Romancing the Shadow. Her award-winning book, The Inner Work of Age: Shifting from Role to Soul, extends Shadow-work into midlife and beyond and explores aging as a spiritual practice. Her book, Meeting the Shadow on the Spiritual Path: The Dance of Darkness and Light in Our Search for Awakening, extends shadow-work into religion and spirituality. Patricia Martin, a 1998 graduate of the Hoffman Process, has spent 30 years studying people and ideas that change the culture. She is the podcast host of Jung in the World. and is at the forefront of curating ideas of technology, culture, and humanity. Listen in as Patricia and Liz converse about the Hoffman Process, the healing that happens when we bend toward the Light, and how resiliency is the medicine for our chaotic times. Patricia came to the Process because she saw, firsthand, how a friend had changed by doing the Process. She saw her friend's radiance and wanted to "have what she was having." She says she arrived at the Process "on her knees." Using a metaphor of growth and photosynthesis, Patricia speaks eloquently of the nature of the Process and the Light. When enough patterns, stories, beliefs, and identities are transformed, the true nature of who we are can find the Light again. What Patricia recalls was the most healing during her Process was finally being able to grieve the death of her father who died when she was 10. Her mother became very depressed and Patricia became a parentified child - expected to take on parental duties at too young an age. As someone who has studied ideas that change the culture for decades, Patricia notes the chaotic nature of these times. She says that we are going through "the death of meaning" right now. This is what happens right before a renaissance - or re-birth - takes place. Patricia suggests that we can navigate these times with more serenity if we clear away the debris from our inner world. In short, what we do at the Process, is this clearing away. It is this death and rebirth that paves the way for a personal renaissance in our lives. More about Patricia Martin: Patricia Martin has spent 30 years studying people and ideas that change the culture. Currently, her focus is on the digital culture and our changing sense of self. She is the author of three non-fiction books on cultural trends and holds an MFA in writing from Bennington College and an MA in Irish Culture and Literature from the University College, Dublin. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, Slate, PBS, and Huffington Post. She is certified in medical narrative from Duke University. Patricia is a graduate of the Jungian Studies Program at the C. G. Jung Institute of Chicago where she teaches writing and hosts the popular podcast Jung in the World.
