We've been there, and we've got you covered! In this episode, we chat with Dr. Kelly Fradin about the pediatrician's role in ADHD Diagnosis and Care. MEET DR. KELLY FRADIN Kelly Fradin is the Director of Pediatrics at the Atria Institute in NYC, where she works with leading experts to bring innovations in preventive care to their members and underserved populations. Her new book, Advanced Parenting, seeks to support parents in navigating their children's challenges. AFFILIATE INFORMATION We talk A LOT about executive function and what it takes for our kids with ADHD to plan and execute essential tasks in their lives. But what about us? The mental load of parenting is real, and there is SO MUCH we have to use our executive functions for. One of those things is meal planning. What does everyone like? What will my kids eat? Which family member can have dairy, and which one can't have gluten? The list goes on and on. We know nutrition is important, but balanced meals take a backseat between school, therapy appointments, activities, and more. That is why we are loving Hungryroot. They offer “good-for-you groceries and simple recipes.” We have loved having one less thing to worry about. As always, we want to help you, so we've got a code for 40% off your first box. It's easy to get overwhelmed by your child's behavior, numerous possible interventions, school struggles, medication trials, and your feelings about all those things when you have a child with ADHD or autism. And we can't live our best lives, or help our children live their best lives, when we're overwhelmed and trying to do too much at once. “We're living in systems that make it hard for [parents of ND kids],” says Dr. Kelly Fradin. That inherently brings more difficulty to parenting complex kids. In this episode, Dr. Fradin shares strategies on both coping with the emotional aspects for parents and helping our kids develop and grow in their own time. It's a process, and Dr. Fradin is here to help you with it.

Special guest: Dr. Kelly Fradin: Many of us have been there. We walk out of an appointment with our child's doctor or teacher and we feel concerned—and a whole host of other feelings from fear to anger to sadness, confusion and of course, love. We all hope that our children are healthy and cruise through life fairly unscathed- so when reality hits and we hear that our child has common challenges like ADHD or learning disabilities or more severe challenges like feeding issues, asthma, food allergies, anxiety or depression, we can become alarmed. As we may flip into roles beyond the typical parenting caregiver to medical scheduler, diagnosis researcher, health advocate and more- we may find that money, time, access and a feeling of calm is in short supply. What can we do to cope with and talk with our kids about challenging medical diagnoses and how to proceed through life with one? For this, we turn to Dr. Kelly Fradin. Of all the skills we have to learn as parents of medically complex children, one of the most difficult is often just finding a medical team that you trust, and that trusts and respects you as well. When it comes to dealing with doctors and other specialists, it can sound like they're speaking a different language, and we are often coming to the table from two very different perspectives. So in today's episode, Dr. Kelly Fradin, MD shares with us how we can better communicate with our child's medical team and advocate in a way that feels less frustrating. She offers some amazing advice on how to navigate getting second opinions, how to ask questions that get to the root of the issues at hand, and even how to find those seemingly rare physicians who are willing to go above and beyond for our children. If you've been trying to find better ways to work with your child's medical team, this episode is for you! And a big thanks to this episode's sponsor, MOOG Medical, maker of the Infinity pump. When the reality of COVID set in last March, we were all trying to figure out how we were going to cope without childcare in addition to the stress and anxiety of living through a scary pandemic. Dr. Kelly Fradin, a pediatrician and mother of two, watched many parents panic and wondered how she could help. As we were all bracing, doing less and gearing up for the worst, Dr. Fradin decided to write a book, Parenting in a Pandemic, as a guide to help us all through the unknown. Dr. Fradin remains a reliable source of scientific data based advice for parents through her Instagram @adviceigivemyfriends. This episode is full of practical advice and tips for parents trying to navigate trips to the grocery store, playdates, the playground, childcare, cousin visits and so much more.
