Dr. Stephen Storage, a child psychiatrist, discusses the key stages of child psychological development and the impact of family dynamics and early childhood experiences on a child's mental health. He explains that there are four stages of development: infancy (0-2 years), early childhood (2-6 years), middle childhood (6-12 years), and adolescence (12-18 years). Each stage has a developmental task that the child must master, and if they don't, it can lead to issues later in life. Factors such as attachment, trauma, and adverse childhood experiences can shape a child's psyche and impact their relationships and mental health as adults. Trauma shapes the biology of the developing brain, leading to changes in brain activity and blood flow. The impact of trauma on the brain can be addressed through various therapies, supplements, and lifestyle changes. Genetics play a significant role in mental health conditions, with conditions like ADHD and autism having a high heritability. The three pillars of brain health are sleep, exercise, and nutrition. Social media can have negative effects on the developing brain, leading to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and ADHD. However, social media can also be a platform for connection and spreading awareness about mental health. It is important to set limits on social media use and ensure that the content is interactive and educational. Play is crucial for the psychological development of children, promoting problem-solving, creativity, social skills, emotional regulation, and confidence. Parents should be aware of the signs of mental health struggles in their children and foster open communication.Amen Clinic@drstevenstorage@therunningwinemom_

Data on child and adolescent mental disorders across the globe are limited, but prevalence rates vary from 8 to 24%, with treatment gaps up to 99%. In this breakout session, we will explore cultural aspects of child mental health across the globe. How helpful are our “western” diagnoses for children and adolescents in the Global South? Does autism, trauma, depression, etc. look the same across cultures? Are our therapeutic approaches relevant and sustainable? How do we build the capacity of local providers and encourage Christians to provide care and address stigma? Session recorded on Friday, November 10th during Session Block #5 at 4:00 PM EST ; speaker: Heleen Yoder Session webpage: https://www.medicalmissions.com/events/gmhc-2023/sessions/addressing-child-mental-health-needs-across-cultures
In this episode, I dive deep into a concerning trend in child and adolescent psychotherapy: the use of video games in therapy. I address an email from Carolyn in Vermont, who asks about therapists using video games to engage "difficult" clients, often using person-centered language to justify this approach. I express my strong concerns about this practice, arguing that it dilutes the essence of therapy and may stem from laziness. I emphasize the importance of emotional engagement in child therapy, especially from a child-centered model, and highlight the potential harm of increased screen time for children who may already be addicted to video games. Drawing from my book on reducing screen time for children, I discuss the neurobiological impacts of excessive gaming and screen use. I stress the importance of returning to foundational therapeutic models rather than seeking "innovative" approaches that may compromise effective treatment. I also touch on the global recognition of screen addiction, citing examples from China's strict regulations on youth gaming. I conclude by calling on therapists to become advocates for children's health and well-being by educating parents about the dangers of excessive screen time and actively monitoring screen use during consultations. I emphasize that this is a critical issue that requires our immediate attention and action. As a teacher and mother to a child with autism, Elizabeth Callahan is all too familiar with flaws in the Virginia mental health care system. “I see the longevity of it, and there's just so many holes,” Callahan said. Callahan's son was diagnosed by a developmental pediatrician at the onset of his symptoms, which included speech issues, she said. He went to occupational therapy for years until COVID-19 halted in-person visits. Her child's therapist quit during the pandemic because “she said she would make more on unemployment,” according to Callahan. Te Whatu Ora's district service manager Deborah Selwood admits this demand in growth means only the most severe cases can be seen with any consistency. The physical condition of the current community treatment facility - Princess Margaret Hospital - is only compounding the problem. However, the construction of a new treatment facility - Kahurangi - is nearing completion, with community teams scheduled to move in next year. Deborah Selwood, Te Whatu Ora's Child, Adolescent and Family mental health service manager, joins Kathryn to discuss.

Reassuring is the stickiest and the sneakiest of the parenting pitfalls. Let's talk about getting out of the reassurance loop!
I appreciate this question from a parent who's been listening to the podcast and says she doesn't mind being stuck in the Parenting PItfalls and wanted to know what I had to say about that. My answer might surprise you.
Since anxiety doesn't really have a cure -- because anxious brains are gonna be anxious -- what can parents expect from successful child anxiety treatment?
On this week's episode we do a quick dive into the controversies around the PDA diagnosis then jump to how it relates to anxiety treatment. You can check out the PDA webinar I mention on the show by going to ChildAnxietySupport.com/demands and use the code PODCAST to get 50% off the $27 training.

In this special episode of the Play Therapy Parenting Podcast, I had the privilege to interview Jason Reid, founder of Tell My Story (www.tellmystory.org) and Choose Life (www.chooselife.org). May is Mental Health Awareness month, and Jason, who lost his 14-year-old son to suicide, is determined to reach every parent and every family about the conversation they need to have with their kids. Jason's mission has enlarged from informing parents about the signs of suicide in kids, to overall mental health awareness in kids and adults. This week we talk about how child anxiety is always a family systems issue and how we can shift the system by shifting our own behavior whether or not our child is motivated to change.
This week I talk about anxiety in the context of a post traumatic stress disorder diagnosis and discuss how it should be addressed. I mention EMDRIA.org in the podcast and wanted to be sure to include a link. You can also read more about the other treatments I mention here: TF-CBT (this links to a PDF published by The National Child Traumatic Stress Network) What is PCIT? While the answer to this question is out of my professional scope of practice, I was able to find information in a literature review specifically about the member's question in regards to vitamin D, which you can find here: The Influence of Vitamin D Intake and Status on Mental Health in Children: A Systematic Review We talk about that and also use this episode to discuss the importance of taking a multipronged approach to the treatment of child anxiety and why that's important.
This week I explain why we need to reframe the question "How do I explain to my anxious child that they don't need to be scared" to "How do I help my anxious child cope with their fear when they are scared?"
In this episode, we are excited to be joined by Dr. Jaqueline Nesi. Dr. Nesi is a psychologist, professor, and founder of Techno Sapiens, an up to date resource on research on technology and teenagers. Dr. Nesi discusses with us a recent statement by the U.S. Surgeon General that age 13 and under is too young for children to be on social media, and that there could be dangers related to too much screen time. We also look at the potential role of social media on mental health. Furthermore, we discuss the importance of understanding how scary “headlines” regarding social media research can impact parenting views. Finally, we speak about strategies parents can use to implement social media for the first time in their children's lives.
