It's time for another in-depth author interview on Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick!  This time around, I speak with romance author Debra Parmley (also find her on Amazon, Facebook, and Twitter)! And by the way, just in case you're thinking, "nah, I'm not a Romance fan; this isn't for me," I urge you to press "play."  This is a conversation about writing fiction, reading fiction, being part of the creative community, and perhaps more than anything, we talk about how to effectively balance a prolific creative writing life with a healthy, productive, full "real" life. There's something here for you, dear listener. Dig in! This episode was recorded on June 15th, 2023. The conversation with Debra Parmley was recorded on January 28th, 2023. About Debra Parmley Author Debra Parmley believes "Every day we are alive is a beautiful day," and she likes to give her readers and her story people a story that ends happily. An Air Force veteran's wife, Debra is most known for writing military romantic suspense. She writes gritty western historical romance, 1920's romance, contemporary romance, holiday romance, fairytale romance, time travel romance, and poetry. In her freelance work she has done interviews and written travel pieces. As Debra Bishop, she writes fantasy, fairy tales for all ages and children's books. Debra is married to her high sweetheart, whom she asked out after a five-dollar bet. After living in five states with her husband and two sons, and living for 23 years just outside Memphis, TN, she, and her husband sold everything and moved into a 43-foot motorhome, a 2010 Tiffin Allegro diesel bus. Debra now lives in their motorhome full-time with her husband as they travel the U.S. You can see her travels on her Beautiful Day Traveler blog and her Beautiful Day YouTube channel. Award-winning author, Darcy Carson, is Jeny Heckman's guest on Jeny's Tattle Tale and the author on spotlight on Jeny's website, jenyheckman.com. Darcy is an award-winning author, who was a born reader. Having a mother who worked in a library helped. She didn’t know that there were fines attached to books she kept reading over and over for decades. Her first book was published in 2000, a romantic comedy, THE TROUBLE WITH MOTHER, with Hardshell Word Factory, which she won The Emerald City Keeper award. She penned five novellas with Amazon’s Kindle Worlds in the Doublesight, the first one winning Rivers of Ink first place. She has been nominated for numerous RWA chapter writing contests, winning and placing in several. She went on to self-publish a paranormal romance, MAGIC IN THE AIR, set in Seattle about the magic police. She is currently writing for The Wild Rose Press. Her first book, HE WALKS IN DREAMS, is a fantasy romance and the first in the Dragons Return series. The second book in the series, WOMAN IN THE WOODS, will be out shortly. Dragons come naturally to Darcy as she had a childhood friend named Pepper-Piper, who was a dragon. She also has an Irish historical romance coming out with The Wild Rose Press entitled, TO STEAL AN IRISH HEART. Prior to publishing, Darcy worked for a major airline manufacturer as an executive secretary. But don’t ask to identity an airplane. They all look the same to her. Darcy’s hobbies include jewelry making. Stringing beads is very relaxing, zen-like. No thought required. She loves reading, traveling, shopping, and going to the casino to give her money away. The book we are spotlighting for Darcy this week is She Wakes the Night. KW launched in May 2013 as a way for intellectual property owners to open their worlds for other writers, with both the copyright holder and the contributor splitting royalties from sales. It was a popular option for authors looking to break into writing fiction, with the power of a known brand behind them. There’s been no official word as to what happens next, and that’s proving problematic for contributing authors. Under the Kindle Worlds License Agreement, the contributing authors granted rights to their stories to the property holders. Effectively, then, it’s up to those property holders to make any deals to republish or redistribute that work. As there are few viable options for royalty splitting in the marketplace, the likelihood is that these titles will never be republished. — http://bit.ly/150-worldsRomantic Times Calling it Quits — Romantic Times Magazine, and its associated annual convention, will be shutting down, according to a May 16 announcement. The Romantic Times convention is currently running, but magazine owner Kathryn Falk announced to attendees that this would be the last year. Most attendees were very surprised, and were concerned that the closure would impact readers. Thanks to JoCarol Jones, however, there’s still some spark for readers and convention goers. Jones accounted that she will be creating and running The Booklovers Convention, which will take up the cause. — http://bit.ly/150-romanticMore Cocky — The story behind #cockygate just keeps evolving, now with a feature article in Vox detailing some of the finer points of the IP battle. For those not in the know, author Faleena Hopkins started an avalanche of news and ill feelings when she trademarked the word “cocky” as it applies to ebooks, books, and audiobooks in the romance genre. She started a ruckus when she sent cease and desist letters to a number of romance authors using the word in the titles of their books, following up by issuing takedown notices with Amazon for alleged trademark violation. The story continues to take on mass as authors take issue, file petitions to have the trademark revoked, and even turn to trade organizations like RWA to bring legal muscle to the game. The implications of this story keep unfolding. — http://bit.ly/150-cockyTHIS EPISODE OF THE WORDSLINGER PODCAST IS SPONSORED BY:Written World Writer’s Retreat - Rent a writer’s retreat that goes wherever you want to go. Hello and welcome to the summer edition of Punisher: Body Count. Please wear your shades at all times while listening. Introduction - Jake proves he’s not a 90s kid and I talk about all the cool celebrities I met at my local nerd convention. News - Just a tidbit about Charles Soule’s plans for the Punisher. Bullet Points - We cover Thunderbolts # 9, where the Marvel AR is delightful and editorial digs deep for villains. Flashbacks - Jake and I discussed the Punisher: Back to School Special #2. It’s got roid rage, a GWAR homage, and a hobo army. What more could you ask for! Discharge Papers - Jake and I get into a row about postmodernism in movies, and then we both discuss Star Trek: Into Darkness and Iron Man 3. We close out with Jake’s review of Hiroaki Samura’s latest manga anthology and my take on Amazon’s new Kindle Worlds program.
