Not long ago I was asked by some friends to help members of the Sikh faith in their effort to build a new temple in Urbandale, Iowa. While this may seem like a hyper-local story we found the topic to be quite interesting. My guest is Baljit Singh Verdi one of the leaders of the group. While they do have a temple (Gurudwara) in West Des Moines their congregation is growing and they envision the new facility to also become a community center which would benefit all of Urbandale. Meet my newest friend Baljit. Thanks for being here! The award winning Insight on Business the News Hour with Michael Libbie is the only weekday business news podcast in the Midwest. Welcome aboard as we embark on a daring expedition to unravel the enigma shrouding religious practices and the unsettling infiltration of scams. Brace yourselves for a rollercoaster ride through the corridors of faith, where we confront hard truths and challenge the status quo. We kick off with a bombshell: Can we truly make God happy? Or are we merely victims of a manipulation game played by religious institutions? Join us as we dare to question the very essence of spirituality, challenging conventional norms and shedding light on the murky depths of religious dogma. Hold onto your seats as we dissect the jaw-dropping expenditure of a staggering 4 billion dollars (3000 Crore Rupees) on the Ayodhya Mandir. Is this colossal spending a genuine expression of faith, or a cunning ploy to capitalize on believers' devotion? Let's peel back the layers of deception and uncover the true motivations behind these grandiose constructions. But wait, there's more! Prepare to have your beliefs shaken to the core as we explore the unsettling possibility of scripture manipulation. Are the holy texts we hold dear tainted by the hands of greedy priests seeking to line their pockets? We challenge the authenticity of revered scriptures and expose the sinister agendas lurking behind the veil of piety. And let's not forget the elephant in the room: the glaring hypocrisy of modern-day religious leaders. While prophets preached humility and sacrifice, today's spiritual gurus flaunt their wealth and power with unabashed arrogance. Join us as we unmask the wolves in sheep's clothing, calling out corruption where we see it and demanding accountability from those who claim moral authority. Buckle up, folks! This is not your average Sunday sermon. Prepare for a no-holds-barred exploration of faith, finance, and the dark underbelly of religious institutions. Don't miss out on this eye-opening journey that's guaranteed to spark debate, challenge perceptions, and leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about religion. #ayodhya #temple #sikh #gurudwara #punjabi #podcast

Welcome to Embers and Wind!In sharing the meditation guest Tal Singh practices and teaches, he reveals his faith in both Sikhism and Christianity: “The meditation technique that they teach is called saas giraas which places the emphasis on the breath, the breathwork. What the gurus taught us, what Guru Nanak taught us, was that we should meditate with every breath. We should be meditating and so that's the kind of principle behind it. So, the way I teach is actually quite secular approach. So, it's a spiritual approach rather than being specific to one religion. And actually, believe it or not, I actually follow two religions. I also follow Christianity. I go to the church every Sunday. I am actually baptized as a Christian also by the Church of England, here in the U.K. But I also every Sunday in the morning I go to church and then after church I go to the Sikh Temple or the Gurudwara or the Gurdwara.”I'm your host, Keith Weedman. In each podcast episode, you will hear stories. These stories will feel like a tender wind blowing on the embers of service that glow within you. In this weekly show, you will learn ideas, kindling for your embers. The recent attack on the last Gurudwara in Afghanistan found Khalistanis tight-lipped on Jihad. Instead they blamed Hindus, believe it or not. This is consistent behaviour of Khalistanis in all past attacks on them by Jihad in AfPak. Puneet Singh Sahani joins Sanjay Dixit and Vibhuti Jha to discuss.
The silence of the Khalistanis is baffling regarding the recent attack by Taliban against Sikhs in Afghanistan. Why this hypocrisy? Don't Sikh lives matter elsewhere?

The Gurugram Namaz saga is getting into another interesting territory. Some Gurudwaras in Gurugram aka Gurgaon have offered space to Muslims to offer Namaz in their premises. Several questions arise - will the Sikhs ask for reciprocation? will they cover the images of the Gurus in the Gurudwara? Will they stop the hymns while Namaz is played out? Sardar Ravi Ranjan Singh joins Sanjay Dixit to discuss the raging issue. Also present is the Chairman of the Joint Hindu Sangharsh Samiti, Mahavir Bharadwaj

You can also check out our other episodes on Sikkim by Surya Raju and by Sandy and Vyjay- Utsav and his partner head off from Gangtok towards their itinerary of Lachen, Chopta valley and Gurdongmar lake.- It is highly advised that you hire a driver to drive you around as driving in the state is quite challenging given the weather conditions and the roads.- Utsav spends his time in Lachen, enjoying the shoulder season with no tourists, interacting with locals as well as exploring the local monasteries.- Make a quick trip to Chopta valley from Lachen - the valley gives a beautiful view of the snowcapped mountains and the river (depending on the time of the year).- Utsav's trip to Gurdongmar was cut short due to the weather, since the army recommended to avoid travelling during severe weather conditions.- On the way back, Utsav makes a stop at a Gurudwara to enjoy some good conversations and a hearty langar (meal in the community kitchen).- Utsav also learns about the legend of Gurudongmar, about how Guru Nanak is believed to have traveled here and how a portion of the river never freezes at the point where the Guru hit his staff ('Dong' in Punjabi, 'Maar' is hit). There is also a legend about the Buddhist saint Padmasambhava with a similar story, hence the lake is considered sacred by both Sikhs and Buddhists. (Erroneously mentioned as "Sikhs and Hindus" on the podcast)- After spending a day at Lachen, Utsav decides to move base to a small village called Dzongu and spend some time absorbing the slow life of the village.- Slow travelling gives one the opportunity to live like a local and enjoy some authentic experiences, without having to rush from point to point.- This includes enjoying some wholesome organic food (Sikkim is the first officially organic state in India), local beers and Sikkimese hospitality in general.- Utsav also shares some interesting tidbits about the colourful prayer flags in Sikkim and their significance.- Try to hire a local tour guide driver, as they have the best network in the area (which is often useful) and also helps boost the local economy. Period poverty is all around us, even in developed countries where resources are much more readily available. Period shame is also omnipresent - but we just don't talk about it enough. How did Manjit convince a priest in a Gurudwara to allow women who are menstruating to enter during prayers? How has Manjit tackled this taboo to help create a generational change in this conversation? Tune in to find out! There is also a muslim shrine in the vicinity. - One of the highpoint of the visit, besides the opportunity to pay homage to Guru Nanak is the chance to interact with Pakistani locals who travel here to interact with folks from across the border. - The ambience is that of peace, calmness and friendship and very different from the Wagah border where patriotism and aggression is more evident. - A great opportunity for not just followers of sikhism but others as well to visit a historical and religiously significant place across the border when the option is available! The trip inspired Susan to write the book (the only previous book written about this was in the early 1900s by British mountaineer Frank Smythe who discovered this place)- The Valley is very close to Badrinath and the religious circuit of Chota Chardhaam. - Given that the valley is situated at a high altitude (14400 ft), it is imperative that one acclimatizes sufficiently. Hence traveling slowly and stopping over at other interesting places like Auli is a great option. - Gobind Ghat is the road head for the trek. One needs to trek from here to the base village Gangharia. - The Valley of Flowers national park is open only between 7-5PM, so it is advised to head to Gangharia the previous day and rest before heading to the VoF. - It is roughly a 10km trek from Gangharia to the VoF, so you will need to make the trip to the VoF and back the same day as staying there is not allowed. - One can either trek or avail the services of porters or a mule. The porters can carry you in bags called pittoos. - Options for food and lodging are plentiful in Ghangharia and around although the nicer places will need you to book accommodation in advance. - The Ecocenter in Gangharia has a documentary screening every few hours that gives you information about the flora of the place. There are options to hire local guides from the centre who are very competent and knowledgeable. - Some of the flowers one can find are orchids, poppies, primulas, marigold, daisies, rhododendrons, Himalayan rose, Blue poppy, cobra lily amongst others. Best time is to visit after the monsoons since the flowers are in full bloom. - The Pushpavati river and some smaller streams criss cross as you walk from Gangharia to the VoF where you have to register yourself and pay the fee which is good for 3 days. - Milestones within the park include a big rock (baman pair), a glacier point and the grave of a botanist, Joanne Leigh. One can also trek to Badrinath all the way from the VoF with the help of a guide. - Hemkund Sahib is a separate trek which also starts from Gangharia and leads tot he very sacred Gurudwara Hemkund Sahib. Hemkund Sahib is at a height of over 15,000 ft. So precautions for AMS are necessary. - There is a langar service as well as accommodation for traveler in the Gurudwara. Other options around the area are Auli, Badrinath and the Chota CHardham locations. Sukhbir Singh is a well-known Bollywood singer. He is also called the prince of Bhangra. He has recently become an active startup investor. His first investment is in the beverage market in India. In this podcast, Sukhbir shares his journey of how living hand to mouth in Kenya, in a Gurudwara taught him humbleness and never letting your success or work change your human principles. His parents migrated when he was just two years old from Jalandhar, India. His father was into singing, classically trained, but he was spiritually inclined. So he worked as a Gyaniji in Gurudwara in Kenya. He learned different instruments by being in a band in Kenya, started off as a keyboard player, then progressed to a drummer, guitarist, and then eventually a singer, started from backing vocals and then lead vocal. More on his journey in the podcast. When being asked on: 1. How do you feel when you meet young founders today? I see myself in them. I see when I was their age and I had that desire and passion to create a song, would take an idea from just a melody to a song. And, for Startups I see them in a very similar fashion it starts with an idea and then the passion behind the ideas of people actually take that idea and make it into a reality. 2. How music production and startups are related? It's the same thing with startups you don't know if that is going to work. It's unless and until you put it into practices. Similarly, with music production, you take an idea to make it into song and then let you know the masses decide whether it's a hit song or not. Sukhbir also shares: 1. What he is looking in startups and founders that he wants to fund 2. His advice to founders to deliver excellence in business 3. His learnings from 25 years in the music industry that can be applied to startups 4. His advice from his own experience on dealing with failure in startups From Siddhartha: A shoutout to India’s first start-up to create shoes with Natural and Sustainable Fibres. Our life in today’s world is full of contradictions. On one hand the humanity is coming closer , people are interacting more, they know more about each other but on the other hand there are incidents of hatred and violence. Be it recent shooting at a Gurudwara in Wisconsin or killing of US ambassador Christopher Stevens, it makes you step back and think and try to find answers which are not easy. The problems due to religion, caste, inequality are not new and there have been great people who have tried to understand this from different viewpoints. In today’s Chai Time we explore the theme of tolerance and love through music of recent times as well as music which is motivated by writings of Kabir, Meera bai, Rumi, Narsi Mehta and others.
