The UK Supreme Court has made a landmark ruling this morning, backing the biological definition of women in the UK's Equality Act.This means that the term “woman” in the legal aspect will not include transgender women - which might have a wider implication on policy decisions down the road.Joining Kieran to react to this ruling is Laoise de Brún BL, CEO and Founder of The Countess and Karen Sugrue, Co-Chair for Mammies for Trans Rights and Psychotherapist and Sociology Lecturer in TUS Limerick.

jQuery(document).ready(function(){ cab.clickify(); }); Original Podcast with clickable words https://tinyurl.com/2xq98oq7 Contact: irishlingos@gmail.com Five prisoners still in hospital in Portlaoise. Cúigear príosúnach fós san ospidéal i bPort Laoise. Prison officers in the country's prisons are more alert than usual since at least eleven prisoners fell very ill in Portlaoise Prison yesterday afternoon after taking an overdose of some drug. Tá oifigigh phríosúin i bpríosúin na tíre airdealleach thar mar is gnách ó buaileadh an-tinn aon phríosúnach déag ar a laghad i bPríosún Phort Laoise tráthnóna inné tar éis dóibh ródháileog de dhruga éigin a thógáil. As soon as the attention of prison officials was drawn to the emergency, ten prisoners were taken to the local hospital on bail. A luaithe a tarraingíodh aird na n-oifigeach príosúin ar an éigeandáil, tugadh deichniúr príosúnach chun an ospidéil áitiúil faoi théirim. Afterwards, however, more prisoners fell ill and at least one of them was also taken to hospital. Ina dhiaidh sin, áfach, buaileadh tinn tuilleadh príosúnach agus tugadh duine acu ar a laghad chun an ospidéil chomh maith. Three of the eleven are said to be seriously ill and in intensive care. Deirtear go bhfuil triúr den aon duine dhéag an-dona tinn agus faoi dhianchúram. Six recovered and have since been returned to prison. Tháinig biseach ar sheisear agus tá siad tugtha ar ais chun an phríosúin ó shin. The other two are said to be in a stable condition in hospital. Deirtear go bhfuil bail sheasmhach san ospidéal ar an mbeirt eile. Three weeks ago, the Irish Prison Service warned prisoners about the drug nits and the dangers associated with it. Trí seachtaine ó shin, thug Seirbhís Phríosúin na hÉireann foláireamh do phríosúnaigh faoin druga níotáisín agus faoin gcontúirt a bhaineann leis. Nitasine is an opiate drug that slows the heart rate and breathing rate. Druga ópóideach is ea níotáisín a mhoillíonn an ráta croí agus an ráta análaithe. The Prison Service says they are working in conjunction with the Health Service Executive and have obtained an extra supply of the medication naloxone in case it is needed. Deir an tSeirbhís Phríosúin go bhfuil siad ag obair i gcomhar le Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte agus go bhfuil soláthar breise den chógas leighis nalocsón faighte acu ar fhaitíos go mbeadh sé ag teastáil. Naloxone can instantly reverse the damage caused by nitrite and other drugs and save people from death. Is féidir le nalocsón an díobháil a dhéanann níotáisín agus drugaí eile a chealú ar an bpointe agus daoine a thógáil ón mbás. The Irish Trust for the Reform of the Criminal System is a prisoners' rights organization and they believe that the overcrowding of people in the country's prisons is contributing to the drug problem in them. Eagraíocht cearta príosúnach is ea Iontaobhas na hÉireann um Athchóiriú an Chórais Choiriúil agus dar leo go bhfuil an plódú daoine i bpríosúin na tíre ag cur le fadhb na ndrugaí iontu. Speaking on RTÉ today, the executive director of the organization Saoirse Brady said that there were 5,017 people in various prisons in the State yesterday and that is 12% more than the number of people that have room for them. Ag labhairt di ar RTÉ inniu, dúirt stiúrthóir feidhmiúcháin na heagraíochta Saoirse Brady go raibh 5,017 duine i bpríosúin éagsúla sa Stát inné agus gurb in 12 faoin gcéad níos mó ná an líon daoine a bhfuil áit iontu dóibh. Saoirse Brady also pointed out that many of the people who are put in prison are drug addicts but they often do not get the support they need while in detention. Thug Saoirse Brady le fios freisin gur andúiligh drugaí go leor de na daoine a chuirtear i bpríosúin ach gur minic nach bhfaigheann siad an tacaíocht atá de dhíth orthu agus iad faoi choinneáil. In this episode of Reel Stories, we checked in with Laoise Toye. Laoise works in television and media and is the host of her own podcast 'Laoise Online'. In this episode we discuss: Laoise's journey into television, from working with a Belfast production company called Stellify to where she is now, her love of theatre and musical theatre and how watching Eurovision for the first time as a child inspired her to want to work in the glamorous world of entertainment. For industry issues, we discuss work-life balance, accentism she's faced as an Irish woman living in London, her passion about the Irish language and wanting to keep it visible on television screens. For Laoise's mental health, Laoise had experience of bullying growing up and we briefly discuss this and the impact it had on her then, and as an adult. We also discuss her diagnosis of Endometriosis, which she has lived with as a 14/15-year-old. We talk about the crippling chronic pain it has caused her, which at times has caused exhaustion, fainting and even hospitalisation on a couple of occasions. We also discuss how it impacts her relationships, career and future fertility concerns. Laoise Casey's career story is a testament to the power of following one's gut and being persistent. Starting as an HR manager, she was spurred by her father's illness to reconsider her life's direction. After a year of reflection and budgeting, she enrolled at the Leiths School of Food and Wine in London to formalise her passion for cooking. Despite initial fears and uncertainty, she found immense joy and fulfilment in the culinary world.Laoise's journey wasn't easy. She faced difficulties getting journalists to take her seriously, but her determination paid off when she landed a weekly recipe column with the Evening Standard. Her transition involved working part-time in gastropubs and honing her skills under influential chefs like Robin Gill. Laoise's love for the restaurant environment and rapid adaptation to its high-pressure demands are genuinely inspiring.Laoise's story is a powerful example of this principle in action, emphasising the importance of not overthinking and just seeking new opportunities. We also discuss the crisis of talent in the food industry and the importance of recognising and utilising transferable skills from non-food backgrounds. Laoise's work with Plate Up, a recipe food app, speaks to her passion for making food accessible and enjoyable for everyone.Throughout the episode, we offer practical advice for those looking to make a career change, stressing the value of listening, learning, and seeking help from others. We encourage you to embrace your passions and not shy away from the hard work that comes with any significant transition.Timestamps00:01: Introduction05:15: Laoise recounts her early career in HR and the personal crisis that changed her path12:45: Pursuing formal culinary training at Leiths School of Food and Wine18:20: Working part-time in restaurants and adapting to the kitchen environment23:00: Securing a column at the Evening Standard and the importance of persistence35:10: Discussing the crisis of talent in the food industry and recognising transferable skills40:00: Practical advice for making a career changeLinks and Resources:Website Link: https://ohforfoodssake.co.uk/FB Link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ohforfoodsakeLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/oh-for-food-s-sake/You can follow us here on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oh_forfoodssake/For industry consulting from Lucy, connect with her on Instagram or LinkedIn.Find her on Instagram or LinkedIn for further support with industry coaching and facilitation from Amy.See you next time!

Richie is joined by Laoise de Brún and Matt Le Tissier.Laoise de Brún is a barrister at law and the founding member of the Irish campaign group The Countess. The Countess is a group of men and women whose mission is to promote and protect the best interests of the women and children of Ireland. On today's show, Laoise discusses the draconian hate speech legislation making its way through the Irish Senate, how it will criminalise those with gender critical views and impede the rights of biological women to keep men out of spaces reserved exclusively for women. https://thecountess.ie/https://twitter.com/TheCountessIEhttps://www.youtube.com/@TheCountessConversationsMatt Le Tissier is a Premier League legend. In a glittering seventeen-year career, Matt did it all. He represented his country and became the first midfielder to score 100 goals in the Premier League. He was also a much loved panellist on SKY's Soccer Saturday until 2020 when he left the show after speaking his mind on Covid lockdowns. Matt also took issue with the panellists being required to wear Black Lives Matters pins. In a wide-ranging conversation Matt tells Richie how he feels about the past three years, why he spoke up about vaccine injuries, how it has impacted on him and his family and why he believes that in the end, good will triumph over evil. The conversation around the environment, climate change, and global warming is one that extends itself to our clothing choices. Fast-fashion garments are often made from synthetic materials like polyester and nylon derived from fossil fuels, which are not biodegradable and can release harmful chemicals into the environment when manufactured, leading to a massive increase in textile waste. This impact is being combatted by the rise of slow fashion designers and more sustainable fashion choices. Tipp FM's Jody Coffey recently spoke with Laoise Carey, a Nenagh-based slow fashion designer. Laoise's garments are not only a friend to the environment in her process but also inspired by the environment in her designs, often taking inspiration from landscapes across Tipperary.

When Noreen from Galway got in touch with Dermot and Dave, she'd had a pretty dramatic weekend. After bringing 12 year old Ruairc and sister Laoise to Dublin for the day to see the Toy Show Musical, they found out moments in advance that the show had been cancelled. To make up for the upset, they went to the Lego Store where they got some goodies. Which then ended up being left at the side of the car in the Heuston Station carpark, and then, poor Ruairc ended up in hospital! A fairly glum Noreen joined Dermot and Dave to ask for help, and needless to say...there might be a Christmas miracle!

Great to meet up with my cuz Cora Ryan this morning. Cora just arrived back from Australia with her new baby, Laoise. Little Laoise had her very first birthday this week. Cora recalls growing up on Main Street, all the families about the place, Fahy's, Magee's, Wade's, Dervan's. Rollerskating on the Main St! Drifting off to sleep with the music from Keary's and all the other Main St pubs filling the night air. Right in the middle of it. The popular haunts about the town, The Temperance Hall, the Lake, Cinema, the arcade at the back of the Casket, the tennis club. Summers that ran for ever. Leaving for Australia in 2007 and making a life on the other side of world. Welcome home Cora.

This is the second episode of Housing Shock - the regular side-series of Reboot Republic that discusses the big housing issues. This week Rory discusses the latest housing in the media with Laoise Neylon, reporter with the Dublin Inquirer. They discuss housing affordability, mortgage debt and the shared equity scheme, the lobbying by investor funds for a leasing scheme in affordable housing, asking who gains from this, and the unsustainability of the current build to rent investor lead housing market. Laoise talks about her investigation of the impact of the privatisation of homeless accommodation provision, the lack of oversight and standards, how the state is failing in its duty to vulnerable homeless people in this outsourcing of social care. They also discuss rising rents and how HAP recipients are being pushed deeper into poverty because they have to pay top ups to landlords, yet are taken off housing waiting lists. HAP is not social housing and is resulting in child poverty. Thank you for listening, and please recommend us. We need your help as well. Visit patreon.com/tortoiseshack
