IntroductionThe moment has finally arrived. After weeks of tension, Esther and Mordecai find themselves trapped in a kingdom where royal decrees cannot be overturned. A decree looms over their heads: the jews are to be annihilated. The clock is ticking, and the 11-month timeframe continues to get closer. Esther is dragging her feet by engaging in two banquets. Is this another Marie Antoinette who has an attitude, let them eat cake? What is more, when she lists her requests, she speaks first of her inconvenience. What about the horror of ethnic cleansing? What about the horror of people trying to destroy God's plan by slaughtering his promised people? Esther's AnswerEsther has not been characterized as very wise. In fact, she has just been led around and told what to do. She does not seem self-willed or competent. We learn that Esther is very savvy. Rather than making her request at the first banquet, she waits, which tests the king's sincerity. When the moment comes, she begins with a personal appeal: let my life be spared, and the life of my people. We might think that she is selfish. Rather, she is starting with one that the king loves. Then, with one bold declaration, she identifies herself publicly as a Jew, aligning herself with God's covenant people at great personal risk. Her restraint, her timing, and her courage together expose Haman for exactly what he is: the enemy of God's people. She is the queen of her people. Haman's FallFrom the moment the king leaves the room in anger, Haman's fate is sealed. The man who boldly celebrated the annihilation of an entire people is now on his knees, begging for his life from a woman. The irony runs deep. This is a kingdom that ruled that no woman would have authority over a man. Now determines what happens to Haman's fate. Saul caved, and Samuel finished the job. This man repeats the story only to find that history repeats itself. Haman does not cry out, but only begs for mercy. He wants to live again to tyrannize some more. He is not asking God for mercy, but begging the queen to extend his selfishly ambitious life. It is in his personal ambition he loses his life. The king walks in and sees him on the couch with Esther. His persistent clinging and begging for his life is what brings him down. The king is furious, and Haman leaves the scene. The king will not tolerate anyone attempting to assault the queen. Esther remains silent, allowing the king to make his hasty judgment. Tragically, the words ring true. You will fall (certainly fall in English), and he had fallen before Esther. Haman ExaltedIn a final twist of dark irony, Haman is "exalted.” He wanted to be exalted, and he got his wish. He is impaled on the pole that he built for Mordecai. Satan tried to triumph over God in Eden, but his fate was, is, and will be publicly declared. Haman is the reminder: God's purpose stands. The towering structure, visible across the entire city of Susa, was meant to display Mordecai's shame. Instead, it displays Haman's. The deeper meaning is that anyone who is hung on a tree is a covenant breaker. (Dt. 21:21, Gaol 3:13). The Lord's decree that Amalek would not stand is fulfilled, and the king's wrath is appeased the moment it is done. Haman, who schemed to destroy God's gospel community, ends on a tree he never intended for himself. And in that picture, we see the shadow of Christ. One is hung on a tree, and the king's wrath subsides. Christ did this not as a sinner, but as our Redeemer-Lord. Haman symbolizes the other side of this. The serpent seed will not rise and be victorious. ConclusionThe book of Esther is a story about the "B team,” which is flawed, unlikely, and outmatched by smarter, more powerful people. However, God's humor shines through in his sovereign purpose for his people. God does not take the easy way out, but God preserves his people so that they have life in the Lord. Esther could have stayed silent and saved herself. Mordecai could have bowed. Instead, God worked through their faithfulness to protect his people and establish his purpose. We must not grow too self-righteous. In fact, this story reminds us that Haman deserved what he received. We must remember that all of us are hamans. We all deserve to be hung upon a tree. The mercy of the gospel is that Christ went to that tree in our place, so that we don't have to. If God could protect his people through the B team in Persia, how much more can he do so in Christ? That is our hope, our confidence, and our motivation as we press forward in this age. Let us cling to our redeemer. Let us live for him. Let us live in him.

There are some places in the world that seem to be built for ghosts. Heavy walls, dark corridors, shadows that linger even when the lights are switched on. They seem to soak up misery and dread, and long after the people are gone, the walls still whisper. Melbourne has one of those places, right in the centre of the city. The Old Melbourne Gaol. Today, it's a museum. Tourists wander through its three-storey cell block, peer into the tiny cells, and read about bushrangers, poisoners, and men wrongly hanged. But back in the 1800s and early 1900s, this place was a factory of punishment and death. And if ghosts really do linger where life was most cruel and unjust, then the Old Melbourne Gaol has more reason than most to be haunted. The development was earmarked for a retail outlet on the 1.68 hectare Malt House site on the Gaol Road. It would result in between 90 and 110 jobs being created.  2010 - A decision to grant planning permission for a new 35 million euro critical care unit at the Mid-West Regional Hospital campus in Limerick meant the closure of a smaller unit at Nenagh Hospital. There were five coronary and intensive care beds in Nenagh, all of which would be moved to Limerick as part of HSE reconfiguration plans.  That was Craig David with 7 Days – the biggest song on this day in 2000 Onto music news on this day In 1996 Oasis played two sold out nights at Balloch Castle Country Park, Loch Lomand, Scotland to over 80,000 fans 2001 The News Of The World reported that Mariah Carey had hired a private eye to spy on her ex husband, record boss Tommy Mottola. And finally celebrity birthdays on this day – Barack Obama was born in America in 1961 and actors Dylan and Cole Sprouse were born in Italy on this day in 1992 and this is some of the stuff they have done. Canterbury city centre has been closed off after a fire broke out at an abandoned former department store. Firefighters have been working through the night at the site of the old Debenhams – one person has been treated for smoke inhalation. Also in today's podcast, you can hear from a man who was fined for driving on a street where traffic is banned during term time even though the school was on holiday.He says he drove down the road in Chatham when the school was on half-term break and was shocked when he received the fine in the post. Two secondary schools could be closed by the government and reopened under new bosses after damning Ofsted inspections pushed them both into special measures.The sites were rated inadequate and have now been issued “termination warning notices”.Plans to turn an abandoned nightclub into flats have been scrapped as developers claim the housing market “isn't particularly strong”.Bosses in Ashford had given the green light for the transformation of the old Liquid site into housing, but it's been confirmed that's no longer happening. And a work is well underway to transform a former Kent gaol into a bustling cafe. It's all part of the £10.5 million renovation of Dover's Maison Dieu – you can hear from one of the coordinators about what it will all look like when it's finished.

Pentridge Prison in Victoria was home to some of the worst criminals for more than a century.

Today we're in the oldest recorded town in England, Colchester! It's here, in 1076 that William the Conqueror plundered the local Roman architecture to build the first and largest of his great keeps, Colchester Castle. We're here to learn about the castle's history as a county gaol, it's affiliation with witch hunting, and the origins of fake news... This place was designed to house only 29 prisoners at a time, from poor debtors to execution victims. Between 1730 – 1832 in excess of 222 crimes carried the death penalty - 56 prisoners met their end at Derby Gaol where their hangings were spectacles witnessed by crowds of people waiting in eager anticipation. Terror, torture and death, you could be murdered for the coat off your back! This prison sits under a normal housing estate. The only Victorian era prison still standing in the city of Belfast in Northern Ireland, was once known as Europe's Alcatraz. Dating from 1845, this was a place of incarceration and execution. This is the 2nd part of my interview with Lt Col. Stephen Harrison, MBE who served for two years as a full-time Touring Officer with BRIXMIS. The tours were hazardous three-man, vehicle-borne patrols collecting intelligence on the Warsaw Pact forces in East Germany for up to five days and nights over a series of four-month patrolling periods. In this episode, we hear of Stephen's imprisonment in a Soviet Army gaol, following detention in a Soviet Army garrison town as well as East German and Soviet Army press coverage about his activities. Stephen's speciality was using his language skills to engage and befriend opposition troops and thereby gaining valuable intelligence. He used to go into bars frequented by Soviet officers and recalls one particular drunken night in Potsdam..  We also hear about his visit to the infamous World War 2 prison camp of Colditz castle where he befriends the staff enabling other BRIXMIS tours to visit regularly.Stephen also shares details of the top-secret Operation Tomahawk, a particularly unpleasant mission which may not be for those of a sensitive disposition.In later years Stephen obtained his Stasi file which reveals that the surveillance on him was far closer than he'd ever believed.Don't miss part 1  of this fascinating interview here.Cold War history is disappearing; however, a simple monthly donation will keep this podcast on the air. Derby has a reputation for being a hotbed of ghostly goings on. Stories of ghostly activities span generations. In fact it’'s difficult to turn a corner in the city without hearing a nerve jangling tale of things that go bump in the night. And you don’t have to go too far to find one such tale. The old gaol in Friar Gate has a particularly gruesome past. Today, all that survives of the original gaol are its cells, which now form part of a working museum which tells the story of its grisly history. Opened in 1756 it replaced one in the Cornmarket and materials from that building were actually used in the construction of the Friar Gate Gaol, which was deliberately sited close to Nun's Green, a place where executions had traditionally taken place. Many a brutal execution took place in the prison, and many others died by other means such as illness and suicide. Wicklow's historic gaol stands in the centre of the township and today it is one of its major visitor attractions. But its history is filled with the angry men of Irish rebellions and the starving faces of the local people.You could be put behind bars for life for stealing a sheep and more people were transported from the area of Wicklow than anywhere else in Ireland.Most of them ended up in Australia. Wicklow Gaol has many ghosts that are seemingly serving an ‘afterlife sentence' as they have no intention of leaving any time soon and encountering one of them can be a terrifying experience. 100 years ago today, on the 27th of July 1922, Frank Aiken (the future Tánaiste of Ireland) orchestrated the biggest jailbreak in Irish history when his battalion blew a hole in the side of the Dundalk Gaol.
