Choosing the Struggle by Martina AndersonLast Saturday a packed St. Mary's gave a huge welcome to Martina Anderson who was launching her personal and hugely important autobiography – Choosing the Struggle. This is an honest and heartfelt account of Martina growing up in Derry, her experience of poverty, witnessing the excesses of the British Army and RUC and the injustice of the northern state, and deciding to take a stand against these by joining the Irish Republican Army.It is wonderfully well written with her description of her arrest and imprisonment in England, and of the conditions ion which she and her friend and comrade Ella O'Dwyer were held, a reminder of the terrible conditions that Irish POWs endured.Martina's account of her decision to seek a termination of a pregnancy and of the years of brutal strip searches are deeply personal and moving. Her experiences with Ella in Durham prison are especially shocking.Martina sees herself as an activist – in whatever area of struggle she is engaged. She is an Irish Republican who believes that the future of the island of Ireland lies in securing our right to self-determination and Unity.As an MEP she played a leadership role in the campaign to defend the Good Friday Agreement, and force the then Irish government of Enda Kenny to challenge the British government following the disastrous Brexit referendum vote. And she led the diplomatic offensive to secure a special drsignated status for the North.As her friend Eibhlín Glenholmes writes in the Foreword: “This book is also threaded in her love stories. I knew Mary well. She was originally from Mayo and met Pat in the early 1960s in the Gorbals in Glasgow. They married in 1967 and would have celebrated 59 years together next week.As Uachtarán Shinn Féin Mary Lou McDonald said in her oration Mary was “unique, brave, irreplaceable. She was fierce. She stood her ground. Stood by her beliefs. By her friends. And she loved her family ferociously.”Mary and Pat arrived back in Ireland as the Civil Rights campaign grew into mass street protests across the North and just a year before British soldiers were sent onto those same streets. Together they took a stand against the prejudice, discrimination and oppression they witnessed in the North. Thus began a lifetime of activism in the Republican struggle.Pat contested his first general election in 1989 and then three European elections for Sinn Féin. He became an MLA in 1998. In 2001 Pat became Sinn Féin MP for West Tyrone. Mary was at the heart of each of those campaigns.  I want to extend my deep condolences to Mary's children; Maria, Rosaleen, Kathleen Anne, Danny and Michael. And to her grandchildren; Aoife, Ultán, Daithí, Ruairí, Aoise, Dearbhla, Laoise, Pádraig, Óonagh, Daniel, Mikey and little Gracie.

Momentum around Unity GrowsI want to begin by commending the SDLP for organising last week's conference – The Future of these Islands: Preparing for Change. It was a well-attended day-long event, held in Belfast, on the issue of Irish Unity. Among those who contributed to the series of discussions was Dublin Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan, former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Sinn Féin's Conor Murphy and others, including leading figures in the SDLP like the party leader Claire Hanna.Add this to Fine Gael's announcement that it is planning to publish a blueprint on Irish Unity at its Ard Fheis in November and next Tuesday's Dáil debate on Sinn Féin's legislative proposal - “Planning for Constitutional Change Bill 2026” – and it is clear that there is increasing unanimity in the Unity movement that planning for unity is now a priority.These are significant developments. Sinn Féin has long argued that the cause of Unity is bigger than any one party. The Moore St. Preservation Trust (MSPT), the Relatives of the 1916 Rising Relatives and others groups and individuals have been involved in a long running campaign to save this iconic site.Early next year the Moore St. Preservation Trust will be in court to judicially review the Hammerson Plan. This is a vital step to preserve this historic area and the Trust is engaged in a campaign to inform, lobby, and win support for its efforts. The Education Review Office has said schools need to get tougher on enforcing phone bans. Research found that only 50% of students are following the rules, a number it says is not good enough. Mount Albert Grammar Headmaster Patrick Drumm told Mike Hosking that the study needs to be unpacked further, as it's likely that students are using their phones outside of lessons instead of in a learning environment. When hiring for crew, it's common for crew members to expect to stay in their lanes — and that's completely understandable particularly in the context of union filmmaking. But on a micro-budget production, the mindset of “that's not really my job” can be radioactive. Your crew needs to be down for the chaos you're about to unleash.But of course, be fair and be reasonable; pay what you can — either in cash or points — but take the time to find a crew that's truly in it with you and willing to wear multiple hats. But here's the caveat, as the filmmaker, you must always be the hardest-working person on set.Find your audience where they already are.The Dream Eater team built buzz through festivals and the online horror community, most notably TikTok's HorrorTok — a vibrant ecosystem of horror influencers and fans. Thanks to a few key TikTok creators, buzz about the film went viral, which got the attention of Eli Roth.When promoting a film, it's essential to know, understand, and ideally befriend the horror community. Send us a textIn this episode, we're doing something a little different.  First, we will replay the episode featuring the Missing 411 case of 82 year old hunter Tom Messick who went missing in November 2015.  Strangely, just 9 days after Tom went missing, 68 year old Fred Drumm also went missing from his 170 acre farm just 40 miles away. Prior to realizing Tom was gone, his friend hears a strange metallic noise in the woods.  Jamie uncovered some other accounts of similar noises.  What the heck happened to these men?  Then at the end, Jamie shares some additional information she was given regarding the Tom Messick case.  The information comes from people in another hunting party who were there in the same area at the same time.
