The first 11 players –seven men and four women– to be inducted into New Zealand Cricket's hall of fame have been announced. The rules require inductees to have played for New Zealand and to have been retired for at least five years, with criteria weighted in favour of performance, leadership and influence. Emily Drumm, Debbie Hockley, and Brendon McCullum are among the first inductees, and Piney caught up with each of them after the ceremony to discuss the honour. “To be part of this, you know, inaugural first 11 .... it's a very, very special thing, the likes of probably which I haven't experienced before,” Hockley told him. “It's a New Zealand cricket family, and I've been privileged to be involved in many things, post cricket, but this is really special,” Drumm said. “It's incredibly humbling, you know, like I grew up wanting to play cricket for my country and I would have played one test to have played as long as I did and to have any impact whatsoever was, was pretty amazing, and I feel pretty grateful for it,” McCullum said. This episode features host Dr. Drumm McNaughton and guest Dr. Caitlin Runne-Janczy, Chief Academic Officer for Scientific Interactive, a company that provides hands-on and virtual science lab experiments to students. Drumm and Cait focus on the growing demand for online science lab courses, particularly in STEM fields. Cait discusses the results of a recent survey that found a significant increase in online lab enrollment and a corresponding decrease in on-campus enrollment. They also explore the challenges and opportunities of delivering quality online lab experiences, including safety considerations, lab setup, accreditation, and student learning outcomes. Cait highlights the importance of hands-on components in online labs and the potential for these courses to spark a passion for STEM beyond the individual student. Podcast Overview Some of the key insights and opportunities for higher education leaders who listen to this podcast: There is a growing demand for online science lab courses. Deans and department chairs report a greater than 70% increase in online lab enrollments and a corresponding 56% decrease in on-campus lab enrollments. 88% of students surveyed said it was important for them to have the opportunity to take an online science lab course, and 60% of those students would have enrolled elsewhere or not enrolled at all if an online lab option had not been available. Online science lab courses can be just as effective as on-campus courses if they include a hands-on component. Simulations have a place in the lab experience, but it must have some sort of hands-on element to really get students a comparable outcome to the campus counterpart. In the survey, 90% of faculty reported that students who take hands-on labs online have the knowledge and skills to continue in their degree progression. Online science lab courses can help institutions reach a broader range of students, including those who cannot attend on-campus classes due to work, family, or other obligations. This can help institutions grow their enrollment and retain more students. Online options also have a broader impact beyond just the individual student. For example, students who do lab kits at home with their families are expanding that love of science beyond just the individual student. Institutions need to be prepared to address the challenges of offering online science lab courses, such as ensuring student safety, providing adequate support to students, and meeting accreditation requirements. Safety is a key consideration for both students and institutions. Companies that provide lab kits typically cover liability insurance for the institution in case anything happens. Institutions need to provide adequate support to students who are taking online science lab courses, such as synchronous sessions, digital office hours, and digital lab partners. Accreditation bodies typically require online science lab courses to include a hands-on component to ensure that students have the transferable skills they need to continue in their degree program. Institutions should consider using online science lab courses as a way to improve student preparedness for on-campus lab courses. Students can do digital experiments before they get to campus so they can be familiar with the techniques and safety protocols that they will need to implement once they get to the lab. Institutions should partner with companies that have experience in developing and delivering online science lab courses. These companies can provide the expertise, resources, and support that institutions need to successfully offer these courses. Three Takeaways for University Presidents and Boards Growing demand for online science labs is creating urgency around digital transformation. Students are actively seeking these options and may choose other institutions that offer them. Building out online laboratory options is becoming a strategic imperative. Hands-on laboratory work remains essential for maintaining equivalency with on-campus experiences. While simulations play a role, physical experimentation must be part of online lab courses to ensure comparable learning outcomes. Online lab options offer a broader societal impact beyond individual student success. By making STEM education more accessible and visible, these courses can inspire interest in STEM fields among students' families, peers, and broader communities. Online science lab courses are a growing trend in higher education, and institutions that are prepared to embrace this trend will be well-positioned to meet the needs of their students and the demands of the 21st-century workforce. These are just some of the key insights and opportunities you will hear in this podcast—listen to the full episode for more. Final Thoughts Accreditation is essential, and institutions must ensure that online labs meet the same standards as traditional labs. They need to understand the requirements of their accrediting bodies and have robust methods to assess and demonstrate student learning outcomes. Partnering with experienced companies can be beneficial, but institutions are ultimately responsible for meeting accreditation standards and ensuring quality. The idea of using virtual pre-labs to better prepare students for on-campus labs is promising and could improve student performance in both settings. Institutions need to approach online science labs thoughtfully, balancing innovation with academic rigor and ensuring that students receive a high-quality education. Brittany Voxland and Samantha Drumm are friends turned business partners in Fort Worth, Texas. Realizing their complementary skill sets, they merged their businesses, combining Brittany's social media expertise with Samantha's branding and website skills to form Project Social. This transition from friends to business partners wasn't planned, but it felt natural, providing them with the energy and motivation to stay creative and driven. They emphasize the importance of “leaning into what felt right” as a key factor in their success. Both women come from corporate backgrounds, with Brittany working in HR and Samantha in government PR, but they sought a career that would allow them the freedom to balance their family lives with meaningful work. Their entrepreneurial journey also led them to open Elle Maxine, a women's boutique in Fort Worth. They treat the boutique as a client of Project Social, using the marketing strategies they've developed to build a welcoming, aesthetically pleasing shopping space that's accessible to everyone. The boutique, with its chic yet comfortable vibe, feels like a place where customers can relax, enjoy a glass of champagne, and shop.Brittany and Samantha attribute much of their success to the supportive Fort Worth community, noting how their clients have become friends who continue to support their ventures. The close-knit nature of the Fort Worth area has been instrumental in the growth of both Project Social and Elle Maxine. They also talk about the challenges of balancing business and life, agreeing that perfect balance is a myth. Instead, they've found a sense of harmony by involving their families in their work, whether it's their children helping out at the boutique or understanding the work that goes into running a business. One of the key lessons they've learned in business is the importance of delegation. As their businesses have grown, they've realized the value of trusting their team and empowering others to take on responsibilities. Project Social now has a strong team, and both women emphasize that growth requires letting go of tasks and relying on the right people. Ultimately, for Brittany and Samantha, entrepreneurship is about creating a legacy for their families. They want their children to see the value in hard work and experience the joy that comes from building something meaningful. Their story is one of friendship, creativity, community, and the ability to balance the demands of business with the rewards of family life. This episode highlights how two friends took a leap of faith, merged their talents, and created businesses that reflect their passion and commitment to their families and the Fort Worth community. Also, if you haven't done so already, follow our podcast! Next Level Soul with Alex Ferrari: A Spirituality & Personal Growth Podcast
In the realm of ancient mysteries and untapped knowledge, our latest podcast episode features the brilliant Geoffrey Drumm. With a lifelong passion for ancient Egypt, Geoffrey delves deep into the enigma of the Great Pyramid, proposing a groundbreaking theory about its true purpose. As he reveals, these monumental structures were not mere tombs but sophisticated chemical reactors designed for a variety of applications, from industrial-scale chemical production to advanced mining operations.Geoffrey's fascination with Egypt began in childhood, inspired by adventurous tales of Indiana Jones and a profound curiosity about ancient civilizations. This passion led him to explore alternative theories about the Great Pyramid's function, diverging from the conventional belief in its role as a mere electrical generator. Instead, Geoffrey posits that the pyramids were used to produce chemicals such as ammonia and sulfuric acid on an industrial scale, a hypothesis grounded in extensive research and first-hand expeditions to Egypt. One of the most striking aspects of Geoffrey Drumm's theory is his detailed explanation of how the pyramids harnessed natural forces. "The Egyptian pyramids were operational during a time period from 8500 BCE to 5300 BCE, a time known as the Sahara wet period," Geoffrey explains. During this era, the pyramids utilized naturally occurring thunderstorms and geological features to power their chemical processes. This revelation sheds new light on the advanced understanding of physics and chemistry possessed by ancient Egyptians.Geoffrey's hypothesis extends beyond the Great Pyramid, encompassing other significant structures like the step pyramid, red pyramid, and Bent Pyramid. He describes a network of interconnected pyramids and temples that worked together to produce a range of chemicals essential for ancient Egyptian society. From agricultural fertilizers to compounds used in mining and metallurgy, these ancient technologies showcase a level of sophistication that rivals modern industrial processes.SPIRITUAL TAKEAWAYSAncient Wisdom and Modern Science: Geoffrey's research bridges the gap between ancient wisdom and modern scientific understanding, highlighting the advanced knowledge of physics and chemistry possessed by ancient civilizations. The Power of Nature: The pyramids' reliance on natural forces like lightning and geological features underscores the profound connection ancient Egyptians had with their environment, harnessing its power for technological advancements.Holistic View of Ancient Technologies: Geoffrey's comprehensive approach provides a holistic view of ancient technologies, emphasizing the interconnectedness of various pyramids and their roles in supporting a thriving, complex society. In his exploration, Geoffrey also touches upon the spiritual and therapeutic aspects of the pyramids. The temples and structures surrounding the pyramids were designed not only for practical purposes but also for spiritual ascension and healing. This dual purpose reflects a deep understanding of the interplay between the physical and metaphysical realms, a concept that continues to captivate researchers and spiritual seekers alike. In conclusion, Geoffrey Drumm's insights offer a fresh perspective on one of history's greatest mysteries. His dedication to uncovering the true function of the Great Pyramid and other ancient structures reveals a civilization far more advanced than previously imagined. These revelations not only challenge our understanding of history but also inspire us to explore the hidden potentials of natural forces and ancient wisdom. Please enjoy my conversation with Geoffrey Drumm.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/next-level-soul-podcast-with-alex-ferrari--4858435/support.

Living legends. One of them is Dr. Mitch Drumm. He was part of the team with Dr. Francis Collins who discovered the gene that cause CF. They were all at the University of Michigan. You'll hear the connection Laura and Mitch have, and they didn't know it until this podcast! Dr. Drumm is a living CF hero.Dr. Drumm earned his doctoral degree while in a lab with Dr. Francis Collins, the former director of the NIH and at that time, in 1989 the pair co-discovered the gene that causes CF.The discovery of the gene that causes CF was one of the biggest contributions to science, and even though science didn't move as fast as we wanted in 1989 when this gene was discovered, it still moved pretty fast….look where we are today with a modulator drug that corrects the underlying condition of CF, and more possibilities in the pipeline.Dr. Mitch Drumm is one of those scientific hero's. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Genetics and Genome sciences, vice chair of translational research, director of the Research Institute for Children's healh and is at the CF Clinic at Case Western Reserve University.Because of the successes in cystic fibrosis, Dr. Drumm brought together faculty from across the Case Western Reserve University campus in 2015 to form The Research Institute for Children's Health. This institute was launched to implement laboratory-to-clinic research programs for other rare, genetic disorders, patterned after the CF approach. Dr. Drumm currently serves as the Institute's director, using it as infrastructure for rare disease research, but also as a platform for community outreach. His current research in CF focuses on gene editing approaches to therapy and he has active programs to understand altered metabolism in CF, problems of CF intestines, and how genes that modify CF disease severity convey their effects. Dive into the depths of the murky waters of Marxist value theory with Colin Drumm, the founder of Mimbres School, for an enlightening exploration. We examine the labyrinth of different interpretations, their birth in a politically charged context, and the reflections of Marx's idealistic concept of a liberal economy, sans state, in his work. We unwrap Petty's theories of surplus value, shedding light on the enigma that Marx's understanding of value theory often is, and challenging your preconceived notions. Our journey extends through economic theory development and the repercussions of capitalized value and taxation. William Petty's contribution to the transformation of surveying and his impact on the valuation of seized land is a highlight we delve into with gusto. We further explore the debates on tax proportioning post the civil war and its influence on our current comprehension of value. The discussion on Smith's theories - their influence on our perception of economic security and military strength, the Ricardo-Malthus debate on managing large permanent debt, and the birth of Keynesian theory, promises to be a riveting exploration.Lastly, we dissect and critique Marxist and MMT Economic Theories. Colin's analysis of Marx's labor theory of value, the intricacies, and its implications on government authority and money, presents a compelling narrative. We debate the problems with our intellectual history beyond Marxism and its influence on our present understanding of economics. We conclude our conversation by questioning economic growth, its implications, power dynamics, and distribution, urging you to reassess traditional economic theories and explore alternate perspectives. Tier two (R2) research and smaller institutions, including two-year, minority-serving, and tribal colleges, can now build solid research infrastructures and perform groundbreaking discoveries through research enterprises on the same scale as larger R1 and flagship universities. In this episode of Changing Higher Ed®, Drumm speaks with Sethuraman Panchanathan, Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF). They discuss how his organization helps democratize ideas in higher education, enabling all colleges and universities to solve real-world problems and revitalize their communities. The NSF achieves this through programs like the Nationally Transformative Equity and Diversity (GRANTED) and Enabling Partnership to Increase Innovation Capacity (EPIIC). Dr. Panch also discusses NSF's mission and vision. He talks about its recent $44 million program that helps fund projects across the US. Additionally, Drumm refers to another NSF program as "a tech transfer on steroids." Moreover, they explore what smaller institutions with few resources need to do to start conducting research. Podcast Highlights NSF's Regional Innovation Engines is a $44 million investment that partners with communities to utilize regional potentials like the Hazleton pilot converting hemp into carbon-negative building materials through collaboration with Penn State University and community colleges. The cross-cutting TIP Directorate pulls discoveries into the industry, creating impactful solutions by fostering partnerships and bringing back new ideas to address real-world problems. GRANTED and EPIIC programs support the growth of research infrastructure and capacity at national and minority-serving institutions, enhancing access to resources and regional innovation ecosystems. Geoffrey Drumm is an Egyptologist and self-taught chemist who has theorized that several ancient Egyptian pyramids were not pharaonic burial chambers - they were industrial manufacturing plants for ammonia based fertilizer and the raw materials used for metallurgy. His presentation begins inside the red pyramid, whose three chambers mirror the three stages of nitrogen fixation used in the Haber-Bosch process we depend upon today. We talk about the physical evidence his investigations have uncovered, the difficulty of doing research in Egypt, and pervasive belief of a primitive history for ancient civilizations Support the scientific revolution by joining our Patreon: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB Tell us what you think in the comments or on our Discord: https://discord.gg/MJzKT8CQub (00:00:00) Go! We also talk about his book, "The Land of Chem - An Initiation Into Ancient Chemistry Through the Degrees of the Egyptian Pyramids", and using manual to collect methane, make ammonia, and then using that to create many other things. We chat about his experiments, the resonance and pressure chambers within the pyramids, the Red Pyramid, The granite boxes, and the chemical testing that has been done there by the Isida Project. https://thelandofchem.com/ https://isida-project.ucoz.com/ In the intro we chat about UFO's, Darren's travels and the latest Magic on the Mountain at Shasta, our youtube strike and more.... https://youtu.be/r7Ybc6-ZZ78 Help support the show, because we can't do it without ya.
