In the first of four episodes in our new series covering the work and career of pop titan Beyoncé, DJ Louie is joined by Senior Writer at Rolling Stone, Brittany Spanos, to discuss the group that started it all: Destiny's Child.  Louie and Brittany begin with a broad history of black R&B girl groups, specifically the ‘90s wave of which DC was a part, and the ever-evolving way black women have presented themselves in the pop space. They then discuss Beyoncé's early life, how she and her father Mathew Knowles helped form Destiny's Child with the initial lineup including Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson and Letoya Luckett, their 1998 self-titled debut and it's surprise #3 hit, the remix of their ballad “No No No”, “No No No Pt. 2” featuring Wyclef Jean which showcased Beyoncé's signature singing-rapping hybrid. Next, they dive into their smash sophomore album, 1999's The Writing's on the Wall and its innovative singles, all of which featured the groups virtuosic harmonies, a sharp pop feminist perspective that often traded in the role money plays in gender dynamics, and futuristic staccato R&B production courtesy Darkchild and others, before diving into all the tea on how, at the peak of their success, the initial line-up very messily and publicly gave way to a new trio: Beyoncé, Kelly and new member Michelle Williams. Louie and Brittany then cover DC's blockbuster third album, largely an answer to the negative press of the group shake-ups, 2001's Survivor and its attendant hits, the member's various solo endeavors, and how Beyoncé returned to the group following her solo success for one final chapter, 2004's Destiny Fulfilled. Syleena’s passion for health, fitness, and nutrition has also led her to develop a fitness DVD called Mommy’s Got Soul. Constantly on tour and working on exciting projects, Syleena Johnson who is set to release her book, “The Weight is Over”, will show music lovers why she is one sixth of the Daughters of Soul at the ATL Soul Life Music Festival, Memorial Day weekend. The festival will take place in scenic Atlanta, Georgia offering two nights of outdoor, melodically-soulful entertainment. Grammy nominated artists, along with Soul Train nominees will celebrate soul music in its newest and most cutting edge forms, as the genres of Neo-Soul, R&B, Progressive Hip-Hop and extraordinary groups take the stage.

Syleena Johnson is an American Grammy Award nominated R&B and soul singer-songwriter.  She's one of the original cast members on the TV One hit reality series R&B Divas Atlanta and recently wrapped up season 3 with co-stars Keke Wyatt, Angie Stone, Monifah Carter, LaTavia Roberson and former 702 lead singer Kameelah Williams. Syleena also appeared with her sisters on OWN's Iyanla: Fix My Life. As the southeastern US becomes the next hot bed of filmmaking, Tay Smith and Christopher Young are looking to get locla talent in big productions.Young and Smith have managed musicians before taking his talents to actors. The transition has been successful as they now represent several stars including actor Columbus Short ("Scandal"), WWE wrestler, David Otunga, hip hop artist/actor Zane "Lil Zane" Copeland, T.I.'s son Messiah Harris and "R&B Divas" reality star LaTavia Roberson.  We talk to the duo about the ever expanding film scene in the southeast and about the talent they are seeing in the area.

LaTavia Marie Roberson is a 2x Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter-actress respectfully known as an original member of super girl-group Destiny's Child. An entertainment industry veteran since childhood, LaTavia landed her first national campaign as the face of [girl's hair product brand] "Just For Me" at age 8! That same year she became fast friends with a young Beyoncé Knowles whom she'd met during auditions for an all girl ensemble forming in Houston, TX. After both girls made the cut, they were encouraged to invite friends to rehearsals for additional tryouts. Overhearing her classmate Kelendria [Rowland] singing a Whitney Houston tune one day, found a wide eyed LaTavia instantly encouraging her friend to audition. Several months later Beyoncé extended similar invitations to her classmate Letoya Luckett, and the rest became history. As the ensemble developed quite a bit of evolution followed: lineup, moniker and management changes eventually morphed the group into a foursome the world would come to know as Destiny's Child. The girl’s years of hard work and determination paid off in the form a major record deal with Sony/Columbia Records. Destiny’s Child’s first 2 albums earned LaTavia extensive singer/songwriter credits & garnered #1 hits like “Bills, Bills, Bills" & "Say My Name".
