Latent Image (Star Trek: Voyager, S5 E11) was recommended by Tana he/they, who said: I always love when Trek does a moral dilemma episode. Sometimes they pull it off, sometimes not so great. This one is probably a mix of both to be honest. The Doctor is sentient and sapient, but he's still a program in many ways and sometimes a program when pushed so far beyond its limits breaks, but is he alive and free willed enough to push beyond that?Latent Image first aired on January 20, 1999, written by story by Eileen Connors, Brannon Braga and Joe Menosky, teleplay by Joe Menosky, and directed by Mike VejarThe Doctor finds out that some of his memories have been blocked. The Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook

Joshua Tonks (actor and screenwriter, The Latent Image (2022)) and Becky Darke (The Evolution of Horror, Don't Point That Horror At Me and Return to Eerie, Indiana podcasts) return to Flixwatcher to review Josh's choice Stand by Me. Stand by Me (1986) is a coming-of-age drama directer by Rob (When Harry Met Sally) Reiner and based on the Stephen King novella, The Body. Set in a fictional town of Castle Rock, Oregon in 1959 it tells the story of four friends who go on a hike to find the body of a missing boy. Starring Wil Wheaton as Gordon "Gordie”, River Phoenix as Chris, Corey Feldman as Teddy and Jerry O'Connell as Vern. Even though they are only aged 12 they all have their own struggles, Gordie is grieving the loss of his older and influential brother Dennis "Denny”, Teddy's father is mentally ill, Chris is affected by his families bad reputation and Vern is bullied for his weight. The story is told in a flashback from the point of view of the “writer” who is now an adult Gordon, played by Richard Dreyfuss. Unsurprisingly Stand by Me is rated ‘most liked' on Netflix, it's period piece charm and engaging child actor performances make it the much loved classic and the Flixwatcher scores reflect this. With a runtime under 90 minutes it also scored high on repeat viewing to score 4.42 overall. “The Latent Image” began as a short film and was adapted into a feature in 2022, with Joshua Tonks starring as a writer who is visited by a mysterious stranger while working on a story in a secluded cabin. Tune in to hear all about making this indie queer thriller, how Joshua felt about his character's active imagination and motivations throughout the film, and his thoughts on a variety of famous horror movies.
Regret, ethical decision making and holographic identity surround this weeks episode as the walk with the EMH through his journey in the consequences
Becky Darke (The Evolution of Horror, Don't Point That Horror At Me and Return to Eerie, Indiana podcasts) and Joshua Tonks (actor and screenwriter, The Latent Image (2022)) join Flixwatcher to review Becky's choice Cam. Cam (2018) is a psychological horror thriller directed by Daniel (How to Blow Up a Pipeline) Goldhaber. It stars Madeline Brewer as Alice, AKA Lola, a cam girl with ambitions of being the number one ranked girl on the website FreeGirlsLive. One day Alice finds herself locked out of her account and discovers a doppelgänger Lola active and performing on livestreams. Unable to access her account, Alice determined to get it back blurs the lines between Alice and Lola to find out who or what is has taken her identity. Cam might start as a standard slasher film but it doesn't go down the usual route. While the set up doesn't quite match the ending it is still an interesting and chilling film that looks at identity, isolation and the role technology has on our lives. Recommendability scores for Cam were high and with a runtime of 93 minutes, engagement and repeat viewing scores were also strong to give an overall rating of 3.74. In this episode of Displaced in Space, Angelina and Sam discuss "Latent Image," Season 5, episode 11 of Star Trek: Voyager! This week, we unravel the mystery of the Doctor's missing memories. We also get into a spirited debate over what the episode is, you know, about. And Janeway compares the Doctor to a replicator--though she probably respects the replicator more because it has the coffee.
This week we chat with filmmakers Alex Birrell and returning guest Josh Tonks! This is a special episode because we had Josh on waaaay back on episode 33 (go listen if you haven't!) to talk about The Latent Image short film. And now we have him and writer/director Alex Birrell to chat about the feature film version! “The grotesque has never really affected or frightened me. I guess it's real-life stuff that frightens me much more.” (George A. Romero) In this special bonus horror episode, John and Georgia are pleased to welcome Ryan Carr, artist in residence at the George A. Romero Foundation, to discuss The Amusement Park, a recently rediscovered and restored Romero film that takes a unique and terrifying look at the true horrors that await us all as we age and enter our final years. Ryan is currently hard at work illustrating a graphic novel adaptation of the film (written by Jeff Whitehead). We discuss the unfathomably efficient three-day shooting schedule of The Amusement Park; Romero's editing style, visual storytelling genius, and ability to perfectly balance empathy and cynicism; the challenges of translating a film into a graphic novel; how society's treatment of the elderly (on both the micro and macro levels) has failed to improve since the time the film was made in the 70s; the amazing lead actor Lincoln Maazel and his unforgettably expressive face, which Ryan has now drawn an uncountable number of times; and we honor George A. Romero and his team from The Latent Image, who took a commission project from Lutheran Services and made it into a vivid, thought-provoking, timeless piece of art and social commentary. This is truly a ride you don't want to miss, so queue up and give us a listen!
Grab your camera and retreat to a cabin in the woods because we're discussing the feature version of Alexander McGregor Birrell's The Latent Image (2022). This is quite similar to the short of the same name, with a few tweaks and a boyfriend for lead Ben (Joshua Tonks, guest on our BtVS episode "Once More, With Feeling). But while we're big fans of most of the technical elements (direction, acting, lighting, and set design), Trace struggles with the over-reliance on dream sequences/hallucinations. Questions? Hello and welcome listeners to Episode 201 of Journey with a Cinephile: A Horror Movie Podcast. In this episode, your tour guide, David Garrett Jr., returns to his Traverse through the Threes. The double feature here is Dr. Death (1943) and The Communion Girl (2022). The latter got its wide release in 2023. It also doesn't make a great double feature, but my through line is trying to find the truth before it's too late, in different ways. Life is on the line in both. Also on this episode are Mini-Reviews of Christine (1983), Unwelcome (2022), The Latent Image (2022), The War of the Gargantuas (1966) and a couple episodes of original Twilight Zone. Episode 244 We're back to our regular format this week with four movies and a short film. We'll start out with the latest adaptation of Dracula— well, one chapter of it anyway, “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” (2023). We'll then take a trip to a different kind of cabin in the woods with “The Latent Image,” also from 2023. After we watch a silly short film, we'll wind back the clock with “Amityville 1992: It's About Time” and then watch the action-packed, but still often terrifying, “Aliens” from 1986. We're still talking Voyager, and we're on to Season 5's 'Latent Image', which brings us somehow back to if synthetic life is really life (again?). Our world is made up of facts we are presented with and how we recall them. So what happens if neither data nor memory are reliable? First up: can Janeway trust an alleged defector from a fascist government when he offers help in "Counterpoint"? After that: there's a conspiracy to keep the EMH in the dark about SOMETHING regarding an alien attack and a crewmember he can't recall in "Latent Image"! The Doctor has a crisis when his programming goes into a cyclical loop of ethics and the crew has to erase his memory to keep him from decompiling...that is until he begins to pick up on the clues that they left behind. Yet another example of Voyager starting off the episode with exciting potential and then quickly pivoting into something less exciting. The Doctor is sad in this one, so hunker down. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-measure-of-an-episode/message
Scott just loves to dunk on Janeway. This week, he shows again how horrible she is by forcibly removing the memories from their holographic doctor before he loses it and risks the future healthcare of the crew. Scott is clearly not an adopter of Vulcan ideology.

Happy Friday, CHUDs! What a doozy we have in store this week for EPISODE 147! Our guest this week is a multi-hyphenate best known for THE LATENT IMAGE and Michael Varrati's SO FAR, SO CLOSE... He is also a frequent contributor to The Evolution of Horror AND co-hosts the podcast RETURN TO EERIE, INDIANA (with past guest Becky Darke)... it's JOSHUA TONKS! Now, we have done a lot of Wes Craven films on the show but this one... Oh, this one... MIGHT just be the most divisive one yet. Josh is obviously a fan. Mitch is, obviously, seeing it for the first time and Andy does not rate it. How will this go? The synopsis is as follows... In the small town of Riverton, a local legend tells of a serial killer's oath to come back and kill the seven children who were born on the night he supposedly died. Now 16 years later, Riverton residents are disappearing again, making some wonder if the legend is true. Bug (Max Thieriot), plagued by nightmares all his life, is one of the so-called Riverton Seven, and it's up to him to save his friends from an evil that will not rest. A mysterious scar on the back of Harry Kim's head sends the Doctor down a path of conspiracy towards the realization of a devastating truth. Also, there's a high-level argument about sumo wrestling. Did the Doctor sacrifice the life of everyone's favorite ensign we never met to save the life of everyone's not-favorite ensign we meet a little too often? Can the Doctor survive a run-in with persistent moral uncertainty? Was Janeway actually at that sumo match, or is she doing that thing where you pretend you were at something just to sound cool but then you get called on it? Is “Latent Image” GOOD… or is it GARBAGE?

This time around the Trek Bois discuss a Voyager episode that has not one BUT TWO COOL MORALS? Wow, morality sure is dope, right fellow kids?! The Doctor's memories are being tampered with and he doesn't know why - who could possibly be behind it AND WHY? Dante in the Delta Quadrant. Far away from home, everyone could do with a guide. That’s true whether you’re a 14th-century Italian poet embarking on an ultramundane journey through the afterlife or a Starfleet captain stranded on the far side of the galaxy. While Dante is lucky enough to be aided by the ancient Roman poet Virgil, Kathryn Janeway—who received a copy of Dante’s Divine Comedy as an engagement gift from her fiancé, Mark—must turn to Neelix to guide her through her own dark wood. In this episode of Primitive Culture, host Duncan Barrett is joined by Zachary Fruhling of Meta Treks and To The Journey for a look at how Dante’s Vita Nuova and Divine Comedy are referenced in Star Trek: Voyager, in the episodes “Latent Image” and “Shattered,” respectively. More generally, we consider how well Dante’s archetypal characters—Beatrice, Virgil, and the poet himself—might map onto some of Star Trek’s own protagonists. We also ask whether the cosmology of heaven, purgatory, and hell can tell us anything about the route home from the Delta Quadrant. This week we're shining the spotlight on an epic team-up of terror as we welcome filmmakers Alexander Birrell and Joshua Tonks! Star Trek’s Impossible Choices. Since the publication of William Styron’s novel Sophie’s Choice in 1979, the title has entered the cultural lexicon as a term meaning a difficult situation in which a person must choose between two equally deserving alternatives. Two Star Trek episodes-Discovery’s “Lethe” and Voyager’s “Latent Image,” both written by Joe Menosky-borrow the story’s horrifying central conceit: a mother forced to choose between her children. In Jeri Taylor’s Voyager novel Mosaic, we learn that a similarly unbearable choice early in Kathryn Janeway’s Starfleet career almost destroyed her chances at command, plunging her into deep depression. In this episode of Primitive Culture, hosts Clara Cook and Duncan Barrett consider Star Trek’s approach to impossible choices. For the men and women who want to sit in the captain’s chair, part of their training involves facing the most terrible dilemmas-sending a friend to his death to save the ship or facing the ultimate no-win scenario: the Kobayashi Maru. But are some choices just too awful for human beings to cope with? And what happens when being forced to choose makes us lose something we can never get back? Voyager Season 5 - Essential Trek Philosophy. If you've ever had the urge to replicate yourself some curtains when faced with a late-night existential crisis, then the fifth-season opener of Star Trek: Voyager, "Night" is for you! In "Night" we see perhaps the best example of ennui (boredom) in all of Star Trek, including some guilt-laden soul searching from Captain Janeway. But an existential crisis alone does not a season of Star Trek make. And Voyager season 5 is also filled with various ethical dilemmas juxtaposing utilitarian concern for the greater good with respect for the rights of individuals. In this episode of Meta Treks, hosts Mike Morrison and Zachary Fruhling compare their recommendations for Essential Trek Philosophy from season 5 of Star Trek: Voyager, from the rights and potential of a souped-up 29th century Borg in "Drone" to balancing the best of the past with the possibilities for the future in "11:59." When light sensitive material is exposed to light, a chemical change happens, but this change isn’t necessarily visible. This idea is perhaps part of why early photographers – and early viewers of photographic images – had a hard time with the concept of the latent image, yet it was one of the most important components … Continue reading History of Photography Podcast 9 : Latent Image and Immediate Image →
