L is for Ligtnin' (and) Licks. Ladies Love Loud Losers, listen...In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past six decades, artists the world over in every artistic medium have used Eno's strategy while attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2025, lazy, lackluster yet somehow still award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential theme of their upcoming forty-third episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru K, so naturally, they went with L.Sonic contributors featured in Lightnin' Licks Radio's forty-third episode include: Beastie Boys, National Public Radio, James Todd Smith, Ol' Burger Beats, Prince Paul, De La Soul, Gravediggaz, Method Man, John Ussery. Interview by Kris PetersJJ McCann is a musician well-travelled, negotiating over 30 years in the Australian music industry with his soul and integrity intact.Better known as one of the founding members of Nunchukka Superfly and his work with The Drones, McCann has busied himself with other just as talented bands over the years, with the one common denominator being McCann's driven approach to his craft and his humble and unassuming nature.Last year McCann released his first album under the monicker of JJ McCann Transmission called Hit With Love, collaborating with legendary producer Rob Younger of Radio Birdman and the New Christs who produced every second great Australian rock record in the 80s and 90s (Died Pretty, Hard-Ons, Lime Spiders, Celibate Rifles, Hoodoo Gurus). It proved a masterstroke for McCann, who reached a much wider audience with the album and created enough quality material to still be drawing singles from the album almost 12 months later. But talk to McCann and you get the impression his days of caring about status or success in music are long behind him - if in fact they were ever there. Instead, you get an artist who creates music for the thrill and love of the final result and the opportunity to share a common love with friends.Just the way it should be.With Nunchukka Superfly finally releasing their debut album recently and about to go on tour, McCann is understandably busy these days, but not too busy to be down for a chat with HEAVY."It was officially released last year," he said of the new solo album. "It was kind of a staggered thing that was followed by a couple of film clips, with the last one coming out in March called Amphibious Skin. It's been going well. It's been released here in Melbourne on CheerSquad Records and co-released with French label Beast Records. It's the first record I've released in Australia in 14 years. Everything else I've released in Spain or France, generally because there wasn't a lot of independent labels around 15 years ago, believe it or not. It's picked up a bit since then in Australia."In the full interview, JJ talks more about Hit With Love and the writing and recording process, working with Rob Younger, what sorts of things Younger contributed to the overall sound of the album, the changing tides of music and the importance of sticking to your own path, the release of Nunchukka Superfly's debut album and upcoming shows, future plans and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

This week we will look at 80's bands from the Land Down Under, Australia. Specifically the music scene of Pub Rock which would launch such Iconic Bands such as INXS and Midnight Oil. Pub rock is a style of Australian rock and roll popular throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and still influencing contemporary Australian music in the 2000s decade. The term came from the venues where most of these bands originally played — inner-city and suburban pubs. These often noisy, hot, small and crowded venues were not always ideal as music venues and favored loud, simple songs based on drums and electric guitar riffs. Bands Include: The Saints, Midnight Oil, INXS, IceHouse, Men at Work, The Church, Divinyls, Hoodoo Gurus, Crowded House, The Lime Spiders, and Boom Crash Opera.

Before we get underway with more great tales from extraordinary people with connections to the Manning Valley, we'd like to first thank the composer and performer behind our evocative theme music which we use in every episode. After discovering a love and talent for guitar as a teenager, Ged Corben has gone on to tour, play with and supported many of the world't top rock and roll musicians. Most notably he recorded a number of albums as lead guitarist with Lime Spiders. He continues to play in a number of Sydney based rock and folk bands, and with a new lineup ( now Green Spiders) that includes his equally talented son Tom on drums. As a guitar teacher he's taught and inspired hundreds of children through his Inner West Guitar teaching. Ged has very kindly donated this original composition and performance of 'Waiting For You To Come Along" for use in this podcast (which is, coincidentally, produced by his younger brother Martin). He's another terrific example of the tremendous talent that the Manning Valley gives to the world! We thought you'd like to hear the full version!
Emil Amos (of Grails, Om, Holy Sons, Drifter's Sympathy) joins Bob and Mike to discuss the impact of college radio in the '90s, four-track recording, the Ajax catalog, and nearly getting arrested in Australia, plus songs from Reagan Youth, Bumcello, Jim Shepard, Two Dollar Guitar and more.

In the 1980s, the Lime Spiders were one of Australia’s premier post punk outfits – combining 60’s garage, psychedelic and hard rock to produce a sound like no other. Key to their sound was the distinct vocals of front man Mick Blood, a true rock n roll survivor who has more than paid his dues. He fronts a re-energized Lime Spiders outfit for two big December shows that you do not wanna miss. On episode#82 of The Australian Rock Show, Mick joins us to look over his history and to talk all things rock n roll – arachnid style. Essential listening ! Music by: Lime Spiders, Zoot
Welcome episode 101 of Love That Album podcast. Ian McFarlane is one of Australia’s most authoritative and respected music journalists and historians. He’s been writing about rock music for many years in newspapers like The Australian and Juke as well as fanzines like Prehistoric Sounds. In the 1990s he wrote the definitive guide to the history of Australian popular music, “The Encyclopedia of Australian Rock and Pop”, published by Allen and Unwin. Homes of rock fans had well thumbed copies of the book and in 2017, Ian has finally released the second edition of the encyclopedia to bring it up to date. I was thrilled to welcome Ian onto the show to discuss the book, his motivation for updating it in the internet era when facts (alternative or otherwise) can be found easily online, and some interesting details from our rock heritage. This must be the only book where attention will be given to both Delta Goodrem and The Lime Spiders, the Chantoozies and Radio Birdman. We then go on to talk about one of Ian’s most favourite rock albums, “Lost” by Sydney band Died Pretty. This was the second album from the band, and the discussion ranges from how it differs from their early work, the band’s punk and Paisley underground influences, how one of the greatest songwriters in the country (actually… in the world) improved one of their songs without even knowing who they were, and much much more. Eric Reanimator’s “Album I Love” segment focuses on a band from Arizona in the US called The Naked Prey and their record Under The Blue Marlin….not Australian, but musically a very compatible band to Died Pretty, so a worthy companion piece. I love doing this podcast, primarily for the great conversations I have with other folks who love music and know a lot about its history. Ian was a fantastic co-host in this regard, and I look forward to him coming back to the show again soon. You can download the show by searching for Love That Album in the iTunes store or downloading streaming directly from http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com. Send the show feedback at rrrkitchen@yahoo.com.au (written or mp3 voicemail) or join the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/lovethatalbum If you enjoy what you hear, please tell a friend or ten to tune in. You can (and should) purchase a copy of Ian McFarlane's marvelous encyclopedia from https://www.thirdstonepress.com.au/#austrockpopone or wherever great books are sold (including the finer music stores).

At long last, a new episode....Everybody knows about Nick Cave and the Birthday Party coming from Australia--but what other bands came out around that time, and just after? Here in the US, we heard more about Australia at the end of the 80's with the Paisley Underground / New Psych sound ( Guano Bats, Lime Spiders, --) coming from Down Under. Australia had a TON of punk and post punk bands that we only heard a few of in the US-( like Midnight Oil and Shriekback). Check out the book Inner City Sound : Punk and Post Punk in Australia 1976 - 1985 for a more complete overview-- This episode features Bagavahd Guitars, Radio Birdman, Voight 465, Crime and the City Solution, The Laughing Clowns, The Apartments, The Church, SPK and Severed Heads.
