What if one of punk rock's most essential records wasn't born in London or New York—but in a repressive corner of 1970s Australia? In this episode, we dive into I'm Stranded, the ferocious, lo-fi debut from Brisbane's own The Saints—a band that burned bright before punk even knew what it was supposed to sound like.Recorded in just two days with cranked amps, no overdubs, and a heavy dose of youth rebellion, I'm Stranded delivers raw power with surprising musical depth. The Saints weren't copying anyone—they couldn't. Isolated from punk's UK and US scenes, they built something unique: a mix of garage rock swing, proto-punk energy, and rock 'n' roll heart that would go on to influence everyone from Kurt Cobain to Mark Lanegan. This episode unpacks the album's explosive origins, its unexpected impact overseas, and how the band's refusal to conform—musically or stylistically—helped set a new standard for underground music. We also explore its enduring influence on punk, garage, grunge, and beyond. If you dig bands like The Stooges, The Damned, Radio Birdman, Nirvana, or The Hives, you'll want to hear this one.

Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!Part 2 of our fascinating conversation with Rob Younger, from Radio Birdman. From music production styles, to why some people can't keep it in their pants, there's never a dull moment in this wide-ranging discussion. Enjoy
Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! A special treat for you this episode! Rob Younger, lead singer of legendary Australian group, Radio /Birdman, joins us in the studio to give us his thoughts on everything from music production to the influence of the Beatles on all rock music. Rob's near-encyclopedic knowledge of the rock era is impressive, and fuels a conversation that runs the gamut from John Coltrane to scarcely-known bands of the 90's, with plenty of stops in-between. The conversation went so long, we had to split it into 2 fascinating parts! We had a blast talking to Rob, and hope you do, too. Australian producer Charles Fisher's resume is all over the place. Two of his earliest producing jobs were with Australian punk legends Radio Birdman followed by Air Supply! That kind of diversity continued for decades working with everyone from Olivia Newton-John to Divinyls to Jimmy Barnes to Hoodoo Gurus to Deep Blue Something (as well as more Australian artists like Moving Pictures and Ol' 55). In the 90s he hit the jackpot when he did Savage Garden's debut album that went on to sell over 15 million copies. We often discuss the effect financial success has on an artist's desire to create, but here we hear it from the producer's perspective which is a fascinating story. Enjoy! www.charlesfisherproducer.com www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod

Interview by Angela CroudaceIt is hard to believe that the current line-up of the Hard-Ons (Blackie, Murray, Ray and Tim) have been together long enough to be putting out album number three, but it has to be true, because they are!I Like You A Lot Getting Older - which is out on October 4 - follows 2021's ARIA top 5 debuting I'm Sorry Sir, That Riff's Been Taken and last year's Top 30 debuting Ripper '23 and coincides with the band's 40th Anniversary Australian Tour PLUS the premiere of a new feature length documentary, The Most Australian Band Ever. These Aussie punk legends show no signs of slowing down. While I Like You A Lot Getting Older is undeniably a pop album, Blackie humorously labels it “Pop for old farts.” It's the kind of pop that embodies the Hard-Ons' signature style - not the Taylor Swift variety as he made clear!Despite having so much going on, guitarist Peter Black (Blackie) found time to speak with HEAVY's newest contributor Angela Croudace. We start by asking if he can actually get his head around the fact the Hard-Ons are about to celebrate 40 years as a band."I'm that old?", he laughed, "Excellent. No, I can't believe it. When I actually stop to think about it - which I never do. I never stop and I never think. Those two things, what are they? But when I do stop to think about it, it's kind of like, far out, that's a long bloody time."Angela brings up the new doco, The Most Australian Band Ever."I don't know anything about it," Blackie laughed. "We're not making it. I call him Johnno, but Jonathan Sequeira is making it and he made the phenomenal doco on Radio Birdman, which I loved and have seen four times. So when he approached us and said I'd like to make a doco we all said shit yeah. The dude that made the Birdman doco, for sure. So I'll see it when you see it. If you wanna go see it, and I'm sure in his hands it's gonna be quite fun."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Playlist;(sintonía) DAVIE ALLAN and THE ARROWS “Another cycle in Detroit”ANDRE WILLIAMS “Detroit Michigan”SOUNDS INCORPORATED “Detroit”NIKKI CORVETTE and THE STINGRAYS “Back to Detroit”BLONDIE “Detroit 442”FATS DOMINO “Detroit City Blues”JOHN LEE HOOKER “The motor city is burning”DETROIT featuring MITCH RYDER “Rock’n’Roll”THE ROCKETS “Born in Detroit”THE GORIES “Detroit breakdown”THE DIRTBOMBS “Broke in Detroit again”KISS “Detroit Rock City”RADIO BIRDMAN “Murder City nights”DAVID BOWIE “Panic in Detroit”PRIMAL SCREAM “Detroit”TOM JONES “Detroit City”WAYNE KRAMER “Back to Detroit”Escuchar audio

Interview by Kris PetersJJ McCann is a musician well-travelled, negotiating over 30 years in the Australian music industry with his soul and integrity intact.Better known as one of the founding members of Nunchukka Superfly and his work with The Drones, McCann has busied himself with other just as talented bands over the years, with the one common denominator being McCann's driven approach to his craft and his humble and unassuming nature.Last year McCann released his first album under the monicker of JJ McCann Transmission called Hit With Love, collaborating with legendary producer Rob Younger of Radio Birdman and the New Christs who produced every second great Australian rock record in the 80s and 90s (Died Pretty, Hard-Ons, Lime Spiders, Celibate Rifles, Hoodoo Gurus). It proved a masterstroke for McCann, who reached a much wider audience with the album and created enough quality material to still be drawing singles from the album almost 12 months later. But talk to McCann and you get the impression his days of caring about status or success in music are long behind him - if in fact they were ever there. Instead, you get an artist who creates music for the thrill and love of the final result and the opportunity to share a common love with friends.Just the way it should be.With Nunchukka Superfly finally releasing their debut album recently and about to go on tour, McCann is understandably busy these days, but not too busy to be down for a chat with HEAVY."It was officially released last year," he said of the new solo album. "It was kind of a staggered thing that was followed by a couple of film clips, with the last one coming out in March called Amphibious Skin. It's been going well. It's been released here in Melbourne on CheerSquad Records and co-released with French label Beast Records. It's the first record I've released in Australia in 14 years. Everything else I've released in Spain or France, generally because there wasn't a lot of independent labels around 15 years ago, believe it or not. It's picked up a bit since then in Australia."In the full interview, JJ talks more about Hit With Love and the writing and recording process, working with Rob Younger, what sorts of things Younger contributed to the overall sound of the album, the changing tides of music and the importance of sticking to your own path, the release of Nunchukka Superfly's debut album and upcoming shows, future plans and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Hi-diddly-ho! It's (literally) my neighborino Russell “Rusty” Hopkinson on this episode #23 of LWICFD! For those that don't already know, Rusty is the drummer in one of Australia's most loved bands You Am I (as well as playing drums or guitar in HEAPS of other bands before he joined YAI & also a few after eg Radio Birdman). Rusty is a connoisseur of vinyl records & a walking encyclopaedia when it comes to music, especially garage, punk, soul & funk, (which is lucky as he is also is the Australian rep for NYC based Daptone Records) so tune in as we have a classic yarn that takes us everywhere from the christian rock of Creed to the crazy phasing sounds of cicadas…+ everything in between (including 5 very interesting dinner party guests!) Interview by Kris PetersFifty years of servitude in any industry is a great achievement, but fifty years in the music industry is something special. In an industry that rewards only when you have something of value to offer, bands are churned through the machine at a rapid rate of knots. Yesterday's heroes can quickly become tomorrow's nobodies with everything from changing fashions to styles to bad press being an avenue for failure.Australian rockers Radio Birdman are one of the few bands to not only survive half a century in the music industry but somewhat thrive as well.Radio Birdman were one of the first Australian bands to harness the punk rock attitude that swept through Britain, doing things their way no matter the consequences. They are one of those bands that as soon as you listen to their music you get the "ah, that's who sung it" feels, with an infectious and flippant brand of music showcasing all the hallmarks and foundations of great Aussie rock.To celebrate the occasion, Radio Birdman will hit the road for the Birdman 5-0 Tour, starting June 21, with fellow Australian icons Hard-Ons along for the ride.HEAVY caught up with founding member and guitarist Deniz Tek to take a trip down memory lane. We start by asking if Australia is ready for the finale."The venues that we're playing are essentially the same venues we played on the last tour," he began, "and the last couple of tours. The last time we went around Australia was just before the pandemic in 2019, and it's basically the same venues. We prefer to play two to three shows in a smaller club rather than one big show at the Enmore or the Palace or something like that. It's better for us to play in smaller places."It's a bittersweet tour, celebrating 50 years of the band, but also serving as a swansong, so we ask Deniz how long the band has known they would be ticking both things off at the same time."Just since November," he replied. "We hadn't really talked about it until then, but I was back in Australia for my daughters wedding and the band got together socially, and we talked it over and thought it might be a good idea."In the full interview we take a moment to reflect on what a great achievement 50 years is, the success of presale tickets, limiting the shows and why, what fans can expect, what the band expects from their crowds, the emotion that will surround the last ever show at the Manning Bar in Sydney on July 7, having Hard-Ons as support, Radio Birdman's legendary outsider status and how well it fits, being the underdog, what he has achieved personally and musically over his career, what's left for him to achieve, the band logo and some insights into its origin, his top three commandments of rock and more.

Under the cover of darkness, in the depths of a moonlit night, a gigantic beast arose from the bush. Its colossal figure, a nightmare amalgamation of the elements of nature, crept through the thick forest with spooky ease. As it advanced, twisted vines and old trees bent under its weight, leaving lengthy, ominous shadows that danced like specters in the dim darkness. This enormous creature, known as "The Night Stalker," had eyes like flaming embers, a snarl that echoed through the forest, and it was a living legend in the middle of the woods.Tracks by The Krewmen, Radio Birdman, The Saints, Thee Mighty Caesars, Johnny Thunders & The Hearbreakers, Zombie Ghost Train, and mo'. Still in love with making records, Charles Fisher is currently based in his home studio in Melbourne. He is renowned for his great ears (finding and developing talent; selecting hits), his canny arrangement skills and his psychological skills, getting the best out of a range of personalities. The extraordinarily versatile ‘song doctor' is at home with rock guitars (Radio Birdman, Hoodoo Gurus), popular and orchestral arrangements (Olivia Newton-John, Air Supply, The Seekers), and many other forms including pop and electronica (Savage Garden, 1927). In 1997 Fisher won ARIA Producer of the Year for Savage Garden's Savage Garden; ‘Down on Me' (Hoodoo Gurus); ‘Far Shore' (The Seekers); plus ‘I Am Australian' for Judith Durham, Russell Hitchcock and Dr Yunupingu (RIP) of Yothu Yindi. In the early 21st century Fisher began producing overseas-based acts including Olivia Newton-John, whose ‘(2)' album went platinum; Swedes Ace of Base and Canadians SoulDecision, whose single ‘Faded' went to No.1 in Canada and No.6 in the US and whose album No-One Does It Better went platinum too. Rockshow Episode 164 Radio Birdman Radio Birdman is an Australian punk rock band formed by Deniz Tek and Rob Younger in Sydney in 1974.The group influenced the work of many successful, mainstream bands, and are now considered instrumental in Australia's musical growth. Deniz Tek and Rob Younger formed Radio Birdman in mid-1974 in Sydney, having recently left their bands TV Jones and the Rats respectively. The pair sought to begin a band that would challenge the commercial mainstream and be completely uncompromising. They recruited classical keyboard player Philip "Pip" Hoyle, drummer Ron Keeley and bassist Carl Rorke. The band took their name from a misheard lyric from the Stooges' song "1970" (the actual lyric is "radio burnin'"). After being rejected many times from various venues, and having resorted to putting on its own concerts in rented garages and tiny community halls, by mid 1975 Radio Birdman found an upstairs room at the Oxford Tavern in Taylor Square, Sydney. They eventually took over its management, renaming it The Funhouse.[1] Under their management the Funhouse became a home to other outsider groups. Prior to the opening of this venue, Carl Rorke had left the band and was replaced by longtime friend of Rob Younger, Warwick Gilbert (also a former Rats member). Also to leave the band would be Philip Hoyle, though his departure was short-lived. Guitarist Chris Masuak was initially hired to replace Hoyle. Soon a small but growing subculture grew around Radio Birdman. This coincided with the beginnings of the Sydney punk scene. https://m.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100046816942610 https://www.discogs.com/artist/257177-Radio-Birdman https://open.spotify.com/artist/4cpMQdcPKsbw2SaTjGazQf https://mobile.twitter.com/birdmanfilm https://www.songkick.com/artists/147918-radio-birdman #musicvideo #musicstudio #musiclover #musiclife #musicindustry #musiclovers #musiccover #musician #musicproducer #musicproduction #musicians #musicislife #musicartist #musicphotography #musicvideos #Music #drummer #Guitar @drummers @spotify @twitter #grammy @grammy @Australia #RadioBirdman @RadioBirdman @punk #Punk #goldalbum #Platinumalbum @Platinum @gold Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ https://app.hashtag.expert/?fpr=roberto-rossi80 https://dc2bfnt-peyeewd4slt50d2x1b.hop.clickbank.net Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-lumped-up-with-rob-rossi/id1448899708 https://open.spotify.com/show/00ZWLZaYqQlJji1QSoEz7a https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support

Since the Beatles showed up with a built-in songwriting team, bands have always had those members who practised the mysterious art of creating and arranging compositions rather than relying on outside professionals to do that for them. Of course, even those great songsmiths liked to take a break and release an album of music that inspired them to pick up the quill and ink in the first place – Bowie's “Pinups”, Patti Smith's “12”, John Lennon's “Rock n Roll” (maybe more for contractual obligations, but still...) Now we can add Australian songwriter John Kennedy's “Raining Treasure” to that mix. Welcome to episode 158 of Love That Album. John's been making great records since the 1980s with his bands like John Kennedy's Love Gone Wrong and JFK and the Cuban Crisis. His music has always had an Americana flavour to it, and he writes wonderful tales of life in Sydney. His 2017 album JFK and the Midlife Crisis was a concept album about a middle aged musician recalling his times younger days in Sydney working in the indie music scene and where he now sees himself. In 2019, this led to the idea of recording an album of covers from fellow travellers in Australian independent music of the 70s and 80s, “Raining Treasure – Australian Indie Gold Covers Vol.1”.In 2022, John and his band The '68 Comeback Special have released a second volume, “Raining Treasure – More Australian Indie Gold Covers Vol.2” with their interpretations of songs from The Scientists, Weddings Parties Anything, Radio Birdman, and (in an extension of the definition of “independent”) The Angels (aka Angel City in the US). These are not carbon copies of their originals – the gents put deep thought into the arrangements of these songs, and the results in some cases show a greater musical alignment with the lyrics. I met up with John Kennedy and Peter Timmerman from the band to discuss these great albums. Tales are also told of the oppressiveness of Queensland under the Bjelke-Petersen government, John's “Sex Pistols” moment meeting the Go Betweens, and whether it's appropriate for an audience to chant during a cover of THAT Angels song. If you're a fan of Kennedy, you won't want to miss this. If you're unfamiliar with his work, you're in for a treat. If you're a fan of Kennedy, you won't want to miss this. If you're unfamiliar with his work, you're in for a treat.
