Del Norte Credit Union has helped people achieve their personal financial goals for over 65 years. Now, DNCU is applying that same fiscal know-how to small business banking. Hosts Andrea Klunder and Josh Stringer introduce folks to DNCU's brand new small business department with its enhanced menu of services, including loans, remote deposit, payroll services plus business checking and savings options that cater to your needs––with Del Norte Credit Union's Kevin Southwick, Chief Member Business Officer, and Linda Rodriguez Brandt, Business Services Development Officer. While DNCU's small business services focus on micro-to-medium businesses, the enthusiasm from two of its leading representatives is super-sized. “We are really excited to have this new department at our institution,” says Kevin. “We focus on the community. That's where our heart is; that's where our passion is.”  What better way to share that passion with surrounding communities than by providing additional opportunities for financial success? “We want to see people happy in the flourishing and comfortable, economically, and we think the key to that is to advocate and hold up the small businesses that are really the heartbeat of Santa Fe.” Linda shares Kevin's commitment to local entrepreneurs and small business owners. “I want to help give them the tools and the resources and information they need or want to succeed and grow their business in the community and flourish so their life is the best that it can be.” She understands that the financial aspects of turning a dream into reality can feel intimidating, not to mention isolating. DNCU's business services offer practical solutions to minimize challenges, maximize potential, and build lasting relationships so you never have to go it alone. Now's the time to get down to (small) business. Del Norte Credit Union is the perfect partner. Financial Tea Hot Sip: Ready to talk to a credit union about your small business? Kevin recommends not getting caught up in dollars and cents. Instead, paint a clear, passionate picture of your goal. A business services representative can help you color in the financial specifics. Not sure if your dream will translate into reality? Linda advises folks to create an action plan by capturing ideas all in one place––on paper or with a favorite notes app. FEATURED GUESTS Kevin Southwick Chief Member Business Officer Del Norte Credit Union Linda Rodriguez Brandt Business Services Development Officer Del Norte Credit Union Learn more and send your feedback and questions at: http://www.financialteainthemorning.com *** Financial Tea in the Morning is brought to you by Del Norte Credit Union. In 2020, Dawn Davis, took the reins as editor-in-chief of Bon Appétit along with Condé Nast's other food brands including Epicurious, Healthyish, and Basically, across digital, video, OTT, social and print platforms. In doing so, she made history as the first woman of color to hold this position. Acknowledged as "a book world star" by the New York Times in their coverage of the appointment, Dawn's editorial vision is directing a new chapter at the 65-year-old publication. Each year in October, Bon Appétit celebrates the "Hot Ten", a list of America's Best New Restaurants in its Restaurant Issue. This year, under Dawn's guidance, the Restaurant Issue was redefined and is reflective of the times. The issue honors "the restaurants, people and organizations that gave us hope with a brand-new awards list, Heads of the Table." The issue celebrates the resilience, variety of food, and the people who make them run, the ones that sprang up or pivoted during the pandemic to help their communities and others in the industry who needed it most, from giving opportunities to the formerly incarcerated to feeding neighbors. Dawn spent decades as an accomplished publisher and author, with a passion for food and culture. Her prolific publishing career at 37 Ink, a Simon & Schuster imprint, included bestselling and award-winning titles: Heads of the Colored People by Nafissa Thomas-Spires, winner of the 2019 Whiting Award; the National Book Award finalist, Never Caught: The Washingtons' Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave; Ona Judge by Erica Armstrong Dunbar; and several New York Times bestsellers , including Tough Love: My Story of the Things Worth Fighting For by Susan Rice; The Butler: A Witness to History by Wil Haygood, later becoming a major motion picture directed by Lee Daniels; The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae that helped pave the way for her tv show, Insecure; and I Can't Make This Up by Kevin Hart. Her time at HarperCollins, overseeing the Amistad imprint, resulted in publishing numerous well-known, highly acclaimed authors, including Edward P. Jones, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Known World; Attica Locke, author of Black Water Rising; and Chris Gardner, author of The Pursuit of Happyness, that also became a major motion picture starring Will Smith. Her passion for food culture is exhibited in the first cookbook she acquired, Recipe of Memory: Five Generations of Mexican Cuisine by Mary Lau Valle and Victor M. Valle, and was nominated for two Julia Child Cookbook Awards and a James Beard Award. As an author, Dawn wrote If You Can Stand the Heat: Tales from Chefs and Restaurateurs profiling some of the most dynamic chefs of the times including Edna Lewis, Bobby Flay, Anthony Bourdain, Michael McCarthy, Patricia Williams and Linda Rodriguez. Listen in as Dawn and host, Brad Johnson, discuss some of the featured people, stories and recipes in the October issue of Bon Appétit: The Restaurant Issue, along with a variety of other topics including: Dawn's journey that led to publishing, some of her favorite Martha's Vineyard places to visit; reflections from time spent in Nigeria; the significance of a high-profile restaurant going meatless; expanding the dialogue around African American cuisine's contribution to American cuisine; her cookbook collection; and stories about the interesting chefs she included in the book she authored. Host Bree Davies speaks with Linda's attorney David Seligman, who portrays her as a woman caught in an impossible situation, compelled to stand up for what she thought was right. We also hear from Linda herself about the conditions inside DEN3, the Amazon fulfillment center in Thornton where she says Amazon neglected to communicate important COVID safety information with its Spanish-speaking workforce. David Seligman is also executive director of the local legal nonprofit Towards Justice, which you can learn more about here: https://towardsjustice.org/ If you want to read more about Linda's case, here's a link to the formal complaint David and his colleagues at Swain Law LLC filed with the Department of Labor and Employment on Thursday: https://towardsjustice.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/5.6.21-amazon-final.pdf Get the tweets: @citycastdenver  Get the newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/citycast/denver

If you’ve toured through any old world cities, you’ve probably marveled at ancient buildings that have stood the test of time. You might think to yourself, “They sure made things to last back in those days.” And while the Notre Dame Cathedral or the Parthenon or the Tower of London may seem like proof of the superior workmanship of a bygone era, what you don’t see are all the other buildings erected during the same period that have since crumbled or been torn down.In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, we look at a bias that often clouds the way we evaluate success and failure. We begin with the scientific awakening of Joseph Banks Rhine in the 1920s, during the peak of the spiritualist movement. Rhine was trained in science and wanted to apply the scientific method to his research into paranormal phenomena. Science taught him to be skeptical, so when Rhine’s research results seemed to demonstrate the existence of extra-sensory perception, or ESP, he believed he had found proof of a new aspect of human nature. The findings led to academic accolades and substantial financial support, until others tried to replicate his results.Next, we present a survey on musical acts and college drop-outs to demonstrate how easy it is to discount important information—when that information is not readily apparent.  To look at the science behind this bias, Katy has enlisted two scholars to help explain it in different contexts. First, Sendhil Mullainathan provides useful examples of the bias in the world of investing and hiring. Sendhil is the Roman Family University Professor of Computation and Behavioral Science at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He’s also the co-author of the book Scarcity: Why Having Too Little Means So Much. Then, Emily Oster talks about the ways that doctors and parents sometimes unintentionally ignore important information when attempting to solve problems. Emily is a professor of economics at Brown University. Her most recent book is called Cribsheet: A Data-Driven Guide to Better, More Relaxed Parenting From Birth to Preschool. Choiceology is an original podcast from Charles Schwab. This episode of Blackanese Chick has Rhett Thompson headed to her guest appearance on the debut of Miami Jolt Radio's "Funny In Pink" show hosted by comedian Julie Baez. Rhett hates driving and planned the perfect Metrorail commute to Wynwood, the artisty design district. The show had fellow guest Linda Rodriguez of Mission Lotus Life. Rhett took a detour on the way home due to a reselling shipment on Mercari and learned something new about shipping with FedEx. Rhett then went to the Very Very Beginning of her family history, the Black side from Akron, Ohio, and the Japanese side from Tokyo, Japan. Then her mouth got super dry from not bringing spare liquids on the road. It happens. Originally recorded June 10th, 2019. Thank you for listening! Jackson Poetry Prize Winner Speaks Patricia Spears Jones has been writing poetry since she was twenty and then she was “good.” Today, the prolific poet is the winner of one of the most prestigious poetry prizes–the Jackson Poetry Prize. She has numerous published collections, and A Lucent Fire, New & Collected Poems (White Pines Press, 2015), is a report on the current state of everything. “Poetry is hard work,” Jones says. Yet the job of the poet is to say something that will matter, that can improve the daily and momentary experience of living and speak back to American capitalist business when it comes to gentrification, stolen history, and racist hatred. Rachel Levistsky of Bomb Magazine writes “Jones's poems insist on making vibrantly possible American, black, female, queer, poor, jazz, assimilated, heroic, unemployed, crazy, displaced lives that, considering the constant assault on them, can appear merely endangered and precarious.” Additionally, A Lucent Fire croons with blues and gospel, on Cuban and opera. “Her poems are full of harmony, counterpoint, rhythm, songs, and a meticulous aesthetic,” says Linda Rodriguez of La Bloga. When asked “what is Poetry?” Spear Jones suggest checking out George Quasha's wonderful video. Spears Jones is the author of Painkiller (Tia Chucha Press, 2010), Femme du Monde (Tia Chucha Press, 2006), and The Weather That Kills (Coffee House Press, 1995). She has been the recipient of numerous awards, fellowships and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, the Goethe Institute, and the Bread Loaf Writers Conference. A resident of New York City since the 1970s, Spears Jones currently serves as a fellow of the Black Earth Institute and has long been involved with the Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church. She has taught at Cave Canem, Parsons School of Design, The New School, Sarah Lawrence College, and Naropa University, and she currently teaches at CUNY. Learn more about your ad choices.
