Concert will benefit Beacon exchange program Ten years ago, singer and actor Kelly Ellenwood lost her voice after contracting whooping cough, an ironic twist because for four years she played the part of an opera prima donna who began singing like a frog in The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. To help regain the vocalizing, in 2016 she joined Stephen Clair (guitar) and Kathleen Bosman (violin, viola) to perform songs by German American composer Kurt Weill and French chanteuse Edith Piaf. On June 22, at 6 p.m., the Saint Rita trio (supported by Nate Allen and Brad Hubbard) will perform a program called Lost & Found at the Howland Cultural Center in Beacon featuring deep cuts and popular songs from the pair's repertoire. The show is a benefit for Beacon High School's German American Partnership Program, established in 2022 with support from the German founders of the Beacon-based software firm Docuware. It brings foreign students to Beacon in October. On June 28, to complete the annual exchange, 18 Beacon teens and two teachers leave for Munich. Ellenwood, known for getting things done around town, got the call and implemented the nuts and bolts with the Parent Teacher Student Organization. This year, with help from the U.S. State Department and the Goethe Institute in Manhattan, the school district took over responsibility for its administration. Growing up in Nebraska, Ellenwood studied in Finland as an exchange student and aimed to be a diplomat, but the arts beckoned. There is no German language program at Beacon High School, she says, but "last year, a bunch of students, led by Skylar Clair, started a German study group and some of the kids are going this year, so this is changing lives." Rita, "patron saint of the impossible," says Ellenwood, is also the name of a new 100-seat music venue at the KuBe Art Center that she and her family plan to open with trombonist Dick Griffin on July 19 in the former high school's band room. Relevant to the concert, Piaf is said to have asked friends "to pray for Saint Rita, patron saint of lost causes" before her death from liver cancer in 1963 at age 47. The June 22 show will include Piaf's most popular song, "La Vie En Rose," which sold 1 million discs in the U.S. when released as a single in 1947. After Mack David translated the lyrics into English in 1950, eight artists charted with it, including Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong. Weill fused pop and classical music and collaborated with Ogden Nash, Bertolt Brecht and Ira Gershwin, among others. His hits include "Mack the Knife," "Bilbao Song" and "Alabama Song" (covered as "Whisky Bar" on the first album by The Doors). "We do a down-and-dirty version" of the latter, says Ellenwood, which is saying something because the song is about "prostitutes looking for the next trick - sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll - in 1930." The Howland Cultural Center is located at 477 Main St. in Beacon. Tickets are $20 at dub.sh/saint-rita-show.

I am joined in this podcast by Barbara Ludwig to discuss her experience of CJD, the disease that her husband Jürgen died from, and which she narrated in her excellent memoir No Time To Cry. She explained how and why she was able to assume and convey her husband's perspective of his illness experience, and how she used the title of the book to convey the importance of time in context of illness.Barbara explored Jürgen's early symptoms with walking difficulty and anxiety, and how this progressed to disorientation and paranoid jealousy. She also captured the uncertainty that trailed his early diagnostic process as all investigations initially failed to confirm a diagnosis, and the uncertainty of how long he had to live. She discussed how he was initially thought to have multiple sclerosis and then a psychological disorder, and how the diagnosis of sporadic CJD was eventually confirmed by spinal fluid analysis, and later by post-mortem examination.Barbara also explored the burdensome care that Jürgen required, initially provided by her, but eventually by a nursing home where his terminal illness played out. We also discussed how she has coped since the death of Jurgen.Barbara Ludwig grew up in the western part of Berlin. She met Jürgen during her training in local government. They went to Australia after their wedding, and then to Lake Constance in the south of Germany near the border to the Swiss. She worked at the university there whilst Jürgen studied. They then moved to Munich where she worked for many years at the Goethe Institute as head of human resources. Today she writes Mallorca crime novels with passion, and she has been living for five years with her new partner in Bad Orb in the Spessart, near Frankfurt. Her latest book is 'Do You Love the Sea?'

In the Season 5 premiere, Anna McCorvey RA, LEED AP BD+C talks about inspiring professional journey and her mission-driven work. Anna shares the story behind founding the River East Design Center (REDC) in Southeast D.C., emphasizing its focus on addressing community needs before initiating design projects. She discusses the center's focus on educational outreach and conceptual design services, aiming to empower local residents with crucial information. Anna also opens up about her role as an Equitable Development Manager at the Building Bridges Across the River (11th Street Bridge Park Project), her fellowship experience with the Goethe Institute and why authentic community engagement is critical to meaningful change. The episode concludes with reflections on her personal backgrounds and shared passion for community-focused design. Anna McCorvey is a practicing architect in Washington, DC whose initial interest in architecture was spiked at an early age through public housing. At the early age of 5 she noticed the subtle and sometimes flagrant differences between the housing and schools from one part of town to the next. Her desire to understand these differences and address them led her to a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Howard University and a Master of City Planning degree from the University of California Berkeley with a housing and community development emphasis. Upon graduating, she spent 6 years working on affordable and low-income housing developments, schools, day care facilities and recreation centers, many of which were in some of DC's most underserved communities. With a strengthened commitment to design equity in underserved communities, she founded The River East Design Center (REDC) in 2018. As a nonprofit community design center, REDC is a resource to communities that desire to learn more about architecture and planning and be active in development projects in their neighborhoods. After designing a mobile retail kiosk for one of the 11th Street Bridge Park's small business initiatives, Anna was invited to join the 11th Street Bridge Park team as their Senior Equitable Development. In this role, Anna oversees a series of programs designed to prevent displacement in communities surrounding the park by equipping residents and businesses to thrive in future economic changes. In these various capacities, Anna regularly leads workshops and discussions on community engagement, community centered design, and issues of diversity representation within the design professions. This work awarded her the honor of being a 2021 Public Interest Design Fellow with the DC Public Library and the Goethe Institute and the recipient 2023 Wieb Award for Architecture in the Public Interest. Anna is a resident of DC's Anacostia neighborhood and enjoys short runs along the Anacostia River, traveling anywhere she's never been and Sunday night funk music at JoJo 's Restaurant. In this dialogue, Prof Christo Doherty, the Chair of Research in the Wits School of Arts, speaks Ale de la Puente, an independent artist-researcher from Mexico who is doing a residency in Johannesburg as part of the Goethe Institute's international Studio Quantum programme. Ale has studied industrial design, goldsmithing, boatbuilding, navigation, astronomy, physics, and philosophy. She is known for her poetic and conceptual explorations of time and space across a wide field of mediums, ranging from installations and sculptures to drawings, photography, and video, including art science expeditions in search of symbolic natural phenomena, how we signify them, and how, very importantly, we relate to the given meanings in art and life. Ale is a fellow of the National System of Arts Creators in Mexico. She has exhibited her work both nationally in a wide range of international galleries from the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico to the Polytechnic Museum (Moscow) and the Bass Museum of Art, in Miami, Florida to name but a few. Her work is part of leading public and private collections. Ale first developed art-science projects in collaboration with the Astronomy Institute and Nuclear Science Institute of National Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM, going on to work with the Schmidt Ocean Institute in California, the Roscosmos in Russia, and the Kosmica Institute in Berlin and Mexico City. Amongst her many collaborations with scientists are the projects "Desire", "Matters of Gravity" and "Finding the Centre" which we will discuss in this podcast, as well as the project she is beginning in Johannesburg as part of the Goethe Institut's Studio Quantum initiative - an international events and artist-in-residence programme which is exploring emerging quantum technologies through the lens of art. In this podcast we discuss how Ale came to art practice, beginning with her accidental discovery of Industrial Design and her first art-science collaborations with the Institute of Astronomy at the National Autonomous University of Mexica. We then unpack what went into the public space art-intervention she called "Desire" where , working with artisan firework craftsmen, she built an artificial comet that flew in the evening sky above Mexico City in 2016. We explore how she navigates the challenges as an artist engaging with the scientific lab through her experience of working at the European Council for Nuclear Research (CERN) where she has had two residencies, We then look at her collaborative project with 6 other artists called Matters of Gravity (2012-14), where they elaborated the different implications of zero gravity using the facilities at Star City in the Yuri Gagarin Cosmosnaut Training Centre outside Moscow. Finally we discuss the lessons that Ale has drawn from her extensive engagement with scientists working in a wide variety of disciplines and how she is going about her work on her project, entitled "Is it going to rain" with the Quantum Studio project in Johannesburg. German citizenship is in demand again. The latest example is the naturalization of 20 Australians in one fell swoop at a ceremony at the Goethe Institute in Sydney. Recipients of citizenship also include numerous young descendants of Jewish ancestors who were expelled from their homes by the Nazis. Consul General Felix Schwarz underlines that he is particularly pleased with this naturalization ceremony.

Born in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar, composer, pianist and arranger Shuteen Erdenebaatar (*1998) brings a unique sound to the audience with her yearning melodies enriched with profound and expressive harmonies and rhythms. The daughter of Erdenebaatar Gombo, who recently earned the title “The Emeritus of Art” for his 40 years as director of the National Mongolian Opera, and Batkhuyag Ochirbat, a television director and journalist, Shuteen was brought up surrounded by arts and culture - particularly classical music. Accordingly, she studied classical piano and classical composition at the State Conservatory of Ulaanbaatar before coming into contact with jazz through a program at the Goethe Institute. "It was then that a whole new world opened up to me," she says. "Suddenly I had the freedom to play what I heard in my heart, not just what was written in the notes. With her bachelor's degree in classical music in hand at age 20, she yearned to explore the world of jazz and eventually came to study at the Conservatory in Munich. A key moment. She earned two master's degrees both in Jazz Performance and in Jazz Composition, and most importantly was able to find and cultivate her own jazz voice.  Shuteen Erdenebaatar is a laureate of the prestigious BMW Young Artist Jazz Award 2022, the 1st Prize and the audience award for the legendary Young Munich Jazz Award, the Music Scholarship of the City of Munich 2022, the Composition Prize at the Biberach Prize 2022 and the 1st Prize at the Kurt Maas Jazz Prize 2021, among others. Her compositions have been played in the Munich Philharmonic Hall or in Studio 2 of the Bavarian National Radio. Furthermore, she has also been commissioned by Mongolia's most significant orchestras, such as the Bayan Mongol Big Band, the Mongolian State Philharmonic Orchestra or the Mongolian State Opera Symphony Orchestra.  Currently she is working as a composer and pianist on her own projects such as the Shuteen Erdenebaatar Quartet, the Lightville Duo, and as a conductor for her newly formed 20-piece, cross-genre Chamber Jazz Orchestra in Munich. In 2023, she signed a three-album agreement with the multi-Grammy award-winning New York label Motema Music, which includes all three of her current projects. The first album Rising Sun with her quartet was released on September 15, 2023.  About Rising Sun:  Erdenebaatar's classical foundation is unmistakable throughout, displayed by her technical brilliance, stylistic finesse, and the thematic structure of her compositions. Enriched by expressive harmonies and rhythm variability, Erdenebaatar's memorable melodies serve as a framework for her formidable band to stretch out. The quartet consists of a German cadre of fellow players from her university cohort, all now award-winning rising stars and bandleaders in their own right. Bassist Nils Kugelmann, whom Southern Germany's leading daily paper The Süddeutsche Zeitung named “one of the best in his field”, is a rhythmically and melodically outstanding all-rounder. Drummer Valentin Renner is one of Germany's busiest jazz drummers, currently the backbone of several notable jazz ensembles in the country. Finally, the creative and highly virtuosic  Anton Mangold rounds out the ensemble on saxophones and flutes. The quartet's charismatic interplay is a highlight of the album. "It helped me a lot to know everyone well. I already had in mind who was playing each part when I was composing,” Erdenebaatar shares.  If you enjoyed this episode please make sure to subscribe, follow, rate, and/or review this podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google Podcast, ect. Mance Lipscomb, Lightnin' Hopkins, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Big Mama Thornton, Clifton Chenier, Rose Maddox, Flaco Jimenez… the list is long and mighty. Chris Strachwitz was a keeper. His vault is jam-packed with 78s, 33s, 45s, reel-to-reels, cassettes, videos, photographs — an archive of all manner of recordings. And an avalanche of lifetime achievement awards — from the Grammy's, The Blues Hall of Fame, The National Endowment for the Arts – for some 60 years of recording and preserving the musical cultural heritage of this nation through his label, Arhoolie Records. This month, I had the opportunity to take part in the Detroit Free Press International Marathon weekend with several of my close DC friends. One of said friends was Savannah Beck, someone I met in 2019 in circumstances completely unrelated to running or any sort of movement. Over the course of our friendship, running entered the picture at some point. At a later point, we plotted this trip to Detroit with pals. Then Savannah trained and completed her first half marathon, crossing the Canadian border along the way.Savannah is endlessly creative, kind, and fun. She works as an editor at the Goethe Institute where she's written on a host of topics, including DC's large rat population. She hosts her own podcast on books called Slow Burn. And like many of the guests on this niche podcast, she runs! Savannah started running in school for one of the ball sports - we discuss why gym class running kind of stunk. After college, she began running 5Ks and worked her way up to an 8K. Now she's conquered the 13.1 mile distance and the sky is the limit! We also talk about training for the first half; going from hating gym running to loving Saturday morning runs; finding run groups are not as intimidating as expected; how the cat Fizz views Savannah's running; and more. Thanks so much to Savannah for chatting and to Dan Hoffman for the soundtrack. And shout out to Detroit - the marathon + half marathon weekend was amazing, and I want to talk about it endlessly.

There is no shortage of recent articles regarding the too long overlooked subject of female directors. While many of these articles are specific to the women directing films today (Patty Jenkins, Kelly Reichardt, Kathryn Bigelow, etc.), there are many more that claim to be comprehensive overviews of the contributions made by women to the art of cinema. These articles are careful to remember female directors from the distant past (Lotte Reiniger, Alice Guy-Blaché) and the ones who boldly made films in Hollywood when women weren't even considered for jobs as directors (Dorothy Arzner, Ida Lupino, Barbara Loden). They are careful to include women of color (Gina Prince-Bythewood, Chloé Zhao), and they don't forget the well-known foreign women directors (Lina Wertmüller, Agnès Varda, Chantal Akerman). But there's one group of female directors who haven't been given due credit for their work: The female directors of East Germany. You can go through as many articles on the topic of female directors as you're willing to read, and you won't find Iris Gusner, Evelyn Schmidt, or Hannelore Unterberg mentioned at all. Never mind that the films by these women are often better than any of the films made by some of the directors that did make those lists. Even the list of female directors Wikipedia includes no female East German directors. Join us today as we speak with Jim Morton, author of the East German Cinema Blog, and Jeffrey Babcock, who curated a program on East German cinema for the Goethe Institute in Amsterdam, on the often overlooked topic of female directors in DEFA films.  Our ability to bring you stories from behind the Berlin Wall is dependent on monthly donors like you.
