Demystifying Mental Toughness
177 How to Help Young People Develop a “Can Do” Attitude

Demystifying Mental Toughness

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 7, 2023 36:23

In episode #177 of the Demystifying Mental Toughness Podcast, Lisa Avery, a positive psychology practitioner talks to me about how to help young people flourish using a positive psychology approach.  In our conversation we focus on a measure of mental toughness, life control, which links to having a “can do” attitude towards life.  We discuss identifying and cultivating positive emotions, character strengths, and virtues that contribute towards a feel good factor and overcoming our negativity bias as well as a lot more. Key Learning Points: Arguably, here in the UK we are behind countries like the USA and Australia in our use of positive psychology approaches when supporting young people. We all have a negativity bias in our brains where we are quick to notice the bad stuff not the good. In order to get to the point of being comfortable in your own skin, and valuing yourself and your personality traits, you've got to know who you are. In schools and colleges the starting point is always to work with the staff, usually the senior leadership team. Dr. Susan David speaks about the fact that if you know what your values are, every time you need to make a decision.  You should simply ask yourself, “is what I'm about to say or do going to take me closer or further away from where I want to be?”. The central framework to positive psychology comes from Dr Martin Seligman's work. He says that in order to thrive, human beings need positive emotions, a sense of engagement in their work and life, great relationships, a sense of meaning or purpose, and a sense of accomplishment. Abraham Maslow states “we either step forwards into growth or step back backwards into safety.” Do you focus on the strengths of your kids or their weaknesses? Dr. Avery talks about the affects of leaving your kiddo in diapers for too long (the skin barrier breaks down), wanting to be a doctor since she was in elementary school and how she's had to learn to speak up during COVID. In her own words, a bit more about Lisa: I grew up in Kansas City and graduated from Oak Park High school. I attended Saint Louis University for my undergraduate education but returned to Kansas City for medical school at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. I completed pediatric residency at Children's Mercy Hospital. I continued to work at Children's Mercy until 2014, and then I transitioned to outpatient pediatric medicine. I have been with Priority Care Pediatrics for six years. I alternate my time as a newborn hospitalist at three Northland hospitals and seeing patients in the office. With my job, I have the opportunity to meet many families for the first time at birth and guide them through the first hours and days of parenthood. It is an honor to use my education and experience to help kids and families navigate through illness, to ensuring that well children stay healthy, my goal is comprehensive, complete medical care. In addition to the book knowledge and clinical experience that my training has provided me, my two children Emma and Grant have made me an infinitely better pediatrician with the joy, frustrations, and worries that embody parenthood. My husband Jon is an amazing father who has made me a better doctor as well through his love, support, and his own parenting techniques. When I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family, wrangling our two dogs on walks, and snuggling with our two cats. I also have the honor of serving on the Board of HappyBottoms. It's amazing that  "Life Passion and Business" the podcast has reached 40 episodes. WOW! For something that was born without a plan, this is an achievement. There needs to be some recognition but what do you do? I will come back to that in a moment.  let's explore something unrelated but relevant to one of my passions, food and  Autumn abundance  I Enjoy Free Wild Food My running has given me an awareness of the changing seasons and with that the locations of productive trees and plants all over the town. Last weekend saw me collecting a range of fungi. If you are tempted, get advice and take care. It is worth the trouble, Ceps ( Pic), and Boletus make for good eating. The last few weeks have seen the abundance of fruit trees mainly apples and pears. It was no surprise to read that the commercial UK apple harvest has topped 160,000 tonnes. I suspect if we add in domestic gardens that hot summer has produced over 500,000 tonnes of Fruit in the UK. While running, I have been watching the fruit on the trees ripen.  As we moved into Autumn, that fruit has been dropping and much of it is just left to rot.  So it goes without saying; we are appreciating and enjoying the bounty. Photos on the Facebook page.  So if you have friends with apple trees, offer to take some off their hands they will be grateful.  My wild food adventures are not on the podcast, but I thought to share it as another one of those passions.  Back to the 40th Episode of Life Passion and Business  How do you recognise the 40th episode? It's not quite the milestone of 50, but it it is a line in the sand. My mother used to say. "Life begins at 40." But I actually think life begins at 50, but then I'm 50 plus so I would say that. On thinking about how to celebrate I knew I did not want to do a usual interview. Then I had the idea of allowing myself to be interviewed. Scary. I have shared much of my life on the show and spoken about many things, but I've never actually talked about my life in depth for the programme. I had a chat with Lisa Avery, and she was keen to turn the table. Lisa Avery  In case you have forgotten Lisa was an early podcast guest and is now a collaborator for an online programme. It is a work in progress, and we will be telling you more about it soon. The recording was on zoom so that Lisa wave at me to stop me ranting and it all went well. I could tell that Lisa was delighted to put me on the spot and to be honest, I enjoyed the attention.  We covered my story of the podcast, and some of my experiences leading up to its creation, like many of my shows is an opportunity to explore the journey of another human being. This time it was me. The experience has opened my thinking around the structure of the show. We will see where that takes us.   So here it is episode 40 of   life Passion and Business

The podcast today is different I thought to test the radio format and put together segments to create a show. I have to say it is more difficult than it looks. It has given me a new appreciation for radio producer. So join me on my outside broadcast during an early morning walk. The topic today is the connection between excitement and passion, first, you will have my experience of both and then we explore the conversation with Lisa Avery. Also during the programme, there is early notice for a 5-day challenge created by Lisa using the tools of positive physiology. The challenge will take you from your current state and vision and show the potential of a new vision for yourself. It is a journey and you can find out more about it in the podcast. If you want to skip forward you will find it at 9 minutes. The problem with being outside is you have to speak to people when they pass and there are distractions, It was early in the morning when I decided to make this recording. Walking by a small burn the sun was filtering through the trees and in the field opposite were horses. It was an amazing little scene that took my breath away and was photo worthy. As I said being outside is distracting taking the photo took my mind off the conversation and how to use the voice recorder... Next week I'm returning to the interview format and they'll be a guest interview with someone who is very much involved in the exploration of people's passion, that I should be available next Tuesday As for future interviews were lining up with some interesting people. I would like to have a more feminine perspective on the podcast. So far I have noticed that it's the bold American men that step forward. "yeah I'll be on your show". The women and are less assertive, hopefully, I will change that in the next few weeks and we'll get some ladies to tell us their side of the story. That's it for now. I hope you enjoy the show and I will catch you soon. If you would like to know more about the five-day challenge that is coming up please put your details in the box below and we will let you know as soon as it becomes available.

On this podcast, we are looking at the difference between work and vocation. So when you hear the word "vocation" what does it mean to you? For me, it brings up images of nurses doctors, police officers or firefighters. These are the roles that are considered beneficial to society and more than a job. Looking at the word in the dictionary, and we find the following. A strong feeling of suitability for a particular career or occupation, a person's employment or main occupation. It can also be described as.  Vocation work or an activity regarded as worthy and requiring dedication, a trade or profession. It is all about the meaning we give to our work or pastimes. In this programme, we will look at vocation, and how finding yours will impact on your life. It doesn't necessarily mean the work that you do. However, we spend so much time working it would be good to find a role that feeds us Vocation could just as easily be a hobby or volunteering in your community something that you enjoy outside of the work environment. It is time to explore

It is part of a series of programmes and a Facebook group where together we will be exploring our journey, providing tools and support for you to do the same. Lisa Avery She is a positive psychologist. My conversation with Lisa was an inspiration, as she walks her talk and is clearly passionate about her life and work. But our conversation was more than that, as we explore some of the science behind finding meaning. Lisa is head of UK operations for Growing with Gratitude an international organisation dedicated to the empowerment of young people through positive psychology. It is about helping them uncover previously hidden strengths and tap into deep reserves of resilience. She also works in the corporate worlds using positive psychology to bring about change. It is the story of someone who followed their skills for languages and teaching and discovered a passion. That discovery changed their life direction. In the programme, Lisa explains the difference between Eudaimonic and Hedonic Happiness. And we look at the practical steps you can take to find your own journey. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Lisa Avery

Business Coaching with Join Up Dots

Being Happy Is So Important, And Todays Guest Is An Expert In Happiness And How To Achieve it My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a lady who is someone that should be on the show every single day. If i could pull her away from the sunshine of her home in Spain, and the endless supply of Sangria that is, as she is the Join Up Dots pinup. A lady who believes 100% percent, that if you are living your purpose, doing a job that you love, then many if not all of your problems, health, mental and financial will be a thing of the past. Which as you will see everyday on Join Up Dots is a message that I support wholeheartedly on every episode. She is a positive psychologist, coach and writer, who helps individuals connect with the unique passion and purpose that drives their personal and professional success. As she says "I am fascinated by what propels a person to pursue their vocation, entwining their innate strengths, values and interests to serve both themselves and the rest of the world. I fuse the art of Coaching with the science of Positive Psychology to help individuals gain the clarity, confidence and courage to become all they aspire to be. I also undertake a variety a written projects on the subjects of positive psychology, personal development and coaching. Creative writing has always been a passion of mine, so producing written content on the above mentioned topics is the surest way I evoke a sense of 'flow'." So coming out of the University of East London, with a Master's degree in applied Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology it would seem that this passion for helping others find their swing was always going to be on the cards. But as we see on Join Up Dots, this is more often than not never the case. So did she know that she would end up living in Barcelona, whilst casting a network across the world to help the world smile and love their lives? And where do people go wrong? Not stopping to ask "Why do i feel like a it rubbish?" or simply not stopping at all. Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Lisa Avery   Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty topics with Lisa Avery such as: Lisa shares how we should be able to accept our moods and emotional states when they happen without ever suppressing them. Let the energies run free. We discuss how  the majority of companies wont allow their workers to be creative with their strengths and intricacies. Why can't we be unique and bring talents never seen before?       How we should all experiment with trying to strip away the layers that we wrap ourselves in, to find the diamond that is at our core. That gem holds the clues to the rest of our lives. and lastly…. Why people have to realise that happiness cant last forever. We need to find ways of making the first stage of happiness truly deep and fulfilling, and that normally relates to helping others.
