Balancing Life's Priorities: A Journey to Fulfillment

Have you ever paused to think about the areas of your life that might be slipping through the cracks? It's a common journey we all go through as we navigate this world, reprioritising and adjusting as things evolve.   In the sphere of life coaching, it's often emphasised that we need to pay attention to various parts of our lives to truly thrive. From finances and relationships to health, joy, and family, each aspect contributes to crafting a well-rounded existence.      Let's face it, it's all too easy to become hyper-focused on one area, sacrificing others along the way. Decisions about what we prioritise sculpt our life journey and outcomes. But how do we achieve balance, ensuring no part of our life is left neglected? That's the personal expedition each of us must embark on, deciding where to channel our life force and energy, understanding fully that every component impacts our future success and happiness. One insightful analogy, inspired by Stephen Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Successful People, is about "sharpening the saw." It's about maintaining readiness and support networks, so we're prepared for any situation, much like keeping a saw sharp to effectively cut wood. This rings especially true for workaholics who might overlook personal relationships, only realising their importance later on when those connections have faded. Today, I'm highlighting the importance of conducting a personal review of all aspects of life. Are your relationships flourishing, is your career on track, and are your finances aligned with your professional missions? Without regular introspection and attention, change won't come. And remember, "energy flows where attention goes." Neglect breeds stagnation, while attention fosters growth. Interestingly, I've observed how crucial it is to reignite our sense of play and fun, an element sometimes forgotten in adulthood. Watching children, their capacity for joy is infectious, reminding us that fun isn't just for kids. Regularly revisiting and enhancing this aspect can add a joyful spark to daily life—ask yourself daily: "Where did I have fun today, and how can I create more of it tomorrow?" When it comes to more structured areas, such as finances or relationships, thoughtful planning is required, but each can improve significantly with dedicated focus. So, here's my simple suggestion today: take a moment to assess where you stand across life's many dimensions. If you identify areas that need improvement, provide them with the necessary attention and time to flourish. And if you need any help with that, you know who to call. Always be well on the journey.      Life Passion & Business Podcast is about finding answers to life's big questions through weekly interviews with guest speakers. The Power of Celebration: Why Acknowledgement Fuels Success

Have you ever stopped to really celebrate your achievements and reflect on what recognition truly means? In this podcast, we're diving into the crucial role of acknowledgement and celebration in our lives. You know, all too often, we hit a goal or reach a milestone but then just move on without soaking in the joy of what we've accomplished. Last weekend, I got to experience a truly inspiring event—a degree show at Abertay University. It was beautiful to watch students, including my own son, share their journey with family, friends, and industry insiders. The evening show was all about creative awards in fields like development, design, art, game art, and coding. It really hit me then, how rare those opportunities are to be publicly celebrated for our achievements. Our modern lives seem to lack those moments of appreciation, yet historically, festivals and celebrations have always brought communities together. Today, in our fast-paced world, we often miss out on true efforts to celebrate and recognize not just big milestones like weddings or birthdays but also little victories. The competitive business world often tries to mimic this with award events. However, these can sometimes feel like 'bought' recognitions rather than genuine celebrations. Yet, whatever the method, there's a shared joy in acknowledging success, one that's missing in many of our endeavours today, where the work seems endless and without tangible endpoints. So, what's the solution? We need to find ways to bring celebrations into our everyday lives, to break the routine and appreciate the journey. This is more than just about public adoration—it's about feeling good internally when we acknowledge ourselves and others. Why not try a little experiment? Pick a task, maybe cleaning out that cluttered drawer or tidying up your wardrobe. Once done, take a step back, appreciate the difference, and relish that sense of achievement. It'll empower you more than you might expect! Every little acknowledgement can be a powerful motivation booster, driving us to pursue even bigger goals. The creative industries know this; that's why they so elegantly celebrate success to propel people forward to achieve even greater heights. So let's tap into this powerful resource by valuing achievements more. Remember, this isn't just about work or big life events. It's about appreciating every stride we make on our life's journey. So, go ahead, try recognizing something you've achieved today, and see how uplifting it feels. If this chat has resonated with you, share it with a friend and spread the positivity. They are the building blocks of society.  Join us on this journey as we delve deep into the realms of belief and faith, those invisible forces that shape our world and influence our actions. Unlocking the Power of Rituals for a Meaningful Life

Habits or Ritual? Have you ever wondered how much of your life is built on habits versus rituals, or vice versa? Well, you're in the right place! In this episode, I'm diving deep into the fascinating world of rituals and habits and how they play a role in our everyday lives. Do you remember Easter egg hunts as a kid? Even if Easter isn't your holiday, indulging in chocolate eggs is a shared ritual many of us cherish. It's these little traditions that give our lives a sprinkle of meaning. But why are rituals so crucial to us, and how can we harness their power to craft a better life? From ancient fertility rites to modern-day birthdays and weddings, rituals have always been about connecting people and creating memorable moments. They aren't just habits we mindlessly check off our to-do lists; they're meaningful ceremonies imbued with significance and emotion. Consider a wedding, filled with flowers, vows, and toasts or a birthday bash with cake and candles. These moments are ritualised to create depth and connection, contrasting with the simple habit of brushing your teeth or hitting snooze. In this lively chat, we explore the power of rituals, not as random acts, but as essential tools that get us through challenging times. Whether it's athletes getting in the zone with pre-game rituals or creating peace through meditation, these moments hold incredible power. Wondering how to embrace rituals in your life? Start by looking at your daily routines. What's a habit, and what can become a ritual with the right intention? How about adding a smile to your reflection every time you look in a mirror?   If this resonates, share it with a friend or leave us a review. Let's explore the beauty of rituals together and see how they can transform our lives. Thanks for joining me, and until next time, take care! This is a great topic of conversation to explore further. Some of the references I use include Michael Norton, a professor at Harvard Business School, and his book, The Ritual Effect.  I have not read it, but I have watched some of his videos on YouTube and he has guested on a few podcasts. How does love fit into your life? Are you aware of your love or being loved? Love is fundamental to human existence; expressing love and feeling loved are key to a healthy and productive life. In reality, love is essential but is often forgotten. This episode explores how one small word—love—encompasses a vast spectrum of human experiences. While English limits us to a single term, ancient Greeks and Romans recognized nine distinct types of love that shape our relationships, creativity, and sense of self. Join us as we unpack these nine "colors" of love: from passionate Eros to playful Ludus, from the selfless Agape to the practical Pragma. Learn how these different expressions of love influence your daily life, your relationships, and your personal development. Through a simple yet powerful exercise called "The Love List," you'll discover which types of love dominate your life and which might be missing. This exploration isn't just theoretical—it's a pathway to deeper self-understanding and more meaningful connections with others. Whether you're reflecting on romantic relationships, family bonds, creative pursuits, or your relationship with yourself, this episode offers a framework to understand and express love in all its beautiful complexity. Hey there! Ever wondered how love fits into the grand scheme of your life? Join me, Paul Harvey, your midlife coach, in this bite-sized episode of the Life Passion and Business Shortcast where we dive into the essence of love. We all know love is fundamental to human existence, right? Yet, we often brush past it in our daily grind without giving it the spotlight it deserves. In this engaging episode, I explore how we can weave love into every aspect of our lives, from trivial things like our favorite foods to deeper connections we share with our families and friends. I invite you to make a 'love list'—an enlightening exercise that helps you map out the different kinds of love you experience. Have you ever thought about how your love for pizza differs from the love you feel for your partner? Or how does time spent with an old school friend evoke philia love? Together, we uncover the different faces of love as viewed through the lens of ancient Greek and Latin words—like Eros for passionate love, Philia for deep friendship, and Agape for unconditional love. It's all about recognizing these varying degrees in the everyday actions and relationships that fill our lives with meaning. We also tackle the importance of self-love, Philautia, emphasizing how acknowledging and embracing who we are can empower us to climb higher and weather the storms of life. This exploration isn't just about understanding; it's also about feeling and expressing love, which, as you'll see, is a true game-changer in your personal development journey. So, whether you wish to find more passion, build deeper relationships, or simply understand yourself better, this episode might just be the nudge you need. Don't forget to share it with a friend or leave a comment—let's spread the love and remind everyone that love truly is the better option! When you have completed your love list, mark it up as directed. Here are the different forms of love to remind you. Eros: Romantic Love, the Greek god of love, the Cupid cherub Philia: Affectionate love. This is the love between friends Agape: Unconditional; it is the love of sacrifice. Storge: Family love; it is how we feel about our parents and children Mania: Fixation and obsession are also forms of love. Ludus:  Play Pragma:  Pracicality. Meraki:  The Art of Creation. Philautia:  Self Love. Where does trust sit in your life? Who do you trust, friends, family or your spouse? Do you trust yourself?   Do you know that trust is the foundation of everything? It's the secret sauce to success, the kind of thing that holds your world together even when things get tough. Have you ever stopped to think about where trust sits in your life? Remember that gutting feeling when your trust was broken or those moments of triumph when trusting yourself led to unexpected victories? We've all been there. Personally.  In today's episode, we dive deep into this invisible force that quietly shapes every relationship. Trust. It's the foundation of everything meaningful. From the early days of human history, as detailed in the book 'Sapiens' by Yuval Noah Harari, sharing stories built trust among strangers, leading to trade, alliances, and genetic diversity. Our modern society—our cities, economies, and institutions—all rest on these principles of shared trust. Think about it. Even if you're in a completely different field, trust is your anchor. In marketing, for example, it's all about establishing trust with prospects and customers. That old mantra, "know, like, and trust" is still crucial today. And just look at companies that lose trust—they feel it where it hurts most: the bottom line. But trust goes beyond just economics. It's deeply personal. It's the bedrock of our relationships and emotional well-being. When trust is broken by those closest to us, it can feel like our world is falling apart. But here's the big question: How much do you trust yourself? This is where self-trust kicks in as the cornerstone of our confidence and resilience. In this episode, you'll discover practical ways to strengthen your self-trust, hear real stories of trust built and broken, and learn why your ability to trust wisely might be your most valuable asset in today's rapidly changing world   So, what small steps can you take today to nurture that self-trust? The Compassion Crisis: Are we running out of kindness?

Today, we're diving into something I've been observing with growing concern—what I can only describe as a compassion crisis in our world. Have you noticed it, too? Is that increasing harshness in our media, our politics, and our everyday interactions? That subtle shift where showing toughness is valued over showing kindness? Where vulnerability is seen not as courage but as a weakness to be exploited? Last week, we explored how negative news travels faster than positive stories, creating a distorted view of reality. But today's topic goes deeper—beyond perception to a genuine shift in how we treat one another and ourselves. While researching this episode, I came across a fascinating historical example from ancient Rome demonstrating how radical compassion once changed the course of an entire civilisation. I'll share that story with you today, along with its powerful implications for our current moment. But this isn't just about society at large—it's about us, about you and me. How does living in a world that increasingly devalues compassion affect how we see ourselves? How we treat ourselves? In my coaching practice, I've witnessed the transformative power of self-compassion. I've seen how replacing that harsh inner critic with a supportive inner ally can create sustainable change that fear-based motivation never could. Today, we'll explore why compassion—both for others and for ourselves—might be the most revolutionary act in a culture that prizes toughness above all else. We'll discuss practical ways to cultivate self-compassion and how these personal practices can ripple outward to create meaningful change. So settle in, take a deep breath, and let's explore together how rekindling compassion might be exactly what we need in these challenging times.   Here is the historical link as mentioned  https://www.biblicalarchaeology.org/daily/ancient-cultures/daily-life-and-practice/the-antonine-plague-and-the-spread-of-christianity/   For more information, check out the links below, and if you found this useful, consider buying me a coffee below.   Remember if you found this shortcast helpful, please share it with a friend.          Life Passion & Business Podcast is about finding answers to life's big questions through weekly interviews with guest speakers. Hey there, it's your midlife coach, Paul Harvey. In today's shortcast, we're taking a closer look at how the stories we tell ourselves shape our lives.  How do you stay in touch with the world events? In these turbulent times, the news and social channels are often more doom and gloom than sunshine and rainbows. And while staying informed is crucial, drowning in negativity doesn't do us any favours. So, how do you stay resilient and reclaim your personal story in a world that seems to profit from keeping you anxious? We're diving deep into why the modern media is more about capturing your attention than reflecting reality. It thrives on fear, outrage, and conflict, turning minor issues into headline news while world peace gets overlooked. The solution is balance; we're not saying to bury your head in the sand. Instead, let's find that sweet spot between being informed and being overwhelmed. Humans are story machines built from what we have heard or experienced. So, that story you believe and tell yourself becomes who you are and where you're headed. A strong narrative can help you see challenges as growth opportunities and recognise that you're the protagonist of your own life, not just a spectator of global events. But beware! When negative news overloads start infiltrating your personal story, they bring narratives of helplessness and powerlessness. We're discussing those "why bother?" thoughts that lead to inaction. So, let's chat about how to spot if these negative media narratives are seeping into your life and what to do about it. We'll cover practical steps to maintain a resilient personal narrative. Be intentional about your media consumption, strengthen your story, and find your community. Whether it's creating art, helping someone, or being more present, there are many ways to fuel a positive outlook. Your story is too precious to be written by algorithms focusing on fear. So, as we wrap up, remember you have the power to craft a narrative that connects, empowers, and inspires.   Remember if you found this shortcast helpful, please share it with a friend.          Life Passion & Business Podcast is about finding answers to life's big questions through weekly interviews with guest speakers. Wendy Alexander: The $50k Career Launch

My guest on the show is an international career coach, but her journey was from a place of no option. Her father's words were the inspiration, “you can be the victim or be victorious.”  She did and launched herself into a job search that led to a $50k salary increase. The show you are about to hear was recorded today; I thought the content is so reliant as we touched on the subjects from the weekend podcast that I had to get to get it out now.  I am talking about blame culture and identity politics, a topic we are all too familiar with.    Wendy Alexander grew up in South Africa to mixed-race parents and was defined as coloured, which meant her life and opportunities were restricted because of the colour of their skin. Her father was a fantastic role model, he taught the children how to survive in the system. However, he and his wife bravely moved the family from South Africa to Australia. That meant starting again from the bottom; this was 1987, and apartheid South Africa restricted what you could take out of the country.  The family arriving in Australia just a month before her 21st birthday meant lots of adjustment to life and new freedoms. Fast forward a few years, Wendy was in relationship and had a home she was buying with her partner, and life was good. Until it wasn't, when the relationship broke, and she found herself 4 months pregnant, with no home and lots of debt.     She had to find a solution to generate an income that would support her and this unborn child and service the debt. It was the experience of her upbringing and the example set by her parents that gave her the tenacity to change. In this conversation, you will hear how she set about finding a role that could change her circumstances.  The process she developed put her on the path to a successful corporate career,  a role with 50K more than previous.  She used her process many times in different career sectors.  Those career development skills did not go unnoticed; she began career coaching as a side interest. That is a good lesson for all of us, we all have experiences that is are transferable skills and people will pay for that guidance.   In 2018, after years in the corporate world and battling the health challenges of diabetes and menopause, she stepped out of the business world to become a full-time career coach. She runs her business on her terms, guiding professional individuals, especially midlife and menopausal women, to the careers they've longed for.    Wendy told me before the show that she is a reluctant speaker, but I did not notice she has a fascinating story and tells it well. A quick apology: the audio on my end suffered a bit on this recording. That aside, tune in and explore the practical tips Wendy shares on refining resumes, harnessing transferable skills, and effectively navigating the modern job market, If you like what you heard,  Wendy is an international coach, so do check out the links below.     The full social links are all available at: https://lifepassionandbusiness.com/wendy-alexander-the-50k-career-launch   Life Passion & Business is dedicated to exploring what it takes to be Extraordinary, to face challenges and rejoice in the opportunities they bring, and to expand our vision into new ways of thinking and living. Have you ever felt weighed down by the blame game, whether from the news headlines or those everyday personal interactions? In this episode of Life, Passion, and Business, I'm diving into this very topic, challenging us to rethink how we perceive blame, responsibility, and, ultimately, our own potential for growth. You know how the world feels pretty chaotic these days, with politics seeming like a never-ending blame fest? It's not just about pointing fingers; it's become a clever tool for evading responsibility. But that's not where the story ends—in fact, it's just the beginning. I'm inviting you to take a more personal turn. Think about the stories you tell yourself and how they could be shaped by the culture of blame around us. Could there be a more empowered narrative waiting for you? By stepping back and considering our own roles in life's mishaps, we open the door to personal growth and stronger relationships. Let's chat about it: Do you find yourself sometimes on the defensive, quick to point out not my fault? Guess what—you're not alone, but understanding why we do this can lead us to a more compassionate and connected life. Join me as we unravel the nuances of blame from the playground to politics and explore how a shift in perspective not only unburdens us but also enhances creativity and trust. Together, we can step away from blaming and towards understanding, healing, and creating a life of passion and purpose. And before you go, if this hits home or you know someone who might benefit from our chat, please share this episode with them. Let's spread the positivity, my friend!

Striking the Balance: Consumption vs Creation in Modern Life

Lets talk is all about figuring out where you stand between consuming and creating in your life. On this show, we touch on how easy it is to slip into the endless consumption loop—be it binge-watching series, doom scrolling on your phone, or even consuming educational content without applying it. It's a common trap and one I've fallen into myself. But here's the thing: while consumption can often offer a much-needed release, especially in a stressful world, it shouldn't overshadow our creative endeavours. Whether it's building a business, crafting a piece of art, or even tidying up your space, creativity is what propels us forward in life. It's about making sure there's more creation in our days than mere consumption. I mean, wouldn't you agree that we often feel more fulfilled and in control after creating something, no matter how small? The conversation zeroes in on this balance and challenges us to reflect on how we're spending our time. So, my challenge for you today is to assess your own consumption-creation balance. If it's off-kilter, consider what you could shift to bring more creative actions into your life.  If you found this episode helpful, why not share it with a friend? Crafting Your Perfect Day: Beyond Duvets and Books

How do you measure your day? What does it take to craft the perfect day? Think about it—what makes a day perfect? Is it money, satisfaction, or the precious time well-spent? Perhaps it's something else entirely! I'm Paul Harvey, a midlife coach, and my opinion has long been that our stories shape everything we do, feel, or experience. Let's explore how our daily rituals and little surprises can bring us closer to those perfect moments. Let's admit it, we all have those 'blah' days where nothing seems right. But have you ever sat down to actually define what a perfect day looks like for you? For some, it's lounging in bed with a book; for others, it's a cozy café with a pot of Earl Grey. Let's question if that image holds true every single day. What if perfection isn't an everyday occurrence but an extraordinary happenstance? I've had chats with people who often realize in hindsight that a surprise or unexpected twist made their day perfect—an uplifting conversation, a random act of kindness, or just sipping a fabulous coffee paired with something sweet. We can't engineer surprises, but we can craft habits and create space for those little joys to make a day special. Morning rituals, like stretching or enjoying a leisurely coffee, set the tone. You know your perfect ingredients—a bit of workout, family time, progressing on a fun project, sound familiar? Take the time each morning to figure out what you wish to accomplish. Planning gives room for those desired elements to flourish, bringing a sense of fulfilment by day's end. Ultimately, perfect days are about capturing moments of gratitude. Reviewing the successful parts of your day and feeling thankful magnifies life's joys. It's all about valuing what you have and how you spend your time. So here's a little nudge—how do you measure your day, and why not allow a hint of perfection to bloom each day? Share these thoughts with a friend, and let's keep this uplifting conversation going! Thank you for tuning in, and here's to savouring our days with more purpose and joy. Maybe it's the political upheaval as a new President steps into the White House tomorrow, promising shifts that have left many of us holding our breath. But beyond the headlines and politics, change is an inevitable part of our personal lives, too. Whether it's a child's rapid growth, career shifts, or even the unexpected losses we endure, change knocks on our door almost daily, challenging our desire for stability. Together, let's explore how we can build resilience to cope and thrive amidst this ever-changing landscape. I'll share personal anecdotes, like my journey with my son's growth, which taught me to embrace the beauty of life's constant evolution. It's a reminder that even as life throws us curveballs, there's always something valuable to learn and adapt to. In this episode, I also touch on the daunting task of dealing with change in conflict zones—an area beyond my coaching expertise, yet one that demands empathy and courage. Unleashing the Power of Appreciation in Our Lives

Hello, my dear friend! Have you ever paused to think about the remarkable impact that appreciation can have on our lives? Like my experience this week, attending two community meetings highlighted this very point. The first was a vision and planning meeting by a new board looking to bring a fresh opportunity. However, it became tense and confrontational as some members were more interested in tearing plans apart than building new paths for the future, driven perhaps by a fear of change. At the second gathering, the managing team made amends for errors, acknowledging their missteps.  In both cases, it was not the challenge that was the problem it was the delivery. It made me wonder why criticising is often easier than appreciating. Appreciation is a powerful tool. It's that warm smile and acknowledgement that can turn tension into teamwork. In the world of public speaking, like Toastmasters, appreciation is the tool used to deliver feedback. It follows the 'commend, recommend, commend' approach – perfecting the art of giving constructive feedback while uplifting spirits. Yet, the greatest appreciation we can offer is to ourselves. Looking in the mirror and valuing who we are is transformative. It's a journey of self-recognition. As human beings, children or adults, we thrive on acknowledgement and respect. And when we feel valued, we rise. So, let's take a moment, shall we? Appreciate yourself today. Share gratitude, and watch your world blossom. Join me next time when Jane Duncan Rogers will join me in a special podcast about our journey exploring the 'My Millionaire Mindset.' Until then, spread some love and appreciation. You deserve it. The conversation was about everything I dislike about the marketing industry. It is an industry where money is more important than morals or outcomes and consequences. It reminded me of a refreshing marketing conversation I had with Sarah Santacroce some three years back. In my opinion, all marketing must be based on integrity and the desire for what is right, not just what makes money. Sarah has been on a simular journey and devised her solution. Gentle Marketing.    The Cleaning Up Podcast https://www.podbean.com/media/share/dir-vk5vy-22508372 -----------------------------------------------------------------  When I first spoke to Sarah Santacroce, she introduced herself as the Hippie turned Business Coach, which gave me visions of VW Beetles and flowers, so I was instantly hooked and intrigued to learn more. As you will hear, Sarah has a lovely European Accent with a twist of California that is charming to listen to.  She is part of a growing tide of marketing professionals (myself and several other guests included) who are questioning the dubious path that sales and marketing has taken over the last 20 years. Recognizing that it was not healthy to squeeze herself into a model that doesn't fit her values and personality, Sarah has created a new niche for herself with her business marketing approach and is here to share her story with us. Today we're diving into something we all need a little more of in our lives—authentic pride. You know, that warm feeling when you achieve something meaningful, not just for the accolades, but for the personal satisfaction it brings. It's all about exploring what makes us tick and feel alive! In this episode, I reflect on a recent experience marshalling at a local 10k race. Watching those runners push through their challenges, whether sprinting to the finish or walking with determination, got me thinking about why we put ourselves out there. What magic ingredient makes us feel good about ourselves, even when things get tough? It's that sense of pride—feeling proud of our efforts and achievements, big or small. I've been reading a fascinating book by Dr. Jessica Tracy called "Pride: The Secrets of Success." It's an eye-opener on the different types of pride and how authentic pride can propel us to be our best selves. The book shares stories like that of Dean Karnazes, who rediscovered his passion for running at 30, transforming his life. It's about finding that 'thing' that makes you feel fulfilled and proud of who you are. So, what in your life gives you that feeling of accomplishment? Whether running, solving puzzles, or simply sticking to a daily ritual, what matters is how it makes you feel. It's not about boasting or comparing; it's about personal satisfaction. In this captivating episode, Paul Harvey sits down with Gavin Fernie-Jones, a man whose life journey from the urban streets of Essex to the picturesque landscapes of the French Alps is nothing short of transformative. Join us as we delve into Gavin's story, exploring his evolution from a reluctant child in the Peak District to a passionate advocate for sustainable living and community connection. Gavin's early life took an unexpected turn when his family moved to an isolated outdoor activity center in the Peak District. Initially resistant, Gavin soon found himself immersed in the beauty of nature, a shift that laid the foundation for his lifelong love of the outdoors. This connection to nature was further deepened during his college years, where he pursued art, and later, through his travels and experiences in the French Alps. Now settled in the French Alps, Gavin has spent over two decades integrating his passion for outdoor activities with a growing awareness of the environmental impact of consumerism. His journey took a pivotal turn when he launched an outdoor clothing business, revealing the staggering levels of waste in the industry. This realization sparked a personal journey, and he started a community project that emphasizes repair, reuse, and conscious consumption. Discover how Gavin's initiative, One Tree at a Time, has led to a community-driven revolution where 75% of outdoor clothing in his village is repaired and reused. Learn about the Reaction Collective, an international movement empowering local communities to make a difference while having fun. Gavin shares his insights on living a life in harmony with nature, free from the constraints of consumer culture and societal pressures. Towards the end of the episode, Gavin introduces us to Citizen Friday, a campaign encouraging individuals to share, repair, and get some fresh air as an alternative to the consumer frenzy of Black Friday. Listen in to find out how you can participate in this movement and make a meaningful impact in your own life. This episode is more than just a conversation; it's a call to action. Hello, this is your host Paul Harvey. Today, I want to take you back to January 2022 when I had a truly fascinating conversation with Di Manuel. Trust me, this episode is one for the books! We dive into the depths of change, the struggle with addiction, and dealing with complicated feelings. Di was in a dark place until one powerful question from his wife changed everything:  This question was pivotal for Di, leading him on a path of self-discovery and transformation. This episode explores the themes of fitness, family, faith, finances, and fun  However, the journey wasn't without its pitfalls. Di became known as "Fun Guy Di," always the life of the party but dependent on alcohol and drugs to maintain his extroverted persona. The turning point came when his wife, Christy, sat him down and asked that life-altering question. From that moment, Di committed to a year without drinking, seeking support through therapy and personal development. This decision led to a complete transformation, not just in his personal life but also in his professional endeavours. Today, Di is a TEDx speaker, an author, and the creator of Mentorship Mondays, a safe space for men to connect and support each other. His story is one of rebirth, travel, writing, and more. It's a testament to the power of change and the impact of asking the right questions.       Further details about this podcast along with Dai's website and social links are all available at: http://www.lifepassionandbusiness.com/dai-manuel-breaking-habits     Life Passion & Business is dedicated to exploring what it takes to be Extraordinary, to face challenges and rejoice in the opportunities they bring, and expand our vision into new ways of thinking and living. Following the Shortcast at the weekend, where we explored the power of Self-Talk, we touched on the issue of shame and guilt, which reminded me of my conversation with Lois Hollis, a woman in her 70s who achieved so much, yet that early trauma came back to haunt her.    It is a story of transcending the past and moving towards the future, and well worth a review.  This show was first aired in July 2022 Where are you in life with the big emotional bricks like shame and guilt? Do you reflect on past events or experience these feelings in current relationships? For most of us, this stuff is part of our makeup; we are unaware of it. Having listened to my guest on the show today, I became conscious of my shame and guilt for past actions and how I have used shame in my family interactions.  My guest on the show has always been a pioneer. Lois Hollis is in her late 70s, deeply connected to God and her faith, and driven by a calling that started in childhood. Her early years were tough. With physical abuse at home, she received multiple head and neck injuries. One of these occasions led to a near-death experience where she received her calling.  At church, she was preached into guilt and shame to find her sins; the teachers at school punished her for dyslexia. Her solace was tap dancing. She loved tap dancing, and she tells me it was tap dancing that pulled her through. It worked because she finished high school, applied to nursing school at the University of Pennsylvania, and received a scholarship. At college, Lois earned an RN and BSN nursing degree and went on to a job at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia. Her creative approach to problems was recognised, and she was invited to join a programme that went on to develop the first Kidney Hemorrhage Units in the USA in 1966. She became a pioneer of the kidney dialysis foundation, stayed in the programme for ten years, leaving it behind to have a family, and was blessed with three daughters.  Then life took a turn. Now in her 40s, she experienced headaches that became migraine that developed into a range of other life-threatening problems. It reached a point where she was told she would not live beyond her 50s.   Those childhood traumas and physical abuse had a price it was discovered there were broken bones in her neck and back. Our conversation concerns physical, mental, and spiritual recovery and a wonderfully inspiring journey.   Today Lois Hollis works with shame and guilt as an independent study. She is bringing new knowledge of these misunderstood conditions. She is a filmmaker, author of 3 books, a speaker and a coach.     Further details about this podcast along with my Guest's website and social links are all available at: https://www.lifepassionandbusiness.com/lois-hollis-beyond-shame     Life Passion & Business is dedicated to exploring what it takes to be Extraordinary, to face challenges and rejoice in the opportunities they bring, and expand our vision into new ways of thinking and living. Harnessing your self-talk. Have you ever thought about that little voice in your head? You know, the one that pops up most randomly, whether you're doing something you maybe shouldn't be or just indulging yourself. Well, guess what? Hey there! Welcome to another life, passion, and business shortcast with me, Paul Harvey, your friendly midlife coach. Over the years, I've had the pleasure of chatting with hundreds of folks, and one thing has become crystal clear: our stories shape our lives. Everything we do, feel, or experience is based on the narratives we create. Today, we're reflecting on mindfulness. Have you noticed how it's everywhere these days? But what does it actually mean, and is there any real value to it? Mindfulness has seeped into my life over the past five or six years, and I find it incredibly valuable. It's often linked with Buddhism, emphasizing awareness and being present. However, I recently listened to a podcast called "People I Mostly Admire" with Steve Levitt, where he spoke with Ellen Langer, a Harvard professor known as the mother of mindfulness. She's been working on this for about 40 years! Ellen's take on mindfulness is fascinating. Unlike the meditative practices from Buddhist traditions, her version is about being present in your daily life. It's about being mindful of the moment, which is the foundation of all my coaching. Our brains naturally tend to disengage to save energy, like when we tune out during a familiar drive to work. Ellen advocates for being more mindful of our actions, which makes us more alive. She conducted a groundbreaking experiment where elderly men lived as if it were 1959, and their health improved dramatically. It's worth checking out her work, especially her new book, "The Mindful Body: Thinking Our Way to Chronic Health." This concept of mindfulness resonates deeply with me, especially when I'm running. If I focus on my goal with confidence, I achieve it with ease. Doubt, however, makes everything harder. This principle applies to all areas of life. By seeing the world with fresh eyes, we keep ourselves young and vibrant. Ellen suggests noticing new things about people and places to keep our minds engaged and alive. Her insights remind us that being mindful opens up a world of possibilities. So this week, why not give mindfulness a try? See how it changes your perspective and brings the world to life. And if you want more inspiration, check out the podcast episode with Jeannie Blasberg. Her story is full of attention to detail and rich experiences. As always, thank you for joining me on this journey. Your comments and feedback mean the world to me. When I think about my guest on the show, I think of personal leadership, commitment, and making a difference. She inspires me on at least two, possibly three, counts because she is an athlete, a novelist, and a regenerative farmer. I recognise a fellow polymath. As an only child, Jeanne Blasberg spent a lot of time alone. Her parents gave her a lot of independence, and she credits this time with igniting her love for storytelling and nurturing her creativity. To this day, she can juggle and close up magic.    Heading college, she went for the humanities, with American Studies, so you would never have guessed she would end up on Wall Street as a baby banker. That means the grunt worker for the banking industry. It has served her well in writing, her work in nonprofits, and now, her work at the regenerative farm. Banking in the 1980s was volatile, so it was worth taking when a job opportunity came up in the same city as her husband's career move. Sinsinattie was a bit of a jump from New York, but her timing was good, as the bank that she left was taken over and effectively closed. The new job was a challenge, but opened opportunities.     After her first child, the family moved back to Boston. The skills she gained from that job led to writing case studies for Harvard Business School. Now a full-time Mum, she competed in athletics, Worked in non-profits, and held the Chair of US Squash. Somewhere in that list, she found the time to read and explore her creativity in writing groups, and the ideas for her first novel arrived.   That book was published in 2017 and called “Eden” and followed in 2019 by “The Nine” This is a lovely conversation with a woman who is a polymath. She can turn her attention to anything and make it happen. She is a deep thinker and has many tools for living a good life. We cover all of the usual questions, including why, when most people are looking to retire, she and her husband have effectively gone back to school to learn how to work the land. However, she is clearly passionate about wellness, the food system, and the healing aspect of nature because it inspires her writing. Just 18 months back, they bought a 420-acre regenerative farm in SW Wisconsin called Flynn Creek Farm.   In April this year, she released her third novel, DAUGHTER OF A PROMISE; she co-chairs the Boston Book Festival and serves on the Executive Committee of GrubStreet, a preeminent creative writing centre in Boston.  Of course, she is the CEO of Flynn Creek Farm.           Further details about this podcast along with my Guest's website and social links are all available at: https://lifepassionandbusiness.com/jeanne-blasberg-author-and-regenerative-farmer/     Life Passion & Business is dedicated to exploring what it takes to be Extraordinary, to face challenges and rejoice in the opportunities they bring, and expand our vision into new ways of thinking and living. I don't think it's a stretch to say that Tom Brown Jr leaves quite a 'wake' in his passing.  He's taught thousands of students, both through his books and Tracker School, and he's been a 'force of nature' in these past five decades.   He's been a mentor, a guide, a father figure to many whose fathers were absent, and he won't ever fully know the depth of his presence or impact had on those who leaned in to his teaching.    He was complicated, and a little wild.  Untamed, I guess I'd call it.  Kinda like the ocean, where you never turn your back on him if you could help it!  Not dangerous, but man, that piercing gaze that was like X-ray vision, peering into your soul.    It didn't happen often, but when he'd mention something he'd seen in my tracks, about my life or work, it would always be spot on.  Every time.    I took a lot of classes back in the 80's and 90's, and was an assistant instructor on many classes too, and he always had something new to teach, that I had never heard or seen before, so I knew he was just scratching the surface of his skills and abilities, even in the 'advanced classes'.    He didn't tolerate mind games, or time wasters or fools, and I learned a lot about boundaries, and inner strength and conviction from observing his teaching style over the years.   On the flip side, he was funny.  REALLY FUNNY, and he had that type of humor that was 'old school' but also not aimed at putting someone down in a mean, or harsh way.   When there were students who were more serious or sensitive, his gentle side would come out as well.  It was always a joy to see. This episode is about the impact he had on my life.   I trust he's tracking in the canyons of the Other Side, following Grandfather or one of his older instructors through the sage.  Journey well and good medicine to you, my friend. The week we step back a year and rediscover my conversation with Jon Rennie, he was a submariner on a nuclear submarine during the Cold War.  Our podcast is about the transition between services and civic street. However, it is also about the application of a leadership style.  Today, Jon Rennie runs a successful business that manufactures critical components for electrical utilities. He's also a podcast host and the author of three books on leadership. Jon was born to a family in Manchester, New Hampshire, just north of Boston. It is a blue-collar town, and people do not leave. He was born to young parents with equally young grandparents. His Grandfathers had both served in WW2 and talked fondly of military service.     While John was born to a loving family, life was abundant, but funds were limited, and his father extolled the virtue of getting to college. That opportunity would only be possible with a scholarship. He was fascinated by engineering and submarines and expressed the idea of becoming a serving officer. Nobody wants to be an officer on a submarine. The high school career person was surprised but did his research and found an opportunity. The Navy had a scholarship degree program, which led to officer training. He got accepted, did his four years of college, achieved an engineering degree, and entered the Navy as a commissioned officer. Our conversation is a fascinating insight into the life of a nuclear submarine, but it's more than that. It's what John learned from his experience in the military and how we took that out into the business world. I often hear from people who have served that transitioning between service life and Civic Street is tough. Jon struggled for seven years until he applied his navy principles to his work; the rest is history. The Gift of Asking for Help: Embracing Support and Collaboration

Can you ask for help?  Have you ever noticed how there are two types of people in this world? Those who can easily ask for help, and those fiercely independent souls like myself. My dad was the same way, always wanting to do things independently, even when he was struggling. It's something I inherited, but boy, does it make life harder sometimes! ( It's funny, having processed this show for you, I realised I did not ask for your help. See the note at the end. )  We humans are meant to collaborate and share tasks—that's what makes us so successful. But somewhere along the line, many of us became too proud to ask for help. My car was off the road this week, so I had to ask for a ride to Inverness. It felt weird, but you know what? The person I asked was genuinely happy to help, and we had a great day together. It got me thinking: why do we resist asking for help so much? Whether a big life challenge or a simple task, we all need support sometimes. I see this all the time as a coach—people banging their heads against the same wall, refusing to ask for help to get through it. There's no big revelation here, just a reminder: sometimes we have to surrender and ask for that support. So, where in your life are you struggling, and could you use some help? Maybe it's a decision you need to make or physical support for a task. Don't ignore it or procrastinate. Just ask for help—it might solve the problem and let you move on to the next thing. Trust me, it's worth it! So, how could you help me? Write a comment, Ask a question, or tell me about your experience asking for help.      The links to focus coaching are below.          Life Passion & Business Podcast is about finding answers to life's big questions through weekly interviews with guest speakers. This release takes us back to October 2021. Miriam had a successful career in finance, working in Fortune 500 companies, getting a PhD, and teaching finance. But she knew there was more to her life. Like all of these conversations, they never date.  If you are looking for focus coaching, the link is here.   Miriam Ismail exudes passion for life and always has. She credits her optimistic outlook to her mother and says she has always had the capacity to see the positive side of things, even when they are challenging. Through our conversation you will discover how she has combined her passion and zest for life with her desire to enable others to excel in their own purpose and ‘mission' in life.   I asked Miriam what she wanted to share with my viewers,, and she responded with three things she wanted to share with you. The first is to know that we are energy beings with a human experience and are here on a mission. Once we know and understand this, our whole perspective changes. She recommends treating time efficiently and wisely, focusing on learning, and evolving in whatever topic you are aligned with.  Miriam believes these three things offer the ultimate step to having a fulfilling life. She believes this is because everything we learn takes us further into life, and that is where we will know what our true calling and ‘mission' in life is.     Although we come at life from different backgrounds and perspectives there is a lot of alignment in what Miriam and I want for our clients. If you would like to learn more about Miriam and her eclectic approach to alternative therapies you will find all the links to her website and social channels at: http://www.lifepassionandbusiness.com/miriam-ismail-passion-for-life Through this link you will also have access to the coaching and other resources I offer.     Life Passion & Business is dedicated to exploring what it takes to be Extraordinary, to face challenges and rejoice in the opportunities they bring, and expand our vision into new ways of thinking and living.
