The Harvard academic Elisa New is host of the much acclaimed PBS series POETRY IN AMERICA. Now in Season Four, the show has featured conversations about American poetry with Joe Biden, Herbie Hancock, Gloria Estefan, Shaquille O'Neal, Bill Clinton and Al Gore. While America isn't normally considered a poetic nation, New's show has brought poetry into the homes of millions of Americans. So when I caught up with New, I asked her whether there was such a thing as an American poem and what it is about America that inspires memorable poetry. Elisa New is the Director and Host of Poetry in America, director of the Center for Public Humanities at Arizona State University, director of Verse Video Education, and Powell M. Cabot Professor of American Literature at Harvard University. New created Poetry in America, a PBS series, to bring poetry beyond classrooms into living rooms and onto screens of all kinds. The show can be seen on public television and streaming platforms, in schools and libraries, and on airlines. Guests include Joe Biden, Herbie Hancock, Gloria Estefan, Shaquille O'Neal, Elena Kagan, Nas, John McCain, Sonia Sanchez, Tony Kushner, Bill Clinton, Julia Alvarez, Bono, Cynthia Nixon, John Kerry, LisaGay Hamilton, Caroline Kennedy, Bill T. Jones, Katie Couric, and Al Gore and dozens of others. Alongside the PBS series, New produces educational materials on American poetry for all ages—from middle- and high-school students, to K-12 teachers, to lifelong learners—distributed by Harvard University, Amplify Education, and Arizona State University. In her capacity as Director of the newly established Center for the Public Humanities at ASU, New will partner with ASU faculty and with partners from an array of other institutions to create relevant, engaging interdisciplinary content that extends beyond poetry: content that will broaden access to the highest quality learning experiences in the Humanities and adjacent fields. New is the author of The Regenerate Lyric: Theology and Innovation in American Poetry (Cambridge University Press, 1992); The Line's Eye: Poetic Experience, American Sight (Harvard University Press, 1999); Jacob's Cane: A Jewish Family's Journey from the Four Lands of Lithuania to the Ports of London and Baltimore: A Memoir in Five Generations (Basic Books, 2009); and New England Beyond Criticism: In Defense of America's First Literature, A Wiley Blackwell Manifesto (Wiley Blackwell 2014).Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. This week on #Voices Radio Eric and Channing review sis of the Best of Voices from the Frontlines Classic conversations and we're proud to add a new excerpt from Eric's Conversation with Keith Lamar. Excerpt 1. Mumia Abu-Jamal In this excerpt Mumia and I discuss the concept of Menticide—wiping out a people's historical memory in order to disempower them, to demobilize them. In this case, we discuss how the knowledge of movement leaders such as W.E.B. Du Bois, Paul Robeson, and Malcolm X has has not been transmitted to a new generation of black youth, or youth of any race for that matter. Excerpt 2. Diane Fujino In this excerpt, Diane Fujino, Associate professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara discusses her recent book, Samurai Among Panthers: Richard Aoki on Race, Resistance, and a Paradoxical Life. She describes the political influences that turned Aoki into a revolutionary nationalist who joined the Black Panther Party at the very beginning. She describes how he was shaped by the Japanese internment camps, growing up in Black working class neighborhoods of Oakland, and in his early 20s by his work with socialists of the Old Left, before he joined up with Huey Newton and Bobby Seale in college. Excerpt 3. LisaGay Hamilton In this excerpt, actor and activist LisaGay Hamilton talks about the political influences on her life that evolved into her left, antiracist politics. And she discusses the difficulties of getting work in Hollywood, let alone getting acting roles that are politically progressive and meaningful, when you are an actor who is black, a woman, AND have left politics. Excerpt 4. Aris Anagnos In this excerpt, Aris Anagnos, the Greek and Los Angeles leftist and a major supporter of revolutionary movements around the world, discusses the growing crisis of European capitalism and what form that crisis has taken in Greece and why Greece and the Greek people have been scapegoated. Excerpt 5. Alex Sanchez In this excerpt Alex discusses the life and political influences that took him from being a working class El Salvadoran immigrant and former gang member to become an internationally known peace maker and executive director of the L.A. organization Hommies Unidos. Excerpt 6. Keith Lamar In this excerpt Eric is in discussion with Keith Lamar about the life and legacy of George Jackson and the relation of his legacy to Keith Lamar's struggle to survive in the hell that makes up solitary confinement. Keith reflects on movement building beyond the bars.

--- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kim-thanh-duong/support

In week four of our anniversary theme month we watched the 1997 movie Jackie Brown and rank the four movies we watched.
Oh how we've missed you, our little turkeys! We are here this week with actor and director LisaGay Hamilton. You Might Know Her From The Practice, Beloved, Winning Time, The Lincoln Lawyer, The Dropout, Vice, Nine Lives, House of Cards, Jackie Brown, and her Peabody-winning documentary Beah: A Black Woman Speaks. LisaGay gave us the skinny on network TV vs. the streamers, how Rebecca Washington's natural hair was revolutionary on The Practice, and how she formed a bond with legendary actress Beah Richards on the set of Beloved that later turned into a film. All that plus, we finally figured out the stories behind LisaGay's mystery roles in The L Word and Halloween: H20. This one was surprising at every turn. This is a bit of an unsung gem from the early 2000's featuring a bevy of BSA's and queens, including Glenn Close, Sissy Spacek, LisaGay Hamilton, Elpidia Carrillo, Robin Wright, Jason Isaacs, Joe Mategna and Mary Kay Place. And for fans of long takes, it's a fascinating anthology of 10-12 minute short stories each done in a single shot. Some stories are more compelling than others, and on first watch it can take a minute to catch up with the plots, but it's worth a watch and then a rewatch for all of the the lady acting and the intricate writing and direction of Rodrigo Garcia.
