I'm much more forgiving of Tony Gilroy than of Beau Willimon. The writing this week is...weaker by far. Perhaps it's the increased drug use in Star Wars that I'm not appreciating.I'm a big fan of "show don't tell" but sometimes the "show" part is unnecessary and even the "tell" part doesn't make sense. I won't comment specifically, but there were too many times in episode five where I felt there was an obvious way to do something better. I shouldn't be better. I don't want to be better at it. I want to be amazed and amused. I was neither this time."I Have Friends Everywhere" does everything it can to prove that phrase wrong. It's by design! Varian Skye...walking and talking? Ghorman Massacre...part one? A traitor that isn't Finn? D'Qar noire? My Sister Rhydo? The less I discuss episode five, the quicker I can get back to editing episode six's recap and discussion. In case you haven't noticed, this is late in the BBY3 week. This is the Way Podcast HQ is having a heck of a time, personally speaking. Lucasfilm has about a dozen Star Wars movies in various stages of development. One of them is a prequel from James Mangold that will tell the origins of the Force, the mysterious energy field created by life that binds the Star Wars galaxy together. In a recent interview with MovieWeb, Mangold opened up about what convinced him to make a Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm, sharing that "the really important aspects [were] the freedom to make something new." Mangold, who is co-writing the screenplay with Beau Willimon, explained that they wanted to find "a way on the page to say something original." With his movie set to take place 25,000 years before any other Star Wars project, Mangold will seemingly be freed from decades of lore. "I'm not that interested in being handcuffed by so much lore at this point that it's almost immovable, and you can't please anybody," the director added, suggesting that his Star Wars movie may drastically shake up the fandom's current understanding of the force.Announced in April 2023 at Star Wars Celebration Europe IV, Mangold's Star Wars movie will be part of an era dubbed "Dawn of the Jedi" by Lucasfilm. "The Force has become a kind of religious legend that spans through all these movies. But where did it come from? How is it found? Who found it? Who was the first Jedi? And that's what I'm writing right now," teased Mangold at the time of its announcement. Mangold has since cited Cecil B. DeMille's 1923 silent religious epic The Ten Commandments as a major inspiration for the movie. However, it is unclear when exactly the "Dawn of the Jedi" movie will go into production, as there is a chance Mangold's next movie will instead be his DC Universe feature, Swamp Thing. The filmmaker became attached to Swamp Thing in February 2023 and has been juggling the screenplays for both movies ever since. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has repeatedly stated that no DC movie will get greenlit until there is a finished screenplay that is worth turning into a movie, so there's a good chance that Swamp Thing may also be a ways off.The next Star Wars movie to hit theaters will be The Mandalorian & Grogu in May 2026. When the movie is finally released, it will have been almost seven years since the last Star Wars movie, 2019's The Rise of Skywalker. The Mandalorian & Grogu is a feature-length continuation of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. While plot details remain under wraps, Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin and the lovable alien Grogu will be joined on their first big-screen adventure by Star Wars Rebels character Garazeb "Zeb" Orrelios, Sigourney Weaver (in a mystery role), and Jeremy Allen White, who will voice a grown-up Rotta the Hutt. Jon Favreau — who created The Mandalorian — co-wrote and directed The Mandalorian & Grogu, which was shot entirely in California between August and December 2024 and is currently in post-production&

“About 12 years ago, I had my very first meeting to staff. It was a show being run by a playwright named Beau Willimon, and he'd done one season of a show that hadn't dropped yet, and they were going to do this crazy new model where the whole season was going to drop at once and they didn't know how it was going to go. And that was a show called House of Cards. And I was staffed for season two of that show before season one dropped. So, that was my entrance into television. It was my first meeting to staff on any show!” says Laura Eason, playwright and current showrunner for Starz's TV show Three Women.  In this episode of the Write On podcast, we chat with Laura Eason about her illustrious career as a playwright and how she made the intimidating transition to TV writing.  “I got a call a week before the [House of Cards] room started and I went to Barnes and Noble and bought the book How to Write the One Hour Drama. I'm not kidding. I was like, oh my God. And I called everyone I knew that had been in TV and said, ‘Tell me everything you can about being in a room and how it's supposed to go.' And then I was very lucky my first year in TV,” says Eason, who was nominated for an Emmy for House of Cards in 2017.  Eason also talks about her latest show Three Women, its unique structure, and also shares her advice for writing a TV pilot as the tides in Hollywood are changing.  “Well, we're coming into a different moment with this contraction that we're having in the [TV] industry. We had a very beautiful time where I think there was a lot of room for idiosyncrasy, and a lot of room for things to not quite check the list of everything a pilot should probably be, but because the voice was really unique or the world was interesting, those shows still got made. And I think we're in a moment now where all of the fundamentals need to be really, really strong. Like the engine of your pilot really needs to work. Someone needs to read that pilot and understand how you're going to be able to make 10 episodes or 20 or 50 episodes of that show, especially because there's less interest in limited series. So, making sure that you're paying as much attention to engine, to character, to your act structure, that the action is really moving and the acts the way it should as much as your voice, the unique things you bring, because of course that's the special sauce. But you really need to have both now, in a really strong way." To hear more, listen to the podcast.

In high school, Bill Kennedy got a job making copies at a law firm. Back then, he pictured himself taking the bar, buying a collection of three-piece suits, and making a career as a lawyer. But, when he met someone a decade older also making copies, who was producing records at the time, asked, “Dude, why would you want to do this? Why be a lawyer?” The beneficial challenger concluded, “[Do] you think the people here are happy?” The realization sunk in. “In college, I started to explore a career in creative writing. I got really into it. I wrote some short stories and a novella. Moved out to LA and did the assistant thing for a long time, eventually becoming the Writer's Room Assistant on the first season of House of Cards.” As an assistant, Kennedy would do anything from answering phones to scheduling meetings to reading scripts (he estimates he read over 1,500 scripts at this time). Most importantly though, he got to be a fly on the wall to learn the business from working in the business. “You see how the business works and develop your sense of taste.” He also worked as Beau Willimon's assistant, who wrote Andor and The Ides of March in addition to creating House of Cards. “That was an extremely formative experience for me. I got to pitch a lot in the room and got promoted to staff writer Season 2.” As a staff writer, Kennedy has credits for 22 episodes of House of Cards and more recently, became a staff writer for The Morning Show. The whole time, he's also been staying up late, writing spec scripts at night. “Even at its most tortuous, it's the best.” Want more? In a move that has Star Wars aficionados and film enthusiasts buzzing with anticipation, James Mangold has enlisted Beau Willimon, the creative force behind the critically acclaimed series House of Cards, to co-write the upcoming Star Wars film. This collaboration promises to inject fresh energy and depth into the beloved universe. Willimon, a seasoned storyteller who contributed to the success of Star Wars: Andor, brings a rich narrative acumen to the table. His work on Andor, especially the celebrated episode "One Way Out," earned him an Emmy nomination, highlighting his adeptness at weaving compelling tales within the Star Wars tapestry. Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, the film's working title, aims to explore the origins of the Force, set a staggering 25,000 years before the events of the original saga. Mangold, known for his directorial prowess in Logan, seeks to craft a narrative that pays homage to the saga's roots while exploring new horizons. His vision? To tell the "Ten Commandments of the Force" - an ambitious origin story that demystifies how the Force was discovered and mastered. Mangold's approach indicates a desire to delve into untold chapters of the Star Wars universe, unburdened by the extensive lore that characterizes the franchise. This fresh perspective could offer fans a novel and enriching exploration of the Force, arguably the saga's most mystical and compelling element. While Dawn of the Jedi does not have a confirmed release date, the Star Wars community is already abuzz with speculation and excitement. In the meantime, the franchise's extensive slate of upcoming releases, including a movie focusing on The Mandalorian and Grogu set for May 2026, and Disney+ series such as Star Wars: Tales of the Empire and The Acolyte, ensures that fans will have plenty of content to savor as they await Mangold and Willimon's epic. With James Mangold and Beau Willimon at the helm, Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi is poised to be a groundbreaking addition to the Star Wars universe. Their collaboration signals a bold step forward, promising a story that both honors and expands the lore that has captivated audiences for decades. Warum ist die Abgrenzung zu anderen STAR-WARS-Serien Fluch und Segen zugleich? Und was könnte einigen Leuten die Lust an der Serie nehmen? Episodes eight to ten of Andor center on a common theme: everyone is trapped in a literal or metaphorical prison. In this episode of Hyperspace Theories, Tricia Barr and B.J. Priester discuss how writer Beau Willimon used this theme as the keystone for all of the characters in this story arc. Cassian, of course, spends this arc in the Narkina 5 prison facility, where the Empire uses convict labor in a prison-industrial complex to produce countless components necessary for the military-industrial complex necessary to sustain its galactic tyranny. Kino Loy, played by the amazing Andy Serkis, is both a literal inmate and a metaphorical prisoner of the gamified labor regime within the facility. Others play along too, at least until they realize the game is rigged and they can never “win” their freedom. Beyond Narkina 5, the theme pervades the other characters' stories, too. On Ferrix, we see the ways Bix, Paak, Brasso, and Maarva suffer under Imperial occupation. On Coruscant, Syril thinks his connection with Dedra and the ISB are his ticket upward, only to discover how trapped he remains. Dedra perceives her upward trajectory continuing, but she remains bound within an ISB mindset. Elsewhere on the capital planet, Mon Mothma confronts the reality of her seemingly inescapable personal situation, including a demand for a terrible family sacrifice, and her newly revealed cousin Vel faces a similar personal toll. Luthen Rael, the “axis” of the burgeoning rebellion, struggles to unite the disparate factions of the incipient Rebellion, personified in Saw Gerrera's certainty that he is the only one with clarity of purpose. Despite his machinations and his successful Aldhani heist, Luthen admits that he is trapped by the obligations and burdens of his unbreakable commitment to sacrifice everything for the Rebellion. Cassian, at least, ends the arc by escaping the prison and swimming to shore. Whether any of the other characters can break free of their confinement remains to be seen. From never being on a TV staff, to becoming the creator and showrunner of “House of Cards,” Netflix's original foray into dramatic television and the corrupted world of politics… this week's interview with screenwriter, painter, and playwright Beau Willimon is sure to inspire you! Beau Willimon is a screenwriter, playwright, producer and most recently, an executive producer, showrunner and creator of Netflix's original series “House of Cards,” a wicked one-hour drama, from Media Rights Capital, that slithers behind the curtain of power, sex, ambition, love, greed and corruption in modern Washington D.C. His play “Farragut North,” became the basis for the motion picture screenplay “Ides of March,” which he co-wrote with George Clooney and Grant Heslov. “Ides of March” earned Willimon Academy Award®, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay, and it won The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Award for Best Screenplay. Other plays include “Lower Ninth” (Flea Theater, 2008; UK premiere, Donmar Warehouse, 2010), and “Spirit Control” (Manhattan Theatre Club, 2010). Subsequent productions of his plays have been mounted across the U.S. and overseas. Willimon was a recipient of the Lila Acheson Wallace Juilliard Playwriting Fellowship, named 2008 Playwright-in-Residence at the Donmar Warehouse, and he is a two-time winner of the Lincoln Center Le Comte du Nouy Award. Current theater commissions include works for the National Theatre of Great Britain, South Coast Rep, and the Flea Theater. His most recent play, “The Parisian Woman,” premieres at South Coast Repertory in the spring and will star Dana Delany, Steven Culp, Linda Gehringer and Rebecca Mozo. The play was inspired by Henri Becque's “La Parisienne.” Recently Willimon co-founded Westward Productions, a film and television production company, with co-founder Jordan Tappis. Among Westward Production's current projects is the forthcoming “Wally and Andre Shoot Ibsen” – a film adaption of Ibsen's play “Master Builder” developed by Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory, directed by Jonathan Demme. Willimon is an Executive Producer on the film. Other projects in development include a documentary about adventure traveler Karl Bushby's quest to circumnavigate the globe on foot over the course of two decades, and a documentary about Westerly Windina, a transgender Australian woman formerly known as legendary pro-surfer Peter Drouyn. In addition to his career as a writer and producer, Willimon served on a number of political campaigns, including Chuck Schumer's 1998 senate race, Bill Bradley's 2000 presidential race, Hillary Clinton's 2000 senate race and Howard Dean's 2004 presidential race. Willimon graduated with a B.A. from Columbia University in 1999 and an M.F.A. in Playwriting from Columbia University's School of the Arts in 2003. A St. Louis native, he now resides in Brooklyn, NY. GRUMPY CAT MET LIL' BUB AND EVERYTHING IS MADE OUT OF CHAOS! Hi there. This week's show was recorded in Minneapolis, site of the Internet Cat Video Film Festival and also the State Fair. The good news? Julie has "takes" on both! The one and only guest on the new HWYW is BEAU WILLIMON, the creator and writer of the Netflix version of HOUSE OF CARDS. He is wonderful, and you will agree. Listen to him tell us about his intentions going into the adaptation of the show, how that Howard Dean scream exploded during pre-meme times, which of Kevin Spacey's to-camera asides ended up on the cutting room floor, and how little he and David Fincher care about unlikeability. We also learn that Beau has a cat named Norbert. Also: some tantalizing details about the CITIBIKE PHOTO SHOOT, breathing, breaking up and being bad at both, some pressing questions about THE PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, the time #JoshJazz and I killed a moth together, a call for the violent murder of the think piece, and some confusion around Beetlejuice's sales pitch. A good show. An IMPORTANT show.
