Creating a sequel to the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was no small feat. However, the directorial trio of Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K.Thompson created a synergy that is already having audiences beg for more. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is simply the most visually stunning and action-packed superhero film of the year -- if not in years -- while also managing to create an intense story with emotional depth. Thus, it makes sense that these three are Consequence's 2023 Filmmakers of the Year -- but they aren't the only ones who deserve credit.Editorial Director Ben Kaye chatted with Dos Santos, Powers, and Thompson about how it took three directors and over 1,000 crew members to make this epic entry in the Spider-Man canon, AI, and sequel rumors. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse left some big spider-boots to fill — but director Joaquim Dos Santos was clearly the man to fill them. With Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the director expanded the Spider-Verse in new and unexpected directions while, crucially, staying true to the first film's tender and nuanced approach to character and story. Joaquim reveals how his early obsessions with VHS and comic books led to his first break in storyboarding with Starship Troopers: Roughnecks, through to helming a golden era of US animation, including Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, and Voltron: Legendary Defender. He discusses where he finds inspiration as a filmmaker, talks about the differences between working in TV and film animation, and gives his thoughts on entertaining a new generation.

Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, Jake Johnson, Oscar Isaac, Jason Schwartzman, Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya We're unsure whether or not our conversation about Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a canon-event or not, but we can 100% tell you that we've had a bit too much to drink to ever be sure. We're back with the first TDBR bonus episode in a while, and we make sure to make it bonus-y as possible with off-topic tangents about "new age culture" and what-not. We praise the film for its inventive animation, tight writing, solid voiceover performances, and in-depth references and easter eggs.

Episode 184!? WE ARE BACK and this week we're switching things up and giving your thoughts on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse! Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a 2023 American computer-animated superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Miles Morales / Spider-Man, produced by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation in association with Marvel Entertainment, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. The sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), it is set in a shared multiverse of alternate universes called the Spider-Verse. The film is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, in their feature directorial debuts, from a screenplay written by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller (who both also co-produce) and David Callaham. Shameik Moore voices Miles, starring alongside Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Vélez, Jake Johnson, Jason Schwartzman, Issa Rae, Karan Soni, Daniel Kaluuya, and Oscar Isaac. In the film, Miles goes on an adventure with Gwen Stacy / Spider-Woman across the multiverse where he meets a new team of Spider-People known as the Spider-Society, led by Miguel O' Hara / Spider-Man 2099, but comes into conflict with them over handling a new threat. Sony began developing a sequel to Into the Spider-Verse before its 2018 release, with the writing and directing team attached. It was set to focus on the relationship between Moore's Miles and Steinfeld's Gwen. The sequel was officially announced in November 2019 and animation work began in June 2020, with a different visual style for each of the six universes visited by the characters. With a runtime of 140 minutes, it makes it the longest animated film ever produced by an American studio. These sort of reviews usually go on our Patreon page so join up! The link is below! Sometimes it's a topic from the Fake Nerd Podcast, sometimes we need the room to discuss films on their own. Either way, they end up here in the Fake Nerd Cine-Files!An excerpt from Ep. 330 of the Fake Nerd Podcast, this is our review of Sony Animation's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - written by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham; directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. There's a lot of wonderful character pieces to discuss, some gorgeous animation, and many easter eggs. Any hangus are minor as they get into such a wonderful new chapter in the Spider-Verse saga. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is an even better film than the original and sets up not just for a third film but even the possibility of bringing Miles to live action. Honestly, they should just polish off the Oscar for this film right now. No need to see what else comes out. Yes, it's that good. Listen as Kriss, Ro and Brandon give a non-spoiler review.
