One of Aarron's first jobs as a kid was performing magic shows, and it taught him a surprising amount about creativity. Magic is, at its core, the art of storytelling. It's about directing attention, making people question assumptions, and blending creativity with technology to change how we see the world. That's why it's no surprise that Andrew Evans, founder of the Magic Patio, draws on his training from Stanford's d.school to craft truly mesmerizing experiences. We dive into Andrew's journey, from his childhood dream of designing roller coasters, to creating treehouses, working at IDEO and Nike, and eventually launching a magic show in his own backyard. We also explore how he's honed the art of engaging an audience, and we share tips on how to craft presentations that pull people in and make them feel part of the experience. Watch the video version of this episode on our Substack: https://designbetterpodcast.com/p/andrew-evans Bio Andrew Evans is founder and magician at The Magic Patio, a uniquely San Francisco magic experience. After entering what appears to be a strange library/candy store on Mission Street, guests discover the hidden wonders of a hand-crafted, secret magic theater with one-of-a-kind magic performances. More than designing and performing magic, my passion is creating unexpected experiences that transport people into new worlds and shift their perspective on what they perceive to be impossible. Think Urban Disneyland rather than David Copperfield. A trip to The Magic Patio will fill you with inspiration and wonder as you witness unexplainable feats in an intimate setting. Are you thinking about selling your business to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT)? Let's unpack a crucial insight from a recent conversation with Andrew Evans, a tax lawyer, about the sale of EOTs. One vital lesson from this is the need for patience when it comes to deciding on selling an EOT. Andrew stressed the importance of not rushing into such a significant decision. It's essential for business owners to take their time, seek financial advice, and carefully assess the valuation offered for the business. Selling to an EOT involves complex considerations, including legal, financial, and cultural aspects. Rushing into a decision without thoughtful consideration can have long-term implications for the business, its employees, and the legacy it aims to leave behind. By taking the time to seek advice, evaluate valuations, and understand the legal responsibilities as trustee directors, business owners can make informed decisions that align with the best interests of the company and its employees. This approach enhances the likelihood of a successful and mutually beneficial sale to an EOT. As a business owner or entrepreneur, it's crucial to approach the sale of an EOT with a strategic and patient mindset. Your decision-making process can ultimately impact the future of the business, the employees, and the overall legacy you aim to create. Andy was late to the game of rugby, only taking it up in West Scotland at the age of 17; but there was plenty of rugby pedigree in his family. He started life on the wing and post school found himself working as a Coach for the Scottish Rugby Union. He was meant to go into the Army at 19, but decided to loved coaching so much and went to Wales to get a degree in Rugby Coaching. Post University, he landed a role as Community Coach at London Scottish and then came across to London Welsh to train and play for the club as a Hooker. He then got involved with coaching the U18's and that then developed into his current role. We discuss his role at Imperial College and we preview this weekends' London Welsh U20 clash with Richmond. Pt 3 of our series that features Flock Fiber Festival meet & greet sneak peeks and the best wifi that Seattle's Parks department has to offer (lol) is here! This was our 1st festival partnership in this capacity. Meeting everyone and collecting their inspiring stories was so special, but we learned a lot! I cover some of those learnings and of course, you'll hear how these vendors we chatted with began their journeys as a maker! We also have a special peek into how 4 small businesses in WA work together to create beautiful fiber magic! Andrea of Apple Yarns- With my husband, Andrew Evans, we started Apple Yarns in Bellingham, WA, in 2007 in a 700 sqft retail store. Today Apple Yarns is made up of 4 unique divisions; in-person, online, subscriptions, and wholesale and we now occupy 4,000sq. ft. in Bellingham. In addition to loving colorful fiber, knitting, and crochet, one of the things that makes us unique is my love of small business. Jeananne of Cerulean Orchid- An online yarnie boutique and pattern house. We explore our curiosities and nerdom through yarn, patterns, stickers, project bags, and other yarnie goodies in collaboration with our favorite creatives. Jean of Juni and Si - I started dyeing out of curiosity for how it was done and quickly realized I loved seeing my ideas put to yarn. Before I had a plan, I knew I wanted to name my colorways after songs I love. To me, music and color are a perfect match. Both can ignite inspiration, spark a memory or even convey a person's mood without words. Jessica of Purls and Postulates - Aside from inspiring the name for her small business, Jessica's passion for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and cultivating that passion in others helped her lead a successful career in education for almost a decade before she turned her focus to dyeing yarns and ensuring her two boys grow up with an enthusiasm for learning.Ashleigh of Sewrella - Based in Apex, North Carolina, thousands of skeins of our whimsical, magical colorways get dyed every week for our preorder collections and in-stock tonals. We believe in the maker's experience being an indulgent one, complete with curated tools, housemade wool wash, hand cream formulated for makers, and so much more.Reshma of Hello Lavender - I launched Hello Lavender in 2016. I started by going to craft fairs and selling knitwear online but then transitioned into making polymer clay stitch markers and earrings in 2020, which took off in a way I could never have imagined. Fibershed Chat - Sarah from San Juan Woolworks, Jess from Skagit Woolen Works, Lydia of Abundant Earth, and Emily of Local Color - A chat about the ways their businesses collaborate to make local yarn and fiber in western Washington, from raising the sheep and dye plants to carding and spinning.Music by Despatches.

Book: “Pickleball Faith” Website(s): https://hearttug.org/piclkeball-faith.org Pickleball Faith: Inspiration on and off the Court Spring Hill, TN, October 26, 2022 — Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America and recently celebrities like Tom Brady, Kevin Durant, LeBron James and Brene' Brown have made headlines for their interest and love for the sport. But did you know that pickleball has been around for over fifty years and there are many Christians who play the game, as well? Using the author's background as a therapist, insights in the book address not only interpersonal relationships with others, but also a personal relationship with God. It's a journey of belonging and, also, becoming. Compassionate, raw, and real the author dives into issues of conflict, death, sportsmanship, and faith. You will be inspired to consider not only whom you'r playing with, but more importantly whom you are becoming personally and in relationship with God. Stacy Lynn Harp, has written the first of its kind book encouraging people of Faith to put their faith into action while they are enjoying their favorite sport. In this thoughtful Christian, memoir, you'll see the tender heart of a believer who shows us what it's like to walk out their Christian faith while not only laughing at themselves, but also realizing that our relationship with Jesus is the cure for our relationships with others. Early reader reviews have said that Pickleball Faith is a must read for all players and that it is a book that will make you a better Christian. Endorsed by three time US Open Pickleball Champion, Stephanie Lane and reviewed by the Pickleball Librarian, Andrew Evans, who said, “If Ted Lasso and Dale Carnegie wrote a book on pickleball together, it would probably be "Pickleball Faith: Inspiration On and Off the Court" by Stacy Lynn Harp. Stacy Lynn takes us on her inspiring pickleball journey and shares a little about her faith. In many ways, this is a book for all of US because we are all on a similar journey” Just in time for the holidays this is an inspirational gift for all the pickleball players in your life, but not just people who play pickleball, as the book is about relationships and how to just be a kinder person. About the Author: Stacy Lynn holds an M.S. degree in Clinical Psychology, from Vanguard University of Southern California, and has spent many years counseling women, children, and couples in a variety of circumstances, and always from a biblical perspective. She is also the Founder of Heart Tug International and host of Bible News Radio --an international program that addresses the news of the day from a conservative biblical perspective. Stacy Lynn has been married to her husband Randall since 1992. When Stacy Lynn is not playing pickleball she's leading bible studies, mentoring women and encouraging others in their faith. Her first book Five Successful Ways to Stay Depressed is a comical, very short seven page "book" addressing the issue of depression and can also be found on Amazon. It encapsulates a few scents, including leather, hay, bacon, and – yes – manure. First of all, don't panic. There's no poop in the wine. The odor comes from Brettanomyces, a wild yeast that is sometimes found on grape skins or in oak barrels that can make its way into wine. Some people – particularly those who grew up on a farm or have positive associations with horse stables – actually enjoy this flavor note. For more information on Cuvée Collective and how they're bringing the worlds of wine and NFT together in Web3, visit https://www.cuveecollective.comMentions: Pend d'Oreille Winery, Seis Soles, Adam O'Keefe, Andrew Evans, Gary Vaynerchuck, Wines we enjoyed this week: Cave B Caveman Red, Rutherford Ranch Chardonnay, Massican Vino Bianco, Elsom Cellars Grenache and Fanti Brunello di Montalcino. Please find us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/WineTimeFridays), Twitter (@VintageTweets) and Instagram (@WineTimeFridays). What's up y'all of little faith and welcome to episode 3 of the 2nd season of TFP. I'm your host Mat Hayes, and today I have the pleasure of welcoming Andrew Evans to the show. He's an author, speaker, and TV host. Let me give you the rundown:He's completed over 60 assignments for National Geographic, reporting from all 7 continents and over a hundred different countries. His purposeful journeys to these meaningful destinations include following an 18th century sea captain's diary to some of the remotest islands of Polynesia, hiking 500 miles across the kingdom of Jordan, and riding public transportation on a 12,000 mile overland trip to Antartica. He's a contributor to National Geographic, BBC Travel, The Boston Globe, and The Chicago Tribune. He's the author of 5 books, including his award winning memoir, The Black Penguin, as well as his bestselling guidebooks to Iceland and Ukraine. We'll talk a lot about his thoughts on the current war being fought there. And for the sake of this podcast's relevance, he's a gay-identifying, former Mormon! Get ready for one of the most intellectual conversations I've had on this show!Welcome to the podcast, Andrew!

Here is Part Two of an inspiring and entertaining conversation with Andrew Evans, professional magician and founder of The Magic Patio, San Francisco's premier magic experience. In this episode, Andrew and I pick up where we left off from Part One and continue to discuss how his business has changed during the Covid-19 Pandemic. At the end, we even have a little magic surprise that will blow your mind.
This episode is a little different and a ton of fun. I had the absolute thrill to talk with my close friend, Andrew Evans, who is a professional magician and one of the most interesting and brilliant people I know. Before taking the plunge to pursue magic as his full-time profession and open his own theater, the Magic Patio, Andrew had a successful career as a lead designer for the innovative design company, IDEO, based in the Bay Area. In this episode, Andrew tells us his story of how he went from a rollercoaster enthusiast to engineer to treehouse builder to designer to magician. We talk what it took for him to take the leap to open the Magic Patio complete with an expensive 5-year lease in the San Francisco Mission District and a staff of ten. Andrew and I had such a great time talking that I've split this conversation into two parts so that we can really dive into Andrew's story. In Part One, Andrew tells us his story leading up to the Covid-19 pandemic when restrictions on indoor gatherings forced the Magic Patio to temporarily close its doors. Stay tuned for Part Two when Andrew tells us how he has adapted his magic performances to a completely virtual experience for company happy hours, team celebrations and virtual offsites.
