This is the story of Madison Grant, a wealthy conservationist, influential progressive, and one of the fathers of eugenics in the U.S. His 1916 book, “The Passing of the Great Race,” prompted a flattering letter from Adolf Hitler about the book, which Hitler called his “bible.” Progressives regarded eugenics as cutting-edge science, but in the hands of “experts,” this “science” led to unspeakable horrors, the consequences of which are still felt today. Sponsors Jase History teaches us to have at least a little bit of skepticism for what the so-called “experts” tell us at any given time. In fact, it's best to have as many of the decisions that get made about you and your family in your own hands, and not in theirs. For instance, what about life-saving medications? If there's an emergency and you or a member of your family desperately needs a medication that just isn't available right now, what are you going to do? How do you even prepare for something like that? You should get a Jase case. It's a personalized emergency kit that contains essential antibiotics and medications that treat the most common and deadly bacterial infections. It provides five life-saving antibiotics for emergency use. All you have to do is fill out a simple form online, and you'll have it in case you need it. There are add-on options too, like EpiPens and Ivermectin. Jase Medical encourages you to take your family's health into your own hands. Go to https://jasemedical.com and enter code “Beck” at checkout for a discount on your order. Relief Factor I hope it's obvious to you by now that when it comes to decisions that directly affect you and the people you love, sometimes it's better not to leave things in the hands of the “experts.” Years ago, when I was dealing with almost daily, horrible pain in my hands, I sought out the advice of a lot of “experts.” And do you know what that got me? Medical bills, and no easing of my burden. That was before I started taking Relief Factor, and things changed for me forever. I got rid of the pain. I got my hope back, my joy back—I basically got my whole life back. And you know what? I'm no “expert,” either, but don't take my word for it even at that. If you're living with aches and pains, see for yourself how Relief Factor—a daily, drug-free supplement—could help you feel and live better every day. We're covering a big topic this week: eco-fascism, an extreme far-right ideology that combines environmental concern with fascist viewpoints. In this episode, Olivia takes us through a brief history of eco-fascism, its ties to the U.S. conservation movement, and the surprising story of conservationist-turned-eugenicist Madison Grant. Then Elise tells the story of arguably one of the most famous eco-fascists, the Unabomber, who went from math wunderkind to eco-terrorist. Other topics include ways to spot early fascist thought patterns, flawed logic, and why doom is the easy route. Subscribe/follow/press the button to keep up with new episodes every Wednesday! The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Ericka K. Jackson. An adopted White Woman, Dr. Jackson “is a professor of History at Colorado Mesa University and teaches courses in women's and gender history; the history of sexuality; immigration, race and ethnicity; and other courses focused on Modern U.S. History.” Gus was snooping in the university library and found her recently published work, Scandinavians in Chicago: The Origins of White Privilege in Modern America. Pay close attention to Dr. Jackson's response to being asked if her White adoptive parents are Racist. She was born and raised in a Racially Restricted Region of Michigan that was 98% White. It's non-white people continue to experience White Supremacy/Racism when attempting to reside here. Her Adopted parents told Racist Jokes too. Although I've forgotten exactly how or why I located this book, Dr. Jackson offers fascinating insight on what it means to be classified as White. She details how Whites born outside the US migrated to cities like Chicago and “assimilated” to being White Men and White Women. Specifically, so called Scandinavians benefited from being classified as the best of the White “stock.” Consequently, they were able to construct Racially Restricted Regions, accumulate staggering wealth and power - even beyond many native born Whites, all while maintaining “ethnic” pride for the homeland. And mistreating black people. We'll also examine Racist Jokes - which includes dumb blond jokes, the White Supremacist pseudoscience of T. Lothrop Stoddard and Madison Grant, as well as the heavily promoted (racist?) gimmick of tracing your genetic ancestry. #LorneCressLove #PamelaEvansHarris #FrancesCressWelsing #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Brett gets the latest from Sam on the Boilers, particularly regarding their basketball team. Brett asks Sam what the program needs to do in the off-season in order to improve as well as what they can do to avoid a slump at the end of their season in a similar fashion to last year where the team seemed to run out of a bit of steam. We also get Sam's thoughts on Zach Edey and whether he thinks he should enter the NBA Draft or return to Purdue for another year, ahead of his expected decision before midnight tonight. We are also joined by the Eastside Blazers Softball Team Head Coach, Brennen Kitchen! The Blazers won their regional yesterday against South Adams 8-2 and are headed into their semi-state matchup against Madison-Grant. In the name of eugenics, the Nazi state sterilised hundreds of thousands against their will, murdered disabled children and embarked on a programme of genocide. We like to believe that Nazi atrocities were a unique aberration, a grotesque historical outlier. But it turns out that leading American eugenicists and lawmakers like Madison Grant and Harry Laughlin inspired many of the Nazi programmes, from the mass sterilisation of those deemed ‘unfit' to the Nuremberg laws preventing the marriage of Jews and non-Jews. Indeed, before World War Two, many eugenicists across the world regarded the Nazi regime with envious admiration. The Nazis went further, faster than anyone before them. But ultimately, the story of Nazi eugenics is one of international connection and continuity. Madison Grant was a co-founder of the American environmentalist movement. Sounds great, right? Well, turns out he was super duper racist. Like, put people in zoos racist. C'mon dude, you could've been cool
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: A personal response to Nick Bostrom's "Apology for an Old Email", published by Habiba on January 12, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. On 9th January 2023, Nick Bostrom posted this apology for an email he sent on the Extropians listserv in the 90s. On 11th January 2023, Anders Sandberg linked to it on Bostrom's behalf in this twitter thread. I recommend you read those first as I don't summarise or explain the contents below. This is my personal response to reading Bostrom's apology and email and is (bar some minor changes) a cross-post of my tweet thread. As a meta-point I would like to flag that I do find discussion of the topic to be incredibly stressful. I have almost never posted here on the forum about even straightforward things. And debating race and IQ is something I find exceptionally emotionally tough. So I don't plan to participate in any extensive debates in the comments, hope that you understand why. My thoughts In my view, Bostrom's email would have been offensive in the 90s and it is offensive now, for good reason. His apology fails badly to fully take responsibility or display an understanding of the harm the views expressed represent. I think that being deliberately offensive to make a point is gross. When people in positions of privilege use or mention slurs lightly they are able to do so because they are blinkered to the lived experience of others and disengaged from empathy with those different to them. Note that I'm not generally in the business of picking people apart for small one-off past infractions. But I do think it would be virtuous to apologise for and to truly take responsibility for one's past actions. Bostrom's apology is defensively couched - emphasising the age of the email, what others wrote on the listserv, that it would be best forgotten, that fear that people might smear him. I think that is cowardly and shows a disappointing lack of ownership of his actions. But I don't just care about the inclusion of a slur in the email. I am deeply uncomfortable with a discussion of race and intelligence failing to acknowledge the historical context of the ideas' origin and the harm they can and have caused. To be clear, I think the view Bostrom expressed was wrong, and wrong in a harmful and reckless way. When you argue a point like this without addressing the context of how those ideas came about you will likely be missing something important we should learn from history and be badly wrong. When you are willfully disengaged from the empathy that underlies common decency you will have a massive blindspot in your reasoning and you will likely be badly wrong. I do not think that there is only one acceptable way to express thoughts about this issue, nor do I think this issue could never be discussed sensitively. And I do think it is okay for people to sometimes say things online that I think are plain wrong. But we all know that this issue is high stakes - ideas about racial superiority in the UK, America, and Germany led to some of the worst atrocities of the 20th century. And eugenists historically espoused utterly wrong views on race and intelligence wearing the guise of science. There were c.60,000 sterilisations in US eugenics programmes - focused on women of colour. Including those who were young, poor, victims of sexual abuse, labelled “feeble minded” (allegedly inherited via a recessive gene), and had their fates decided by committees of white men. Hitler was a fan of eugenicist Madison Grant. And at the Nuremberg trials, the Nazi defendants entered Grant's book - The Passing of the Great Race - in their defence tracing the lineage of their genocidal ideas to a popular American author. And we know now there are very good reasons to think that scores on IQ tests are affected by cultural factors, that global IQ databases are poor sour...

What if 'fairies' are a memory of a squat race of mysterious pre-humans who lived in Europe before modern humans arrived? Justin Mullis brings a LOT to the cabin in this episode. We cover: the origins of euhemerism and 'explanations' for Norse gods. Bernard Heuvelmans and euhemerism, our first (but not last!) connection to cryptozoology. Early famous supporters of a mystery race include Sir Walter Scott! Euhemerism used to explain troll legends in Sweden. Disenchantment and the changing attitudes towards folklore in the 19th century. David MacRitchie and the idea of the mystery fairy race. Encounters with African pygmies giving confirmation to this idea later in the 19th century. Connections to fantastic Victorian literature. Our boy Sabine Baring-Gould claiming the fairy race still exists. H. G. Wells' use of the trope. Madison Grant and the Passing Of The Great Race. E. F. Benson and (my favourite) The Horror Horn. And finally a deep-dive into the use of this trope by the heavy-hitters Arthur Machen, Lovecraft and Robert E Howard. The Hobbit, Homo floresiensis, and more connections to modern cryptozoology. SPEAKER:Dr. Richard Alba is an American sociologist, who is a Distinguished Professor at the Graduate Center, CUNY.He is known for developing assimilation theory to fit the contemporary, multi-racial era of immigration, with studies in America, France, and Germany. Alba's text on assimilation theory (written with Victor Nee), Remaking the American Mainstream (2003) won the Thomas & Znaniecki Award of the American Sociological Association and the Eastern Sociological Society's Mirra Komarovsky Award. It was the 36th most-cited work in sociology between 2008 and 2012. Author of "Ethnic Identity: The Transformation of White America" (1990), summarizes his thinking on the assimilation of the so-called white ethnics. His "Blurring the Color Line: The New Chance for a More Integrated America" (2009) applied these ideas to non-white Americans. His latest book is "The Great Demographic Illusion: Majority, Minority, and the Expanding American Mainstream".Demographic change and assimilation in the early 21st centuryUnited States - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lKuk...SYNOPSIS:While many conspiracy theories are short-lived, there are some that never seem to die, no matter how much contrary evidence is furnished. We have all heard of the holocaust deniers or those who consider climate change to be a hoax or those who insist that the moon landings were fake. Another such theory is that of the ‘Great Replacement' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_R...) that is centred around an elite conspiracy to replace the white population of America with non-whites. While the term itself may be new, the ideas behind this theory have persisted for a long time. In the highly influential book ‘The Passing of the Great Race' published in 1916, Madison Grant had called whites as an “endangered species”. The 2020 US Census report came as a confirmation for many adherents of this theory. It revealed that people who identify as “White alone” declined for the first time since the Census began in 1790. Yet more disturbingly for them, majority of Americans under 18 are now people of colour.Anxieties about the future of the white race are expressed repeatedly by demagogic politicians and popular talkshow hosts, and are further amplified by social media. The Great Replacement Theory has been linked to several mass shootings over the last decade. We at Argumentative Indians would like to understand what drives this theory, what makes it so prevalent and why has it proved to be so resilient? And finally, is there any truth to it?EXPLORE MORE:Find out about upcoming sessions and learn how you can join them live and become a part of the conversation - Explore More at - www.argumentativeindians.comDISCLAIMER:We invite thought leaders from across the ideological spectrum. In the episode, "American Eugenics, the Immigrant Degenerate, and Systemic Racism (S2, E18)," I share more of the ideology of Eugenics, or the practice of selectively breeding humans to achieve a better race, which has been taught in America since the early 20th century. Is it superior genes that excludes poverty from someone's experience? Or the ability to afford an education? In the belief that defective genes run in families, which supports that mental illness is hereditary, the status of the immigrant continues to be seen as degenerative as Trump proved in his anti-immigrant rhetoric rousing half the nation. Claiming only sterilization can eliminate our social problems, The Passing of the Great Race by Madison Grant, led to sterilization of 60,000 immigrants in America, and also inspired Hitler and German Eugenics in WWII. Today people are still being influenced by the history of racism, colonialism and Nazism in scientific publishing—particularly in psychiatric journals, which continues to contribute greatly to the deep-rooted systemic racism in America. #mentalhealth #mentalillness #bipolardisorder #depression #systemicracism #eugenics #madisongrant #mexicanamericans #italianamericans #NaziGermany #defectivegene #heredity #wrongtheory #whitesupremacyPlease visit my website at: http://www.notascrazyasyouthink.com/Don't forget to subscribe to the Not As Crazy As You Think YouTube channel @SicilianoJenConnect:Instagram: @jengaita LinkedIn: @jensicilianoTwitter: @jsiciliano

And we're back! We review Madison-Grant and look forward to one heck of a rematch.
On today’s episode, Sara and Misasha close out their 3-part series on Birmingham, hate in this country, and why you need to vote in 2020. Warning: explicit content, not meant for younger ears. Show Highlights: Misasha provides a detailed look at an altercation after a minor accident between a white teacher and a black parent in a racially diverse school parking lot in the Upper Darby School District in Philadelphia. The teacher berates the parent and eventually lobs the n-word. Sara points out that there’s nothing that a black person could say to a white person that is as effective and as insulting as the n-word. Entitlement plays a huge role in what comes out of your mouth when something doesn’t go your way. There’s a psychology that runs very deep from the time of this country’s founding. In the recent El Paso mass shooting in which a gunman killed 22 people, he claimed the shooting was in response to the “Hispanic invasion of Texas”. From the moment Donald Trump was a Presidential candidate and he announced in his campaign some warnings about some Mexican immigrants “bringing drugs into the country” and “being rapists”, Latinos have been worried about how such characterizations would affect them as one of the nation’s fastest-growing populations. A Pew Research Center study this year says that 58% of Hispanic adults say that they have experienced discrimination or been treated unfairly because of race or ethnicity. Across racial and ethnic groups, about 2/3 said that it had become more common for people to express racist views since Trump became President. Researchers say that victims of racism experience negative health outcomes. One out of six adults will have depression at some time during their life. In this country, suicide is the second leading cause of death among those aged 10 - 34. Worldwide, depression is the leading cause of disability. The total economic burden for depression is estimated to be two hundred and ten billion dollars per year. 35% of adults with depression receive no treatment at all. Long term depression means an increased risk of heart attack, heart disease, digestive issues, and a decreased immune response. US-born Hispanics report higher rates for most psychiatric disorders than Hispanic immigrants. Over 20% of Hispanics are uninsured, compared with 7 1/2 percent of white, non-Hispanic Americans. The American Psychiatric Association said insurance coverage for Hispanics is likely to be a function of ethnicity, immigration status, and citizenship status. 64% of Americans said that the United States will become a majority non-white nation by 2045. While 80% of Democrats say that the growth is positive, 61% of Republicans say that’s a negative development. From Adam Serwer’s article, “The seed of Nazism’s ultimate objective—the preservation of a pure white race, uncontaminated by foreign blood—was in fact sown with striking success in the United States. What is judged extremist today was once the consensus of a powerful cadre of the American elite, well-connected men who eagerly seized on a false doctrine of “race suicide” during the immigration scare of the early 20th century. They included wealthy patricians, intellectuals, lawmakers, even several presidents. Perhaps the most important among them was a blue blood with a very impressive mustache, Madison Grant. He was the author of a 1916 book called The Passing of the Great Race, which spread the doctrine of race purity all over the globe.” Serwer’s article continues, “Grant’s purportedly scientific argument that the exalted “Nordic” race that had founded America was in peril, and all of modern society’s accomplishments along with it, helped catalyze nativist legislators in Congress to pass comprehensive restrictionist immigration policies in the early 1920s. His book went on to become Adolf Hitler’s “bible,” as the führer wrote to tell him.” The Nazis didn’t understand how committed Americans were to democracy and did not want to buy into nazi Germany and live under a fascist government. We can’t ignore that we planted that seed that led to the extermination of so many millions in Europe due to the nazis. White extremists, both in the United States and abroad, have embraced Grant’s ideology and this isn’t likely to change with the Presidency. Through the actions we take and what we tell our kids, every day we have the ability to coexist and thrive together. Think about what you say and how you say it. We must be better than our past. This is a segment of episode #216 of Last Born In The Wilderness “The Armed Lifeboat: Eco-fascism & The Roots Of Conservationism In America w/ Sam Adler-Bell.” Listen to the full episode: http://bit.ly/LBWadlerbell Read Sam’s article ‘Why White Supremacists Are Hooked on Green Living’ published by The New Republic: http://bit.ly/2BgKsRG In this segment of my interview with Sam Adler-Bell, freelance journalist and co-host of the Know Your Enemy podcast, we discuss his article ‘Why White Supremacists Are Hooked on Green Living,’ published by The New Republic. In this discussion with Sam, I ask him to elaborate on his research into the deeper connections between the roots of environmentalism and conservationism in the United States and rise of “eco-fascism” in our present time — an ideology expressed in the manifestos and stated intentions of white supremacist mass shooters in recent years, and in the rise of reactionary far right populism to refugee crises around the world. As Sam explains in his piece for The New Republic, the first thing we need to understand about this subject is that “most eco-fascists are sincere in their environmentalism,” and that the earliest forms of fascism in Europe were directly inspired by the earliest forms of environmentalism and conservationist efforts in the United States, as embodied in the projects of Teddy Rosevelt, John Muir, and Madison Grant (co-founders of the Sierra Club, 1892) with the formation of the National Parks Service in the United States. “These men shared an affinity for scientific racism. Roosevelt praised Grant’s 1916 white supremacist tome ‘The Passing of the Great Race, or The Racial Basis of European History’ as “a capital book.” Another fan, Adolf Hitler, wrote Grant a letter, calling the book his personal “bible.”” (http://bit.ly/2BgKsRG) The point of this discussion with Sam is to understand, as leftists, how we can more fully engage with an often misunderstood but crucially important component of fascist ideology, currently manifesting as "eco-fascism" in contemporary discourse. The emergence, or reemergence, of an ecologically-conscious fascism does not come from a vacuum; it a direct response to the ecological and climate crises manifesting across the globe right now. Mass migrations and the inevitable sociopolitical responses (ultranationalism, xenophobia, the hyper-militarization of borders) is a part of this trend. We must learn to counter these trends and the dehumanizing narratives that allow space for them to grow (e.g. the Malthusian narrative of overpopulation as the main driver of these crises), and Sam and I discuss some of how that might be accomplished in this episode. [Intro: 9:45] In this episode, I speak with Sam Adler-Bell, freelance journalist and co-host of the Know Your Enemy podcast, “a leftist's guide to the conservative movement.” The subject of this interview is his article ‘Why White Supremacists Are Hooked on Green Living,’ published by The New Republic. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, there are over 28,000 threatened species in the world. But this is hardly the first time our planet has faced the prospect of mass extinction. In the beginning of the 20th century, America’s flora and fauna were seriously threatened by urban encroachment and over-hunting. And one animal at the center of this struggle was the bison. So in celebration of World Animal Day, Brian and Nathan explore the history of bison in America. We’ll find out how the bison went from an animal in excess to near extinction and we’ll learn how Madison Grant’s work preserving the bison went hand and hand with his theories on eugenics. Plus, we’ll hear from the Buffalo Representative of the Eastern Shoshone about his efforts to restore the buffalo. Image: Buffalo at water circa 1904 by Denver Kendrick. The white nationalist ideas of Madison Grant influenced Congress in the 1920s, leaders in Nazi Germany, and members of the Trump administration. This week, we share an episode we loved from It's Been A Minute with Sam Sanders that explores a throughline of white nationalism in American politics from the early 20th century to today.
The Atlantic staff writer Adam Serwer explains how racism and white nationalism were deeply embedded in America not just from its founding, but throughout the 20th century — and how one man corralled those ideas into a grand pseudo-scientific theory that influenced U.S. immigration policy and eventually Nazi Germany. His article about that man, Madison Grant, is called "White Nationalism's Deep American Roots." Email the show at samsanders@npr.org
The Context of White Supremacy hosts the 2nd study session on Lothrop Stoddard's 1920 classic, The Rising Tide Of Color Against White World Supremacy. In the days before her death, counter-racist scientist Dr. Frances Cress Welsing strongly advised black people to dissect Stoddard to better comprehend White Supremacy in the 21st century. A journalist and Harvard-educated historian, Stoddard was an intellectual titan during the early 1900's. He was an unabashed proponent of Eugenics - the belief that better Whites should procreate, while lesser Whites and especially non-white people should not reproduce. During the first week's review of Rising Tide, Madison Grant - another early 20th century thought-leader and eugenicist, writes an introduction to stress the critical need for Stoddard's views. Grant and Stoddard are flagrant: "The basic factor in human affairs is not politics, but race." They propagandize the "superior" achievements of the White minority and bemoan the teeming number of melanated humans on the planet. While reviewing so called Asians, Stoddard's greatest fear is that different Asians begin working together against Whites. We hope students of Dr. Welsing will actively engage in these sessions. #AnswersForMiriamCarey INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/GusTRenegade CALL IN NUMBER: 641.715.3640 CODE 564943#
