Over seven years of Meg's life was like being in a prison day after day, little was in her control. In the beginning she thought it'll pass, life will get better, but year after year the punishment just got added to earlier means of torture. The physical abuse was scary and many times she didn't think she'd survive, but the mental controlling games destroyed her from the inside out. She couldn't escape her mind. If there was a moment of peace it was quickly replaced with some form of his evil game that never let her forget that this wasn't a nightmare, it was her life. She would torture myself on especially hard days by playing the “if I had only” or “I wish I would have” game. Meg Grett-Pratt is a survivor of abuse – she experienced emotional, financial, sexual, physical, and stalking abuse. Meg studies digital forensics, and is an advocate for victims of domestic and sexual assaults and volunteer for victim crisis hotlines. Her goal is to help prevent and put an end to abuse and violence in relationships. In episode 571 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out why Meg decided to go to Colorado Mesa University, early warning signs of an abusive relationship, understanding the more subtle forms of abuse — emotional, digital, and financial, what are common “green flags” or signs of healthy relationships, how students can safely set and enforce boundaries in a relationship, how to help a friend may be in an abusive or controlling relationship, how technology changed the way abuse shows up in college relationships, what Meg's healing journey look like, and what tools helped her the most.

Without the Amazon, the world as we know it ends. With no hyperbole, it is the churning epicenter of weather systems worldwide. It creates rain. It regulates temperature and humidity. It stores carbon dioxide. It regulates trade winds from the Atlantic Ocean and all the moisture they move. It releases around 20 billion tons of water into the atmosphere every single day. It supports ecosystems not found anywhere else on the planet. And we know next to nothing about most of what lives there. The XPRIZE Rainforest competition's 2024 winner, Team Limelight, aims to change that, to show all of us that the planet's greatest buried treasure is worth fighting for. And that the time to fight is now. In this second installment of a two-part special Rio G20 series, host Tate Chamberlin interviews Team Limelight Rainforest's Dr. Thomas Walla, Professor of Biology at Colorado Mesa University, and Outreach Robotics Cofounder Guillaume Charon, two among the many creative minds intent on tackling the world's most pressing concerns in XPRIZE competitions around the globe. Here, they break through the Amazon's canopy to shed light on the world's most misunderstood treasure and all the sway it holds over the future of literally everything.

We are so excited to have our very first librarian, Laureen Cantwell-Jurkovic, on the show to discuss the impact of and potential responses to the onslaught of book challenges and bans that have exponentially increased since 2022. Dr. Cantwell-Jurkovic is head of access services and outreach at Colorado Mesa University. She has researched and published on information literacy instruction and critical thinking activism. Amelia and Kirk explore with Dr. Cantwell-Jurkovic many consequences of book bans and challenges, which have increased more than 100-fold over the past several years, including "soft censorship" and self-censorship that result from the large administrative burden that results from responding to thousands of challenges, even when a particular book is ultimately not banned outright. Dr. Cantwell-Jurkovic walks us through how local activities at the level of school districts and municipalities ultimately influence policies at the county, state and even potentially national level. She emphasized the danger of these limitations which can come from people on all parts of the political spectrum. She then explored the unique properties of books, which have a special ability to build empathy through reading fiction, and Kirk explored how lack of access to books could have downstream effects when healthcare professionals are not exposed to diverse narratives as children. Finally, the importance of protecting libraries and books at the local level was highlighted.Being a librarian, Dr. Cantwell-Jurkovic shared many resources with us. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
More than any other creature, it has proven itself over millennia to be man's best and most useful friend. At first it was just another prey animal, but eventually it became such a close companion and coworker that it seems impossible for many of us to imagine ever eating one–although probably a billion people around the world do so on a regular basis. For thousands of years it remade cultures and societies, even creating new languages. Then, at the moment of its greatest societal impact, it was quickly replaced by the internal combustion engine. I am of course referring to the horse. And with me to talk about the immense importance of the horse in human history is Timothy Winegard, heard last week explaining the horrible effects of the mosquito in human history. He is Associate Professor of History at Colorado Mesa University, where as a Canadian expat he is by Colorado law also required to coach the college hockey team–which he does. More importantly for our purposes today he is author of The Horse: A Galloping History of Humanity.
Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
It is without question the most lethal predator in the history of the planet. It has killed more humans than any other single cause of death—something around 52 billion over the course of 200,000 years of human history. In 2022 alone, it probably killed 680,000 people—a number much reduced from the carnage it has caused in past centuries. This super-predator is the mosquito, which has since the time of the dinosaurs carried diseases in its tiny body that have destroyed nations and cultures, and altered the destinies of those who survived. With me to describe the immense historical impact of the mosquito is Timothy C. Winegard. He is Associate Professor of History at Colorado Mesa University, and author of the 2019 bestselling book The Mosquito: A Human History of Our Deadliest Predator. For Further Investigation A review of The Mosquito in Emerging Infectious Diseases The CDC Guide to Mosquitoes One of the earliest works of animation: How a Mosquito Operates, from 1912 Two videos related to William Crawford Gorgas: one, from the Gorgas House Museum in Alabama, highlights his contribution to the building of the Panama Canal; the other is a one minute clip of a silent movie of Gorgas traveling on a train through the Canal Zone.

For the transcript and full story go to: https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/josh-mathe Highlights from today's episode include: Josh Mathe You know, bicep curls are awesome. And eating broccoli is awesome. But I really try to also help people connect with what is the, you know, state of family and friends and connections in your life? What are you doing with your brain every day? How was your spiritual health? Josh Mathe So you know, it's a lot of psychology, a lot of mental and spiritual and emotional work to make change, it's definitely not just about knowing the amount of carbs, protein and fat you should eat or how many bicep curls you should be doing. It's, about fundamentally changing who you are and how you move through the world. Josh Mathe But for simplistic reasons. I think there is a voice that is kind of sabotaging ourselves. And that's the voice that is speaking that is driving the bus. I think when we are negotiating with ourselves like that might sound like I had a really hard day you, I've been working really hard, I deserve to sit on the couch and watch the show and not go for a walk, I can go for a walk tomorrow. There is no shortage of public policy to pass through in Colorado in 2024. Legislators are trying to address a state in the throes of a housing affordability crisis, an infrastructure crunch, a crime wave, a post-inflation economic climate, a surge in migrants from the southern border, a statewide homelessness crisis, and a mental health crisis, on top of the usual array of issues from healthcare costs to energy reform to environment. Lawmakers have put forward over 600 bills in the 2024 General Assembly session to try to catch it all. Joining Host and Chairman Earl Wright is CSI's Director of Legislative Services Jake Zambrano. Together they discuss proposed legislation about oil and gas development, property taxes, education, crime and the general mood and timbre of this year's legislative session. With less than a month to go, this is the episode you need to recap what has already transpired and equip you for what remains. Thank you for listening to Common Sense Digest. I remember a time when my faith was clouded by skepticism, which is why I'm thrilled to have John Vandervelde, the Campus Director of Ratio Christi at Colorado Mesa University, join us for an intriguing discussion about his journey from skepticism to deep faith. John opened his heart to Jesus, a transformation made possible by the marriage of logical facts and a personal encounter with God through music. In a surprising twist, John made a career shift from mechanical engineering to professional ballet dancing. We take a deep look into this unique journey, from the reactions he received from his colleagues and his church community, to how dance became the conduit for revealing his artistic talents. Drawing from Psalm 139, John shares insight into how his dance journey was a process of self-discovery and understanding God's plan for his life. Our conversation transitions to the societal and church views on masculinity, challenging the set stereotypes often portrayed by the church and touching on the concept of faux masculinity. We explore how biblical masculinity should be applicable universally, regardless of culture, and how the church can be more inclusive by breaking away from a narrow definition of what it means to be a man. Finally, we reflect on the pivotal role of the Bible in shaping our understanding of masculinity, gender, and identity. You definitely won't want to miss out on this episode!Timestamps:(0:00:17) - Embracing Biblical Masculinity and Career Transitions(0:14:26) - From Engineer to Dancer(0:19:36) - Masculinity in Society and the Church(0:29:42) - Gender Roles and Stereotypes(0:44:06) - The Bible in Our LivesJoin us weekly as we strive help people embrace God's standard for sexuality! The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Ericka K. Jackson. An adopted White Woman, Dr. Jackson “is a professor of History at Colorado Mesa University and teaches courses in women's and gender history; the history of sexuality; immigration, race and ethnicity; and other courses focused on Modern U.S. History.” Gus was snooping in the university library and found her recently published work, Scandinavians in Chicago: The Origins of White Privilege in Modern America. Pay close attention to Dr. Jackson's response to being asked if her White adoptive parents are Racist. She was born and raised in a Racially Restricted Region of Michigan that was 98% White. It's non-white people continue to experience White Supremacy/Racism when attempting to reside here. Her Adopted parents told Racist Jokes too. Although I've forgotten exactly how or why I located this book, Dr. Jackson offers fascinating insight on what it means to be classified as White. She details how Whites born outside the US migrated to cities like Chicago and “assimilated” to being White Men and White Women. Specifically, so called Scandinavians benefited from being classified as the best of the White “stock.” Consequently, they were able to construct Racially Restricted Regions, accumulate staggering wealth and power - even beyond many native born Whites, all while maintaining “ethnic” pride for the homeland. And mistreating black people. We'll also examine Racist Jokes - which includes dumb blond jokes, the White Supremacist pseudoscience of T. Lothrop Stoddard and Madison Grant, as well as the heavily promoted (racist?) gimmick of tracing your genetic ancestry. #LorneCressLove #PamelaEvansHarris #FrancesCressWelsing #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
