Alexandre Gabriel (Instagram) is the owner of Maison Ferrand, which produces products like Citadelle Gin, Ferrand Cognac, and Planteray Rum (formerly Plantation Rum). Several years ago, among many conversations about rum, Alexandre realized that no one could tell him with great clarity about the rules and history of Navy Rum. He decided to get to the bottom of things and commissioned the author and enthusiast Matt Pietrek to get to the bottom of things. Matt spent time in England researching things and not only began to uncover important details but also met a gentleman named Michael Fogg, who ended up providing a world of information they came to rely upon. This year at Tales of the Cocktail, Matt and Alexandre hosted an event to announce the release of an entire book on Navy Rum, 300 Years of Royal Navy Rum and its Techniques. It has two different sections. In one, Matt showcases the history of Navy Rum and in the other, Alexandre lays out the 7 pillars of producing it. I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy for my conversation with Alexandre, but it appears the book still has not been released. You can sign up on Matt's website to be notified when it is released.Do you know someone who might enjoy this? Please share it.To honor Michael's contributions to the research, Alexandre named the rum “Mister Fogg Navy Rum”, as Michael has since passed away. Thanks for reading and listening. After decades spent managing each, he's seen how the industry has evolved to expect new ideas across these sectors. You'll hear how the cognac, gin, and rum categories have developed over time to become what they are today. The value of partnerships Whether it's building strong connections between the farmers that give suppliers raw materials or developing the right connections with distributors, Gabriel sees maintaining quality relationships as paramount to the success of any business. „Návštěva Maison Ferrand předčila všechna moje očekávání. Alexandre Gabriel, který stojí za značkou rumů Plantation se nebojí improvizovat a zkoušet nové věci. Jeho návštěva u nás je tak trochu zázrak,“ říká ambassador Plantation rumů pro Českou republiku, Jan Albrecht.
Entrepreneur and Master Distiller Alexandre Gabriel refers to himself as "the creator of emotions" and a "simple farmer," but he is a true visionary in the spirits industry. Born in Burgundy to a farming family, he established Maison Ferrand in 1989 with headquarters in the historic Château de Bonbonnet where Cognac had been made for 10 generations. It would be quite easy to say that Alexandre Gabriel has a unique sense about spirits. Not only did he take Maison Ferrand, a dormant Cognac house and turn it around, but he's also created some of the most iconic brands in a variety of spirit categories. One of the most notable is Citadelle Gin. Created in the mid-'90s, Citadelle was a front runner in the craft gin movement and set an example that raised the bar for the category, an example that many have tried to follow. Although Gabriel created the brand as a tribute to early French distilling, the brand has taken a unique approach to the production process from its botanicals through to its distillation. To find out more, we talk to Alexandre Gabrielle about the brand, its philosophy and how best to use the expression in a cocktail.
In this episode of On The Back Bar Podcast, Chris talks to Alexandre Gabriel owner and master blender of Maison Ferrand. Alexandre discovered an old Cognac home and transformed it into what is now known as Maison Ferrand, in the heart of Cognac's Grande Champagne region. Along with a small team, Alexandre turned the Cognac House into one of the most distinctive producers of artisanal spirits in today's market, resulting in an award-winning portfolio of coveted brands. Alexandre's love for creating fine spirits is unquenchable and his fruits of labor are well known and appreciated by both bartenders and fine spirit lovers alike. He has looked to the past to create spirits for the future that include: Pierre Ferrand Cognac, Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao, a traditional French Orange Curacao based on a 19th century recipe; Citadelle Gin and the Plantation Rum portfolio. Francois Zelbat knows the ins and outs not only of the cocktail community but also of each of the very unique and distinguished potables he represents. Working for a powerhouse like Maison Ferrand is a lot of sales reps dreams but to continuously have such a high passion for the brands he represents is something I don't see very often in my line of work. It was great to be back behind the mic after taking nearly a year off and this interview was well worth the wait!
