At the age of 5, Bonnie had her right leg amputated. And once you listen to this podcast, you will understand, there was no way that was going to stop her. Micro resilience Part IV: increase your fuel efficiency The micro-resilient concept this week comes from Bonnie St John's 4th framework: increasing our body's fuel efficiency. You can increase your fuel efficiency in the way you approach drinking water. Research tells us that our brain is made up of 70% water, the rest of the body is made up of 60-65%. Water plays a key role in how most of our body systems function. Some of the symptoms that can easily be due to dehydration: · A dry mouth and the sensation of being either thirsty or hungry · Generalized body aches and muscle cramps · Dry skin that seemed more prone to irritation · Decreased ability to focus well – even during high energy times · Multiple non-specific coughs and colds How do you stay hydrated in a crisis? How you plan to have access to water may need to be adjusted to how you are going to stay hydrated while wearing a mask, and for some, gloves and gown. How are you going to stay hydrated if it is not appropriate to keep a bottle of water with you in your work environment? Do you have influence as a leader within a work environment: · where you work specific blocks of time where you musts wear masks? · within the healthcare environment with those who must wear full PPE? · with those who work directly under the sun? · with those who are working from home? During this global pandemic we have come face to face with the immutable truth that human safety is critical to our economic well-being. How do you define human safety in the workplace? How does the long working hours culture fit into the definitions of human safety that are emerging as a result of this pandemic? The purpose of this focus on a micro moment in resilience is to find what works best for you. Leading Through Crisis: Part III Reframing Your Mind Traditional psychology has demonstrated through multiple research studies that people tend to · focus on negative events rather than positive ones · learn more from negative outcomes and experiences · have a stronger motivation to avoid pain than to seek pleasure · make decisions based on negative information rather than positive data · remember negative experiences over positive experiences It is not easy to choose to take a positive stance; to change our focus · When we hear bad news, it takes 3-4 seconds for it to go into our long-term memory. · When we hear good news, it takes 12 seconds before it drops into our long-term memory. If we get distracted before the 12 seconds is up, it doesn't go in at all. This idea of reframing our minds does not take us toward an inability to be aware of reality; or leave us irrelevant in a crisis. Rather this this idea of reframing our minds and choosing the positive moves our mental stance to a place where we can advance our effectiveness in times of crisis and change. Consider one question to reframe your mind: “What am I committed to during this crisis?” Reframing your thinking by adding in the balance of realism with optimism is a key – in the moment – to avoid heading down the path of negativity. Offering grace has the potential to be a significant differentiator not only in your life but in the lives of those with whom you live and work. Responding to the question of what you are committed to and then, adding in the willingness to be gracious to those around you moment by moment will help you discover the path to reframing your mind. Micro resilience: Part II: Resetting your Primitive Alarms 1. Primitive Alarms: a physical response needed for immediate survival. 2. The prefrontal cortex is best known for things like planning, and problem-solving. 3. The amygdala are responsible for the perception of emotion; they scan for possible threats 4. The amygdala hijack is a term coined over 25 years ago by Daniel Goleman in his book on Emotional Intelligence. In a crisis situation every leader needs to be aware of this potential of being hijacked by their amygdala. One exercise to use your emotions as a resource is called Labeling – Relabeling. The reality is that in any crisis there is always a challenging balance when elements of surplus and insufficiency coexist with extraordinary variability. · Too many people/too little food · too many with acute illnesses/ too few critical hospital supplies · too many emails/too little time to read and process Labeling: The better you can label your emotion the more you distance yourself from the feelings and the emotions that are hijacking you. In just a micro segment of time you can choose to separate yourself from the emotion that is vying for control. Relabeling: Relabeling becomes a thoughtful mind shift. Relabeling your emotions moves you forward. You are not changing how you feel but you are changing what the emotion means. With relabeling, you can gain control of your perspective. Don't be misled… The problems are still as intense. The reality is still raw. But, you have poised yourself to lead more effectively. Since we're all about helping you to dream bigger, think better and do more of what you were put on the planet to do… I'm always looking to experiment with ways to increase our resilience. Some strategies lend themselves to what's called, “Pre-Traumatic Growth” by Bonnie St. John in her book, “Micro-Resilience: Minor Shifts for Major Boosts in Focus, Drive, and Energy.” These are positive psychological changes that lead to more energy, engagement, and joy in the face of life's challenges. Specifically… who doesn't need a quick boost of energy and confidence when we're heading into a potentially stressful situation: Maybe it was a situation at work: Getting ready for a presentation Going into a difficult conversation Prepping for a job interview Or maybe it was a DREAM THINK DO Scenario: Walking into a NEW class you've always wanted to take and finally signed up Pitching your IDEA to that person who might be able to help you make it happen Finally asking her THAT question In this QUICK DTD episode, we're going to talk about something that's been labeled “Power Poses.” It's a technique in which people stand in a way that a “powerful” or “assertive” might stand or hold themselves. By doing so, some researchers have found these “poses” actually increases a sense of confidence and focus. The idea of “Power Posing” was first named and described in a paper by Dana Carney, Amy Cuddy, and Andy Yap in the journal, Psychological Science. In their initial research, Carney, Cuddy, and Yap asserted that “High-Power Poses” produced an increase in testosterone (which causes an increased sense of confidence and focus) and a decrease in cortisol (which tends to reduce a sense of anxiety). These researchers have continued to produce studies and books on the subject. Now, I'll be the first to admit that some of their underlying science has been disputed. And some researchers really push back on this concept. BUT… that's where our “experiment” will come in. I want you to give it a try. I can tell you that since I don't have an easy way to check my own testosterone or cortisol, I'm not 100% sure my rates change in the slightest. BUT I can tell you that I've been utilizing the “Power Poses” for the last year or more… and it's made a difference. And even though some researchers might poo this and/or consider it a placebo effect… I can tell you that I've benefited from it significantly. So, I wanted to share it with you!
