Shrinking Back to Try to Stay SafeThere's so much happening in the world, and sometimes it can make you feel small. It is normal to respond by trying to hide your light as a way to stay safe. Sometimes, it feels like the brighter we shine, the worse the criticism can be. So, we learn to live dimmed down as a way to protect ourselves. For a while, dimming your light may have kept you safe - especially as a child. But sometimes, even when you get to a safe space, the habit of dimming down is still active. The only issue is that now it is keeping you stuck and depriving the world of your creations and ideas.That pattern may even be ancestral, not something you directly experienced; instead, it was a pattern handed down through the generations. Again, honour those wise and strong people you descended from, and practice being your unique and radiant self now that you are in a safer space.Sometimes, we dim down to remain connected to others, choosing not to reach beyond what others might be capable of. But there are costs to living dialled down. There's a cost to living with less of your vital life force energy. It takes enormous effort and energy to not be yourself. And when you are not claiming your full space, the whole world has a little bit less light.Why Shining Your Light is ImportantWhen one person shines their light fully, it creates a space for everyone else to shine. It is time to bring forward your brilliance and light into the world.If you are able to shine with everything you are, you can easily bring your ideas forward. You make what you are supposed to make and share what you are supposed to share. If you can create something that can influence even one other person in a positive way, then it is worth the small risk of being criticized by people who are cranky anyway.When you are living in that fully illuminated space, the negative doesn't stick to you. Instead, you can examine negativity with good humour and compassion. It doesn't wound you or stop you. You can notice it all with curiosity and then keep flowing forward with joyful creativity.It might seem small, but it creates a ripple of change and kindness forward in ways you may not ever fully see. Every time you share your light, there is more for everyone.Solutions for Shiny, Brillant People Like YouGrounding Meditations. When you ground, you feel safe and rooted. That alone can give you an immediate boost of confidence. Connecting to Earth energy is nurturing and supportive and can help you feel connected to something patient and ancient. Try this Grounding Meditation to help you feel anchored and ready to expand.Clear your Aura. If that energetic space around you is clear, you have a buffer between you and others. It creates a live and let live space. Then, you are less affected by other people's energy and opinions. You shine! We all need that support, and that can create a safe space to begin sharing your work and ideas with others. Spend more time with kind people who are cheering you on. We discuss a recent study which explores the use of AFT (Advanced Footwear Technology), or Super Shoes, during training and competition. The study describes the injuries sustained in amateur runners and we look at what that means for the integration of these shoes into training programmes. We review the racing from IRONMAN Australia and IRONMAN 70.3 St George at the weekend. Power posing is a concept largely popularized by Amy Cuddy, thanks to her viral TED talk and book, Presence, on the subject. The basic gist is that if we make ourselves feel large, like we are occupying more space–think Wonder Woman pose– then we'll feel more powerful. Steve Magness is a sport scientist and a track and field coach. He coaches competitors at all levels, including athletes who have competed in the World Championships and the Olympics. He is Head Cross Country coach at the University of Houston, a Lecturer of Strength and Conditioning at St. Mary's University, UK and author of three best-selling books, including the latest: The Passion Paradox. On Jan. 29, 2019 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open's Dream Day on the famous 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale's Stadium Course, Amy Bockerstette, who has Down syndrome, demonstrated to the golfing world what a determined athlete with self-confidence and a positive attitude can achieve. While playing with PGA Tour players Gary Woodland and Matt Kuchar during the Tuesday practice round, Amy hit the par 3 tee shot 117 yards into a greenside bunker, splashed her sand shot to within 8 feet of the pin, and made her par putt in front of a roaring crowd. The I GOT THIS Foundation was born out of this moment, which was captured on video and has since gone viral, receiving more than 54 million views on social media platforms. Golf is a sport where everyone plays the same game on the same field. I have spent a lot of time in my career working with athletes, coaches, and parents on mental preparation, mental skillsets, and performance enhancement. I even got my Masters in Sports Psychology. After all of this, I fully understand the importance of positive thinking to athletic performance. When it comes down to it, sports psychology is optimizing your mental capacity to deal with the pressures of competition. It is the key to countering one of the biggest barriers my clients encounter: negative self-talk. How many times have you beaten yourself up over mistakes, lack of preparation, or an inability to move past a mistake in a competitive situation? This is episode number 104: Three ways to lift your mood (instantly). Welcome to the mindset for life podcast. This is Bethanie Hansen, your coach. And I'm here to talk about three ways to lift your mood. Why would you want to lift your mood? Well, there might be a reason; maybe you're going into a difficult meeting or conversation. Or maybe you're just trying to get through the work day and you can tell that your mood is low. Whatever the reason, lifting your mood is going to help you to perform better, and the things you do in work and in life. It'll help you show up in your relationships positively. And it will even help you feel great about yourself. Whatever is happening in your life, in your work or in the world at large. Lifting your mood can have beneficial outcomes for you. Strike a "Power Pose" So the first way to lift your mood is simply to stand tall, raise your arms in the air, like you're making a Superman shape, or even the why and the YMCA song and breathe deeply. You can stretch your body out in this way. And you can feel all your muscles stretching, and you can get some oxygen flowing to your brain. And that will help you to just move things along in your body and your mind. Breathing deeply stretching your arms out is an instant mood elevator. In fact, I believe it was Amy Cuddy, who did some research on this. And it's called a power pose. When you put your arms in this large Y shape or V shape, like putting them out in their full extended strength, it makes you larger, it also helps you to feel power. Physically, it tells your brain that you're in charge. And it can lift your mood instantly. If you're going into a job interview, or a difficult meeting, and you have a restroom or a bathroom, you could go into if there are people around, you could do this in private. And you could just breathe deeply while you have that going with your arms. And you've already taken it up a level. So you've lifted your mood with just one simple action called a power pose. Now, if you want a variation for that, one way I like to do this is to put my hands up in the air, my arms are straight, and I'm walking through a doorway. Because I'm five foot seven, I can touch that doorway easily. And I will just push my arms backwards just a tiny bit to even stretch them more. And it makes me feel alive and amazing. It's invigorating. And it also elevates my mood a little bit more. So there's your tip number one, lift your mood by stretching your arms all the way out and breathing deeply. Listen to Energetic Music The second way to lift your mood is probably my favorite number one way is music. Music can lift your mood and weighs almost nothing else can. Unless you choose not to listen to music, right again, do that because it's not reaching you anywhere. The the best kind of music, in my opinion, is 1980s Pop. And that just tells you what your I love. So certain 1980s pop songs I can put on and they bring energy to me no matter where I am or what I'm doing because of the beat. And because of the message in the music, so they're happy. And even if they're breaking up with someone or they're singing about a negative subject 1980s Pop generally has a positive vibe to it. So the beat is a certain tempo that enlivens your soul and just brings energy to you. You know, the beat of the music really does have something to do with the energy that you get from that music. You have a heartbeat that might be around 80 or 90 beats per minute during low activity levels or something like that. And if you start to exercise, maybe your heart, heart rates gonna go up to 120 Beats Per Minute 130. If you get music in that zone, and you just start listening to it, pretty soon you're moving faster, because it's pushing you to increase your physical activity. And it's helping you increase your heart rate just a little bit which of course brings you a sense of having more energy.
Your nervous system controls and coordinates all other systems in the body.The posture system provides the physical framework for all other systems of the body to resist gravity and function within our environment.The posture system is dynamic with constant micro movements in an effort to stabilize the posture system depending on the signals received from the cranial nerves.Your brain is dynamic and craves complexity. Your movements are useful to the brain when they are complex and rewarding. Here we can see a “use it or lose it principle.” Purpose of the BrainYour brain's main purpose is to create refined movement. And yet, we are interacting with our environment less and less over time. When there is a decrease in brain function you have a postural decline. Unfortunately, we are facing a new health epidemic of digital dementia.Power Poses and ExerciseA power pose is a stance like Superman or Wonder Woman. You are stimulating the front side of your brain. Toward the back you have plug in points of the cranial nerves. You are making changes in your endocrine system and hormones.When you stand in an open power pose you not only look more confident, you actually ARE more confident. Studies have shown that this posture stance brings about neuroendocrine and behavioral changes due to increased testosterone, decreased cortisol and the feeling of more power.When you sit slouched over you are getting the opposite. Your cortisol increases because the adrenal gland put you in a fight-or-flight mode. Stand and own your position. Benefits of ExerciseExercise for at least 30 minutes per day improves your mood. It also increases tryptophan which is needed to produce serotonin. Role of Postural NeurologyThe postural neurologist seeks to identify the “origin of distortion” and use brain-based postural correction techniques to improve posture and motor output.The motor cortex controls voluntary movement on the opposite side of the body. The sensory cortex integrates and processes sensory information. When the sensory cortex receives a message it processes what that message means and what to do about it.What can you do to improve your posture immediately?Take consistent posture breaks. Stand up and do the opposite of what you are doing. Raise your hands. Take your eyes off the device and look at bright natural light in a green space. Take a power stance and smile. In essence, relax in a way that makes sense to your nervous system by extension. Take a 2 - 3 hour break from technology every day. Use your brain and release your imagination. It's important to spend time outside. Your brain develops better in that environment. (This is especially important for children)Participate in consistent exercise or movement for 20 - 30 minutes every day. You are stimulating mitochondrial DNA to lengthening telomeres which increases your quality of life. Your body continues to grow and not grow stagnant. Otherwise you lose you connection to the outside world. You don't have to run a marathon or lift heavy weights.
