Catching up this week with return guest David Nir, who for over a decade has been an influential election analyst and the creator of Daily Kos Elections. Within the past week, David has moved his analysis to an independent site - now called The Downballot. In this conversation, David provides an update on his transition: what is happening, why now, and David's long-term goals for The Downballot. Then, stay for my original conversation with David - originally released over three years ago in early 2021. David has a fascinating career arc that charts the rise of the online grassroots from a ramshackle group of political junkies in the early 00s to now being one of the pillars of the political universe.IN THIS EPISODE…Why David is launching The Downballot as a new independent, site?Living through the downturn of the online ad economy...Long-term goals David has the for The Downballot...Elected officials who rabid political junkies...What was David's first introduction to feminism? How being the child of a Holocaust survivor has informed who David is…Why David seeing a Geraldine Ferraro rally in 1984 was an ill omen for the ticket's chances…David's early memories of Rudy Giuliani in NYC politics…The candidate who taught David to avoid getting too attached to any individual politician…How David fell in love with down-ballot races…How David made the decision to forego a legal career to plunge full-time into politics…How unlikely candidates in Kentucky and South Dakota kicked off the rise of the Democratic netroots…How an "extra penny" let campaigns know the arrival of the progressive netroots…Lavishing praise upon the DKE Daily News Digest and Elections Data…David's tips for candidates and campaigns who want to connect with the Daily Kos community…The story of Daily Kos and the rise of Jon Ossoff… David helps topple the “turncoat” IDC legislative coalition in New York…What one requirement would have to be part of David's online dating profile… AND….Brendan Boyle, Ben Chandler, Wes Clark, Howard Dean, David Dinkins, John Edwards, Marc Elias, Geraldine Ferraro, Rudy Giuliani, Kaili Joy Gray, Paul Hackett, Karen Handel, Stephanie Herseth, John Kerry, Jeff Klein, John Lewis, Rachel Maddow, Walter Mondale, Markos Moulitsas, Wiley Nickel, Jean Schmidt, Jeff Singer, Elliot Spitzer, Tim Tagaris, Trent Thompson, Elizabeth Warren,  Stephen Wolf, AND MORE!

SERIES 2 EPISODE 146: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANNA-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Sure, the split legal decisions in New York courtrooms matter. Trump got a brief reprieve in the business fraud case ($500 million bond reduced to $175 bond, he gets an extra 10 days grace; but his son said even a $15 million bond was almost impossible) but the Stormy Daniels election hush money case starts as scheduled April 15. But in the span five hours, Trump posted a psalm he claimed to have "received" from somebody in which he was compared to Christ, and said that he would have to sell his "babies" due to Judge Engoron, and he announced to an uncomfortable crowd of reporters "You can't have an election in the middle of a political season." He's NUTS. Besides which, I always thought he'd decide he was not Jesus but Napoleon. RFK JR'S NEVADA OOPSIE: He celebrated getting enough signatures to be a Trump stalking horse on the ballot there. Then somebody noticed that your petitions have to mention just not the presidential candidate but the VICE presidential candidate. And he's not announcing who that is until today. He has to refile all the signatures. Hopefully the likely Veep, the ex-wife of the founder of Google who wanted a divorce settlement of a billion, can front RFK Jr the cash. THE CONTINUING RONNA McDANIEL DISASTER: No, Maddow didn't stop it last night. She could've stopped it last week, or last month if she'd stood up and threatened to quit when her bosses overruled her - live on the air - and reversed her dictum that MSNBC would not carry Trump speeches live. And no, MSNBC's president did NOT say McDaniel won't appear on the network. And no, Chuck Todd didn't put himself at risk by speaking out. And no, don't even get me started about Joe Scarborough.  In the old days we used to have a more direct way of stopping such subversions of journalism. I threatened to quit, on the spot, at least twice. Rachel did it at least once. Scarborough used threats on a regular basis. Brokaw did it.  Ultimately the problem is: people paid big salaries to make essential decisions about the coverage of an election that will decide whether or not we still have a democracy next January, thought she was a GREAT HIRE. And nice as the protests from Todd and Welker and “Golly I hope they reconsider” Scarborough were, bluntly, the moment the hiring of Ronna Romney McDaniel was announced, MSNBC anchors and producers and writers, and NBC NEWS anchors and producers and writers, should have literally walked off the job. Gone on strike. Because it comes down to this: the hiring of Ronna McDaniel didn't represent some kind of political balance. It conceded – STIPULATED – that there can be some kind of balance, some kind of yes-but, some kind of bothsidesism, between the reality of the 2020 election, and election deniers and the Trumpist cult. She IS the flat earther, the climate change denier. She might as well be Q from Q-Anon. She is reality, trying to appease hallucination and mental illness in hopes of making… more… money. Her presence as an NBC News employee LEGITIMIZES the election deniers and the conspiracy theorists… and Trump. It is an act of journalistic self-defenestration and – for the future democracy in this country – an act of self-immolation. B-Block (30:50) IN SPORTS: Shohei Ohtani makes it worse: nobody has explained the money transfer to the bookie. Now the NBA has a burgeoning scandal: the fringe player who everybody placed "prop bets" on (33:40) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: The sad post-mortem for Flaco the Central Park Owl, and farewell to Bill Jorgensen. (50:50) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Rece Davis isn't actually one of them but his dry sense of humor created another mini-sports wagering mess at my alma mater. Now we know what Jeff Yass bought Trump with. And Charlie Kirk wants to use machine guns and whips at the border. C-Block (57:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Since I've asserted that the NBC News/MSNBC protest over Ronna McDaniel is tepid compared to the Him-Or-Me ones we had in the 2003-11 era, I'll tell you everything I know about them. It stars Tom Brokaw, John McCain, Scarborough, Michael Savage, Chris Hayes, Maddow, me, and a cast of thousands. Pull up a chair: it takes 27 minutes.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Chuck Todd was uncharacteristically animated on This Week as he used Vivek Ramaswamy's book Nations of Victims against him as it proved him a complete fraud. Markos Moulitsas, the founder of DailyKos, challenged Pat McCrory, the former governor of North Carolina and proponent of the No Labels third-party movement, during a segment on Meet the Press. McCrory claimed that 65% of Americans are dissatisfied with the two major parties and are seeking a third-party alternative. He emphasized that the No Labels movement is gaining momentum.  Moulitsas questioned the legitimacy of No Labels, asking what issues it stands for and pointing out that the group avoids taking positions on controversial subjects like abortion. He argued that No Labels is a "movement that says we stand for nothing." Markos also raised questions about the transparency and funding of the No Labels movement, suggesting that their goal is not to advance public interests but to slow down the shift towards more progressive policies in America. The Daily Kos founder emphasized that current progressive policies, particularly those supported by the Democratic Party, align with what a majority of Americans want, contrary to the No Labels narrative that a third party is necessary. It's worth noting that this interaction is a compelling example of the growing tension between grassroots progressive movements and more centrist or corporate-funded initiatives like No Labels. Moulitsas' questions shine a light on the vague mission of No Labels, which presents itself as a cure for partisanship but avoids taking a stance on issues that matter to Americans. These "centrist" or "moderate" organizations often find financial backing from wealthy donors who have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo, which Moulitsas correctly points out. They are trying to will a mythical center into existence to protect an abusive and greedy class. It's critical for activists and politically engaged citizens to scrutinize these movements carefully, as they can serve as tools to dilute the push for meaningful change. They not only maintain the status quo but hurt the working class. They are well funded and message in a manner that confuses many into voting against their own interest. I had an extensive interview with Markos at Netroots Nation 2023, where we discussed this issue and many others. It is one that Democrats and Progressives need to watch here. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/politicsdoneright/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/politicsdoneright/support

(2:50) Trying to backpedal on his latest coup call, Trump just digs his hole deeper: he is now subject to 18 USC 115 Section 2385: Advocating the overthrowing of the government of the United States. (4:30) Some current GOP figures finally - mildly - defend the Constitution against Trump (6:30) But best of all: dozens of GOP quotes, from Boebert to Hannity, vowing eternal vigilance to protect the Constitution, including Kevin McCarthy's "That Constitution, and the freedoms it protects, must be defended and preserved for us and for our children." THIS IS VICHY CNN A-Block (1:37) SPECIAL COMMENT: Apropos of the Vichy CNN shake-up yesterday that saw Chris "Ate Paste" Licht reward Jake Tapper after he defended the "Special Master" ruling and attacked those on MSNBC who attacked CNN's biased analysis, and rewarded Alisyn Camerota for questioning whether what Ron DeSantis did to the asylum-seekers in Texas could really be kidnapping because they were treated so well by their rescuers in Martha's Vineyard, let's look again at the beginning. When Licht fired Brian Stelter and cancelled "Reliable Sources," we didn't know he had also already fired John Harwood. When I knew him at MSNBC, Licht was Joe Scarborough's hatchet-man. And now he's John Malone's. This... is Vichy CNN. B-Block (19:57) SPECIAL COMMENT: Would that it were exclusive to CNN. It's not. Every news outlet in the country has had "the" meeting: 'If this country goes fully fascist, how do we protect our profits?' The meetings began at MSNBC in 2006 - and they have never stopped. I told that story in the first episode of this series and it's worth revisiting it in the context of the collapse in the only ratings measurement that counts in television: viewers aged 25-54. These ratings at MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News are as low as they've been in 20 years, and MSNBC's newest show has settled in nicely into last place in prime time in the category. The fear of offending Right Wingers will kill the profits of cable news long before fascist oppression can. C-Block (38:38) SPECIAL COMMENT: With a little perspective, the obsession of CNN and other right wing media with the presence of two marines in the background of President Biden's Philadelphia speech about the threat posed by MAGA-Republicans, seems ridiculous and futile. EVERYTHING they've done since has served merely to prove that the president was right; contrast what Biden said in Philadelphia to the Q-Anon references and Q-Muzak and mass fascist salutes and stochastic calls to violence that Trump presented in Youngstown.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Right-Wing Dark Money Group Gets $1.6 Billion Donation From Tax-Dodging Business Mogul: One observer called the massive gift “an extraordinary manipulation of loopholes in tax and campaign finance law.” A right-wing dark money group controlled by Leonard Leo—a legal activist who has played an outsized role in packing the U.S. Supreme Court with conservative ideologues—was the beneficiary of a massive, possibly unprecedented donation of $1.6 billion from a shadowy electronics mogul with ties to the Koch network. The enormous infusion of cash, first reported Monday by the New York Times, could bolster and embolden right-wing efforts to drag the U.S. judicial and political systems even further to the right for decades to come, imperiling the climate, what's left of abortion rights, the franchise, and other freedoms that have come under growing threat from the GOP and conservative judges. DID TRUMP STEAL THE MUELLER INVESTIGATION DOCUMENTS TOO? A BLOCK (0:00) We know the FBI suspects Trump purloined documents relating to nuclear weapons (0:35) but now it looks like he may have also taken stuff from boxes figuratively marked "MUELLER" (0:49) because his lackey Kash Patel has left a trail of interviews in which he has promised to go into the National Archives, take all the "Russia-Gate" and impeachment documents, and publicly release them (1:55) Judge Reinhart promises partial release of the search warrant affidavit (2:55) and Ryan Goodman and Laura Rozen of "Just Security" saw the connection (3:07) the infamous John Solomon is named one of Trump's reps to the Archives (3:37) and Patel is named the other one (6:24) Patel began telling interviewers, on the record, of his plan in MAY (7:40) ABC News made the linkage too (8:58) If Trump and/or the documents at Mar-A-Lago are at all connected to the Patel scheme, it may trigger espionage charges against Trump (9:55) Goodman notes one document released Thursday reveals DOJ got the search warrant on the premise that the Mar-A-Lago stash included EVIDENCE OF A CRIME (10:57) meanwhile Trump world is looking for the rat who talked to DOJ and even suspecting family members, when DOJ could easily have figured all this because Kash Patel has been opening his big kazoo for four months! B BLOCK (16:00) Every Dog Has Its Day (17:44) Postscripts To The News: the Congressman who insists the FBI director appointed by Trump was actually appointed by Biden (18:27) The candidate who looks like all five members of Kids In The Hall playing the same character has already lied about Liz Cheney after defeating her (20:23) and Mike Lindell means it this time: THIS election conference will prove to everybody who's ever lived that there's fraud! (21:14) Sports: DeShaun Watson suspended, fined $5,000,000, apologizes - and then insists he's innocent and the settlement means nothing (22:30) We've put out a Silver Alert for Tom Brady (23:36) An Alabama County Republican group apologizes for using a logo with hooded Klansmen in it - they vie with the Prime Minister of Norway and a Minnesota violence-threatening GOP candidate for Worst Person honors. C BLOCK (28:48) Things I Promised Not To Tell: CNN cancels the only TV show that regularly criticized Fox News, and fires host Brian Stelter (30:23) The Daily Beast quotes a source who insists new CNN President Chris Licht "didn't want to do this" (33:11) I call BS because at MSNBC, Licht was Joe Scarborough's Henchman and after Scarborough attacked me on twitter in a violation of MSNBC policy that was supposed to resort in automatic suspension, Licht warned management that if they suspended Scarborough, Scarborough would go to right wing media and say he was being persecuted by me because he was a conservative. (37:48) In May 2010 Licht also helped Scarborough get Markos Moulitsas of Daily Kos suspended from MY show and ultimately banned from MSNBC because Scarborough didn't like something Moulitsas had tweeted (40:29) Licht demanding that Maddow, Matthews and I stop criticizing "Joe's friends" was a staple at MSNBC (41:25) and Licht was hired to run CNN to enable the new Trump-Friendly owners to move out the liberals like Stelter. (42:42) Less Thurber than usual for a weekend edition, but his impeccable fable "The Peacelike Mongoose" and the story behind it involving my father, and James Thurber's daughter!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This episode first aired on August 25, 2021. On this week's episode of The Brief, hosts Markos Moulitsas and Kerry Eleveld unpacked the current state of COVID-19, voting rights, and electoral politics in Texas with special guest Julián Castro—as well as whether Castro himself is preparing for a run against Gov. Greg Abbott next year. Castro, a Democrat from Texas, served as the mayor of San Antonio and was Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Obama. He has offered critiques of the Texas governor's lack of leadership throughout the pandemic and shared his thoughts with Moulitsas and Eleveld on how Abbott's failure to adequately respond to the COVID-19 crisis and protect Texans' lives is one of many reasons why the Texas Republican Party is experiencing rapid losses from their ranks.
