This episode revisits the conversation I had with my friend, Maida Garcia about violence against women and the way minority women often get left out of the conversation. The original conversation was recorded 2 years ago- after the disappearance of Gabby Petito- a young white woman.I brought this conversation out again because it is very timely for a tragedy my family experienced a few weeks ago when my sister-in-law was murdered in an act of Domestic Violence. If you, or anyone you love is a victim of Domestic Violence please have them go to the National Domestic Violence Hotline : https://www.thehotline.org/ or call: 800-799-SAFE (7233) or text START to 88788Support the showI want to hear from you!Support & Subscribe- your support helps me to keep making this podcast! Today on What's Next? our Disability Reporter Emyle Watkins talks to paratransit activist, Stephanie Speaker, about the need to revamp some of the regulations around NFTA Metro Bus Paratransit Access Line service. The service provides origin-to-destination transportation to individuals eligible for it under the American with Disabilities Act. Afterwards, Lorenzo Rodriguez speaks with Shara Armprester an author and the creator of Natural Beauty Cuties. Shara's mission is to promote self-care and the unique beauty that comes with being a black and brown girl. We also discuss the growing concerns with Period Poverty – the lack of access to sanitary products, education, and hygiene facilities for the part of our population that menstruates.
As some of you may know, I was attacked by a man walking in my neighborhood park around 9:45 am. The man made no attempt to steal anything; his only goal was to hurt me by tackling me like a football player. You can read the full story here: https://sfstandard.com/2023/08/03/asian-female-attorney-hate-crime-speak-up/. - The latest crime data shows that 11% of assault victims citywide in San Francisco are Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. - 25% of the elder abuse victims are AAPI, the highest among all the racial groups. - I grew up in a poor neighborhood where there gang fights, drive by shootings, and other issues that come with growing up in poverty. -But I have never been viciously attacked outside like this. This is a park where children are playing nearby; it should be the safest place on earth. So instead of the usual interview with guests, this episode is dedicated to reconnecting with our bodies and our breath. - The meditation itself is less than 6 minutes (0.1 billable hours). - If you want to skip straight to the meditation, it starts at 3:16. - If you can't do the full meditation, then do 5 deep breaths (in through the nose, and out through the mouth) first thing in the morning, right before bed, and anytime you're feeling anxious. In this week's special bonus episode of “This is Motherhood,” host Joyce Brewer speaks with Jamie Jones, a childbirth educator at Birthsmarter, a doula, a pre- and postnatal corrective exercise specialist, and a certified personal trainer. Jamie's birth experience and her experience with postpartum depression led her to switch careers, so she could help support other women through the pre-and post-birth experience. Since then, she's learned so much and Jamie explains why it is so important for BIPOC moms to advocate for themselves when giving birth – she also shares tactics and tools they can use to combat postpartum depression and explains how new moms can motivate themselves to move their bodies during a very exhausting time.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
