About Robert Poynton Robert lives off grid - literally and metaphorically. His remote, hilltop house is off the electricity grid, so they are solar powered. And the small Spanish town where it is located is well off the beaten track for anyone but rock climbers or bird watchers. Robert is increasingly bringing people there to give them a different perspective. Arenas de San Pedro and the effects of the landscape, features quite prominently in Robert’s latest book, ‘Do - Pause’. (https://thedobook.co/products/do-pause-you-are-not-a-to-do-list) You can see more from Robert at Do Lectures (https://www.thedolectures.com/search?q=Robert+Poynton) or his other book that came from it, ‘Do – Improvise’ (http://thedobook.co/collections/guidebooks/products/do-improvise-less-push-more-pause-better-results-a-new-approach-to-work-and-life) As well as an author, Robert is a designer of learning experiences like ‘The Creative Tapas Experiment' or ‘The Oxford Praxis Forum Reading Retreats'.  (https://www.studioriley.com/learning-from-the-the-oxford-praxis-forums-reading-weekend-avila-spain-september-2013/) Robert believes in playing around with things (and people) rather than trying to control them. The arenas that Robert plays around in include The Do Lectures (http://www.thedolectures.com/) , Schumacher College, (http://www.schumachercollege.org.uk/) Oxford University and his own back yard – including Dehesa de La Serna (https://dehesadelaserna.com/) , a family farm where his wife produces organic beef and which Robert uses for many of the events of ‘The Pause Project’(https://www.robertpoynton.com/about-the-pause-project) . Episode highlights What is a pause Tips from Robert as to how we can build pause into our days Busy is the new lazy Robert eloquently discusses how busy can be perceived as lazy Following our intuition and feeling into our body The concept of time as non linear Looking at the phrase ‘never waste a moment’ and other worn phrases The concept of the zen monastery door not touching the ground and why this is so What are you filling spaces with if not allowing yourself to pause The concept of burn out which is where we get to if we don’t pause The polarising opposites of fast and slow and how there can be something in the middle of this which can be opened up if we remain curious. The slow movement and how this doesn’t necessarily feed into the action of pausing How guilt and shame come into pausing How our homes and children can become a series of tasks to be completed without pausing Robert’s advice to start small in building pause into our days but how we shouldn’t look to see it as another thing on our to do lists. About Dorka Herner Dorka previously worked in TV as an editor and a journalist and hosted her own TV programme and online video series. After her fifth maternity leave Dorka started to work as a therapist using a novel approach called Mirrortherapy. However, first and foremost Dorka is a mother. She has five children - four boys and a girl - ranging in age from 4 to 16 years old. Dorka took three years maternity leave with each child and during this time gained a wealth of invaluable parenting experience. She has combined this with her background in psychology and coaching in Inspired Parenting. Dorka has been inspired by her mother Dr Agnes Geréb, a well-known pioneering gynaecologist-obstetrician, independent midwife and champion women’s rights in childbirth. She was sentenced to two years in prison in Hungary in 2011 for attending home births. After a lengthy unsuccessful legal appeal Agnes was granted clemency by the President of Hungary in 2018 following pressure from the international human rights community. Episode highlights How Dorka made space and time to write her book with 5 children! Co-dependency and how nobody else can make you happy - and it is not our job to make our kids happy. How Dorka feels her way in parenting and trusts her gut feeling as her navigation and compass and how we can learn to do this. Judgments and how we label behaviours in our children and how we can reframe this. Using the term lazyness with our children and how reframing this can have powerful effects on all of us. Anger and how we can find the lessons in any situation. Being in survival mode as a mother and Dorka’s advice to mothers in the trenches Working on opposites in our motherhood journey. Patterns of behaviour and how we can use this as a journey inwards. How we can feel empowered in our motherhood journey. We often berate our bodies for letting us down when, in fact, symptoms can be messengers that we are not living in alignment with our mind, body and spirit. If we choose to neglect the whispers, they then turn into screams as our bodies will always find a way to be heard. This is Part 3 of the series of episodes on Why Women’s Health is Suffering and What You Can Do About It. This week Alison is looking at the deep need for sisterhood which, for many women, is an unmet need; we may not even consciously be aware that this is what our soul is crying out for. Alison talks about why we need women’s circles and how coming together with other women can fulfil a deep spiritual need. Women supporting women in this way and holding space for one another moves away from the patriarchal constructs towards the feminine - interconnection, vulnerability and relating to one another. How many of us really feel heard? Do you start a conversation and then find you are interrupted or the person listening is just biding their time until they can interject with their story or you are corrected, judged or criticised or showered with meaningless compliments? Meeting women in circle is not about fixing anything it is about bearing witness to the magical alchemy that occurs when women sit in circle. Episode #59 Gratitude in motherhood

This week Alison discusses what turned her life around as she went through her ‘motherhood awakening’ - gratitude. This is something Alison is very passionate about. Alison talks about why many mothers can find it challenging to cultivate a gratitude practice in motherhood and how we can reframe things to see what is before us, in any moment. This goes to the motherhood mindset Alison believes is so important to thrive as a mother. Gratitude is something that needs to be practiced everyday - it is a practice after all - the more we count our blessings the more blessings we become aware of. Alison gives tips on how you can cultivate a gratitude practice in motherhood for yourself and how to include it in your family rhythm so it is not just one more think on your to-do-list. It can be a way of being in the world which can create more joy and conscious awareness to you day. This is Part #1 of a series of posts on why women’s health is suffering. This week Alison talks about the inherent issue she sees with many clients in her clinic - they simply don’t value themselves enough to prioritise their own wellbeing. Alison talks about why our kids need to be mothered from a solid foundation and grounding. Self care is very much other-care; tending to ourselves so we can show up as a fulfilled WHOLE person so we can give from a joyous and abundant heart and not as an exhausted mama with a broken spirit. Alison has some homework for you to do this week to encourage you to prioritise your needs.     How to subscribe and review If you liked this episode of the Mothering the Mother Podcast, tell your friends, please! Episode #57 Identity transformation as a Mother

This week Alison discusses how as mothers we birth our new identity which is something largely disregarded in our culture. Mothers can be left to navigate this path on their own leaving them feeling disorientated and ungrounded. This episode asks you to look at the WHOLE you including your desires, passions and dreams, and how well you know yourself and respect yourself. This journey of discovery is so important to explore as you can’t give to your kids what you don’t give to yourself. Alison talks about the caterpillar metaphor to describe your changing self through giving birth to your new self. It is a messy yet beautiful journey of transformation. Alison is really passionate about this topic and invites you to remember yourself. Often we don’t really know ourselves. Motherhood shows us a mirror to ourselves like nothing else. But spending time really getting to know ourselves requires spaces, stillness and energy which is why our sisterhood is so important in this journey of motherhood.   How to subscribe and review If you liked this episode of the Mothering the Mother Podcast, tell your friends, please! Episode #51 Minimalism at Christmas with Beth Henson

About Beth Henson Beth Henson is a home schooling mother of 2 children and 4 years ago she embarked on a journey of minimalism in her family life and home and never looked back. Taken from Beth’s blog: “Two years ago, spurred on by an endless desire to gain more time with my family and for myself, I made the decision to simplify our lives. This in turn led to getting rid of 80% of our belongings and finding a better version of us. The us that was buried underneath all of our stuff, stuff that we later realised, we didn’t even want or need. The belongings in our home were taking up so much of my energy, energy that I didn’t have at the end of the day to play with my children, or focus on the things that I loved, there was always too much to do. Thanks to minimalism we now have the space and time to spend mostly as we please and this is by far the greatest gift that simplifying has given us.” Episode Highlights What minimalism means to Beth and her family. How minimalism can look different for everyone. Beth emphasises that minimalism is not always about having less and why this is. Beth’s advice on how to deal with well meaning relatives who may not be on board with minimalism. How Beth honours he NO. Beth talks about how experiences shared as a family have replaced things in their family Christmas. How to deal with children who want all the things - this is such a useful insight from Beth. If you are concerned that your kids will be disappointed with fewer gifts at Christmas, listen to Beth’s experience with her kids. What Alison discusses this week This week Alison discusses the reasons WHY we may be always hustling to get through our to-do-list. Alison looks at why our values can be more important than how many to-do-list items we strike through. She looks at how our choices can be made in alignment with our values to achieve a more fulfilling life. Alison covers how motherhood asks us to surrender to the flow of life and how that may be different to our masculine energies pre-children. She offers ways in which you can move away from a to-do-list to a to-BE list and how our motherhood mindset can be so important to our motherhood experience. Alison also discusses how we can make positive reframes of our to-do-lists that serve us rather than overwhelm us and introduces the Ta-Dah! List as an alternative to To-Do-List. What Alison discusses this week Alison discusses why we resist investing in ourselves when we know in our hearts we need to and want to. Alison looks at 3 main hurdles of resistance we often meet when we consider investing in ourselves time – so many of us use the words “we don't have time” or “it is not the right time”. Alison asks how can we afford (in a time sense) not to invest in ourselves? She explains why this may be in terms of coming from a position of fullness rather than emptiness and how this can benefit all of our family money – Alison talks about the difference between investing and spending and how this can make a huge difference in how we value the investment in ourselves as opposed to spending and how much we value ourselves which may underpin why we fall back on the first 2 reasons. What Alison discusses this week Alison discusses the research on the way people, particularly females, seem to deal with stress differently to the traditional fight or flight response - referred to as the ‘tend and befriend’ response. Alison refers to the importance of having our social support in motherhood and seeking out friendship in times of stress. Alison also gives tips about how you can cultivate a friendship group in motherhood and the importance of establishing nourishing connections, rather than just surface level friendships. Alison is passionate about supporting mothers so they are not doing motherhood alone and this episode goes to the heart of her work. About Tricia Goyer Tricia Goyer is a busy mom of ten, doting grandma, and wife to John. A USA Today bestselling author, Tricia has published seventy books and is a two-time Carol Award winner, as well as a Christy and ECPA Award Finalist. She won the Retailer Best Award in 2015 and has received starred reviews from Romantic Times and Publishers Weekly. She is also on the blogging team at TheBetterMom.com. USA Today bestselling author Tricia Goyer and her family of eleven embark on a yearlong quest to eliminate grumbling from their home and discover a healthier, more thankful approach to life together. The Goyer home--with two parents, eight kids, and one eighty-eight-year-old grandmother with dementia--is never without noise, mess, activity, and, often, complaining. And it's not just the kids grumbling. After adding seven children in less than six years through adoption, the Goyer family decided to move out of survival-mode and into unity- and growth-mode. They decided to tackle the impossible: a grumble-free year. With grade-schoolers, teenagers, and a grandmother who believes children should be seen and not heard, plenty of room exists for flunking the challenge. Add to that seven children being homeschooled together in close quarters, and what could possibly go awry? In The Grumble-Free Year, the Goyers invite readers into their journey as they go complaint-free and discover what it looks like to develop hearts of gratitude. They share their plans, successes, failures, and all the lessons they learn along the way, offering real-life action steps based in scripture so that readers get not just a front-row seat to the action but also an opportunity to take the challenge themselves and uncover hearts that are truly thankful. Episode highlights The root of grumbling. Understanding why Tricia started with herself. Why Tricia wanted to thrive as a family and not just survive. The impact of the grumble free year on her family life. Finding joy and peace. Showing ourselves kindness and forgiveness. Self care and prioritising your needs, Mama

What Alison discusses this week This is Alison’s first solo episode talking about self care when you feel you have no time. Often self care is pushed to some distant horizon …. maybe once the next milestone has passed in our baby’s development… when we go on holiday… when we have the headspace. This is all anticipatory. It is always in the future. The thing is, the longer we put ourselves to the bottom of the list or don’t even stick ourselves on our list, the more depleted we become. This manifests in feelings like being at the end of your rope, becoming hulk mum (hear me roar), starting to drop some of those juggling plates and on it continues while the overwhelm and anxiety grows. The time to prioritise your own health and wellbeing is NOW. Alison talks about why taking care of ourselves is so important and how we can build those micro moments of pause and creating our intentions around.
