360 Yourself!

In 1989, a 2-year-old Rhona Eskander and her Christian parents fled Saudia Arabia. With £10 left in their pocket, they sought refuge in the UK and worked in entry level medical positions before working their way up. Giving their ambitious child everything they could, these parents helped shape one of the UK's most successful medical professionals, Dr Rhona Eskander. Now CEO of one of London's most sought after dental practices, she's responsible for so many celebrity smiles from Rochelle Humes and Mel B to more NDA clients from the biggest Hollywood actors and humanitarians that could be put into an email. Founder of the fastest growing toothpaste company Pärla, Rhona's eco-friendly product is stocked everywhere from Boots to Sainsburys to Waitrose and has removed all the harmful stuff that's in our normal toothpaste that we don't know about. Dr Rhona's story is one of ambition, resilience, determination to fix medical injustices. Dr Rhona is everything a stereotypical medical professional isn't who's had a dream of becoming a dentist since aged 12. Rhona has created a dental empire, without the Dragon's Den 30% equity offer that she turned down on Pärla, and is using her position to fix the deeply flawed system where huge injustices exist. From un-regulated online braces and teeth whitening practices, to the Turkey Teeth trend, the lack of knowledge surrounding dentistry is putting people's teeth and lives at risk where there's a direct relationship in the sky rocketing gum disease and tooth decay issues to health conditions such as diabetes, infection and heart disease. In a time where 90% of dentists are not taking on new NHS patients, the psychological impact of bad teeth and dental hygiene means people are searching for cheaper methods, often putting their safety at risk. Rhona provides free treatment for those that have no more options, recently stepping in to save a woman's life who had botched dental treatment in Turkey. She speaks out on the lack of access to dentistry, having struggled to get in herself due to prejudices against her eccentric style where she wasn't taken seriously. Initially working in a demoralising NHS system, she moved to a struggling private clinic, gave it an overhaul, and turned it into a successful business. Not afraid to put her head above the parapet, she's fascinating, is making a difference, genuinely cares about the issues in the industry that affect us all. Nick and Angela welcome presenter and proud Northerner, Vernon Kay. Grimmy and Vernon first met when they presented T4 together back in their TV heydays, and later found themselves on back-to-back, on Saturday mornings on BBC Radio 1 - very challenging time slots for their active social lives.  Vernon Kay is best known for iconic TV shows including All Star Family Fortunes, Just the Two of Us and Splash. In 2020 he appeared on I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, and recently has been covering on This Morning alongside Rochelle Humes. He has switched early morning radio for a late-night show, Dance Sounds of the 90s on BBC Radio 2 and regularly covers Zoe Ball's breakfast show, where he interviewed Nick and Angela when they launched Dish back in June. He is a big red meat fan, so Angela prepares a rich and creamy steak stroganoff, with a mushroom and onion sauce. Nick pours the wine, a delicate Gaia Organic Malbec. In this episode, we hear about Vernon's glory days as a model, his pro tips for barbecuing with your mates, and how he managed to sneak a burner phone into I'm A Celeb! How do you deal with one of your parents starting a new family? Today's guest is the presenter and businesswoman Rochelle Humes who had to tackle this very question when she discovered later in life that she had siblings through her estranged Dad. Rochelle challenges the ‘half' labels for her siblings and talks fondly of the roles ‘aunties' have played both in her family and wider in black communities to prove you can choose who you see as your family. Kate and Rochelle also talk about what they've noticed from being part of mixed race blended families exploring questions such as why aren't we educated on how to cut and nourish black hair? How do we make sure our children can fully explore and understand their cultures in a blended family? How early do you broach the important subject of racism with children? Kate and Rochelle's conversation takes plenty of interesting detours through motherhood, race and iidentity and the need to challenge the conventions of how a family ‘should' look. In these ‘Moment' episodes of my podcast, I'll be selecting my favourite moments from previous episodes of The Diary Of A CEO. This week, I have chosen a clip from my episode with Rochelle Humes, who spoke to me so openly about her life, chasing the highest goals like never before. Rochelle has been performing professionally and presenting television since she was in school, and is also the entrepreneur behind innovative hair and skincare brand My Little Coco. Rochelle found success by being true to herself, and following her instincts. We all know this can be hard to do, so here we talk about how to make those decisions easier. The 51% theory is something that I learnt off Barack Obama at a talk we both did in Brazil. It comes down to if we are always looking for 100% of the facts, data and certainty to get our decisions over the line, it leads to huge procrastination and time-wasting. Getting to that 51% is a much more efficient system, and it reassures us that it will be the right decision to make. She has had the privilege of working with hundreds of families. Recorded: 08/02/2021Black Women have been the backbone of the NHS, the NHS was built on the back and sweat of Black Women. Reading the statistics in the UK, Black Women are 5 times more likely to die during childbirth, the statistics are chilling. To explore this without using Black Women as the mouth-piece undermines the Black Woman experience and erases our experiences. It is beyond me and incomprehensible how a mixed-race woman - Rochelle Humes who is more palatable to her white audience having proximity to whiteness and access to private health care can ever explore, understand, narrate and deliver the experiences that Black Women have had at the hands of the health care system.Medical racism has sought to negligent and mistreats Black Women ignoring that we also feel pain instead our very existence is filled with trauma and tales of the health care system placing no value on our lives. We are often made to feel that our very existence is intrinsic to pain. Why are all our experiences the same or similar..... because the health care system fails Black Women and we have the statistics and the experiences to prove it.Candice Braithwaite has been advocating for Black Women raising awareness of the mistreatment of Black Women during childbirth. Candice has done the leg work she has invested knowledge and created awareness in the Black community. Instead of her telling her story and many of ours, it's Rochelle Humes a privileged bi-racial woman who represents a different statistic and has now centered herself in delivering a documentary about Black Women.Rochelle Humes asked in a recent Instagram post announcing her role in delivering this documentary that she wants our opinion, so in this episode, I give her mine.
