Stephen Minch Interview

Conversations With Close

In this installment of Conversations with Close, my guest is the man who, as a writer, editor, and/or publisher, is responsible for many of the most important magic texts published in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. If you have read, studied, enjoyed, and benefitted from books like The Vernon Chronicles, The Collected Works of Alex Elmsley, Carneycopia, the Card College series (in English), The Books of Wonder, and Mnemonica (in English), you can thank Stephen Minch. I was well aware of Stephen's prowess as a writer when we met for the first time in 1992 at an Ibidem convention held at the Old Stone Inn in Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario; we hit it off immediately. Although our paths don't cross that often, I always enjoy the time we spend together. He is a fascinating individual. The reason for our interview is the soon-to-be-released book, Flamenco, featuring magic by the maestro, Juan Tamariz (see the review in the Jan 2025 Michael Close Newsletter). The book has been in the pipeline since 1995; Stephen gives us the backstory, plus fascinating reminiscences of Mickey Hades, Doug Henning, Martin Nash, Alex Elmsley, and Tommy Wonder. I think you'll really enjoy listening to one of the true giants in the history of magic publishing.

A strange week for York United FC. On Tuesday it was announced that Martin Nash would no longer be continuing as Head Coach of the club and with the next league fixture set for Friday night at York Lions Stadium, Mauro Eustáquio will take interim charge. We hear from GM and President Ricardo Pasquel and get his take on the decision, the process and what the remainder of the 2024 campaign will look like for The Nine Stripes.  There's also an emotional interview with Mauro Eustáquio, who provides some insight on a whirlwind few weeks. With the recent loss of his father, he's still coming to terms with some personal tragedy but is focused on what's ahead and believes the squad will carry extra motivation to deliver a big result against HFX Wanderers. Produced by York United Football Club.  For all the latest news, including ticketing information and official merchandise, follow York United FC across our social channels.Instagram: @YorkUtdFCTikTok: @YorkUtdFCTwitter/X: @YorkUtdFCFacebook: @York United Football Club

Eoin O'Callaghan is back to bask in the glory of a 3-1 home win last time out against Valour FC. Goals from Noah Abetneh, Brian Wright and Mo Babouli sealed a special comeback victory at York Lions Stadium, which made it back-to-back home wins and six goals accumulated in those two fixtures. We get the thoughts of an upbeat Martin Nash and Max Ferrari , who continued his great start to the season with another fine individual display. Later, Nash sits down for an in-depth conversation and details the highs, lows and everything in between of the campaign so far. There was a little break from the show last week due to a Wednesday cup clash with the club's nearest and dearest rivals Forge FC but host Eoin O'Callaghan is back to review a busy stretch of action. The trip to Hamilton proved a disappointing experience as The Nine Stripes were left dazed and confused by an astonishing first half that ultimately cost them dearly.  Despite a solid fightback after the break and a first goal for the club for midfielder Josue Martinez, the 3-1 defeat meant elimination from the tournament. We get the thoughts of Martin Nash and Elijah Adekugbe before delving into the trip to Victoria last weekend as the team attempted to rebound with their second league win of the season. However, it proved another frustrating game and the 2-0 loss led to some strong words from Nash post-game, while defender Frank Sturing spoke at length about the performance.Later in the show, Eoin is joined by Mitchell Tierney from CanPL.ca to discuss York's recent performances, the players that have settled in well this season and Friday's huge battle with Valour FC at York Lions Stadium.Produced by York United Football Club.First broadcast on Sauga960AM on May 8th, 2024.     For all the latest news, including ticketing information and official merchandise, follow York United FC across our social channels.Instagram: @YorkUtdFCTikTok: @YorkUtdFCTwitter/X: @YorkUtdFCFacebook: @York United Football Club

Two games in quick succession - culminating in that thrilling win over league leaders Cavalry FC - ensures a hectic show this week.   It had been a well-documented tough run of results for The Nine Stripes and even though last Friday's performance against reigning champions Pacific FC was much-improved, the 4-2 loss was a bitter pill to swallow. Still, there were plenty of positives. Isaiah Johnston was one of them, conjuring two assists and delivering a powerful individual display. We hear from the 20-year-old midfielder on his development this season and why there's still plenty of optimism in the camp. Ahead of the trip to Calgary, Martin Nash said that every streak comes to an end eventually. And what prophetic words they were. It was a Herculean performance against the red-hot hosts and we get the thoughts of our proud Head Coach as well as goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulos, who was crucial in the 1-0 victory. Eoin is also joined by Charlie O'Connor-Clarke from CanPL.ca to discuss the most recent performances, what it means for the rest of the season and what it will take to make the play-offs. The show is produced by York United Football Club and this episode was originally broadcast on Sauga960AM.          For all the latest news, including ticketing information and official merchandise, follow York United FC across our social channels.Instagram: @YorkUtdFCTikTok: @YorkUtdFCTwitter/X: @YorkUtdFCFacebook: @York United Football Club

We're back with another packed episode of the AFTN Soccer Show for your listening pleasure, with lots of Vancouver Whitecaps, MLS, and World Cup chat. What a busy week of football news it's been, with perhaps the most exciting news of all being the official confirmation that Vancouver will be a host city for the 2026 World Cup. We look at what that means for the city, both short and long term, chat about affordability versus future returns, and get the thoughts of Whitecaps CEO and Sporting Director Axel Schuster about what it will mean for the club and the place he now calls home. It's also been a big week for Major League Soccer, who announced a billion dollar 10 year streaming deal with Apple TV+. How good is the deal for the league? How good is it for a club like the Whitecaps? Will it be a game changer or will it turn off the casual fans? We chat about all of that and more, plus we hear the thought of Axel Schuster. The Whitecaps were in action twice this past week with road games against Seattle and Dallas and what contrasting performances they were from the ridiculous to the sublime. We pick over the bones of both and look at where Vancouver's three point haul leaves them in the playoff picture. They've now got a big Canadian Championship semi-final coming up on Wednesday night against CPL side York United. We look ahead to that one and chat with their head coach, former Whitecap Martin Nash. We also look at the good form of WFC2 and chat with their latest two-goal hero Theo Collomb. Plus music from artists of the month Thick and The Abnormal are in this episode's Wavelength. Here's the rundown for the main segments from the episode: 02.53: The 2022 World Cup is all set 10.50: The World Cup is coming to Vancouver 28.10: Axel Schuster interview - part one 46.06: MLS get slice of Apple pie in new streaming deal 58.40: Axel Schuster interview - part two 75.40: Whitecaps v Seattle and Dallas - a tale of two cities 104.52: Canadian Championship semi-final preview feat Martin Nash 112.36: WFC2 round up 116.20: Theo Collomb interview 120.26: Wavelength - The Abnormal - Football Song

A busy schedule means the games are coming thick and fast. Eoin O'Callaghan gets the latest reaction following a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Atletico Ottawa in the Canadian Championship on Tuesday night. We're back with another packed episode of the AFTN Soccer Show for your listening pleasure, and it's a special Canadian Premier League themed show ahead of the new season that gets underway on Thursday. In this episode, we continue our chats with head coaches from around the league and bring you three feature interviews, from three teams with very different expectations this season. We kick things off with the champs, as we sit down with new Pacific FC head coach James Merriman to chat about defending their title, the comings and goings in an eventful offseason, fighting on three fronts, and more. It's also been an eventful offseason for FC Edmonton, and not one you'd wish on any coach. With the team looking for new owners, the playing and management team decimated, and the league taking over the team and providing loan players, head coach Alan Koch has certainly had his work cut out for him. We chat with him about all the turmoil, building a squad, and what we can expect from the team this year both on and off the pitch. Continuing to move east, we end up at York United to chat with another new head coach, and a man we know very well here in Vancouver, Martin Nash. Nash has moved too York after three years as an assistant at Cavalry. Can he take the team forward after they reached the playoffs for the first time? What will a Martin Nash team look like on the pitch? And how has he found the adjustment to being the main man in the dugout? We talk about all of that and more. Plus a quick discussion about all the teams in our season preview, some AFTN CPL power rankings, and Armchair Loyal are back in this episode's Wavelength. Here's the rundown for the main segments from the episode: 02.10: James Merriman interview 36.06: Alan Koch interview 69.33: Martin Nash interview 91.40: Pacific FC discussion 104.36: FC Edmonton discussion 110.00: York United discussion 114.40: CPL season preview and power rankings 125.47: Wavelength - Armchair Loyal - Young Gifted and Right Back

They went team by team, starting out east with HFX Wanderers and finishing on the west coast with the champs Pacific FC, breaking down what's new with each of the CPL's eight clubs and hearing from the head coaches and key players from each team. KJ and Charlie start with the Wanderers (8:19) and hear from Stephen Hart and João Morelli. They move on to a new-look Atlético Ottawa side (22:37) and chat with Carlos González and Nathan Ingham before heading to York United (40:11) as Martin Nash and Max Ferrari share their thoughts on the Nine Stripes in 2022. Bobby Smyrniotis and Tristan Borges appear to chat about Forge FC (56:04), followed by a segment on Valour FC featuring Phillip Dos Santos and returning defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste (1:14:44). They head to Alberta next to talk about an intriguing FC Edmonton side and hear from both Alan Koch and Shamit Shome (1:29:28), then move on to their Al Classico foes Cavalry FC as Tommy Wheeldon Jr. and Elijah Adekugbe appear to share their outlook on the new season (1:42:50). We look back at the Canadian Championship loss to Cavalry and the hard-fought goalless MLS draw in Minnesota, chat about the clear problems present, the messages sent, and what this Whitecaps team are going to look like for the rest of the season. We have an in-depth chat with 'Caps head coach Marc Dos Santos about his future plans for turning the team around, from this transfer window to what promises to be an intense offseason ahead. We also chat with Whitecaps striker Theo Bair about breaking into the first team and heading off the MLS Homegrown game, and talk to two Cavalry FC members with Whitecaps connections - Martin Nash and Marco Carducci. Plus we look at the week's action around MLS and Vanilla Muffins return in Wavelength. Despite the doom and gloom surrounding the 'Caps we have another fun filled show for you. Episode # 9.0 of THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID finds both Matt and Ian locked in the conference room of life, just trying to finish the Junior Jumble. Gird your loins folks, there's a fox in the henhouse, and his name is Martin Nash... this hardened ex-con is spreading his anti-office propaganda, and Michael refuses to stand for it... and not just because he's black. Do the jammers in the room have reason to celebrate, or is jim just being a dick? The very worst thing about this episode of TWSS? The dementors. They hoit!
