In 1883, Missouri real estate broker James Reavis announced that he held title to a huge tract of land in the Arizona Territory. If certified, the claim would threaten the livelihoods of thousands of residents. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the story of the Baron of Arizona, one of the most audacious frauds in American history. We'll also scrutinize British statues and puzzle over some curious floor numbers. Intro: In 1891, Charles Dodgson wrote a curiously unforthcoming letter to Nellie Bowman. Psychcast host Lorenzo Norris, MD, talks with members of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry’s Media Committee about how to help patients navigate the uncertainties associated with educating K-12 and college students during the pandemic. The discussion is moderated by Jack Drescher, MD. Dr. Norris is assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and assistant dean of student affairs at George Washington University in Washington. He also serves as medical director of psychiatric and behavioral sciences at George Washington University Hospital. Dr. Norris has no conflicts of interest. Dr. Drescher is clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University in New York, adjunct professor at New York University, and a training and supervising psychoanalyst at the William Alanson White Institute. He has no conflicts of interest.  Joining Dr. Norris and Dr. Drescher are Carol Bernstein, MD; Jeffrey Freedman, MD; Gail Saltz, MD; and Peter Kramer, MD. None of the guests have a conflict of interest. Summary Questions about school reopenings are fraught with uncertainty for children, parents, and teachers, with concerns for safety as well as the quality of the school experience. Constant communication between parents and schools with families is warranted; however, without a clear plan, too much communication can generate anxiety. The pandemic and school reopenings affect most sectors of society, including the economy, and vulnerable and elderly populations. The pandemic puts pressure on families because the distribution of work often is in the home. Women in particular are struggling with the ongoing need to manage work demands with those tied to their children’s school schedules. School reopening plans have ramifications for the workplace as parents struggle to meet their usual schedule and productivity standards. School reopening is another aspect of the pandemic that underscores class and financial disparities, because some school systems can afford widespread testing to keep children in school. These decisions, in turn, have a ripple effect on parents' ability to return to work. School reopenings also affect young adults at colleges and universities. The social milieu of college targets the development of young adults as they accomplish social and emotional milestones by interacting with peers. Yet, to reopen safely, colleges have been forced to change their structure and limit social interactions between students and faculty. In addition, college is a common time and place for mental illnesses to surface or be exacerbated in young people; it’s unclear whether there will be enough mental health services for this group, which is now under even more stress. Colleges are trying to fill the mental health gap by using adjunctive tools, such as apps, and broader telehealth and virtual psychotherapy services. Children at every age are facing developmental challenges, including a "failure to launch." Presently, 52% of young adults reside with one or both of their parents, the largest proportion since the Great Depression.   References Bushwick S. On Christmas night in 1843, a horrific crime rattled Staten Island. Within days, suspicion attached itself to one woman. Decades before Lizzie Borden gained notoriety, this young woman was accused of a horrific crime and dubbed the "Witch of Staten Island." Have you ever heard of Polly Bodine? Opening Banter: Our usual Monday Watercooler episode will happen tomorrow instead due to our usual contributors being away.   In The Mail Bag: Last week we talked briefly about the worst films we've seen this year (so far) and asked if there were any that we missed. Here are your responses: Brian from Wichita, Kansas says “As a huge horror movie fan, there have been some spectacular experiences in 2018 such as A Quiet Place, some disappointments like Winchester and some rotten apples like Truth or Dare.   This being said, I give the RottenPasta award to Slender Man.  So much urban legend potential to bring this story to life but alas, this movie has weak dialogue, bland cinematography and worst of all, it isn't scary.   My biggest disappointment of the year so far.“ Matt from Connecticut says “I saw SUPERFLY with my MoviePass. What a steaming pile. Amateurish, terribly written and acted, with the most ridiculous, adolescent fantasy sex scene I've ever seen. Pure garbage.” Chase D from Ohio says “ So I just checked my Letterboxd diary for 2018 and it is telling me that I've seen 99 movies already... wow. Haha. 78 unique movies, and these are the ones I scored a 4/10 or worse:  - Proud Mary - Death Wish - The 15:17 to Paris - A Wrinkle in Time - Super Troopers 2 - Overboard - Life of the Party - Action Point And the winner of the worst scored movie of 2018 (so far) for me, with a 2/10, was Gotti. And I will be honest and say that the score is biased. It was filmed in my hometown, I worked on it, and I even was a background extra and made it into the final cut! So.. a 2/10 is probably too high, but I saw myself on a movie screen so sue me.

1 August 2016 - It is always glorious when we can have the well-known banking expert, economics wonk and blogger, Frances Coppola on the show. We were thrilled to welcome her back this week to talk about threats to the independence of central banks. We also discussed her recent panel at the Financial Times Festival of Finance where she consistently pointed out that the rise in populism expressed both through the Brexit vote and in the Trump candidacy, is all about the local. Will and I had a lot of fun at the top of the show where he reveled in the number of GOP pundits who had to admit they loved the Democratic National Convention and I revealed what is, perhaps, the single most important polling result of this election cycle. Will then goes on to tear into what we know (and what we don't) about the relationships between Donald Trump, members of his campaign staff, Julian Assange, Vladimir Putin and various Russian surrogates and agencies. The word "traitor" does indeed come to mind. Seriously. I spend my time on an overview of the economy of India, the modernization efforts and challenges and a bit about the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) including its recent upheaval. Since the soon-to-be former Governor of the RBI may very well be the incoming head of the IMF, after Lagarde steps down later this year, it's worth getting to know a bit more about him. Rughuram Rajan is a neoliberal economist but he is also extremely accomplished, qualified and would be a much stronger voice for developing nations. In spite of Trump, this has been a great week to be a Democrat and Will and I are still in the post-convention glow. In the next 100 days this country may well rise or fall. Let's get to work. Carrots! - Arliss

Into every generation, an episode of Cthulhu on Parade! is born. Will you pass on the legacy to your own children someday? Perhaps, in the meantime, we may discuss such things as the endless nature of time. Were one to become unstuck in it, what actions would one take? In this frightening grounded episode, we explore the effects of temporal traversal on three brave souls, each hoping that the next leap will be the one that takes them home at last. Also, Will M guest-edited this episode. Oh, wait, and did I mention that this entire thing is a game that our very own Sam made? I guess I didn't, and I know that I didn't, and were I to become unstuck in time, I would surely hope to travel back to the moments before writing this and set right this terrible wrong. But, alas, we must move ever onward in time, and look only to the fantastic fiction of these three strange sojourners, wondering what we would will to existence in their place. For many years, mankind has believed itself to be the dominant form of life on the planet, but no more! Yes, on this day in the 1920s (sometime) a shocking revelation was made! In the course of a routine investigation, two cops stumble upon a mysterious happening in a rural locale, but this time, there's teens! And the police work is stellar. INTERSTELLAR? I'm saying that maybe the things involved could be to do with space. I dunno it's a real secret unless you read the name of the episode or the Call of Cthulhu rulebook at any point, but we put a few new spins on the old classic, such as incompetence. Also I called out an iTunes review I was annoyed about, because that's the kind of egomaniac I've become. Featuring: Will B as Keeper of Arcane Lore. Stephen as Deputy Robert Mayor, a detective of extreme verisimilitude. Will M as Officer Opie Plum, who works together with Deputy Mayor, knowing him extremely well, including his name. Book your tickets! A brand new episode of Cthulhu on Parade has risen from the depths to challenge your entire philosophy on update schedules, a bold new artform only matched by the sheer talent on display by our glorious heroes. Yes, the rumours are true and this episode features a brand new player never-before-heard on this podcast. Who will it be? Why, the only way to find out is to listen! Or, scroll down and see on the featuring list I guess. But what will they sound like? So anyway in this episode we played Transatlantic, a Fiasco playset, and referenced Too Many Cooks a lot, to the extent where within a month (this episode was recorded a month ago almost exactly) some things may feel outdated. But also, it's kinda like Titanic? And that's a timeless classic/historical event. My point is that there's layers here. Also it's pretty funny. So, listen to it maybe? This episode was edited by Stephen. Featuring: Sarah as Anastasia Steele, a bold young woman with revenge on her horizon. Stephen as Steven Popkes/Poptarts, steward on the rise, a dangerous man. Join us this evening on a four-and-a-quarter hour journey into the soul of man. When colluding forces bring together a band of misfits (eventually, because for the first while it's kinda hard to get them into a room together due to poor planning on my part) – what fine discoveries shall they make in a bold new archaeological dig, which is definitely very interesting? Everyone's talking about this hill. This hill with weird earthworks? You – you gotta listen, man. This hill. You've never heard anything like it. There's all kinds of historical artefacts getting uncovered. And our bold adventurers are gonna uncover them, and – and take a look at them, and like, take a couple guesses as to what might be going on. Then they're gonna go get drunk. All for two pounds a day! This episode is an extra-special GUESTRAVAGANZA, with special guests such as Austin & Al from The Film Room Podcast (@FilmRoomCast on Twitter, and check it out at http://thefilmroom.podbean.com/) to say nothing of returning champion JJ Hawkins (@JJHawkins) of Mars Needs Podcasts fame (and a couple others over at http://www.TheWebsiteOfDoom.com) – and last but not least, a very special guest appearance from a loudly whining dog for much of the last hour, for which I can only apologize. I almost forgot to mention, this episode features a staggering lack of knowledge on my part about the geography of basically anything. Uh, sorry? Featuring: Will B as Keeper of Arcane Lore. Al as Garry Trudeau, local law enforcement. No relation. Well, maybe some I guess? Austin as Andrew Whitchurch, professional labourer, if you can dig that. He can. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZksjDV6txE In this episode of China Money Podcast, guest Bob Partridge, managing partner of transaction advisory services at Ernest & Young, explains why it is a good time for overseas institutional investors to invest in China's private equity right now, and what is in store for the industry next year. Listen to the full-interview in the audio podcast, watch the shortened video version, or read a transcript summary. Q: China's private equity industry is in a challenging position right now with a large capital overhang and difficult exit channels. Some are calling for an industry consolidation. What's your view? A: There are a lot of concerns going on in the public markets right now, and that's driving activities on both sides of the deal picture. On exits, there are certainly lower opportunities for private equity to exit. But on investing side, it creates better valuation opportunities. As a result, we are seeing a mixture of expected lower valuations, and the old problem that we always have in this market, that sellers always want to hold out as long as they can before they recognize changes in valuations. But overall, deal volume and fundraising are up, so it's not a bad time to invest in PE in China. Q: How has fundraising and deal volume been? A: In the first quarter, we had a good quarter. The second quarter, fundraising came down on concerns of what RMB funds really mean for the industry. In fact, last year, all the funds raised are unrealistic. The most recent quarter, deal volumes are up 9%. Because we see things before they become public, I can say deal pipelines are very strong. We predict that the third quarter will be up slightly because of the summer months. The fourth quarter, deal volume will continue to go up. Overall, total dollars deal volume will be up in 2012 year-on-year. Q: The somewhat strange phenomenon in the Chinese markets now is that valuations in the public markets are lower than private markets. What does that mean for investors? A: There is lots of insanity out here. It's easy to zero in on some high valuation deals. But a lot of things here aren't as transparent as New York or London. Entrepreneurs expect high valuations, when they hear a public deal getting done at 20-times multiple, for example, they think their company should be worth at least 21 times. So you have mixtures of exaggerated reporting and embellishment of what the real valuations are. But in general, we are seeing valuations are coming down on a historical perspective. Q: Exiting has been the most challenging part for private equity this year. Will M&A and secondaries really emerge as viable alternatives? A: If you look at seasoned international private equity investors, they all position their companies for a variety of exits. That's happening now in greater China. Private equity investors are not desperate to sell unless their fund life requires them to do so, which is not really the majority of the funds. Private equity here are buttoning down and trying to create value at their portfolio companies. They are looking at next year (for exits). So for the time being, they are thinking what can we do to close out 2012 as strongly as possible, clean up corporate governance, expand channels and improve profitability. Of course, that's also positioning the company for trade sales. Secondaries are developing. Clearly, it will increase this year and next year. Some of the secondaries that were done are long-time held investments where the GPs really have to close down and return to LPs. Q: There are lots of uncertainties now in China's macroeconomic outlook, and companies are more prudent on M&A. Will we really see more M&A deal? A: M&A will probably be soft compared to last year, as companies are staying more prudent. Next year, with Europe's situations improving, the U.S. elections over, and China's inflation coming down,
