We celebrate Free Comic Book Day with Jesse Lonergan and Steve Anderson from Third Eye Comics. Our first-ever spectacular promoting the annual event where comic readers collide to nab free comics but, more importantly, buy comics. Free Comic Book Day is a shop appreciation day, not a customer appreciation day. So, be kind, say thank you, and discover a new universe of titles and characters. Exploration is your mission. In our first portion, we chat extensively with Steve Anderson about his new Buys and Bargains Third Eye Comics location in Annapolis, Maryland. What purpose does this particular store offer that the others don't? What goodies did we come away with during our little shop preview? What does the retailer of one of the country's best comic shops think about the industry today, and what are the comics he's most excited to read? We get into it. In our second half, we speak with cartoonist extraordinaire Jesse Lonergan about his new Mike Mignola collaboration, Miss Truesdale and the Fall of Hyperborea, published by Dark Horse Comics. For Hellboy fans, this is an essential entry, further detailing the ancient mythology that frequently steers Anung Un Rama's fate. We discuss the responsibility of working with such precious characters and why Lonergan was such a natural fit. We also get into the weeds of pacing, time, and who controls what within the comics medium. It's another can't-miss conversation. There are few days of the year we enjoy more than Free Comic Book Day. We all owe a lot to Joe Field, the Flying Colors comic shop proprietor who originated the concept. If you would like to know more about the event's origins, be sure to listen to The Short Box podcast. The latest episode features an extensive interview with Field. You should also check out the Comic Book Couples Counseling Free Comic Book Day PSA! Most importantly, visit Third Eye Comics! Follow them on Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok. You can also keep track of Jesse Lonergan on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. Wait, there's more! You should listen to our other Mignolaverse celebration with creators Rob Williams and Warwick Johnson-Cadwell. FINAL ROUND OF PLUGS (PHEW): Also, JOIN OUR PATREON and watch Brad and Dolph Lundgren celebrate 1989's The Punisher movie for seven whole minutes. Don't forget! Seed of Destruction and Wake the Devil would pave the way for years of storytelling in the Mignolaverse. Listen to Zach and guest, Sam Weynat discuss how the beloved Dark Horse comic from Mike Mignola got its start, before going on to be two very successful movies starring Ron Pearlman and directed by Guillermo Del Toro...and one less successful film starring David Harbour.---------------------------------------------------Join the Patreon to help us keep the lights on, and internet connected!https://www.patreon.com/tctwlWant to try out all the sweet gigs over on Fiverr.com? This week on Creannotators, I talk Falconspeare with writer and artist Warwick Johnson-Cadwell. We talk about being a part of Mike Mignola’s Mignolaverse, balancing humor and drama with vampire hunters, and favorite old monster movies! On Comic Book Herald’s ‘Creannotators' I’ll be interviewing some of my favorite creators in comics about specific runs, graphic novels or series, […] The post Creannotators #74: “Falconspeare” with writer/artist Warwick Johnson-Cadwell! appeared first on Comic Book Herald.
This week, comic creators Rob Williams and Warwick Johnson-Cadwell join us to discuss their new contributions to The Mignolaverse, The Sword of Hyperborea and Falconspeare. They're both incredible comics, totally different from each other, but they absolutely belong together within Mike Mignola's apocalyptic landscape. The Mignolaverse commands a very special corner within the Love Nest. Mike Mignola's Hellboy comics were the first comics Brad ever put into Lisa's hands. It was an insane, and maybe foolish, risk - what if she didn't love them? Thankfully, she said yes...they are the greatest comics ever, and their relationship continued. It was only a matter of time before these stories were celebrated on Comic Book Couples Counseling, and we're thrilled to have this party with Rob Williams and Warwick Johnson-Cadwell in attendance. And we get the impression that they're just as thrilled to be celebrating Mike Mignola as we are. The Sword of Hyperborea is out now from Dark Horse Comics, and Falconspeare will hit shelves on 1/25. While you wait, however, what don't you nab Johnson-Cadwell's Mr. Higgins Comes Home and Our Encounters With Evil. If you need further convincing, read Lisa's glowing Falconspeare review over on Comics Bookcase. And, don't forget to check out our previous conversation with Rob Williams, talking about Judge Dredd: End of Days. Be sure to find Rob on Twitter HERE, Instagram HERE, and visit his official website HERE. And you can do the same thing for Warwick Johnson-Cadwell by smashing follow on his Twitter HERE and Instagram HERE. Mind MGMT by Matt Kindt is an exceptional comic in many ways. We discuss those many ways in this episode. We take a pit stop at the Mignolaverse on the way, with some Hellboy and BPRD discussion.- Do you remember the first time you started following a comics creator, rather than a comic title? The comics window-shopping continues! Flipping to the front of the catalog, Mike & Greg's attention focuses on the Premier Publishers section: Dark Horse! DC! Image! IDW! Marvel! What's coming to comic shops in May from these companies that catches the lads' fancies? How about what Image is cooking up? Terrible joke, but really, there's a cooking comic on the horizon. Then, of course, there's the transatlantic madness of 2000 AD's D'Israeli wading into the Mignolaverse. All that, plus Greg's underwhelming response to IDW's latest Artist's Edition, boundless jubilation for Jim Rugg comics, and even some kind words about Marvel. From both hosts! Definitely something for everyone as the guys close out their trip through the March “Previews” catalog! Robots From Tomorrow is a weekly comics podcast recorded deep beneath the Earth's surface. Another “Previews” in the pullbox means another look into our comics future! With focus shifting to the Premier section, what impending January 2017 releases catch Mike & Greg's eyes from Diamond's top-tier publishers? The Quintessential Transformers vs G. I. Joe! Monsters Unleashed! Loose Ends (finally)! More Dark Horse vs DC! Kamandi Challenge! All that, plus David Finch and the opposite of absurd, the increasing skill of Erica Henderson, hearing the ticking clock on creator runs, Paul Grist's stay in the Mignolaverse, which pages from Marvel's Previews catalog will Mike look at every time he needs a comics recharge, how can Marvel do exactly what Greg tells them to and STILL not satisfy him, and more as the lads wrap up their look at November's “Previews” catalog! For today's episode we welcome writer John Arcudi back to the show! Next week will see the release of John's final issue of "B.P.R.D," which comes after a dozen years of writing the title. With such a long stretch of work behind him, we figured now would be the perfect time to invite him back on the show for a look back at how we got here. This is a conversation in two parts, with this episode focusing on John's work outside of the Mignolaverse. From "Doom Partol" to "Major Bummer" and "A God Somewhere," John's written an incredible amount of comics and has worked at just about every major publisher. We even get into his non-writing comics work as an editor and archivist, as well as his earliest published works. If you missed John the last time he was on, you can catch that one right here. And don't forget to come back next week for part 2 of the conversation when we devote the entire episode to John's "B.P.R.D." conclusion!
