Is group fitness helping or hurting your body composition goals? In this Fitness Friday episode on the Habits and Hustle podcast, Liron and I dive into the controversial world of group fitness classes like Orange Theory, Barry's Bootcamp, and F45. We discuss why these high-intensity classes can spike your appetite, burn out your adrenals, and leave you injured—plus what's actually working in the group fitness space. We also explore the rise of Hyrox as a better alternative to CrossFit, why Pilates shouldn't be your only workout, and the social benefits that keep people coming back despite the drawbacks. Liron Kayvan founded BFLA in 2019. He's a NASM Certified Group Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer, and Transformative Life Coach. Liron has competed in Amateur MMA, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Rugby and has been a Fitness Coach for over 10 years. What we discuss: The rise and reality of group fitness popularity Why Barry's Bootcamp can spike cortisol and appetite The "aimless running around" problem in most classes Hyrox vs. CrossFit: A safer group fitness alternative Why Pilates alone won't change your body composition The social benefits that make group fitness worthwhile When group fitness works vs. when it backfires The importance of having specific fitness goals Why "something is better than nothing" still applies How to choose group fitness that actually serves your goals Thank you to our sponsor: Therasage: Head over to therasage.com and use code Be Bold for 15% off  TruNiagen: Head over to truniagen.com and use code HUSTLE20 to get $20 off any purchase over $100. One of my favorite clients ever is here to share a bit about her story inside the Yummy Mummy Experience!Liron joins me on the pod today from her home in Kansas City where she lives with her husband and two kids and I know you're going to relate to her prior struggle with weighing what she wanted.“In the grand scheme of things, I just wanted to lose 10-15 pounds, but it was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. When I did things like Noom, I would do it in six to eight weeks and then go on vacation, or something would happen (good or bad) and I didn't have the tools to not give up. So then it became a vicious cycle for two years.”Liron had been listening to THIS podcast for eight months when she finally decided to join the Yummy Mummy cohort this past January. “It's a village of people who are like-minded, who are all successful in their own right, who need cheerleaders behind them to get this done. It's a way to do something that's hard but do it with others who really uplift you and support you.”Hop in on our conversation and hear straight from Liron about:Why Yummy Mummy is different for your weight loss than going it aloneHow she learned not to give up on herself anymoreThe safety and sisterhood Liron found in the Yum Mum communityWhat pleasantly surprised her about joining Yum Mum and how it compares to ‘diets'Weighing what you want to weigh is a skill, which means it's something you can learn. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Robin Hanson AI X-Risk Debate - Highlights and Analysis, published by Liron on July 13, 2024 on LessWrong. This linkpost contains a lightly-edited transcript of highlights of my recent AI x-risk debate with Robin Hanson, and a written version of what I said in the post-debate analysis episode of my Doom Debates podcast. Introduction I've poured over my recent 2-hour AI x-risk debate with Robin Hanson to clip the highlights and write up a post-debate analysis, including new arguments I thought of after the debate was over. I've read everybody's feedback on YouTube and Twitter, and the consensus seems to be that it was a good debate. There were many topics brought up that were kind of deep cuts into stuff that Robin says. On the critical side, people were saying that it came off more like an interview than a debate. I asked Robin a lot of questions about how he sees the world and I didn't "nail" him. And people were saying I wasn't quite as tough and forceful as I am on other guests. That's good feedback; I think it could have been maybe a little bit less of a interview, maybe a bit more about my own position, which is also something that Robin pointed out at the end. There's a reason why the Robin Hanson debate felt more like an interview. Let me explain: Most people I debate have to do a lot of thinking on the spot because their position just isn't grounded in that many connected beliefs. They have like a few beliefs. They haven't thought that much about it. When I raise a question, they have to think about the answer for the first time. And usually their answer is weak. So what often happens, my usual MO, is I come in like Kirby. You know, the Nintendo character where I first have to suck up the other person's position, and pass their Ideological Turing test. (Speaking of which, I actually did an elaborate Robin Hanson Ideological Turing Test exercise beforehand, but it wasn't quite enough to fully anticipate the real Robin's answers.) With a normal guest, it doesn't take me that long because their position is pretty compact; I can kind of make it up the same way that they can. With Robin Hanson, I come in as Kirby. He comes in as a pufferfish. So his position is actually quite complex, connected to a lot of different supporting beliefs. And I asked him about one thing and he's like, ah, well, look at this study. He's got like a whole reinforced lattice of all these different claims and beliefs. I just wanted to make sure that I saw what it is that I'm arguing against. I was aiming to make this the authoritative followup to the 2008 Foom Debate that he had on Overcoming Bias with Eliezer Yudkowsky. I wanted to kind of add another chapter to that, potentially a final chapter, cause I don't know how many more of these debates he wants to do. I think Eliezer has thrown in the towel on debating Robin again. I think he's already said what he wants to say. Another thing I noticed going back over the debate is that the arguments I gave over the debate were like 60% of what I could do if I could stop time. I wasn't at 100% and that's simply because realtime debates are hard. You have to think of exactly what you're going to say in realtime. And you have to move the conversation to the right place and you have to hear what the other person is saying. And if there's a logical flaw, you have to narrow down that logical flaw in like five seconds. So it is kind of hard-mode to answer in realtime. I don't mind it. I'm not complaining. I think realtime is still a good format. I think Robin himself didn't have a problem answering me in realtime. But I did notice that when I went back over the debate, and I actually spent five hours on this, I was able to craft significantly better counterarguments to the stuff that Robin was saying, mostly just because I had time to understand it i...

Join me and my friend Liron, a fitness coach from Los Angeles, as we discuss the complex relationship between fitness trends, body image, and attracting potential partners. We share personal stories and insights into how men and women design their workout routines in hopes of gaining attention from the opposite sex. We reveal how looks and health intersect in the social environment of the gym.  We also talk about the concept of "parallel play" at the gym, which is a unique way for people to work out individually while still experiencing a sense of community. This shows the multi-faceted nature of modern workout culture. We also explore cultural beauty standards and how they influence relationships. We look at how subjective attraction can lead people to pursue a "trophy" partner, and the potential judgments that can arise from relationships with large age gaps. We discuss dating preferences, examining how much weight men and women place on physical attributes versus qualities like security and confidence, which could be the ultimate universal attraction. Don't miss this episode as we give our thoughts on how dating apps have revolutionized the search for companionship, but may also complicate the path to lasting connections. Women, have you ever wondered if you should be training differently than men? Tune into today's episode!  In this episode, Liron and I dive into the often debated question of whether women should train differently than men. Our discussion explores the psychological and physiological aspects of exercise preferences and the importance of a well-rounded fitness routine. We address the tendency for women to gravitate towards cardiovascular exercises, often due to concerns about building too much muscle or appearing "bulky." However, we emphasize that women are meant to lift weights just as much as men and that doing so offers numerous benefits, especially as we age, including improved bone density, muscle mass, and metabolism. Throughout the discussion, we stress the importance of symmetrical training for both men and women, highlighting the aesthetic and functional benefits of working the upper body. While we acknowledge that the best exercise is the one you'll actually do, we encourage listeners to embrace shorter, more intense workouts for optimal results. Liron Kayvan founded BFLA in 2019. In Episode #17 TRAILER, "AI Risk=Jenga", Liron Shapira Interview, John talks with tech CEO and AI Risk Activist Liron Shapira about a broad range of AI risk topics centered around existential risk. Liron likens AI Risk to a game of Jenga, where there are a finite number of pieces, and each one you pull out leaves you one closer to collapse. He explains how something like Sora, seemingly just a video tool, is actually a significant, real Jenga piece, and could actually end all life on earth. This podcast is not journalism. But it's not opinion either. This show simply strings together the existing facts and underscores the unthinkable probable outcome, the end of all life on earth. For Humanity: An AI Safety Podcast, is the accessible AI Safety Podcast for all humans, no tech background required. Our show focuses solely on the threat of human extinction from AI. Peabody Award-winning former journalist John Sherman explores the shocking worst-case scenario of artificial intelligence: human extinction. The makers of AI openly admit it their work could kill all humans, in as soon as 2 years. This podcast is solely about the threat of human extinction from AGI. We'll meet the heroes and villains, explore the issues and ideas, and what you can do to help save humanity.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Goal-Completeness is like Turing-Completeness for AGI, published by Liron on December 20, 2023 on LessWrong. Turing-completeness is a useful analogy we can use to grasp why AGI will inevitably converge to "goal-completeness". By way of definition: An AI whose input is an arbitrary goal, which outputs actions to effectively steer the future toward that goal, is goal-complete. A goal-complete AI is analogous to a Universal Turing Machine: its ability to optimize toward any other AI's goal is analogous to a UTM's ability to run any other TM's same computation. Let's put the analogy to work: Imagine the year is 1970 and you're explaining to me how all video games have their own logic circuits. You're not wrong, but you're also apparently not aware of the importance of Turing-completeness and why to expect architectural convergence across video games. Flash forward to today. The fact that you can literally emulate Doom inside of any modern video games (through a weird tedious process with a large constant-factor overhead, but still) is a profoundly important observation: all video games are computations. More precisely, two things about the Turing-completeness era that came after the specific-circuit era are worth noticing: The gameplay specification of sufficiently-sophisticated video games, like most titles being released today, embeds the functionality of Turing-complete computation. Computer chips replaced application-specific circuits for the vast majority of applications, even for simple video games like Breakout whose specified behavior isn't Turing-complete. Expecting Turing-Completeness From Gwern's classic page, Surprisingly Turing-Complete: [Turing Completeness] is also weirdly common: one might think that such universality as a system being smart enough to be able to run any program might be difficult or hard to achieve, but it turns out to be the opposite - it is difficult to write a useful system which does not immediately tip over into TC. "Surprising" examples of this behavior remind us that TC lurks everywhere, and security is extremely difficult... Computation is not something esoteric which can exist only in programming languages or computers carefully set up, but is something so universal to any reasonably complex system that TC will almost inevitably pop up unless actively prevented. The Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) language that web pages use for styling HTML is a pretty representative example of surprising Turing Completeness: If you look at any electronic device today, like your microwave oven, you won't see a microwave-oven-specific circuit design. What you'll see in virtually every device is the same two-level architecture: A Turing-complete chip that can run any program An installed program specifying application-specific functionality, like a countdown timer It's a striking observation that your Philips Sonicare toothbrush and the guidance computer on the Apollo moonlander are now architecturally similar. But with a good understanding of Turing-completeness, you could've predicted it half a century ago. You could've correctly anticipated that the whole electronics industry would abandon application-specific circuits and converge on a Turing-complete architecture. Expecting Goal-Completeness If you don't want to get blindsided by what's coming in AI, you need to apply the thinking skills of someone who can look at a Breakout circuit board in 1976 and understand why it's not representative of what's coming. When people laugh off AI x-risk because "LLMs are just a feed-forward architecture!" or "LLMs can only answer questions that are similar to something in their data!" I hear them as saying "Breakout just computes simple linear motion!" or "You can't play Doom inside Breakout!" OK, BECAUSE AI HASN'T CONVERGED TO GOAL-COMPLETENESS YET. We're not ...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Contra Hanson on AI Risk, published by Liron on March 4, 2023 on LessWrong. Robin Hanson wrote a new post recapping his position on AI risk (LW discussion). I've been in the Eliezer AI-risk camp for a while, and while I have huge respect for Robin's rationality and analytical prowess, the arguments in his latest post seem ineffective at drawing me away from the high-doom-worry position. Robin begins (emphasis mine): First, if past trends continue, then sometime in the next few centuries the world economy is likely to enter a transition that lasts roughly a decade, after which it may double every few months or faster, in contrast to our current fifteen year doubling time. (Doubling times have been relatively steady as innovations are typically tiny compared to the world economy.) The most likely cause for such a transition seems to be a transition to an economy dominated by artificial intelligence (AI). Perhaps in the form of brain emulations, but perhaps also in more alien forms. And within a year or two from then, another such transition to an even faster growth mode might plausibly happen. And adds later in the post: The roughly decade duration predicted from prior trends for the length of the next transition period seems plenty of time for today's standard big computer system testing practices to notice alignment issues. Robin is extrapolating from his table in Long-Term Growth As A Sequence of Exponential Modes: I get that there's a trend here. But I don't get what inference rule Robin's trend-continuation argument rests on. Let's say you have to predict whether dropping a single 100-megaton nuclear bomb on New York City is likely to cause complete human extinction. (For simplicity, assume it was just accidentally dropped by the US on home soil, not a war.) As far as I know, the most reliably reality-binding kind of reasoning is mechanistic: Our predictions about what things are going to do rest on deduction from known rules and properties of causal models of those things. We should obviously consider the causal implications of releasing 100 megatons worth of energy, and the economics of having a 300-mile-wide region wiped out. Should we also consider that a nuclear explosion that decimates the world economy would proceed in minutes instead of years, thereby transitioning our current economic regime much faster than a decade, thus violating historical trends? I dunno, this trend-breaking seems totally irrelevant to the question of whether a singular 100-megaton nuke could cause human extinction. Am I just not applying Robin's trend-breaking reasoning correctly? After all, previous major human economic transitions were always leaps forward in productivity, while this scenario involves a leap backward. Ok, but what are the rules for this trend-extrapolation approach supposed to be? I have no idea when I'm allowed to apply it. I suspect the only way to know a rule like “don't apply economic-era extrapolation to reason about the risk of a single bomb causing human extinction” is to first cheat and analyze the situation using purely mechanistic reasoning. After that, if there's a particular trend-extrapolation claim that feels on-topic, you can say it belongs in the mix of reasoning types that are supposedly applicable to the situation. In our nuke example, there are two ways this could play out: If your first-pass mechanistic reasoning lands you far from what's predicted by trend extrapolation, e.g. if it says every human on earth dies within minutes, then hey, we're obviously talking about a freak event and not about extrapolating economic trends. Duh, economic models aren't designed to talk about a one-off armageddon event. You have to pick the right model for the scenario you want to analyze! Can I interest you in a model of extinction events? Did you know we're a...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Robin Hanson's latest AI risk position statement, published by Liron on March 3, 2023 on LessWrong. “While I've written on this many times before, it seems time to restate my position.” “While I agree that this is a logically possible scenario, not excluded by what we know, I am disappointed to see so many giving it such a high credence, given how crazy far it seems from our prior experience. Yes, there is a sense in which the human, farming, and industry revolutions were each likely the result of a single underlying innovation. But those were the three biggest innovations in all of human history. And large parts of the relevant prior world exploded together in those cases, not one tiny part suddenly exterminating all the rest. In addition, the roughly decade duration predicted from prior trends for the length of the next transition period seems plenty of time for today's standard big computer system testing practices to notice alignment issues. And note that the impressive recent AI chatbots are especially unlike the systems of concern here: self-improving very-broadly-able full-agents with hidden intentions. Making this an especially odd time to complain that new AI systems might have killed us all.” Seems not much has changed in the Yudkowsky vs. Hanson position over the years, i.e. still assigning high vs. low existential risk.
