On July 24th, Oni Press, in partnership with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc., resurrected EC Comics in spectacularly bloody fashion. Tales from the Abyss #1 contains 4 stories that captures the spirit of classic EC Comics. Then, on August 7th, Cruel Universe #1, a collection of science-fiction stories. I had the good fortune of chatting with Hunter Gorinson, President and Publisher at Oni Press, along with two of the creators of one of the tales from the abyss themselves, Chris Condon and Peter Krause. My number one takeaway from this interview was both the excitement and reverence all 3 have for EC Comics. It also doesn't hurt that both of these issues are phenomenal and I was blown away by the stories and the storytelling talent on display here. We talk about how this deal developed between the family of William M. Gaines and Oni Press, the staggering influence of EC Comics to this day, and a whole lot more. Here's what Oni Press had to say about Epitaphs from the Abyss: From the publisher that drove Tales from the Crypt, Vault of Horror, Haunt of Fear, and many more into the depraved hearts of an unsuspecting world, the immortal EC COMICS returns . . . with its first ALL-NEW series in nearly 70 years! In our first extra-sized, 40-page dose of fear, witness shocking tales of torment and tension in the undying EC tradition-as wrenched from the grave by the vile intentions of acclaimed writers Brian Azzarello (Batman: Damned, 100 Bullets), Chris Condon (That Texas Blood, Night People), J. Holtham (FX's The Handmaid's Tale), and Stephanie Phillips (Harley Quinn, Grim) and realized into bloody reality by "all-slaughter" artists Jorge Fornes (Rorschach, Danger Street), Phil Hester (Family Tree), Peter Krause (Irredeemable), and more! What the Comics Code Authority couldn't kill has only made it stronger . . . EC COMICS LIVES AGAIN IN EPITAPHS FROM THE ABYSS! Here's what Oni Press had to say about Cruel Universe: Compelled to OBLIVION, driven to ENTROPY, all life in our cosmos can only end in one place: COMPLETE ANNIHILATION! For the first time in 70 years, the limitless fury of EC Comics rages back to life to shred the very fabric of the universe itself-and wrench bizarre tales of time and space into our dimensional plane! Our guides across this double-sized, 40-page introduction to a cosmic maelstrom of strange extraterrestrial entities, malevolent scientists, and terrifying technological catastrophes? Learn to fear the void with the irradiated imaginations of Hugo Award nominee Corinna Bechko (Invisible Republic), rising star Chris Condon (That Texas Blood), Eisner Award nominee Matt Kindt (BRZRKR, Mind MGMT), and Edgar Award winner Ben H. Winters (The Last Policeman) as they collide with the wondrously destructive visions of artists Jonathan Case (Green River Killer), Kano (Immortal Iron Fist), Artyom Topilin (I Hate This Place), and Caitlin Yarsky (Black Hammer: Reborn)! The unpredictable return of EC Comics continues here with the quantum comics event of the millennium! Galaxies will collapse. Space-time will be distorted. And your very will to exist, too, shall be broken . . . Just remember: it's all in the name of SCIENCE! Our episode sponsors After the Realm Don't miss Eisner and Harvey award winning comics creator Michael Avon Oeming's newest crowdfunding project After The Realm. With over 300 pages of material and 22 new pages of story, this graphic novel collects issues 1-5 of this realm trotting dystopian fantasy adventure that follows young ranger Oona Lightfoot's travels and travails trying to find her best friend as the nine realms are torn asunder. In episode 87 of Game Design Unboxed: Inspiration to Publication we talk with Sen-Foong Lim on his comic book IP game Mind MGMT. A game that grows with the players in strategy as well as difficulty. One player controls Mind MGMT and must scour the city for new recruits. They move around on a secret map, trying to visit locations that match one of their three randomly drawn feature cards. They can also use their four Immortals to protect locations from being exposed. Listen to Sen compare working with a creator's IP versus a company like Viacom or Warner Brothers. He unboxes how they worked with the comic creator to expand the Mind MGMT world versus slapping the IP on a pre-existing design. Featuring: Sen-Foong Lim - Guest Danielle Reynolds - Host

Flux House, a new boutique imprint at Dark Horse that features the writing (and sometimes art) of bestselling cartoonist Matt Kindt, with crime, science fiction, and humor stories, all told and presented in startling and untraditional ways. Kindt has been writing and illustrating espionage and action-fueled comics like BRZRKR (with Keanu Reeves), Apache Delivery Service, BANG! Dept. H, Ether, Fear Case, MIND MGMT, Folklords, Revolver, 3 Story, Super Spy, and Pistolwhip for the last two decades. And it's safe to say that he is having a moment this spring... (More details below.) This year brings: The publication of his new series, Spy Suburb. This 3 part mini-series from Dark Horse Comics and Flex Books launched on January 11. This comic is the funniest thing Kindt has ever written. As Dark Horse Publisher Mike Richardson said, “If you close your eyes and imagine John Wick being dropped into a Wes Anderson film, you'll have a sense of the world of SPY SUPERB.” The release of Mind MGMT: Bootleg in hardcover (February 15, comic shop date; February 28, bookstore date). The latest series in the conspiracy-laden and mind-twisting universe of MIND MGMT, MIND MGMT: BOOTLEG marks the first time the series has been illustrated by an artist other than Kindt, featuring the work of Farel Dalrymple, Jill Thompson, David Rubín, and Matt Lesniewski. In MIND MGMT, a covert government agency of psychic super spies fell into oblivion after one of their top agents went rogue. What looked like the end was only the beginning as a former leader of MIND MGMT explores the darkest parts of the world and recruits a team of forgotten agents to rebuild the organization, bend reality, and go to war with a competing agency. Mister Mammoth is the world's greatest detective. The only mystery he can't seem to solve? How, exactly, he became the world's greatest detective… This spring, Dark Horse will publish the clever existential noir MISTER MAMMOTH, the first-ever original graphic novel from bestselling cartoonist Matt Kindt's all-new imprint, Flux House. Writer Matt Kindt will be joined on MISTER MAMMOTH by internationally acclaimed artist Jean-Denis Pendanx in his U.S. debut. Also in March, BOOM! Studios will publish the final issue of BRZRKR the 12-part comic book series co-created and co-written by movie star Keanu Reeves. The issue is co-written by Reeves and Kindt, and features artist Ron Garney, colorist Bill Crabtree and letterer Clem Robins. In April Flux House and Dark Horse will publish Hairball by Kindt and artist Tyler Jenkins with colors by Hilary Jenkins. In this supernatural thriller from the Eisner-nominated creators of Fear Case and Apache Delivery Service, a dysfunctional family's mounting problems may or may not be caused by an unlikely culprit: the family's cat. Upcoming Flux House publications will take many forms and formats, with each release having a distinct presentation including unique trim-sizes with two publications to be magazine-sized and special print features (like die-cut and fur) and a punch-card dust jacket that reveals a secret message. These publications are personally designed by Kindt to be both books and art objects. Today's episode is brought to you by Reburn. Please, treat yourself and get a copy of this brilliant indie comic. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/comics-in-motion-podcast/message

The story can best be described as a sci-fi / post apocalyptic journey where a strange and lovable group of misfits form a family. Think of it like an even weirder, yet heartfelt spin on The Wizard of Oz, but completely its own. The book has been in production for a while and had numerous homes before landing at Zoop to be crowdfunded. Lesniewski is a one-man creative team, writing, drawing, and lettering this personal love letter to comics. The campaign runs for 30 days, and backers will receive a 120-page completed story in softcover format. Other rewards include signatures, remarques, sketches, commissions, and even original pages from the book! Mind MGMT creator and collaborator Matt Kindt shares “Matt L's work is the most original stuff I've seen in comics in years - a singular voice and talent right out of the gate - a once-in-a-generation talent - waiting for the rest of the industry to catch up with him. Unbelievable work.” Matt Lesniewski is an Eisner Award-nominated comics artist, who has worked on multiple series for Dark Horse Comics, such as Mind MGMT, Static, and Crimson Flower. He has also self-published The Freak, and is a favorite amongst original art collectors for his unique and easily identifiable art style. Zoop CEO, Jordan Plosky shares: “I'm a huge fan of Matt's. It's been great to see his star rise through the comic projects he's been a part of, and his buzz online as a rising superstar in the world of comics. We're incredibly excited to play a part in the next step of Matt's journey to becoming an even bigger name in this industry.” Zoop is the new home for creator-owned crowdfunding. For publishers and creators, Zoop is an all-in-one pre-order, production, fulfillment, and marketing solution that connects them directly to their fans.

Episode 747 - Thanks to Our Patrons Jason Interviews Matt Kindt - Mind MGMT Bootleg #1 from Dark Horse ComicsMIND MGMT is: weird, mind-blowing, paranoid storytelling. It is the first ever comic book from Flux House, Matt Kindt's all-new imprint which features crime, science fiction, and humor stories, all told in startling and untraditional ways. Upcoming publications will take many forms, and the polybagged variant versions of MIND MGMT will contain a card that is playable as a playing card or as part of a new Flux House game. Previously in MIND MGMT: a covert government agency of psychic superspies fell into oblivion after one of their top agents went rogue. What looked like the end was only the beginning as a former leader of MIND MGMT explores the darkest parts of the world and recruits a team of forgotten agents to rebuild the organization, bend reality, and go to war with a competing agency. In this electric episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down podcast Tom and Quinns are going toe-to-toe in a battle for the ages, fighting the corner of the game that they like, and the other person… likes too… but less… On this podcast we're chatting about our lengthy first impressions of Crescent Moon and our much snappier first impressions of Bear Raid, as well as literally about 20 seconds of talking about the Mind MGMT app - so little, in fact, that I haven't even timestamped it! Have a great weekend, everybody! Timestamps: 02:39 - Crescent Moon 34:11 - Bear Raid
