Singer songwriter Mindy Gledhill shares her faith crisis experience that inspired her new album Rabbit Hole. For years, Mindy Gledhill’s relentless search for meaning has inspired her to pursue a variety of musical projects, both at home and abroad, and has now launched her head-first down a rabbit hole of new melodic creativity. Over the course of her musical career, Mindy has recorded wildly successful indie albums with a cadre of award-winning producers, starting with her 2004 debut, followed by four more albums over the next decade (Feather in the Wind, Anchor, Pocketful of Poetry, and the Christmas album Winter Moon). In addition to her own releases, Mindy has also performed as a guest artist on multiple acclaimed projects, including Kaskade’s 2011 Grammy-nominated album, Fire & Ice. Her popularity has led to sold out shows across the US, as well as performances with remarkable musical groups ranging from orchestras and rock bands to bluegrass revivalists. It’s also brought her music to primetime TV, where it has appeared in So You Think You Can Dance, Bones, 20/20, The Good Wife, and Dancing with the Stars. In addition, her work has been featured in several television commercials, including Fruit of the Loom’s 2012 Olympic Games ad campaign, AAA Insurance’s 2014 Super Bowl campaign, and LG Phones, to name a few. But as rewarding as those successes have been, Mindy has always felt compelled to traverse the provincial borders of her backyard. Over the years, she has sung and danced with inspiring Kenyan women while on a humanitarian trip, guided an artists’ retreat to Morocco, and enjoyed sold-out tours in Japan and a number-one hit single in Korea. More recently, the personal trails she has blazed—complete with unexpected forks, twists, and turns—have led to a fresh destination on her musical map. Her new album, appropriately entitled Rabbit Hole, is the breathy confessional of a rapt soul who slipped down the curious tunnel of experience, landed in a hall of locked doors, and refused to be contained. In Rabbit Hole, Mindy confronts the challenges of life—all its unfulfilled expectations, sudden detours, and existential wounds—and presents us with a silver lining through bouncy rhythms and ballads of unabashed optimism. In spite of life’s crucibles and crises, she reassures us that everything is going to be alright, and that “To be upside down is a fine way to be.”

I was instantly mesmerized by Peter Criss and knew that this was what I wanted to do. My first teacher was my Uncle Rob and I began playing to records by Kiss, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Dio, Journey, Cheap Trick, and Aerosmith. At the age of 18, I attended P.I.T (The percussion division of the Musician’s Institute) in Hollywood, CA. I graduated with honors in 1989. Joe Porcaro, Ralph Humphrey, Steve Houghton, Chuck Flores, Toss Panos, and Richie (Gajate) Garcia are some of the greats I had the honor of learning from. I followed up with studying Gary Chester’s, The New Breed, concepts with Victor Loyo of Luis Miguel. My education was so important to me that I continued to study with as many people as I could. I began teaching drum lessons at the age of 19 at Ontario Music in Ontario, California.I gratefully landed my first professional touring gig with Michael Sweet, of the band, Stryper. Thus began my career as a touring and session drummer.I have been an active session player for many years and have had the honor of recording with Michael Sweet (Stryper), Guardian, Zache Brooke, The Brave, John Elefante (Kansas), Venice, Jay Nash, Mindy Gledhill, Michael Jackson, Kyle Vincent, Hillary Duff, Eric Hutchinson, Avion, Steve Bertrand, Drake Bell, G.E.M and currently, Tears for Fears.'

They answer a listener's question who asks for help discussing her feelings about gender inequality inside the church with her father who currently serves as an Area Authority Seventy. This listener wants to be open and honest with her family, but worries about damaging or losing her relationships with them. In response, Dr. Money and Mindy discuss the important concepts of "differentiation" and "enmeshment." This podcast is Part 3 of a Mormon Stories and A Thoughtful Faith Collaboration. Mindy Gledhill is an American indie pop music singer-song writer. She has five albums, the Sum of all Grace, Anchor, Winter Moon and Pocketful of Poetry and has collaborated on many others.  Mindy’s music appears in film, television and commercials. Its has been described as ‘tender, emotional, intelligent, and touchingly auto-biographical, fun flirty and heartfelt.’  Her vocal style is warm and rich;  each of her songs attest to the tremendous talent she has as both a musician and a lyricist.  She’s also innovative and entrepreneurial and in 2012 was recognized as one of “Utah’s 40 Under 40” in the Utah Valley Business Q Magazine. But Mindy also has a rich life story. Born into a large Mormon family she grew up in a faith tradition that could not keep up with her growing awareness of gender inequality and patriarchy. Mindy joins Gina to discuss her life, her work, her family and her personal gender politics. In Parts One and Two of the series John Dehlin interviewed pop artist Mindy Gledhill and classical pianist Dustin Gledhill regarding their new electronic synth-pop project called Hive Riot. In Part 3 A Thoughtful Faith podcast host Gina Colvin interviews Mindy about her faith, women’s issues, and other dimensions of Mindy’s experiences as a woman, mother, wife, pop artist, Mormon, and human. In Part 1 John explores Mindy and Dustin’s respective stories as Mormons, along with their careers as successful musical performing artists.  Dustin also discusses his difficulties as a gay Mormon (including his attempts to change his sexual orientation, driving him to the point of suicide), and Mindy discusses her journey to become an LGBT ally (partially through Dustin’s influence).   In Part 2we discuss the Hive Riot project (which is the perfect Christmas Gift for this holiday season…along with Mindy’s Christmas album).

Welcome to Adobe GoLive 6 BYU Professor Ron Simpson receiving the Lifetime Achievement Pearl Award from the FCMA (photo by Scott Thompson for The Daily Universe) Places to look and listen: Every year the Faith-Centered Music Association, the FCMA, gathers for the annual Pearl Awards -- recognizing excellence in recorded music. This year's ceremonies in the BYU Fine Arts Center featured the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to the very-deserving Ron Simpson.  He's an LDS musician, songwriter, player, studio owner, teacher, music publisher, record label general manager, columnist for Meridian Magazine, and so much more.  A man who has made a difference in the church and in the world with his own music and in the way he has mentored and encouraged others. Today we'll bring you the audio of that presentation, including live and phoned-in comments from (in this order) country singer Dave Lemmon, performer/writer/arranger Clive Romney, composer/producer Merrill Jenson, studio owner Cliff Maag, director of BYU's Living Legends Janielle Christensen, sound company owner Joe Anderson, BYU Young Ambassador director Randy Boothe, managing director of BYU's Tantara Records Ben Fales, member of Diamond Rio Dan Truman, singer Wendee Jensen Truman, songwriter/artist Mindy Gledhill, songwriter/playwright/broadcaster Steven Kapp Perry, songwriter/producer Staci Peters, singer/songwriter Cherie Call, and songwriter/producer/arranger Tyler Castleton. That's this week on The Cricket and Seagull...   Reach. Lift. Inspire. The Cricket and Seagull Fireside Chat is a Podcast bringing music and interviews to Latter-day Saints and their friends worldwide. Steven Kapp Perry features the unique voices of authors, artists, musicians, scholars, and fellow Saints. Pull up a chair and join us for The Cricket & Seagull Fireside Chat!
