If you're listening to my podcast, it's likely that the topics of health and wellness are often on your mind. You probably keep an eye out for the latest superfood discoveries, health hacks and big "no-no" ingredients to avoid. You may even have tried a few of the life-changing products and tools that I use every day to support my energy and wellness. But how often do you contemplate aging and death? We generally avoid these topics in our culture due to the uncomfortable reminder that life is finite. In today's conversation, Jason Prall shares how he's sought out these realities head-on in attempts to understand how people around the world live, age and die. How you live now will determine how you live later, and though we DO all age (if we're lucky!) and die, there are proven ways to mature healthfully and gracefully, manage biological age, embrace discomfort and become clear on exactly what we are living for. Yes, Jason Prall is back on the show to teach us about the famous Blue Zones, hormetic stress and how to become a wise elder. His first episode on Awakening Aphrodite is one of my all-time favorites - if you missed it, check it out here: 180. Orienting to Ease, Unlocking Your Power by Expressing Your Feminine and Changing Your Reality with Jason Prall Jason Prall is a health educator, practitioner, author and filmmaker. In 2018, his independent research and experience as a practitioner led him to create "The Human Longevity Project," a nine-part film series that uncovers the true nature of chronic disease in our modern world. He's currently working on his next film series that explores ancient methods of healing mind, body, and soul from indigenous cultures around the world. He's recently released his best-selling new book titled “Beyond Longevity: A Proven Plan for Healing Faster, Feeling Better, and Thriving at Any Age." Have you ever read a book that immediately changed your life and touched your Soul? My guest in this episode, Molly Larkin, and her co-author and mentor, Native American Shaman and Medicine Man, Bear Heart (Marcellus William) of the Muskogee Creek tribe, did just that. I was so humbled and deeply grateful when Molly agreed to come on the show so she could share with you these profound wise teachings with the hopes that they will help you find more meaning, peace, purpose, connection and joy in your life - I know it did for me! Molly has been a spiritual seeker since the age of seven, when she learned about the scientific understanding of the time that human beings only utilize 10% of their cognitive capacity. That moment sparked her intrigue into the vast possibilities of human potential and her desire to utilize the entirety of her brain's capacity in her life. Molly has studied with various indigenous elders from around the world for over 30 years and was Bear Heart's apprentice for 15 years, learning many of his medicine methods. She is a Sun Dancer, a Vision Faster and a Pipe Carrier. Molly has also studied with Lakota elders Wallace Black Elk and Maya Priest and Master Teacher Miguel Angel Vergara. She is an energy healing practitioner and works with an international clientele of people and animals, both in person and via long distance. She teaches healing classes in the U.S. for the largest healing organization in Europe: NFSH-The Healing Trust. Molly has taught personal growth and spirituality workshops in the U.S., Europe, and Australia (whew!). Molly also teaches classes in spiritual healing and is available for private consultations and readings online. As I mentioned, most significantly, Molly co-authored, with Muskogee Creek elder Marcellus “Bear Heart” Williams, the international best-seller “The Wind Is My Mother; the Life and Teachings of a Native American Shaman” -- a book that touched my Soul. “Meditation is a way for nourishing and blossoming the divine within you.” — Amit Ray Molly Larkin starts by citing two studies that help explain what meditation can do for us. Several years ago, a study was done that estimated our brains think up to 50,000 thoughts each day, and 90% are the same as yesterday. There's some dispute as to the accuracy of this statistic, but even if the number is half of that, it's a heck of a lot of thoughts! Another study published in a 2010 issue of Science Magazine reported that the average American adult spends 47% of their waking life “mind wandering,” or not attending to the task at hand. Moreover, these periods of mind wandering were accompanied by reports of unhappiness. What Does Meditation Do? Very simply, - Meditation helps shut out, or at least slow down, those 50,000 random thoughts and quiets both the mind and the body. - Meditation helps us to pay attention and focus. - Meditation helps to stop our mind wandering. Learning to control our random thoughts helps us achieve a state of deep peace when the mind is calm and silent. In today's world, we have a lot working against us. A big one is the feeling of time speeding up and slipping away. But really, there are still 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day—it's more about the increasing amount of activity and rate of change that we must cope with in a day. Currently, there are more world changing events happening in any given period of time than have ever happened before. Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, said “We human beings currently create as much information in two days as we did from the dawn of civilization up through 2003!” That was in 2003. How much more information must be inundating us today? No wonder we're overwhelmed! Our minds can't keep up so we tend to shut down and go numb. Our minds were not built for speed; we evolved when things were much slower. Four hundred years ago, people had a lot of time to ponder things before they had to change. Our bodies were, and still are, designed to be in tune with the sun, the moon, the stars, the seasons, and the cycles of nature. That simplicity is what our souls long for. Meditation helps us slow down, and return to the sacred and our relationship with the natural world. Valeria interviews Molly Larkin author of Meditations on the Natural World and The Fountain of Youth Is Just A Breath Away. A writer, teacher, and healing practitioner, Molly Larkin has spent over thirty years studying with indigenous elders around the world, and is passionate about health and balanced living. She is a trainer for England's The Healing Trust, teaching Spiritual Healing around the United States. She is a Sun Dancer in the Lakota tradition, has done several vision quests, leads sweat lodges, and is a carrier of the Sacred Pipe. Her mission is to help students and clients achieve their life purpose while balancing spirituality and modern life so they can be happy, healthy and successful. In other words, in living at 100% of their own potential. Her first Native American teacher, Sun Bear, said, “I don't want to hear about your philosophy unless it will help me to grow corn.” Meaning, that it will have a practical impact on improving day to day life. That is what Molly offers. She co-authored, with Muskogee Creek elder Marcellus “Bear Heart” Williams, the international best-seller “The Wind Is My Mother; the Life and Teachings of a Native American Shaman.“ She blogs about Ancient Wisdom for Balanced living at www.MollyLarkin.com and has published two other books: “Meditations on the Natural World; A Guided Journal to Help Find the Technique That's Right for You” and “The Fountain of Youth Is Just A Breath Away; Breathing Exercises for Relaxation, Health and Vitality.” To learn more about Molly and her work, please visit: https://mollylarkin.com/ For Intro-free episodes: https://www.patreon.com/aquestforwellbeingpodcast Podcast Page: https://fitforjoy.org/podcast
This week Rachel gets very raw and vulnerable as she discusses what she is personally doing to learn more about racial injustice in America. She is taking it back to her lineage of the Native American people and culture. With the guidance and teachings of Bear Heart, in his book “My Mother Is The Wind: The Life And Teachings Of A Native American Shaman” with Molly Larkin, Rachel is able to draw connections to the long-standing systemic cultural and racial issues that have pervaded America for centuries. She continues to share what she will be doing with this new-found knowledge and how it will change her way of looking at all people, places, and things. It brings it back again to the fact that we are all interconnected. In this solocast episode, I’m exploring the topic of finding joy in uncertain times. In the midst of the shifting world events, I’ve felt weighed down recently. In this episode, I’ll talk about how it takes real courage to follow a muse like Joy in hard times, and following joy, and love, and our own hearts is more important now, than ever before. I’ve spent a lot of time mulling over why joy has felt so awkward recently, and why it still beckons me on. And, I’ve found a lot of uplifting quotes and thoughts from others to share with you, too. The six ways ways of finding joy in uncertain times I share in this episode are: 1. Define what’s true for you – regardless of what else may feel uncertain, what do you know is true for you, right now? 2. Take comfort that it’s perfectly OK (and natural) to grieve or feel sadness at the same time as you feel excitement or joy. 3. Take action: joy is an act of defiance and self care 4. Take action: caring for others spreads joy 5. Baby steps: Joy builds more joy. Little Bits of joy brought to life make room for more joy in your life 6. Look at joy in a new way: explore what joy looks like at the crossroads of whatever else you’re feeling Resources Helen McLaughlin’s delightful “Weekly Findings” Newsletter Laura Simms post on “Finding Purpose in Uncertain Times” Laura Simms in episode 34 Molly Larkin in episode 10 (where we talk about Byron Katie) Jennifer Ching’s inspiring CAKEooh Blog

Feeling stuck and like you have no momentum sucks. The truth is you will more than likely feel stuck at some point in your life, whether that be in your business or around personal growth, or at a full time job. I often feel it, and find myself questioning if I’m “on the right path,” even four years into the podcast. This week on the podcast, I’m sharing about how I had an aha moment around “How to get Unstuck.” At a recent conference, I attended a break-out session entitled “How to get Unstuck in Your Business.” My aha moment did not come from the speakers or the info that was being shared in the room, and it’s something I want to share with you, this week on the show. I went into that room thinking that to be successful or to be well received or to be on the “right” path that I should be further along than I currently am. That I needed to have it all figured out, and that somehow my current situation wasn’t enough. And then I started thinking. I like having time with my son, while he’s seven. I like having some space to breathe and to think. I love the clients I work with and I love the work I do. And while it may seem super simple, or overly obvious, and very zen, I decided to ask my own intuition a few questions, and answer these questions in the form of a letter (you can learn more about it from Jess Lively.) Instead of focusing on this idea that I’m stuck, or if you’re listening, instead of focusing on the idea that YOU are stuck… what if we stop fighting reality of what is, and accept that we are OK right now, just the way you and I are? What if we change the Story in our head, or, the narrative, from “I’m not far enough along” to “I’m enough right where I am”?? What if instead of “I’m not far enough along,” I say “I’m learning and in the process, and I’m becoming exactly who I dream of being”?? As I was writing this letter, I found my intuition asking me if I was really stuck. I want to share this with you because I feel like it may be helpful for someone out there. Here’s what I wrote: “There’s wisdom in staying put. In being OK with what is, right this moment. You want more time. The only fear based statement here is the false belief that things will not work out for you. Let that go. Your son is only going to be 7 once, and you want more time with him. This time you have now, it is a blessing. About your business, there’s only one you. That’s the thing to focus on, and the thing to sell the shit out of. Because there is only one you and your services are valuable. You absolutely won’t find another client you love if you don’t put yourself out there. And there is wisdom in slowing down and letting this time be what it is.” Here ere are four other ways to get unstuck. 1. Journal it out Two Questions to Journal On: So I’ll put that question back out to you. What is the truth of this time for you? If you are feeling stuck, is it true that you are actually stuck? 2. Have Faith that you are just where you should be, right this second. One of my mentors, Sister Michelle, used to teach us that “the right people will come, at the right moment, and with the right information.” What happens if you shift how you view your current situation, and have the faith in the truth that things are happening, at the right time? 3. Do ‘The Work’ One of my favorite ways to work through what Byron Katie calls “painful thoughts” is to go through the steps of doing “The Work.” When you think of the thing or situation that is making you feel stuck, stop and ask yourself: is it true? And then you ask, is it really true? Who am I when I believe this thought? Who would I be without this thought? You can learn more about this one at Byron Katie’s site. 4. Take Action and Turn up the Crossfade Action is the quickest and most direct way to get unstuck. While you may currently be feeling stuck, I’m betting you have taken some steps, somewhere along the way, to start working towards your dream (or business, or personal growth). One of my past guests, Matt Wood - a sound engineer for Skywalker sound, talked about how having the patience for things is a lot like turning up the cross fade in our life. He explained that the thing that you’re working on starts out at an almost un-perceivable level in your life. You know it’s there but you can’t quite hear it. Then, as time goes on, that thing gets more perceivable in your life. Like music in a cross fade, that thing gets louder, and then you can hear the melody of that thing in your life. Before long, the crossfade has happened, and whatever dream or thing you’ve been following is now present, really and truly present in your life. If you want to learn more about this, I have some resources for you: Want to hear more about Byron Katie? Tune in to Molly Larkin in Episode 10. More on turning up the crossfade? As a Life Coach, she brings her experience as a mental health nurse, a student of yoga and meditation, as well as her lived experience of having suffered like hell looking for some way to fix what was never broken. She shares how women can wake up from the trance of unworthiness to uncover their truth and experience freedom.
Molly Larkin was born in Brooklyn, New York to a very Irish-American family and lived in and around New York City until moving to California in the 1970s. Since the mid-1980s she has studied with Native American and indigenous elders from around the world, and was an apprentice to Muskogee-Creek healer/teacher, Marcellus "Bear Heart" Williams. With Bear Heart, she co-authored "The Wind Is My Mother; the Life and Teachings of A Native America Shaman." Bear Heart, a full-blooded Muskogee Creek Indian and one of the last "trained" Medicine Men, shares this knowledge, combining it with his more formal, graduate degree in psychology to build a bridge between Native American and modern spirituality.
Molly Larkin gave her witness in front of a full house in the St. Patrick parish center on August 12, 2015.
In this episode I had the pleasure of talking to Molly Larkin about meeting addiction with loving kindness. Molly is a dear. I remember meeting her for the first time in January and being impressed with her presence. Strong, comforting, welcoming. She's the kind of person who makes you feel at ease and OK in your own skin. Learning that Molly is a registered nurse and a certified life coach, makes sense, she is so undoubtedly in her element in the work that she does. What I find remarkable about this interview is the way she dives right in and we talk about "hard stuff" - addiction, eating disorders, ego, and self worth. In the same instance, Molly exudes humor, love, and acceptance. I truly enjoyed our conversation, and I'm so glad that we have crossed paths. In this episode, Molly and I talk about: - Her experience with addiction and an eating disorder - How "maitri" (loving kindness) has been a key to her unlocking painful thoughts - "The Work" of Byron Katie - The ego's role in painful thoughts - How to return to joy, even when the ego is running the show, and one is stuck n the midst of painful thoughts - Molly's work with clients, and how to begin freeing oneself from addiction I'm super excited that Molly is one of our speakers for the Dream Into Action Retreat running this weekend (November 13-14, 2015).
