Send us a textCan a civil rights icon lose its way? That's the provocative question we tackle as we dive deep into the Southern Poverty Law Center's journey from revered champion of justice to a polarizing force in activism. We're joined by Tyler O'Neill, managing editor of the Daily Signal and insightful author of "Making Hate Pay: The Corruption of the Southern Poverty Law Center." Tyler unveils the SPLC's transformation under Morris Dees, from its initial noble victories against the Ku Klux Klan to its controversial expansion that targets mainstream conservative groups. Through Tyler's lens, we explore the potential motivations behind this evolution and the role money and power might play in reshaping the organization's mission. Our discussion also brings to light the contentious labeling of groups like the Alliance Defending Freedom and the Family Research Council as hate organizations by the SPLC. Examining a chilling incident where the Family Research Council was victimized in a violent attack, influenced by the SPLC's hate map, we confront the troubling intersections between activism and real-world violence. Listen as we dissect the ongoing tensions between social conservatives and LGBTQ advocacy, while delving into the complex dynamics that fuel these clashes. Prepare for a thought-provoking dialogue that challenges perceptions and encourages critical thinking about the motives of influential entities.
How did the son of Alabama sharecroppers, with relatives who were openly racist, become one of the country's most prominent voices against white supremacy? His name is Morris Dees, and in 1971 he co-founded the Southern Poverty Law Center. In this 1991 interview Dees discusses his career, how he got started, why he got into the kind of law he became known for, and what the SPLC was about. Hal Malchow was the incredibly innovative Democratic direct mail and fundraising consultant, who passed away several weeks ago. His final chapter was chronicled by Sasha Issenberg in Politico recently. Hal's was truly a creative mind, including breaking new ground on sophisticated political microtargeting and "social pressure" tactics to generate increased voter turnout. Joining this conversation are two of Hal's longtime business partners and friends - fellow direct mail consultants, Trish Hoppey and Rich Schlackman. We discuss Hal's political roots in progressive politics out of the Deep South, his innovative and curious political mind, the new approaches he developed, and the legacy he leaves behind after decades in the trenches of political targeting and communications. IN THIS EPISODEMemories of meeting Hal for the first time...Hal's path to DC from the Deep South...The GOP luminary who was one of Hal's most trusted friends...The innovations in political targeting and messaging spearheaded by Hal...A few of the races and campaigns most impacted by Hal's creativity...The origin of Hal's groundbreaking work on "social pressure" with two Ivy League academics...Why Hal left day-to-day consulting after the 2010 cycle and how he stayed involved over the past decade...Hal's most recent advice to Democratic campaigns...Hal's motivations during the final chapter of his life...Final thoughts on Hal's legacy in politics...AND The Analyst Institute, bananas ideas, Evan Bayh, better mousetraps, Andrew Bleeker, CHAID analysis, Campaign Performance Group, Christina Coloroso, couch surfing, Mario Cuomo, Morris Dees, failed attorneys, fake-out mail, Vic Fazio, feedback loops, funny accents, Page Gardner, Alan Gerber, Al Gore, Christine Hopkinson, Herb Kelleher, Harry Kennedy, Ted Kennedy, Dean Levitan, Alex Malchow, microtargeting, Janet Napolitano, Gavin Newsom, paella, personalized yard signs, Mike Podhorzer, rat infestations, Rick Ridder, Mitt Romney, Ron Rosenblith, Santa Fe, Tom Sugar, Richard Viguerie, Voter Contact Services, Mark Warner, Michael Woolridge & more!
Morris Dees may seem to have the moral courage to stand up to anti-Black racism with his Southen Poverty Law Center. However, Dees himself has a defended WS and even mistreated his own Black workers.. Founded in 1971 by Morris Dees, an Alabama lawyer and businessman, Morris saw an obligation to stand up for the disenfranchised. He sold a successful book publishing company and started a law practice to give them a voice. Jackie Aranda Osorno is a staff attorney at the law center. A self-described "Latinx queer woman", Jackie immigrated from Mexico and experienced legal systems that categorized and pigeon-holed people by stereotypes. After graduating from law school, she went to Southern Poverty Law Center for a couple of years, then left to do some immigration work, then returned where she currently resides. She deals with revising the legal system to direct sentences to be more in line with the crime, and treatment as opposed to long incarceration and real rehabilitation as opposed to warehousing with no change in behavior. In particular, dealing with prison systems that are overcrowded and understaffed is a huge challenge that she and the SPLC are addressing currently. Our second season closes with an informative and fascinating discussion of White Supremacy in America. In this episode the Dunn Brothers provide eye-opening information on the rise of White Supremacy, how it is promoted via the internet, and how it will influence our future. Our guest for this episode, Attorney Heidi Burich, a lawyer for The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), is an expert on White Supremacy. Founded in 1971 by Civil Rights lawyers Morris Dees and Joseph Levin Jr., the SPLC, a nonprofit organization, has been fighting White Supremacy since 1971 and has successfully challenged and defeated White Supremacist in many infamous cases. Dr.’s Marvin and Raymond Dunn take advantage of the opportunity to address specific questions with Attorney Burich that listeners want answered. Hear their discussion with Burich, surrounding the $14 million dollars lawsuit against “The Daily Stormer”, as well as, the $38 million dollars lawsuit against the hate group the "Christina Knights." The episode reaches a climax, when it addresses "how" and "why" interest in hate groups and their activities have risen in the United States of America, since the election of President Donald J. Trump. We are very grateful to have Attorney Heidi Burich as our expert guest to discuss White Supremacy in America. To learn more about The Southern Poverty Law Center or to make a donation to their "Stop Hatred in America" Campaign, please visit their website at www.splcenter.org.  In closing, we would like to thank our listeners for supporting our podcast. There may have been some optimistic naïfs somewhere in America hoping that the bipartisan condemnation of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) for a host of ethical ills followed by  the “resignations” of Morris Dees, Mark Potok, and Heidi Beirich signaled the start of some major housecleaning—housecleaning that might have turned up some morals that had long been tucked away in their Alabama attic. No such luck. First, some recent history: IFI hosted our annual fall banquet on Friday, November 1. This year's banquet speaker was Franklin Graham. Shortly thereafter, one of the SPLC's Grand Inquisitors, Brett Barrouquere, contacted IFI in a then-suspected, now-confirmed effort to ferret out any sexuality heresy that Franklin Graham may have expressed. To be clear, I mean views that the SPLC deems heretical. The Inquisitors at the Society for the Persecution and Libeling of Christians seek nothing less than either exile or baptism in the pagan “LGB” and “T” religion of sexual anarchy. Read more...

Today on the podcast I am chatting with Steve Fiffer. Steve Fiffer is a prolific author who has written 16 books, several screenplays, and dozens of articles on a range of topics. Steve writes non-fiction, and has written numerous memoirs, not only about his own life, but as co-author for others working on theirs. His as-told-to memoirs include books by Miami Dolphins football star Mercury Morris, former Secretary of State James Baker, and the co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Morris Dees. In this conversation, Steve and I discuss his amazing personal story, how to write a compelling memoir, and then we also dig into very practical strategies and exercises you can do to get started writing whatever it is that you've always wanted to write. Steve's books that were discussed in this episode include: Three Quarters, Two Dimes and a Nickel: A Memoir of Becoming Whole... Jimmie Lee and James: Two Lives, Two Deaths and the Movement That Changed America... Tyrannosaurus Sue: The Extraordinary Saga of the Largest, Most Fought Over T. Rex Ever Found

Block A: Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law Center; Block B: Ellie's unexpected acceptance by Mississippians during her South road trip.
A refreshing and much-needed take-down of the ethically impoverished Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and its avaricious founder Morris Dees inspired me to recount IFI’s true story about our interaction with the blackguards who maintain the SPLC’s “hate groups” list. The impetus for Carl Cannon’s critique of the SPLC on Real Clear Politics was the recent assault on esteemed scholar Charles Murray at Middlebury College in Vermont, an assault that was inspired by the pernicious SPLC, the same organization that inspired the shooting at the Family Research Council’s headquarters in 2012. On the morning of March 21, 1981, the body of 19-year-old Michael Donald was found hanging from a tree in Mobile, Alabama. The years that followed saw the conviction of his two killers and a civil case brought by Donald's mother which bankrupted the largest Klan organization in the United States. In this episode of The Modern Law Library, we speak with Laurence Leamer about his new book on the case, The Lynching: The Epic Courtroom Battle that Brought Down the Klan. He shares details about how and why Donald was killed, what became of his killers, and how the case also brought Morris Dees and the Southern Poverty Law Center into greater national prominence.

On a Friday night in March 1981 Henry Hays and James Knowles scoured the streets of Mobile, Alabama in their car, hunting for a black man. The young men were members of Klavern 900 of the United Klans of America. They were seeking to retaliate after a largely black jury could not reach a verdict in a trial involving a black man accused of the murder of a white man. The two Klansmen found nineteen-year-old Michael Donald walking home alone. Hays and Knowles abducted him, beat him, cut his throat, and left his body hanging from a tree branch in a racially mixed residential neighborhood. Arrested, charged, and convicted, Hays was sentenced to death—the first time in more than half a century that the state of Alabama sentenced a white man to death for killing a black man. On behalf of Michael’s grieving mother, Morris Dees, the legendary civil rights lawyer and cofounder of the Southern Poverty Law Center, filed a civil suit against the members of the local Klan unit involved and the UKA, the largest Klan organization. Charging them with conspiracy, Dees put the Klan on trial, resulting in a verdict that would level a deadly blow to its organization. My guest, Laurence Leamer, has written about this event, uncovered new information, including the climate of hate created by former Alabama governor, George Wallace that led to this lynching. Laurence Leamer is a New York Times Bestselling author of over a dozen books including the Kennedy Women and The Price of Justice. He is with me via Skype from Washington DC to discuss his latest book The Lynching: The Epic Courtroom Battle that Brought Down the Klan.
In 1984 attorney Morris Dees sued the Ku Klux Klan on behalf of the family of murdered a 19-year-old Alabama man Michael Donald. Journalist and author Laurence Leamer discusses the case, and his book "The Lynching: The Epic Courtroom Battle That Brought Down the Klan" on The Steve Fast Show.
The New York Times bestselling author of The Kennedy Women chronicles the powerful and spellbinding true story of a brutal race-based killing in 1981 and subsequent trials that undid one of the most pernicious organizations in American history—the Ku Klux Klan.On a Friday night in March 1981 Henry Hays and James Knowles scoured the streets of Mobile in their car, hunting for a black man. In addition to telling a gripping and consequential story, Laurence Leamer chronicles the KKK and its activities in the second half the twentieth century, and illuminates its lingering effect on race relations in America today. A conversation with Bob and Aleicia Woodrick featuring Morris Dees.
A conversation with Morris Dees.
Legendary civil rights advocate Morris Dees addresses how our commitment to justice for all will determine our nation’s success in the next century as America becomes more diverse and economic disparity widens. Drawing upon past and current cases, he also examines the issue of hate crimes and the need to teach tolerance, love and respect for one another. Dees co-founded the Southern Poverty Law Center in 1971 to handle lawsuits involving civil rights violations, domestic terrorism, and hate-motivated crimes. Since then the Center has successfully battled and dismantled a series of hate groups, including the Aryan Nation, Ku Klux Klan, and has secured huge criminal, civil, and financial judgments against them.
