Back in 2007, a review of Cameron Crowe's ELIZABETHTOWN on a little website called The A.V. Club set off a cultural firestorm by birthing the term "Manic Pixie Dream Girl". On this episode of Debut Buddies, we get into the origins of (and problems with) the term, discuss the original MPDG in question (as played in the film by Kirsten Dunst), and consider the implications for films featuring ebullient female characters past and future. We also play I See What You Did There, and spend some cozy time in the MouthGarf Report.Sources:https://www.salon.com/2014/07/15/im_sorry_for_coining_the_phrase_manic_pixie_dream_girl/https://www.avclub.com/the-bataan-death-march-of-whimsy-case-file-1-elizabet-1798210595https://www.avclub.com/wild-things-16-films-featuring-manic-pixie-dream-girls-1798214617https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manic_Pixie_Dream_Girlhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bringing_Up_BabyPlease give us a 5 star rating on Apple Podcasts! Is she a Quirky Muse or a Flat Character? Today we are diving headfirst into the world of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. We'll unpack the origins of the trope, coined by film critic Nathan Rabin in his review of "Elizabethtown" (remember Kirsten Dunst's airport twirling?), and explore its evolution through Zooey Deschanel's rise to fame. We'll discuss how movies like "Garden State" and “500 Days of Summer” impacted the trope (and indie music), the merits of the MPDG, explore the overlap with the Pick Me Girl and debate whether Red era Taylor Swift was a full-blown MPDG or simply the queen of twee. It's 2023 and Heaven is back from hiatus to deliver a super-sized episode! This week's episode will discuss the popular film trope of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl, specifically, what Manic Pixie Dream Girls say about men's thoughts on women, male filmmakers and the male protagonists who fall head over heels in love with these women. Heaven also goes through the list of the most popular Manic Pixie Dream Girls in film history and asks: Are they Manic Pixie Dreams Girls or are they just women with quirks and an odd personality?Support Me:https://linktr.ee/FromMyLipsPod
On a piqué votre curiosité ?
Hey guys! Today's episode is a real treat. We got on the mic today with our good friend Maria to uncover debatably one of medias worst tropes, MPDG. This episode is pretty lighthearted (no matter how deep we get into it lol) and towards the end, is simplified into what it feels like to be put in a categorized box. We hope you enjoy it! Women with ADHD are tired of the manic pixie dream girl stereotype. Because we are more than our quirks.
Wong Kar-wai’s “inverse stories” structure really hits its stride in CHUNGKING EXPRESS, illustrating love as fleeting, important, slow, and instantaneous with the not-quite-parallel stories of the blonde, the cop, the MPDG, and… the cop. Jenny is back to help us discuss one of Wong’s better-known films (and one of her favorites), which she says uses a “call and response” style and characters that embody the different ways people value time with those they love through routines and rituals – all, of course, in service of Straight-Up Vibes™. From Holly Golightly to Summer Finn, the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope has been around for generations. Have we finally moved past the need for them, or have we misunderstood these characters all along? Our friend Shawn Lee joins us as we look at the rise, life, and decline of the MPDG. I think I am like a white Knight/savior but I'm just a has-been, washed up, forgotten and discarded MPDG proclaiming to the gods every lesson I didn't learn and all the sins I don't regret. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theelenashow/message

We missed a lot of opportunities here. Salia's ability to shapeshift seems like an apt (if accidental) transgender analogy. At which point in the relationship should that come up? Wesley's reaction works for both cases. Admittedly, we came down pretty hard on him. I think Derek said “alt-right,” like, four times. On the other hand, IS Salia a manic pixie dream girl? I dismissed it out of hand because I bought into Derek's question as an either/or. This perfect woman who exists free of her own baggage to help Wesley out with his because she's composed of infinite patience and love? I think the MPDG exists because some writers create the woman they would have liked when they were younger. To Salia's credit, she does have her own issues and she and Wesley tangle each other up in a way that feels more real. I think we all agree that she needed more characterization. This is the first of six streaming episodes, which we streamed on Twitch back in September. I hope you all enjoyed and if you wanted another stream, let me know.
This week on SFL, Tessa and Tricia finish out their MPDG series with everyone’s favorite band-aid, Penny Lane, played by Kate Hudson. Tessa shares her fear of the dark web and hatred of the Beatles while Tricia wants Jason Lee to “give her that verbal” and talk shit to her all day. They can’t figure out whether Penny Lane is an actual Manic Pixie or for whom, but it doesn’t matter because EVERYONE IS IN THIS MOVIE. And you’ll have to wait until the end to hear it, but Tessa has some musings to share about Penny Lane and rock-n-roll. It’s all happening! On this week's episode, Tessa and Tricia continue their deep dive into the trope of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl with an in-depth look into Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind and the complicated character of Clementine, played by Kate Winslet. The hosts continue to challenge the MPDG sticker that is placed on any quirky female character that exists outside of the norm, lives freely and god forbid, dyes her hair or has a funky haircut. Side note; Tessa won’t like it, but she can act as your very own personal Oprah, while Tricia is more than happy to collect and bury your secrets. Until the next sex toy party...or recording session. She’s just so quirky! This week we’ve chosen three movies that deconstruct the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope. We start with Kevin Smith’s very personal apology to Joey Lauren Adams in Chasing Amy (1997). Next up is a very vulnerable Jim Carrey and an effervescent Kate Winslet in Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). We finish with the adorable Joseph Gordon-Levitt and elfin Zooey Deschanel in Marc Webb’s (500) Days of Summer (2009).Also: Joe misses a Garfield joke. Shaving Ryan’s Privates. Rule 34. Denis Leary. Bi-erasure. Asshole tax. Call Me by Your Name (2017). Strangers in Paradise. Lacuna commercial. Garden State (2004). David Cross. New Girl (2011). Brick (2005). JGL speaks French. Clown Slap. The Graduate (1967). We play a game of “So quirky!” and then Dee tests Joe’s Replicant baseline.
This week on the podcast we're getting into the music loved film, Breakfast at Tiffany's. There's a lot here, including maybe the most racist character in all of cinema, Holly being a prototype for the MPDG, and so many dudes feeling entitled to women. Plus we discuss the response to the recent R. Kelly documentary.
