#elviscostello #lindaronstadt #bozscaggs #bonnieraitt #nicklowe Austin de Lone is an American keyboardist who records and tours with his own bands as well as with other artists, such as Bill Kirchen, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Boz Scaggs, Nick Lowe, Commander Cody, and Loudon Wainwright. De Lone grew up in suburban Philadelphia, taking piano lessons at age 12. His early influences included Ray Charles and George Shearing. After stints as a student at the New England Conservatory of Music, Harvard University, and University of California, Berkeley, he moved to Greenwich Village.[3] While at Harvard, de Lone composed the song "One for One," which was the first single released by Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys. Eggs over Easy In 1969, de Lone formed the band Eggs over Easy with Jack O'Hara and Brien Hopkins.[4] In 1970, Chas Chandler persuaded the band to record in London, but those recordings were not released. A four-night-a-week residency at a pub called the Tally-Ho in Kentish Town lasted more than a year. Eggs over Easy played a blend of blues, country, and rock that became known as pub rock. Regular attendees of their shows included members of Brinsley Schwarz and BBC disc jockey John Peel. In 1972, they returned to California and released their first album Good 'N' Cheap produced by Link Wray. The Moonlighters De Lone moved to Marin, California in 1972, where he met Bill Kirchen, who had been performing with Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. In the late 70s, de Lone joined Kirchen's side-project band, the Moonlighters. Their 1983 album Rush Hour was produced by Nick Lowe. Both de Lone and Kirchen later worked with Lowe and Elvis Costello. De Lone and Kirchen still record and perform together. In 2016, they released their duet album Transatlantica. The Christmas Jug Band De Lone is a member of the Christmas Jug Band, a collection of musicians who have been touring locally each holiday season since 1976, and releasing albums since 1987. The band has included musicians such as Dan Hicks, Tim Eschliman, Jim Rothermel, Lance Dickerson, Brien Hopkins, and Norton Buffalo. Richard de Lone Special Housing Project De Lone coordinates an annual fundraiser for eventual construction of the Richard de Lone Special Housing Project, a residential facility for people with Prader-Willi Syndrome, which de Lone's son Richard is afflicted with. As part of the 2007 event, Elvis Costello reunited with Clover, the band who backed him on his first album My Aim is True.

Loudon Wainwright III is a singer and songwriter. He began his folk career in the late 60s, and released his self-titled debut in 1970. He's occasionally referred to as a novelty singer, but his broad musical catalog has proven that to be untrue. Loudon has recorded 26 studio albums, six compilations, and four live albums. His album High Wide and Handsome: The Charlie Poole Project brought him his first Grammy in 2010 for Best Traditional Folk Album. He recently turned 75 and commemorated this milestone with his newest album called Lifetime Achievement. He stops by to chat about the album and plays some music.

Rainy Days Podcast episode five features a conversation between host Danny Newcomb and Shelby Earl, a Seattle-based songwriter and singer. Shelby Earl's first two albums earned the kind of raves any musician would kill for. Upon hearing her 2011 debut, Burn the Boats, NPR's Ann Powers called Earl her “new favorite songwriter,” and she wasn't alone. Accolades followed from Rolling Stone to the Wall Street Journal and a million music sites in between that positioned her somewhere to the left of Neko Case, a few blocks from Sharon Van Etten, catercorner to Angel Olsen. She toured everywhere, playing with the likes of Loudon Wainwright, Rhett Miller, and Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, who spoke for many people when he said Earl had “the most heartbreakingly beautiful voice in Seattle.” Head to The Homestead, Newcomb's members-only site for bonus clips and content from this conversation. Episode five featuring Shelby Earl is available March 4, 2022, wherever you listen to podcasts and can also be found in video format at DannyNewcombMusic.com/rainy-days-podcast
William Matheny sits down with Brad Goodall on this week's episode of the Whizzbang Podcast. Brad and William discuss old video store memories, his goals for his new record, favorite movies, and finally moving back into the realm of live shows. Check out William's latest release, "Mind For Leaving"! As well as hints of a new record on the way. There is talent you glancingly acknowledge and then there is talent you ignore at your own risk. Consider West Virginia's William Matheny amongst the latter. His solo debut album, Strange Constellations (released 2017 on Misra), contained echoes of the hard won wit and wisdom of Loudon Wainwright, the guitar prowess of James Burton, and the tensile anger of a young Paul Westerberg. Misra then also released the follow-up EP Moon Over Kenova and the 7” Christian Name, both of which occured in 2018. “Christian Name”, in particular, has become lauded as Matheny's signature song in recent years. For those fortunate several who have seen Matheny perform his indelible tunes live, there is no further need of proof. For those not yet in the know, see him at your next opportunity, and prepare to be floored. Follow William Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheWilliamMa... For Billie, it's been a true family affair and she credits her parents and others for giving her the unconditional support she has enjoyed and benefited from thus far in her young life as a performer. Loudon Wainwright III is best known as a folk singer and songwriter, but now he is lending his unique interpretation to the music of the great American songbook on a new album that he recorded with big band bandleader Vince Giordano and his Nighthawk Orchestra. They talk about their deep affection for the music of composers like Irving Berlin and Rodgers & Hart and some of their favorite tracks from their album I’d Rather Lead a Band. Loudon recalls fond memories of his father playing these songs on the family record player when he was boy, and Vince remembers the legendary jazz arranger who inspired his lifelong passion for keeping this this music alive. They reveal what they are doing to keep busy now that the pandemic has prevented them from touring and performing and how they find solace and a few laughs during these troubled times in the hopeful music of the Great Depression and the bawdy lyrics of a rather tragic ukulele player who became the voice of Walt Disney’s Jiminy Cricket. Download or order Loudon Wainwright III and Vince Giordano's wonderful album I'd Rather Lead a Band on iTunes, Spotify, or Amazon. Hot Take 1: “This Time of Year” is about the nostalgia that accompanies the first cool day of fall. It was written at a Mississippi rest-stop as Kevin and friends broke down on the way to an Ole Miss-LSU football game.Hot Take 2: “Rewind” was Kevin’s attempt at writing something that felt more like a hit. It was about a psychobilly mixtape that Kevin listened to nonstop with a girl he had a crush on at the time. It’s a song about longing for the past and the melancholy associated.Hot Take 3: “Collide” started with the title. Despite the imagery of the title, Kevin couldn’t seem to write the song. Once he heard Bruce Springsteen’s “Secret Garden,” he knew that was the template he wanted.Hot Take 4: “At the Stars” was inspired by a Loudon Wainwright song and a specific girl from Kevin’s past that would lean out the window of his car and yell at the stars while they drove. The song is a youthful anti-conformity anthem written as a protest to those telling Kevin how to live.Hot Take 5: “Lifetime” marked a moment in Kevin’s songwriting journey where he realized he could write fiction and didn’t have to solely rely on his own life for inspiration.

Defying standard categorization, singer/songwriter Sloan Wainwright, consistently demonstrates her easy command of a variety of American musical styles — pop, folk, jazz and blues — held together by the melodious tone of her rich contralto, with the end result being a unique and soulful hybrid. Her family tree (brother and folk-music luminary Loudon Wainwright, nephew Rufus Wainwright, nieces Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche) reads like a who’s who of contemporary folk music. Sloan’s incredible gift is not only her unique songwriting ability but also her dramatically voiced rendition of original songs. With a solid and impressive discography of 10 original CD releases to her credit, Sloan continues to write, sing and perform live and has won two songwriting awards at the annual EmPower Posi Music Awards.Sloan’s open spirit and first-hand experience is welcome –year after year– in the musical classrooms of such prestigious song camps as Richard Thompson’s Frets and Refrains, The Swannanoa Gathering, SummerSongs, WUMB Radio’s Summer Acoustic Music Week (SAMW), Winter Acoustic Music Weekend (WAMW), Moab Folk Camp, Cape Cod Songwriting Retreat and emPower Music & Arts Totally Cool Song School.During our conversation, Sloan shares with us about:The importance of simplifying words, song, and structureHow songwriting can help you grieve and move onHow to trust yourself and your instincts (If it’s not right, stay with it and keep working on it)

Canadian-American singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright can justifiably be described as a member of folk royalty. The son of Loudon Wainwright 3rd and the late Kate McGarrigle, he is also the nephew of Anna McGarrigle and brother of Martha Wainwright, all accomplished musicians in their own right. He describes about how he spent the first few weeks of his life sleeping in a guitar-case, sang with his family from an early age, and depended on them during the difficult periods of his life. His teenage years and his twenties heralded difficulties coming to terms with his sexuality and with drug addiction, but he continued to perform and write music throughout the hard times. Now married to artistic director Jorn Wiesbrodt, he is also a father of Lorca, whose mother is the daughter of Leonard Cohen. Obsessed with Verdi, he has composed his own opera, set Shakespeare sonnets to music and composed for the ballet. A friend of mine made an excellent Spotify playlist called "Atmospheric Songs for Travelers" which had some great music from John Martyn, Nick Drake, Wilco & more.(I saved it as my own playlist which is why name is on it if you click the link.) Listening to that collection made me want put together my own mix of vocal music. I don't do vocal mixes very often but I thought it'd be nice to do one now while all that music is swimming around in my head. The songs are very laid back. Most are acoustic. Some new music(Antlers, Bon Iver, Horse Thieves) and some old stuff(John Martyn, Loudon Wainwright, Car Stevens). Somehow the mix ended up with 3 covers in it - Iron & Wine - Love Vigilantes(New Order Cover), Josh Rouse - Straight to Hell(Clash cover) and Radiohead - Wish You Were Here(Pink Floyd cover). All brilliant covers. I have some leftover vocal tunes that might make it into a new mix fairly soon. Then it'll be back to good 'ol low light ambient. For now, enjoy this vocal detour.
