When stored carbs are depleted, your body starts to convert fat into ketones. Studies show that ketones are 28% more efficient than glucose, making them a super-efficient fuel source for the brain and the body. These benefits led H.V.M.N to create Ketone-IQ: a drinkable ketone designed to support energy, focus and endurance.Developed alongside the U.S. military, Ketone-IQ is one of the most powerful ketone supplements on the market. It's designed to elevate your ketone levels for up to 4 hours – much longer than other products. Plus, it's vegan, caffeine free, and compliant with the World Anti-Doping Agency's guidelines. That's a major win for athletes.Ketone-IQ Shots are the best way to get your ketones on the go. Lael Wilcox is an ultra-endurance bike packer from Alaska. In racing, she's excited to compete against the whole field and sometimes wins overall. She's extremely motivated to encourage more women & girls to try bike packing. She organizes a girls cycling mentorship program, women's adventure scholarships & bikepacking challenges. Lael started bicycling in 2008 at age 20, when she and her partner decided to tour the world. Working stints to collect money, the two set out on a bicycle tour of over thirty countries. They started in North America, then traveled in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, logging over 100,000 miles. Lael entered the Holyland Challenge, a 1000-mile unsupported race across Israel. She was both the youngest rider and the only woman. She led the race by 25 miles the first day, and although she did not win the race, she became hooked on endurance racing. In 2016, Lael participated in the 4,400 mile Trans Am Bike Race that crosses the United States from west to east. Lael averaged 235 miles per day for 18 days, averaging less than 5 hours of sleep per night and ending up winning the race outright. In 2018, Lael became only the second female to complete Switzerland's Navad 1000 bikepacking race, finishing in second place. The race features 627 miles distance and 99,770 feet of climbing. Lael's race was commemorated in the film I'm Not Stopping produced by Rugile Kaladyte (who is now her wife!) Have you ever wondered what would happen if you were face to face with a mountain lion in the middle of the night during an ultra-endurance bike race where you were poised to beat the entire field (including the men)? In this interview, professional ultra-endurance cyclist Lael Wilcox discusses this and sooo much more. Lael might be the toughest woman I've interviewed yet — and that's saying a lot. The Alaska (and Tucson) based athlete's many accolades include setting a women's record in the 2015 Tour Divide, setting the fastest women's time on the Baja Divide route in 2015, breaking the men's record on that same course in 2017, winning the 4400 mile TransAm bike race, which has you cycling across the United States, beating everyone including the men, and becoming the 2nd woman to every complete Switzerland's Navad 1000 bikepacking race- where she took second place. Lael doesn't just compete in bikepacking events - she also helps other people enjoy them. In addition to organizing women's bikepacking challenges, she is the founder of Anchorage GRIT, a middle school bicycle mentorship program for 7th grade girls in Anchorage, AK, and she also founded Lael Rides Alaska Scholarship. Plus, she's a total ray of sunshine. If you need a dose of optimism you are going to find it in this interview. Connect with Laelwww.laelwilcox.comhttps://www.instagram.com/laelwilcox/?hl=enhttps://youtu.be/oHEN9WpVaycIn this episode, we talk about…How Lael finds the motivation for things she doesn't necessarily enjoy (ie public speaking, mapping routes and social media) Why Lael has never had VO2 max testing, lactate threshold testing, or trained under the guidance of a coachHow she won the TransAm bikepacking race in 2017 Strategies for eating and sleeping during an ultraendurance race What beginners need to know about bikepackingHow she handled a chance encounter with a mountain lion during a raceThe joy she takes in riding her bike and experiencing nature For full details CLICK HEREIf you want evidence-based insights on all things women's health and fitness, check out my friends at the Omnia Fit podcast Have a question you'd like me to answer on the podcast? Welcome to Episode 47 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring ultra endurance cyclist Lael Wilcox. Lael is one of the best if not THE best ultra endurance cyclists in the world. After years of bike touring around the world, she began racing in 2014 and immediately made a huge splash. In 2015, she smashed the Women's record in the Tour Divide, a 2,745 mile event, despite getting bronchitis and having to get medical treatment in the middle of her race. Not long after her finish, she raced the entire Tour Divide all over again by herself, because she knew she could ride it faster, and she did. In 2016, she was the overall winner of the Trans Am, a 4,200 mile bike race that crosses the US. In 2017 (and again in 2020), she cycled 4500 miles across Alaska, her home state. In 2018, she finished 2nd overall in The Navad 1000, a 1,000 kilometer race with nearly 100,000ft of climbing through the Swiss Alps. And in 2019, she finished 2nd overall in the Silk Road Mountain Race, an 1800 km event in Kyrgystan. Since then, she has continued to crush countless other races. The logistics of planning and executing nutrition for such demanding self-supported, solo endeavors is just mind boggling. We break it all down for you and include plenty of fun stories too, including: Lael's early days as a XC and later, marathon and ultra runnerHer food and travel adventures while bike touring around the worldEverything you ever wanted to know about her nutrition for ultra endurance bike racing How Lael recovers after a hard racing effortLael's everyday eating between racesHer GRIT (Girl's Riding into Tomorrow) bike mentorship programLael is my first ultra endurance cyclist on the podcast, and was SO much fun to interview. Whether you cycle or not, I know you will be inspired by her nutrition story. Thank you so much Lael for your time and the many laughs that we shared!
