Episode 64: Nathan East. One of the most recorded musicians of all time, and truly one of the greatest humans—that's Nathan East. I had the best time hanging out with him, diving into his perspective and stories, and cracking up along the way. We talk about his 40-year relationship with Eric Clapton, recording some of the biggest songs ever, and co-writing one of my personal favorite records. His outlook on life is incredible, and I believe that's a huge part of why he's had nonstop opportunities since his teenage musician years. Nathan has played on over 2,000 recordings with legends like Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Stevie Wonder, George Harrison, Kenny Loggins, Daft Punk, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock…the list goes on and on. As a bassist, he's been half of the groove behind a laundry list of the greatest drummers of all time: Vinnie Colaiuta, Ringo, Ndugu Chancler, Jeff Porcaro, Phil Collins, Harvey Mason, John JR Robinson, and more. I hope you enjoy this conversation with the one-and-only Nathan East! I tried my best to make it special from every other interview he's done. Much love! ‘Go with Elmo Lovano' is a weekly podcast where Elmo interviews creatives and entrepreneurs in music on HOW they push forward every day, got where they are in their careers, manage their personal lives, and share lessons learned and their most important insights. The Business of Creativity Studio musicians were always paid very well to create and make someone else look good. The only time we did receive something for ourselves was when we wrote something, which is the case for the music business, anyway. If you don't write it, if you don't produce it, you don't get paid. If you just play the session, that's a certain fee. I will say for me, I have been rewarded for most of my work because I was not only the musician but also the businessman, and I always made sure that I got paid. Whatever was due to me, I always made sure that I got it. If there was a royalty due to me, I got it. If there were points due me in any situation, I made sure I got them. There were only a couple of situations where someone beat me, and in order to beat me he had to bankrupt his company. More often than not I got paid. This is a business. Creativity is creativity. But the business of creativity is the business of creativity. So, you have to always ensure that when you're creating, you're going to be rewarded for your creativity. I don't want to give it away. You know, I never wanted to be one of those musicians who wanted to go down in history as a poor, broke, starving genius. I never wanted to look at it that way. I wanted to be paid for what I did. That's just common business; it's music, but it's business. I always looked at it from the business perspective. I don't think the industry did me an injustice. I don't think I got ripped off. I made enough noise to make sure I got compensated.

My guest today is a rarified drummer that can vacillate effortlessly between the studio and a live setting. It's not your typical live musical setting. Often there are beatniks and lifers who come to the shows to grab the essence of the live music experience. The one were time and place seem to stand still as even those with anticipatory tendencies are hanging on every note, lyric and fate. Doing this in Casino's and Community Colleges and renovated Cathedrals and Roller Rinks. Flying from LA to SF for a weekend at the Keystone in Palo Alto or the Paramount Theatre in Seattle....then it's back to the studio..... Playing gospel sessions with Michael Omartian swinging the band on a White Horse, always trying to drive the music forward, studying and trusting. Other sessions follow pre click track with Kinky Friedman, live touring with Brian Garofalo and Joan Armitrade and like Ed Greene and Ndugu Chancler, Jim Keltner, Earl Palmer and James Gadson he knew how to hold it down in all music because he came up not knowing anything about anybody else. He met people in person connected musically. The lack of interconnection made it so that if you were hip to music you kept seeing the same cats. No emails or texts or tweets just the human connection- con alma. 2nd Chapter Acts or Linda Ronstadt or Larry Marshall. PART II There's no way for me to formally communicate with Jerry Garcia and John Kahn. They got up and exited this planet quite some time ago. In 1982 The Jerry Garcia Band was looking to find a steady date. Kreutzman was filling in and so was Errico but they wanted someone a little more permanent. Who's the hot guy in town Kahn asks to Michael Stewart. Why don't you look into my guest Stewart replies. He's busy. But still able to fly to Keystone Palo Alto where the irascible Steve Parrish is there to greet him with a Russian Lullaby and the best sounding drums this side of Kat Man Du: My guest held the drum chair with The Jerry Garcia Band for 10 years. A period of time that featured missions in the rain and slouching towards Gomorrah, appearances and roller rinks in E. Setauket NY and 24 minute Shining Stars to younger audiences whose brains were addled with potent marijuana and psychedelia. His drumming style is contagious and his connection with Garcia and Kahn is evident when there might be a lull my guest picks it up with some White Horse gallop that perks up Jerry and there is instant unanimity on stage. He joined the band at the height of Jerry's drug addiction....some might say he would rather be high than on stage playing. My guest can attest to the fact that even in this precoma period Jerry gave it his all and enjoyed challenges from band mates....if you were going to challenge him you better be ready to get pushed back on....my guest did that time and time again until he got that call from the aforementioned Parish about where he wanted his drums sent. As quickly as the liftoff was was as abrupt as the landing. But my guest just dusted himself off and continued on with Bob Dylan. If you know about drumming podcasts, even if only a little bit….it is almost impossible not to know about Drummer’s Resource. With over 360 episodes recorded, Nick Ruffini has never failed to release a podcast every single Monday since November 2013. Some of the guests that Nick has had on the show include Mike Portnoy, Thomas Lang, Ndugu Chancler, Steve Gadd, Chad Smith, Nate Smith and Lenny White. Any of the guests listed above gives you the impression that Nick has made some deep contact within the industry. It is not a small task to book those caliber of shows, as I can relate to the process myself.   So I have to share a small story to explain to you why this episode is pretty special to me as a podcaster. Over a year ago when I started DrumGAB podcast I had never listened to a podcast before. I knew what they were but that is all I knew. So when I decided to develop my own podcast I had no references initially which was a problem because I had no idea if I was doing it correctly and so it was time to start listening to them.   I didn’t know of any drumming podcasts so I went to Google to search and the first result that came up was Drummer’s Resource, so I clicked on it. I can’t remember the first episode I listened to but I do remember my first impressions of the show upon first listening. The host was comfortable, the audio is good, the episode list is stacked with legacy players and I had a lot to learn.   For about three months I listened heavily to the podcast picking up some nuances of flow, the delivery of questions, responding organically through careful listening to the guest and some production stuff. It wasn’t that Drummer’s Resource was a blueprint but I felt that I was gaining experience by listening.   Eventually I reduced my listening to Drummer’s Resource and other podcasts and began isolating myself to my own project so that I could be as original as possible and find my own way in podcasting. I think that was a wise move because I didn’t want other podcasts to be my source of creative inspiration.   It was November of last year when Nick reached out and in our first conversation had said that he was digging what I was doing with the show. I must say that because his show was the first podcast I had ever listened to and originally obsessed with when I started mine, receiving a compliment like that was pretty awesome.   Fast forward up to a couple of weeks ago….I recorded a solo show about social media engagement and influence building and sat on it for a week. The show is actually assembled and I could have published it by now, but I kept holding onto it. Then a lightbulb moment happened and just figured, why not talk to Nick about this stuff? I caught a couple of his live feeds on Instagram and he was talking about this stuff and I figured he would be a great guest to have on to discuss this stuff and besides that I wanted to talk some podcast shop too. That brings us up to the present.   The Episode   I think listeners will recognize a few things relatable to themselves in this episode. One concept that I think people should take away from this episode is not to limit yourself by having a restricted way of thinking. You have to decide how badly you want something and then understand that it is not impossible at all but that it will be difficult and you will have to deal with personal tests that will challenge your passions.   Another strong message in this podcast is how too much information and not enough action can create an unhealthy cycle of over motivating your mind but underachieving as a result.   We also go over the importance of engagement on social media and that big numbers don’t always mean big engagement or meaningful connections. There are more examples of great points being addressed that are beneficial to the modern drummer, whether it is practical application or state of mind, this episode touches on a lot of quality subjects that lead to great conversation with a veteran in the podcast game.   Drummer’s Resource Socials   Instagram | Facebook | Website   DrumGAB Socials   Instagram | Facebook | Website

Byron Miller is emerging from a 12-year recording hiatus with his finest, flawless and most fully realized album as a leader, prophetically titled Psycho Bass. The album – the fourth of his career overall  - contains three of the last recorded performances of George Duke, special veteran guests Ndugu Chancler on drums, guitarist David T. Walker and percussionist Sheila E, as well as introduces the universe to the freshly chocolate minted fierceness of the Psycho Bass Band. Slammin’ from beginning to end, Psycho Bass is a non-stop, no-skip winner that is going to blow listeners minds to become the most beloved, raved over and uplifted album of the year.  Byron has played with Luther Vandross, Ludacris, Beyonce, Roy Ayers, and his mentor, the late George Duke, whom he started playing with at age 19.  Both melodic and percussive, the Byron Miller bass sound is as intoxicating as Pouilly-Fuissé wine from a brown paper sack, unimpeachably funky, instantly recognizable and clearly sourced from someone just a bit touched about the brain. No wonder legend has it that this soul brother is orbiting Earth not just as Byron Miller but also as his alien alias…Psycho Bass. Follow Byron on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
