Earlier this year, on International Women's Day, the Irish electorate was asked to vote in two referendums on changing Ireland's constitution regarding family and care. One of those questions was whether they wished to remove a reference to the role of women in the home, which some view as being out-of-step with modern Irish society. A lot has changed since the constitution was written in 1937. Ireland is now among the highest-ranking countries in Europe for gender equality. However, in both referendums, voters rejected the bid for constitutional change. In this programme, Leanna Byrne travels back to her home city of Dublin to explore Ireland's story when it comes to women, the family and work; speaking to Irish women about their experiences over the decades to now. Naomi Wolf : 'A Woman's Place' (3)When I wrote a book that caused controversy, I saw how big a dragon was this paralysis by niceness."The Beauty Myth" argues that newly rigid ideals of beauty are instruments of a backlash against feminism, designed to lower women's self-esteem for a political purpose. Many positive changes followed the debate. But all that would dwindle away when someone yelled at me -- as, for instance, cosmetic surgeons did on TV, when I raised questions about silicone implants.Oh,no, I'd quail, people are mad at me!Then I read something by the poet Audre Lorde. She'd been diagnosed with breast cancer."I was going to die," she wrote, "sooner or later, whether or not I had even spoken myself. My silences had not protected me. Your silences will not protect you...What are the words you do not yet have? What are the tyrannies you swallow day by day and attempt to make your own, until you will sicken and die of them, still in silence? We have been socialized to respect fear more than our own need for language."I began to ask each time: "What's the worst that could happen to me if I tell this truth?"Unlike women in other countries, our breaking silence is unlikely to have us jailed, "disappeared"or run off the road at night. Our speaking out will irritate some people, get us called bitchy or hypersensitive and disrupt some dinner parties. And then our speaking out will permit other women to speak, until laws are changed and lives are saved and the world is altered forever.Next time, ask: What's the worst that will happen? Then push yourself a little further than you dare.Once you start to speak, people will yell at you. They will interrupt you, put you down and suggest it's personal. And the world won't end.And the speaking will get easier and easier. And you will find you have fallen in love with your own vision, which you may never have realized you had.And you will lose some friends and lovers, and realize you don't miss them. And new ones will find you and cherish you.And you will still flirt and paint your nails, dress up and party, because, as I think Emma Goldman said, "If I can't dance, I don't want to be part of your revolution."And at last you'll know with surpassing certainty that only one thing is more frightening than speaking your truth. And that is not speaking.

Naomi Wolf : 'A Woman's Place' (2)We lack archetypes for the questing young woman, her trials by fire; for how one "becomes a woman" through the chrysalis of education, the difficult passage from one book, one idea to the next.Let's refuse to have our scholarship and our gender pitted against each other. In our definition, the scholar learns woman hood and the woman learns scholarship;Plato and Djuna Barnes, mediated to their own enrichment through the eyes of the female body with its wisdoms and its gifts.I saythat you have already shown courage:Many of you graduate today in spite of the post-traumatic syndrome of acquaintance rape, which one-fourth of female students undergo. Many of you were so weakened by anorexia and bulimia that it took every ounce of your will to get your work in.You negotiated private lives through a mine field of new strains of VD and the ascending shadow of AIDS.Triumphant survivors, you have already "become women."Message No. 2 breaks the ultimate taboo for women.Ask for money in your lives.Expect it. Own it. Learn to use it.Little girls learn a debilitating fear of money - that it's not feminine to insure we are fairly paid for honest work.Meanwhile, women make 68 cents for every male dollar and half of marriages end in divorce, after which women's income drops precipitously. But whatever field your heart decides on, for god's sake get the most specialized training in it you can and hold out hard for just compensation, parental leave and child care.Resist your assignment to the class of highly competent, grossly underpaid women who run the show while others get the case - and the credit.Claim money not out of greed, but so you can tithe to women's political organizations, shelters and educational institutions.Sexist institutions won't yield power if we are just patient long enough. The only language the status quo understands is money, votes and public embarrassment. When you have equity, you have influence- as sponsors, shareholders and alumnae.Use it to open opportunities to women who deserve the chances you've had.Your B. A. does not belong to you alone, just as the earth does not belong to its present tenants alone.Your education was lent to you by women of the past, and you will give some back to living women, and to your daughters seven generations from now.Message No. 3: Never cook for or sleep with anyone who routinely puts you down.Message No. 4: Become goddesses of disobedience.Virginia Woolf once wrote that we must slay the Angel in the House, the censor within.Young women tell me of injustices, from campus rape cover ups to classroom sexism. But at the thought of confrontation, they freeze into niceness. We are told that the worst thing we can do is cause conflict, even in the service of doing right.Antigone is imprisoned.Joan of Arc burns at the stake. And someone might call us unfeminine!

Naomi Wolf : 'A Woman's Place' (1)Even the best of revolutions can go awry when we internalize the attitudes we are fighting. The class of 1992 is graduating into a violent backlash against the advances women have made over the last 20 years. This backlash ranges from a Senator using "The Exorcist" against Anita Hill, to beer commercials with the "Swedish bikini team."Today I want to give you a backlash survival kit, a four-step manual to keep the dragons from taking up residence inside your own heads. My own commencement, at Yale, eight years ago, was the Graduation from Hell. The speaker was Dick Cavett, rumored to have been our president's"brother" in an all-male secret society.Mr. Cavett took the microphone and paled at the sight of hundreds of female about-to-be- Yale graduates."When I was a graduate," I recall he said, "There were no women. The women went to Vassar. At Vassar, they had nude photographs taken of the women in gym class to check their posture. One year the photos were stolen, and turned up for sale in New Haven's red-light district. His punch line, "The photos found no buyers."I'll never forget that moment. There we were, silent in our black gowns, our tassels, our brand new shoes. We dared not break the silence with hisses or boos, out of respect for our families, who'd come so far; and they kept still out of concern for us.Consciously or not, Mr. Cavett was using the beauty myth aspect of the backlash: when women come too close to masculine power, someone will draw critical attention to their bodies. We might be Elis, but we still wouldn't make pornography worth buying. That afternoon, several hundred men were confirmed in the power of a powerful institution. But many of the women felt the shame of the powerless: the choking on silence, the complicity, the helplessness. We were orphaned from the institution.I want to give you the commencement talk that was denied to me.Message No. 1 in your survival kit: redefine "becoming a woman."Today you have "become women."But that sounds odd in ordinary usage. What is usually meant by "You're a real woman [sic] now? "You"become a woman" when you menstruate for the first time, or when you lose your virginity, or when you have a child. These biological definitions are very different from how we say boys become men. One"becomes a man" when he undertakes responsibility, or completes a quest. But you, too, in some ways more than your male friends graduating today, have moved into maturity through a solitary quest for the adult self.

A Woman's Blessing is a ritual that was created by Medicine Woman Lynette Allen in 2017 for 15 very special women - as they met together to drink Ayahuasca - it was a honouring of their courage and bravery to go deep inside themselves. That ritual has grown and developed into a ceremony where we honour, heal and appreciate the girls we were, the women we are now and the women we are yet to become. This beautifully calming meditation spoken by Medicine Woman Lynette Allen was channelled with the plant medicine Cacao, usually a meditation only channelled in ceremonial sacred space, Lynette created a private ceremony where this blessing could be channelled for you - wherever you are. Take 20 minutes, lay down, drink Ceremonial Cacao if you have it - you can find out more about Ceremonial Cacao on her website www.awomansblessing.com - but the most important thing, is to allow yourself the indulgence of this deeply honouring meditation. Made with love, just for you

But how? “Follow me” she said smiling, and led me out past the back of Ratchly Chemical Factory, which I was a little nervous about, then on through the Ratchly woods and up just outside Charry Marry Fun park. It was a beautiful sunny day, about 3pm so I had another hour before making the dinner and bringing it over to Michael in ‘his house’ as he then liked to scream at me. Ah Michelle was goin’ good-o with the stories of how she never got married and that there were no good men in the town anyway. I said I know, I hadn’t seen a proper man in years and only for Floyd I’d have forgotten what a massive mangler looked like. Michelle gaped at me and said: “Oh, you should see what they feel like”. She stared. I didn’t know what to say. That’s when we heard it. (Whistle) Michelle said to follow her. So I did. We ventured in our suede boots and loose scarves to a clearing. There stood four middle-aged men and from a distance they looked like they were out of a Crowded House video from the 80’s. Michelle took my hand. The biggest fella approached, spat the fag from his gob and it was then that I recognised him! It was Brendan! Brendan Barty! The best Gaelic footballer of all St. Saville’s! My old classmate! Oh my God, and was that Gavin Moore behind him? And that’s definitely Clement Gansella! What the Janey? But I said nothing. Then at the rear and scuffing his shoes was a man with a familiar sound.  “Wheeeezeeee!” It was J.J.! Jagger Jordan! I looked at him in horror. We had just met in the morning! But he looked different, as if vacant, as they all lined up. J.J., Brendan, Gavin and Clement! Just like our yearbook from ‘91. A semi-school reunion in the woods outside the Fun Park. “Good woman yourself Michelle, she’s a hefty one!” said Brendan, staring at my buxom motherlode, not seeming to recognise me. And neither did Gavin or Clement. As for J.J.? He just stared ahead with bloodshot eyes. Well, I thought to myself, probably a kilo-a-year since three of them last saw me. Yep, eighteen extra kilos will do that to a girl! And never mind the slabs of black eye-liner I got off Michelle too! Yet there was no hint of them recognising their classmate 18 years on! Were they letting on? And if not, surely I didn’t want to tell them. I was too busy sweating! Which made what was about to happen one of the strangest episodes of my life. And it was a wonder too that J.J. kept his mouth shut about seeing me that morning at the flat! But soon, I was to realise why… “Ready? Sure let’s burst it on!” said Brendan again. He sounded brain damaged. Must have been all those years fighting a football. But I was mesmerised. What were we all doin’ in this field Michelle? Just then I made out the big bent helmet under Brendan’s grey stonewash jeans. His fashion sense was always rubbish. His hammer twitched as Brendan took me by the hand. I jolted. No man had done that in such a gentle way since Floyd. I blinked. Gavin said I was a “very sexy woman” with “big milk and blood.” I don’t know if he had been on drugs the whole time since school but I tell ya, I only went crimson! Then as quick as a snot Clement whips out his skinny aul’ creamy flute and starts riffin’ off strokes! One after the other like a piston engine! Ah! I looked around for Michelle but all I saw was Brendan and Gavin staring at me, each flickin’ their nervous flogs in me face! Oh my God! I was mortified! I hadn’t seen this amount of penis since Michael taped over the wedding video for spite. “Yeah, yeaaaah, take this bitch, have and hold this forever, ya cunt.” Frumpy Dumpster is an Amplevoicepod feature-length Ear-film. A podcast with bite. The fateful story of Lindor Lamb, a middle-aged woman who has just about had enough of men. As a young woman, those were naive care-free days for Lindor, until that is when she encountered Payter Mayhem at Charry Marry Fun Park and school headmaster Sean Wrigley. Further anguish was caused by her husband, the 'Old Bruiser' himself. Frumpy Dumpster is a feature-length explicit and sometime farcical story from Amplevoicepod. Speaking of reality TV, Lena Dunham wrote a brilliant piece for 'The Guardian' about 'Love Island' and 'The Bachelorette' USA admitted she actually got it on not two, but four times in a windmill, firmly cementing herself as AWD's Hero of the Week. Plus, why taking a digital detox could be the best thing we ever do, second only to checking our opinions. When did we all start suddenly knowing everything about everything? In 1942, as World War II was raging, the Gestapo sent out an urgent message: “She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. We must find and destroy her.” That spy was Virginia Hall, a young American woman who—rejected from the Foreign Service because of her gender and prosthetic leg—talked her way behind enemy lines in occupied France and went on to become one of the greatest (and most unlikely) spies in U.S. history. Today I talk with Sonia Purnell, author of the book "A Woman of No Importance." Virginia quickly established a network of spies to blow up bridges and track German troop movements; she recruited and trained guerrilla fighters, arming them with weapons she called in from the skies. As “the limping lady of Lyon” and later “the Madonna of the Mountains,” she became legend. Eluding the Nazis hot on her tail, her face covering WANTED posters throughout Europe, Virginia refused orders to evacuate. Finally—her cover blown and her associates imprisoned or executed—she escaped in a grueling hike over the Pyrenees into Spain. But, adamant that she had “more lives to save,” she dove back in as soon as she could, helping lay the groundwork for the Allied liberation of France.

When you go shopping do you use the self-service checkouts? Or when you pop into a fast food place do you order on the touch- screens rather than go to the counter? If so, your transaction is through computers rather than people. This week the Office of National Statistics says that nearly 1.5 million jobs are at risk because of this type of automation and they're jobs that many women carry out.Victoria, a new ballet being performed at Sadler's Wells in London, tells the remarkable story of Queen Victoria through the eyes of her youngest child and lifelong companion Beatrice. Choreographer and director, Cathy Marston and dramaturg, Uzma Hameed join Jenni to discuss the challenges of recreating a royal icon onstage, and reveal the true story behind Victoria and Beatrice's unique mother-daughter relationship. Zeenat Aman has often been called Bollywood's first sex symbol. She starred in numerous films in the 70s and 80s and redefined the archetypal heroine in Indian cinema. In an era when women played secondary characters, largely obedient wives and lovers, she was drawn to more unconventional roles. From the drug-taking hippie in 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna' to the opportunist who leaves her unemployed lover for a millionaire in 'Roti', she was an inspiration for so many other heroines. She tell us about her illustrious career, Bollywood and the UK Asian Film Festival. Last year Gina Haspel became the first female director of the CIA . She talked about how she stood “on the shoulders of heroines who never sought public acclaim” and was “deeply indebted” to women who challenged stereotypes and broke down barriers to make her appointment possible. One of the women she was referring to was Virginia Hall, an American-turned-British spy who became a legend in espionage and guerrilla warfare. The narration takes it starting point from the classic science-fiction novel 'A Woman in the Edge of Time' by Marge Piercy, continuing the dialogue between its two main characters: a woman from the present and another from the not-so-distant future. Two bodies, which are absent yet have a voice, take part in a reflection on the translation from our time to the future and from image to sound, from physical presence to absence.
