Epidode 311: When I met lifelong musician Red Young on board Delbert McClinton's Sandy Beaches Cruise, I knew I had to interview him. He's had one of those journeyman's careers that ties together all the threads of American music, from pop to R&B to jazz. He's a pianist, Hammond organ specialist, singer, arranger and producer, and at 76 years old, he's seen it all. He's worked with Kinky Friedman, Joan Armatrading, Dolly Parton, Sonny & Cher, Linda Ronstadt, Eric Burdon of the Animals, Marcia Ball, Janiva Magness, and of course Delbert McClinton himself, whom he met in his home town of Fort Worth, TX some sixty years ago. Sit back and enjoy the stories.

Les chansons :- The Pill, Loretta Lynn- Papa Don't Preach, Madonna- Rapid City South Dakota, Kinky Friedman- Spare Parts, Bruce Springsteen.

The Supreme Court ruled that former President Trump has immunity for some of his official acts. How will this affect his federal trial regarding the January 6 insurrection? The Supreme Court recently ruled that cities have the right to break up encampments of unhoused people under anti-camping ordinances. What does the Grants Pass v. Johnson ruling mean for LA? Press Play rebroadcasts our ur last in-person interview at the beginning of the COVID pandemic — it was with musician/humorist Kinky Friedman. He died last week at age 79.
Kinky Friedman, the singer, songwriter, humorist and sometime politician who with his band, the Texas Jewboys, developed an ardent following among alt-country music fans with songs like “They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore” — and whose biting cultural commentary earned him comparisons with Will Rogers and Mark Twain — died on Thursday at his ranch near Austin, Texas. He was 79.The writer Larry Sloman, a close friend, said the cause was complications of Parkinson's disease.Mr. Friedman occupied a singular spot on the fringes of American popular culture, alongside acts like Jello Biafra, the Dead Milkmen and Mojo Nixon. He leered back at the mainstream with songs that blended vaudeville, outlaw country and hokum, a bawdy style of novelty music typified by tracks like “Asshole From El Paso” and “We Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to You.”He toured widely in the 1970s, with his band and solo, including on the second leg of Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue in 1976. He performed on “Saturday Night Live” and at the Grand Ole Opry — Mr. Friedman claimed to be the first Jewish musician to do so (though in fact others, including the fiddler Gene Lowinger, had beat him to it).Another performance, recorded for the TV show “Austin City Limits,” was reported to be so profane that it has never been aired. In the 1980s, after the band broke up, Mr. Friedman turned to writing detective novels, using the same casual irreverence that he brought to the stage in books like “Kill Two Birds and Get Stoned” (2001) and “God Bless John Wayne” (1995)Yet there was a surprising earnestness behind his weirdness. Mr. Friedman founded a ranch for rescue animals. He and his sister, Marcie, ran Echo Hill Camp, which they inherited from their parents and which they offered, free of charge, to children of parents killed while serving in the U.S. military. He spent an increasing amount of time on his ranch. The Echo Hill camp closed in 2013, but three years ago, he and his sister revived it, this time with a focus on helping the children of fallen service members as well as the children of refugee families from Afghanistan.“There was a volunteer who fixed a water heater who I went over to thank,” he told Texas Highways magazine in 2023. “He said, ‘You're welcome. I'm doing it for Jesus.' I told him, ‘I'm doing it for Moses.'”Clay RisenNew York Times

Kinky Friendman 1944-2024In the summer of 2021, Kinky Friedman invited me into his home at Echo Hill Ranch; and graciously let me interview him. We spoke for 3 hours. We had shots. We laughed. He shared stories, and he played (live) a song he had written just the night before. (Banjo, Sophie, and Me).Even though I did not "know" him, he had an impact on me. I shared my experience of that day with anyone who would listen. He let me play four of his songs, when I released that interview. He even PREFERRED that I use the Willie Nelson version of one of them. He was Kind.He was hilarious. He was rough, brash, sincere, & vulnerable.I have thought of my time with him often & will carry those hours with me forever. His interview is some of "my" best work. His 2 part episode rises above most of my endeavors. I have combined them for you (the listener) here.Thank you, Kinkster.Rest easy. -Steve

In 1993, Hillsman took over a floundering Minneapolis mayoral campaign four weeks before election day, resulting in Sharon Sayles-Belton's election as the first African-American and the first woman mayor of Minneapolis, a city comprised of 85 percent white voters. He later shocked the world by helping Jesse “The Body” Ventura become Governor of Minnesota in 1998. When he joined independent candidate Ralph Nader during the 2000 election, his inventive campaign, created on a tiny budget, had the whole country talking and rethinking how we sell our politicians. He worked on independent campaigns for Arianna Huffington for Governor of California in 2003 and Kinky Friedman for Governor in Texas in 2006. And he created the groundbreaking and award-winning “Not There” television ad for Operation Truth (later Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America) featuring Iraq veteran and amputee, Robert Acosta. Bill's innovative creative work has brought him a host of awards, including a Grand EFFIE for the Wellstone campaign. Both USA Today and Business Week named his Wellstone commercials the best political ads of 1990 and his Ventura commercials were honored with five POLLIE Awards from the American Association of Political Consultants. A master of effective TV Ads, marketing and branding, Bill is CEO of North Woods Advertising and has been working in independent politics for a generation–and understands independents better than anyone in America. And for decades, Bill has been a man on a mission to change our political system. His book Run The Other Way is an eye-opening look at the political landscape with a cast of characters that includes Colin Powell, Ross Perot, Donald Trump, Kinky Friedman and Warren Beatty. And with independents in the driver's seat to determine the 2024 Presidential election (and the future of our country) Bill is a wise and experienced leader we all need to hear from. He joins our host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) in this latest episode to share what can be learned from Ventura's campaign 25 years later, how he defines an independent voter, how he sees them defining themselves, and gives an assessment of the entire independent movement landscape ranging from No Labels and Forward to Robert F Kennedy Jr and Cornel West. And Paul asks Bill who he thinks will win the election—and they talk a little baseball and more. No other show is digging into all things independent politics like we are. Every episode of Independent Americans hosted by author, activist and social entrepreneur Paul Rieckhoff is the truth beyond the headlines–and light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. Steve Martin hosts Saturday Night for the very first time! Who had any idea this night that he would go on to do it another 15 times?!! How does Steve fare on his initial outing? Its interesting, to say the least.Kinky Friedman? Oddly enough he does not return to the show. Maybe the fact that they only gave him one song was an early indicator? This is very important episode in the history of the show and worth checking out, especially if you happen to be fan of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and/or beatniks.Subscribe today! Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to journalist Michael Simmons whose father, Matty Simmons was the Chairman of the Board and guiding force behind the National Lampoon empire. It's tough to overstate just how important National Lampoon has been to American comedy and comedy they world over. Launching in the1970s and continuing throughout the 1980s, this satirical magazine begat radio shows, stage plays, television shows and films like Animal House and Vacation, National Lampoon was at the center of mass entertainment for two decades. In fact, National Lampoon is the connective tissue in our comedy DNA that links us to Saturday Night Live, Second City, This is Spinal Tap, The Credibility Gap and much more. So how is it that one of the founders of the very first credit card company, Diners Club and later the publisher of Weight Watchers magazine came to kick off the counter culture comedy quake in the latter half of the 20th century? Ah, therein lies the rub and Michael was there to see it all. From being given rides on the shoulders of basketball star Wilt Chamberlain, to tour managing John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis on the road, to tripping on mushrooms with Rip Torn, Michael Simmons has been there for the good and the not so good times, as Matty Simmons son. Somehow we get around to talking about LA vice squad busts which won him an LA Press Club award, being the scapegoat in interoffice squabbles to playing in Kinky Friedman's band. We get the lowdown on pretty much all things National Lampoon. Matty Simmons was the most mercurial of characters in the Lampoon story, but not anymore. Michael Simmons gives us a firsthand account of being at the genesis of a legendary comedy magazine that became a brand. It's all right here, on this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Take a listen.

Texas has given the world some great songwriters: Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, and Kinky Friedman (yes indeed!!!) among may others. When you discuss one of the most revered Texan songsmiths, (who lived much of his life in Nashville), you really have to discuss two others as well.Welcome to episode 94 of See Hear Podcast.Tim and I were rapt to welcome to the show author and film maker Tamara Saviano. She co directed with her husband Paul Whitfield a documentary about Guy Clark called Without Getting Killed Or Caught. Of course, you can't discuss Guy without talking about his wife Susanna and their friend Townes Van Zandt – their lives were all closely connected. They wrote together, lived together and loved each other deeply. The story has joy, tragedy, art, knives, boats, and a very healthy respect for songwriting. These three and the community of songwriters they worked with in Nashville would share their work, for the sake of the song. The perfect song was king....rivalries be damned.Tamara and Paul have put together a wonderful film that really gets under the skin of what it's like to be devoted to your art so much that it can come at the expense of the relationships around you. This film was a complete joy to watch, and we thank Tamara immensely for being so generous with her time to talk about her work with Guy and about Guy.You can watch the film on demand from https://www.withoutgettingkilledorcaught.com/You can also find the book or ebook wherever you get great reading material from.If you've been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. In this episode, Barney, Mark & Jasper invite counterculture chronicler and "father of country punk" Michael Simmons to join them in RBP's virtual cupboard… all the way from his Culver City lair in small-hours Southern California.Michael talks very entertainingly about his dad Matty's '60s "hippie mag" Cheetah and about National Lampoon, the satirical '70s institution that succeeded it. Yarns about John Belushi and chums lead into Simmons Jr.'s unlikely but lifelong love of country music; his New York band Slewfoot; depping for George Jones at the Bottom Line; and his late '70s stint as one of Kinky Friedman's self-styled "Texas Jewboys".We also hear about our guest's parallel writing career and his move to Los Angeles, from whence he has long contributed to such outlets as the L.A. Weekly and (from the mid-noughties on) MOJO. He reminisces about his teenage Greenwich Village obsession with Bob Dylan, and talks about the liner notes he's penned for three of Bob's Bootleg Series box sets.Mention of a Van Dyke Parks piece Michael wrote in 2013 takes us into clips from John Tobler's long 1973 audio interview with that eccentric L.A. genius & Beach Boys/Randy Newman acolyte. At the end of the episode you will hear amusing banter between Van Dyke and a passing Lowell George (who'd just been interviewed next door by Pete "Family Trees" Frame). After paying our respects to departed heroes Ronnie Spector and Michael Lang, Mark & Jasper take us out with quotes from their favourite new additions to the RBP library. Mark mentions the late Maureen Cleave's 1965 interview with Nina Simone, Lon Goddard's 1970 encounter with Joni Mitchell & Ed Jones' 1975 review of Motörhead at the Roundhouse, while Jasper cites a Simon Reynolds special on "digital maximalism" and Mark Sinker's reflections on COVID and rock nostalgia. Please note that this episode was recorded before news of Meat Loaf's death reached us.Many thanks to special guest Michael Simmons; find his writing on RBP as well as in the Huffington Post and LA Weekly.
