Amy Grant's Heart In Motion soared to the top of the Billboard charts and into the hearts of millions. Host Charlie Peacock weaves a narrative that's part celebration and part surprise. He reminds us that this Album of the Year-nominated pop masterpiece is still as fun as it was transformational. It's a moment to reflect, with a touch of playfulness, on the choices that reshaped Amy's career and the dreams of many young artists. Could future artists love the Christian church and create the songs the whole world sings? Yes, indeed. They could and would. Heart In Motion blazed the trail. At the hallowed Sound Emporium Studios in Nashville, Tennessee, we sit down with a trifecta of musical maestros, including Brown Bannister, Michael Omartian, and Keith Thomas, all Grammy Award-winning record producers. This trio didn't just produce an album, though. They created a cultural phenomenon—one applauded and denounced. Unphased by the criticism, Amy and this trio of producers created a love letter to pop that has been cherished across the generations. Who doesn't want to sing "Baby, Baby" in the shower or dance around the kitchen to "Every Heartbeat?" This episode is as "behind-the-scenes" as it gets. For example, did you know that "Baby, Baby" almost didn't make the album—that Aretha Franklin was going to record it instead? Yep, that sort of stuff. So, let's roll the tape of Heart In Motion, spin some tales, and untangle the chords of its legacy. Join us as we laugh, ponder, and maybe even sing along to the rhythm of an iconic album that continues to move and groove us thirty-plus years and countless heartbeats later. “Music and Meaning” is a production of Christianity Today

For some, the process of making music can appear effortless. For others, bringing one's music to life might take decades. The music welling up in the heart and mind of its creator, like a fine wine, or in this case, one of the finest debut albums, by any artist, in any genre, in many decades. One could say that Tommy Taylor has one of those classic “you don't know me, but you've heard me” musician stories. He has spent years as the drummer and backing vocalist behind singer/songwriter (Grammy and Oscar winner) Christopher Cross and guitarist Eric Johnson. Tommy has also played behind: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Charlie Sexton, Will Sexton, Sara Hickman, Charlie and Bruce Robison, Kelly Willis, Jake Andrews, Jerry Jeff Walker, Ray Benson and Shawn Colvin.Tommy has been preparing himself and his music for years to become the album Across The Stars. It is a recording comprised of what Taylor calls “Chekovian vignettes” - nine cinematic stories filtered through a lifetime of insights and emotions, delivered in his tenor voice that falls somewhere between the lilt of Jackson Browne's and the edge of Don Henley. Taylor's lyrics are incredibly personal and incredibly universal simultaneously. Who hasn't felt like the people in your life were there to “Let You Down?” Taylor describes himself as an observer. However, the songs on this album are filled with the stories and experience you get by living - not by watching. At the end of the 9 songs, you are left with a man's personal catharsis, and you are the richer for having had the experience. After years of his friends and colleagues encouraging Tommy to write his songs and get them recorded, Taylor finally went in the studio and started work on the album. With a little help from Christopher Cross, legendary record producer and keyboardist Michael Omartian (Christopher Cross, Donna Summer, Rod Stewart, Amy Grant, Steely Dan, Glen Campbell, Boz Scaggs, Jerry Garcia and Dolly Parton) agreed to play on Tommy's album.  After finishing his work and hearing the final mixes Michael said: “Man, this is a really good album. Everything sounds great. Wonderful songs and the overall production and musicianship is first rate.” That was on top of praise for Taylor's vocals on various tracks, and his declaration that the song “Everybody's Gonna Let You Down” “sounds like a smash.” You might catch yourself singing along to that chorus the very first time you hear it.Michael Omartian's words are a priceless endorsement, especially for an artist whose debut work has taken a few decades to arrive. But in his Across The Stars liner notes, Taylor explains, “This first effort is a culmination of a lifetime of personal ups and downs, and interests and pursuits.” Isn't that a perfect description of a life well-lived? Across the Stars was released on September 22nd, 2023.https://tommytaylor.com/homeSupport the showThanks for listening for more information or to listen to other podcasts or watch YouTube videos click on this link >https://thetroutshow.com/

I See Men As Trees Walking).

Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. BIO: Legendary recording artist and ground-breaking entertainer Tony Orlando got an early start in show business, reaching national charts at the age of 16 with his recordings of “Halfway to Paradise” and “Bless You.” Orlando became the first vocal artist to sign with Epic Records. The young entertainer continued to set records, eventually becoming one of the youngest vice presidents in the history of CBS Records. After agreeing to record a demo record for a song called “Candida the song became a surprise hit, launching Orlando into the spotlight. Tony Orlando continued producing hit songs, releasing the #1 single “Knock Three Times” in 1971. The single became the top song of 1971, selling over six million copies worldwide. In 1973, Orlando recorded perhaps his most famous song, “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree.” The hit stayed at #1 for a year and soon became an anthem of hope and renewal for American veterans from the Vietnam War to Desert Storm. By 1974, Tony Orlando had developed his very own variety show. Led by Orlando himself along with Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson, the show was the first multi-ethnic variety show on television, running for four seasons. Orlando's career spans over 60 years. Tony currently has a radio show called Saturday Nights with Tony Orlando – Tony spins the greatest hits from the 60s, 70s and beyond every Saturday from 10pm to midnight ET on WABC radio. Also  Tony Orlando's Autobiography Halfway to Paradise by Tony Orlando (Author) and Patsi Bale Cox (Author) Tony has written an autobiography as warm and heartfelt as his songs. Halfway to Paradise is rich with stories from the music world-from doo wop to the disco era, from early recording with Gerry Goffin and Carole King to recent concerts in Branson, Missouri and across the United States. It's also full of behind-the-scenes detail of how it felt to be at the top of the entertainment heap-with his #1-rated CBS show, Tony's life in front of and behind the camera was grand, but sometimes not all it seemed. Orlando succumbed to one of the familiar antidotes to the pressures of a big life: drug use, with its predictable toll on family and friendships. And even as his career was soaring, he was unable to save his best friend Freddie Prinze from a fatal downward spiral. With a return to roots-and to the close-knit family that has always sustained him-Tony restored the order and creativity that have allowed him to thrive through four decades of exuberant entertaining. Warwick's career, which currently celebrates over 50 years, has established her as an international music icon and concert act. Over that time, she has earned 75 charted hit songs and sold over 100 million records.Marie Dionne Warwick, an American singer, actress, and television show host who became a United Nations Global Ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Organization and a United States Ambassador of Health. She began singing professionally in 1961 after being discovered by a young songwriting team, Burt Bacharach and Hal David. She had her first hit in 1962 with “Don't Make Me Over.” Less than a decade later, she had released more than 18 consecutive Top 100 singles, including her classic Bacharach/David recordings, “Walk on By,” “Anyone Who Had a Heart,” “Message to Michael,” "Promises Promises,” “A House is Not a Home,” “Alfie,” “Say a Little Prayer,” “This Girl's in Love With You,” “I'll Never Fall in Love Again,” “Reach Out For Me,” and the theme from “Valley of the Dolls. ”Together, Warwick and her songwriting team of Burt Bacharach & Hal David, accumulated more than 30 hit singles, and close to 20 best-selling albums, during their first decade together.Warwick received her first GRAMMY® Award in 1968 for her mega-hit, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” and a second GRAMMY® in 1970 for the best-selling album, “I'll Never Fall in Love Again.” She became the first African-American solo female artist of her generation to win the prestigious award for Best Contemporary Female Vocalist Performance. This award was only presented to one other legend, Miss Ella Fitzgerald.Other African-American female recording artists certainly earned their share of crossover pop and R&B hits during the 1960′s, however, Warwick preceded the mainstream success of her musical peers by becoming the first such artist to rack up a dozen consecutive Top 100 hit singles from 1963-1966.Warwick's performance at the Olympia Theater in Paris, during a 1963 concert starring the legendary Marlene Dietrich, skyrocketed her to international stardom. As Warwick established herself as a major force in American contemporary music, she gained popularity among European audiences as well. In 1968, she became the first solo African-American artist among her peers to sing before the Queen of England at a Royal Command Performance. Since then, Warwick has performed before numerous kings, queens, presidents and heads of state.Warwick's recordings of songs such as “A House is not a Home,” “Alfie,” ”Valley of the Dolls,” and “The April Fools,” made her a pioneer as one of the first female artists to popularize classic movie themes.Warwick began singing during her childhood years in East Orange, New Jersey, initially in church. Occasionally, she sang as a soloist and fill-in voice for the renowned Drinkard Singers, a group comprised of her mother Lee, along with her aunts, including Aunt Cissy, Whitney Houston's mom, and her uncles. During her teens, Warwick and her sister Dee Dee started their own gospel group, The Gospelaires.Warwick attended The Hartt College of Music in Hartford, Connecticut, and during that time, began making trips to New York to do regular session work. She sang behind many of the biggest recording stars of the 1960′s including Dinah Washington, Sam Taylor, Brook Benton, Chuck Jackson, and Solomon Burke, among many others. It was at this time that a young composer named Burt Bacharach heard her sing during a session for The Drifters and asked her to sing on demos of some new songs he was writing with his new lyricist Hal David. In 1962, one such demo was presented to Scepter Records, which launched a hit-filled 12 -year association with the label.Known as the artist who “bridged the gap,” Warwick's soulful blend of pop, gospel and R&B music transcended race, culture, and musical boundaries. In 1970, Warwick received her second GRAMMY® Award for the best-selling album, “I'll Never Fall In Love Again,” and began her second decade of hits with Warner Bros. Records. She recorded half a dozen albums, with top producers such as Thom Bell, Holland-Dozier-Holland, Jerry Ragavoy, Steve Barri, and Michael Omartian. In 1974, she hit the top of the charts with “Then Came You,” a million-selling duet with The Spinners. She then teamed up with Isaac Hayes for a highly successful world tour, “A Man and a Woman.”In 1976, Warwick signed with Arista Records, beginning a third decade of hit-making. Arista Records label-mate Barry Manilow produced her first Platinum-selling album, “Dionne,” which included back-to-back hits “I'll Never Love This Way Again,” and “Déjà vu.” Both recordings earned GRAMMY® Awards, making Warwick the first female artist to win the Best Female Pop and Best Female R&B Performance Awards.Warwick's 1982 album, “Heartbreaker,” co-produced by Barry Gibb and the Bee Gees, became an international chart-topper. In 1985, she reunited with composer Burt Bacharach and longtime friends Gladys Knight, Elton John and Stevie Wonder to record the landmark song “That's What Friends Are For,” which became a number one hit record around the world and the first recording dedicated to raising awareness and major funds (over $3 Million) for the AIDS cause in support of AMFAR, which Warwick continues to support.Throughout the 1980′s and 1990′s, Warwick collaborated with many of her musical peers, including Johnny Mathis, Smokey Robinson, Luther Vandross, Jeffrey Osborne, Kashif and Stevie Wonder. Warwick was also host of the hit television music show, “Solid Gold.” In addition, she recorded several theme songs, including “Champagne Wishes & Caviar Dreams,” for the popular television series “Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous,” and “The Love Boat,” for the hit series from Aaron Spelling. In November, 2006 Warwick recorded an album of duets, “My Friends & Me,” for Concord Records, a critically acclaimed Gospel album, “Why We Sing,” for Rhino/Warner Records, and a new jazz album, ”Only Trust Your Heart,” a collection of standards, celebrating the music of legendary composer Sammy Cahn for Sony Red/MPCA Records. Additionally, in September 2008, Warwick added “author” to her list of credits with two best-selling children's books, “Say A Little Prayer,” and “Little Man,” and her first best-selling autobiography, “My Life As I See It” for Simon & Schuster.Always one to give back, Warwick has supported and campaigned for many causes and charities close to her heart, including AIDS, The Starlight Foundation, children's hospitals, world hunger, disaster relief and music education for which she has been recognized and honored and has raised millions of dollars. In 1987, she was appointed the first United States Ambassador of Health by President Ronald Reagan and in 2002, served as Global Ambassador for Health and Ambassador for the United Nations' Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), and she continues to serve as Ambassador today. In recognition of her accomplishments and support of education, a New Jersey school was named in her honor, the Dionne Warwick Institute for Economics and Entrepreneurship. Warwick was also a key participating artist in the all-star charity single, “We Are the World,” and in 1984, performed at “Live Aid.”Celebrating 50 years in entertainment, and the 25th Anniversary of “That's What Friends Are For,” Warwick hosted and headlined an all-star benefit concert for World Hunger Day in London. In addition, she was honored by AMFAR in a special reunion performance of “That's What Friends are For,” alongside Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder at AMFAR's Anniversary Gala in New York City. Growing up, my family was not vegetarian, however after my maternal grandmother died of colon cancer, my mother began to investigate how to prevent. This was in the early 70's. Through seminar given by a panel of physicians, one in particular promoted the idea of vegetarianism - so she came home and stopped preparing meat at home- although we ate it when we went out to eat. I had bouts of vegetarianism personally in my younger years and finally gave it up with exception of fish when I had my first child. but I loved dairy - didn't give that up until our production team made the switch to a WFPB diet. ...and the rest is history!

Kurt Howell has been a keyboardist, lead vocalist, songwriter, recording artist, and producer. As you're about to hear, I first met Kurt back in the mid '70's when we played in our high school stage band together. I played trumpet and he played piano and he really influenced me in terms of improvising and playing with emotion and feel. I also hired his amazing teenage cover band to perform for a couple events I was involved with. I later learned that he went on to perform with Southern Pacific, the country rock group that put out five albums and had a series of hits. They were even named New Country Group of the Year at the CMA's. Kurt then put out a solo pop album produced by the well-known Michael Omartian and then formed the group, Burnin' Daylight with Marc Beeson and Sony LeMaire releasing one album that had three singles on the Billboard Country Music Charts including a top 40 hit. We recently reconnected and I got the whole story! I found Kurt to be extremely inspiring being a musician and artist who has truly enjoyed the ride.

Shel Silverstein - Boy Named Sue (1969)  Silverstein introduced it to Johnny Cash at what they used to call a "guitar pull," where musicians would pass a guitar around and play their songs. He was the main songwriter for Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, and he wrote "The Giving Tree".  Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds - Ain't No Woman Like The One I Got (1972) From Discogs: Hallway Symphony was the second studio album of the band Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds, released in 1972. It was their final album for the Dunhill label. That same year, Tommy Reynolds quit the group to form a band called Shango; different session musicians took his place in their touring and recording before Alan Dennison replaced him permanently a year later (but the band kept their original name of "Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds"). In 1973, the band was dropped from Dunhill due to lack of chart success, but they continued touring and performing live in Las Vegas and various colleges, thanks to the continuing radio play of their huge hit "Don't Pull Your Love." The guys who wrote this also smeared their scent on AM radio thusly: "One Tin Soldier" (1971) The Original Caste, (1973) Coven "Don't Pull Your Love" (1971), Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds "Two Divided by Love" (1971), The Grass Roots "Are You Man Enough" (1973), Four Tops (From Shaft in Africa) "Country Boy (You Got Your Feet in L.A.)" (1975), Glen Campbell "It Only Takes a Minute" (1975), Tavares "Nightshift" (1985), Commodores "We Built This City" (1985), Starship Yes, do tell your friends that they recorded "Falling In Love" on Playboy Records, the only #1 for that label.  Peter, Paul, and Mary - And When I Die (1966)    Family Dogg - Arizona (1969) This would be a big solo hit for Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere and the Raiders, who I like. The fellow who wrote this, Kenny Young, also wrote "Under The Boardwalk" by The Drifters.  Johnny Madara & the Juvenaires  - Do The Bop (1957) When Danny & the Juniors were still called The Juvenairs. Initially called "Do the Bop", the song was heard by Dick Clark, who suggested they change the band name to the Juniors and the chorus from "Let's all do the Bop" to "Let's go to the Hop". After performing the song on Clark's show American Bandstand, it gained popularity and went to the top of the US charts, remaining at number one for five weeks. Connie Stevens - Keep Growing Strong (Betcha By Golly Wow) (1970) You couldn't watch TV without seeing Connie Stevens in the '70s. It's strange that such a scattershot discography (she recorded mostly in the early '60s) should feature such a great song. In fact, I don't see mention of it at all on her website, which, I'm sure was last updated years ago. Her daughter Joely was on Ellen (the show, not the woman) and keeps plugging away. Like you and me.  Johnny Rivers - By The Time I Get to Phoenix (1965)  Petula Clark - Call Me (1965)  David Martin - Can't Smile Without You (1975) Gator Creek - Danny’s Song (1970) Anne Murray turned this into a hit a few years later. This song was written by the fella that sang "Footloose" and duetted with Stevie Nicks on "Whenever I Call You Friend". Gator Creek included Michael Omartian, who went on to produce Christopher Cross, Whitney Houston, and Michael Bolton. So...thanks?  PJ Proby - Delilah (1967)  Shorty Long - Devil With The Blue Dress On (1964) From that Wikipedia: Long's biggest hit was "Here Comes the Judge" which in July 1968 reached No. 4 on the R&B charts and No. 8 eight on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was inspired by a comic act on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In about a judge by Pigmeat Markham, whose own "Here Comes the Judge" – a similar song with different lyrics – charted three weeks after Long's, also in July 1968, and reached No. 19 on Billboard. Long was the only Motown artist besides Smokey Robinson who was allowed to produce his own recordings in the 1960s. Marvin Gaye, in David Ritz's biography Divided Soul: The Life & Times of Marvin Gaye, described Shorty Long as "this beautiful cat who had two hits, and then got ignored by Motown." Gaye claimed he "fought for guys like Shorty" while at Motown, since no one ever pushed for these artists. When Holland-Dozier-Holland came to Gaye with a tune, he stated, "Why are you going to produce me? Why don't you produce Shorty Long?" On June 29, 1969, Long and a friend drowned when their boat crashed on the Detroit River in Michigan. Stevie Wonder played the harmonica at his burial and placed it on his casket afterward.  Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In inspired many, many records. One by Freddie Cannon. It's shit. Most of them are.  The Greenbriar Boys - Different Drum (1966) Great song? Meh. Rhymes "knock it" with "market".  Larry Williams - Dizzy Miss Lizzy (1958) The Exciters - Doo Wah Diddy (1963) Best known for their hit single, "Tell Him" which reached #4 on the US charts in February 1963. Thelma Houston - Do You Know Where You're Going To (1973)  This was made into a monster hit as "Love Theme From 'Mahogany'" by Diana Ross in 1975. I guess anything can be a "love theme".    These are the lyrics to the version everyone knows:   Once we were standing still in time,Chasing the fantasies that filled our minds. And you knew how I loved you but my spirit was free,Laughing at the questions that you once asked of me..... Now looking back at all we planned,We let so many dreams just slip through our hands. Why must we wait so long before we seeHow sad the answers to those questions can be?   And here are the previous, somewhat inscrutable lyrics sung by Thelma Houston:    Sometimes, while standing still in time,You think you leave the thoughts that filled your minds. Now we've both been to Stoney Brook, just hanging out, We've had a look and seen what nothing's about..... Now, what am I to say to you? What kind of prayer am I to pray for you?I can only do my best and tell ya what I see,And if you see the rest, please send it to me...   The Moments  - We Don't Cry Out Loud (1976)  Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes - Don't Leave Me This Way (1975) This was made into a monster hit by Thelma Houston in 1976. No matter which version you listen to, if that chorus doesn't make you move and smile, I can't help you.  The Raindrops - Hanky Panky (1963) The Raindrops were an American pop studio group from New York, associated with the Brill Building style of 1960s pop. The group existed from 1963 to 1965 and consisted of Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry who were also both famous songwriters.  The Dells - Higher and Higher (1967)  Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - I Heard It Thru The Grapevine (1966)  The Captain and Tennille - I Write The Songs (1975) Helen Shapiro - It’s My Party (1963)  Richard Kerr - I’ll Never Love This Way Again (1978) Richard Kerr is an English composer, who co-wrote "Mandy", "Looks Like We Made It" and "Somewhere in the Night" (all of which became hit singles for Barry Manilow) and "I'll Never Love This Way Again", for Dionne Warwick. Paul Revere and the Raiders - (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone (1966) Fans consider this the apex of the Revere canon, but I prefer the crazy, desperate intensity of Collage. Still, good, beat-heavy set anchored by "Kicks" and this.    Gene Cotton - Let Your Love Flow (1975)  Neil Sedaka - Love Will Keep Us Together (1973) The original version is pretty good, with some of the electric and unique magic of the Captain and Tennile version that dominated the charts in 1975. I know POACA will not agree, but if you could disassociate the treacly image of these married session players and their TV show, it was an incredible song. And this version was recorded at Strawberry Studios in collaboration with Graham Gouldman, Lol Creme, Kevin Godley, and Eric Stewart, who had formed the band 10cc since their first joint venture with Sedaka on Solitaire. "...in association with 10C.C." Roger Miller - Me and Bobby McGee (1969)  Racey - Kitty (1979)  The Ever-Green Blues - Midnight Confessions (1967) The Brothers Four - Mr. Tambourine Man (1965)

He's a man with many talents and areas of knowledge In this episode, we chat with Michael about how he came to work on such projects as Steely Dan's "Aja", "Katy Lied", and Pretzel Logic", and wound up being the Grammy Award-winning producer on Christopher Cross' debut album. As I continue to wade deeper into how real music is made I have stumbled across cats who were masters of all trades and helped the music grow both sonically and substantively. By this I mean they had the chops to play across the entire musical spectrum, they had gods gifts of love to feel the music. To swing from Rock to Bach to Soul. My guest is one of the cats with huge chops and great feel. Except my guest today is different in that his trades expand far beyond the keyboards. He is one of the most prolific arrangers of strings, of horns of voices. He was one of the early pioneers of The Arp Synthesizer and played those emblematic funky fender Rhodes on so many iconic albums. Coming from the Midwest my guest came to Southern California after crusading on Campus for Christ and became the go to studio keyboardist for any artist no matter how accomplished. Katy Lied, I was half way crucified, on the other side with The Four Tops or knowing a Woman's Work is never done with Edie Sands. He helped create We Are The World with compadre Quincy Jones when this host was just 7 years old. His melodic groove was so conducive to music it stretched from Christian Rock to Boz Scaggs to Loggins and Mussina or driving It was during this time as an in demand studio musician that he joined the stealth Christian label Myrrh and made several albums that features a stormy mix of  ballads and blues with David Kemper galloping in on a White Horse. These albums had a rhythm heritage of Ed Greene and Wilton Felder so the grooves were pulsating with funk and soul holding it down while the messages of a inclusivity was being promoted. My guest was busy making music history and trying to balance the gross excesses of human desire. Desires that our creator could never give us. That's not life. Life is taking your gifts and cultivating them and ultimately actualizing them which is what this host is doing right now. My guest today is a rarified drummer that can vacillate effortlessly between the studio and a live setting. It's not your typical live musical setting. Often there are beatniks and lifers who come to the shows to grab the essence of the live music experience. The one were time and place seem to stand still as even those with anticipatory tendencies are hanging on every note, lyric and fate. Doing this in Casino's and Community Colleges and renovated Cathedrals and Roller Rinks. Flying from LA to SF for a weekend at the Keystone in Palo Alto or the Paramount Theatre in Seattle....then it's back to the studio..... Playing gospel sessions with Michael Omartian swinging the band on a White Horse, always trying to drive the music forward, studying and trusting. Other sessions follow pre click track with Kinky Friedman, live touring with Brian Garofalo and Joan Armitrade and like Ed Greene and Ndugu Chancler, Jim Keltner, Earl Palmer and James Gadson he knew how to hold it down in all music because he came up not knowing anything about anybody else. He met people in person connected musically. The lack of interconnection made it so that if you were hip to music you kept seeing the same cats. No emails or texts or tweets just the human connection- con alma. 2nd Chapter Acts or Linda Ronstadt or Larry Marshall. PART II There's no way for me to formally communicate with Jerry Garcia and John Kahn. They got up and exited this planet quite some time ago. In 1982 The Jerry Garcia Band was looking to find a steady date. Kreutzman was filling in and so was Errico but they wanted someone a little more permanent. Who's the hot guy in town Kahn asks to Michael Stewart. Why don't you look into my guest Stewart replies. He's busy. But still able to fly to Keystone Palo Alto where the irascible Steve Parrish is there to greet him with a Russian Lullaby and the best sounding drums this side of Kat Man Du: My guest held the drum chair with The Jerry Garcia Band for 10 years. A period of time that featured missions in the rain and slouching towards Gomorrah, appearances and roller rinks in E. Setauket NY and 24 minute Shining Stars to younger audiences whose brains were addled with potent marijuana and psychedelia. His drumming style is contagious and his connection with Garcia and Kahn is evident when there might be a lull my guest picks it up with some White Horse gallop that perks up Jerry and there is instant unanimity on stage. He joined the band at the height of Jerry's drug addiction....some might say he would rather be high than on stage playing. My guest can attest to the fact that even in this precoma period Jerry gave it his all and enjoyed challenges from band mates....if you were going to challenge him you better be ready to get pushed back on....my guest did that time and time again until he got that call from the aforementioned Parish about where he wanted his drums sent. As quickly as the liftoff was was as abrupt as the landing. But my guest just dusted himself off and continued on with Bob Dylan. Armageddon Experience - People In Motion (1970) Armageddon was one of the music ministries from Campus Crusade For Christ during the late 1960s into the 1970s. Sometimes incorrectly referred to as "The Armageddon Experience" because of the title of their album, the album was produced by a new, young arrival to Hollywood, Michael Omartian, who wrote many of the songs for the group. He went on to produce records for Christopher Cross, Michael Bolton, Whitney Houston, Rod Stewart, Donna Summer and many more. As I type this, I can just hear the cheesy synths.  Avon - Music To Order Inches By (?) Balsara & His Singing Sitars - Strawberry Fields Forever (1969) Bobby Jameson - Please Little Girl Take This Lollipop (1963)  Bobby Jameson - Gotta Find My Roogalator (1966) Arranged by Frank Zappa.  Bobby Jameson - Know Yourself (1967) Songs of Protest and Anti-Protest Jameson was approached by Mira Records... They had recorded an album, Songs of Protest and Anti-Protest, with another singer-songwriter, Chris Ducey, for release on their mid-price subsidiary Surrey label. The album sleeves had already been printed, with Ducey's name and the track titles, but with a photo showing Brian Jones. However, in the meantime Ducey had entered into another contract with a different company, which meant that Mira were unable to release Ducey's record. The label asked Jameson — who at the time was "broke, homeless, and sleeping on people's couches" — to write and record new songs to match Ducey's song titles, and arranged to have the record sleeves overprinted so that the name "Ducey" would appear as "Lucey". Within two weeks, Jameson wrote the songs, and recorded them with producer Marshall Leib (previously a member of The Teddy Bears with his friend Phil Spector). The record was released without fanfare, with Jameson credited as songwriter, but without any agreement over his legal rights to the recordings. It was later issued on the Joy label in the UK under Jameson's own name, and the title Too Many Mornings. Although Songs of Protest and Anti-Protest was not promoted commercially, and was ignored when first released in late 1965, over the years it acquired a strong reputation. According to Dean McFarlane at Allmusic: This sought after psychedelic pop gem... [is] often compared to Love's Forever Changes, in that it is an intricate exploration of sophisticated arrangements and bleak and twisted lyricism... [It] may have been a little too courageous for its time, tackling blues, exotic - almost lounge arrangements and pure pop psychedelia. Its beauty is in its absolute fracture and collage of a million and one ideas. Richie Unterberger wrote: There aren't many albums of the time that bear an unmistakable Love similarity, but Songs of Protest and Anti-Protest is one of them. Both the vocals and songwriting bear strong recollections of early Arthur Lee, with the melodic but wistful folk-rock chord changes, occasional Latin jazz tempos, occasional gruff folk-blues downbeat atmosphere, probing yet vague lyrics, and oddball production. Part of its appeal to record collectors was its obscurity and that little was known about its creator. Jameson himself commented: "[The album] was a throw away album when it was created. Like it or not, that is a fact. It has, in recent years, taken on a life of its own and for that I am grateful, but it needs to be viewed in real context, to see how it has risen on its own merit to a position it never held when it was created." This week I talking with my friend Dave Cleveland who is one of the top session and touring guitar players in Nashville. He’s played on over 30,000 songs throughout his career for artists like Little Big Town, Steven Curtis Chapman and Miley Cyrus. We are discussing the importance of learning parts correctly when playing for artists, ear training, being a “parts player” not an “everything player." Plus, why you have to play for the song, not for yourself.Show Notes:Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. Talking Points:*I started playing guitar when I was 12 or 13 and by 14 I knew that was all I wanted to do.*I learned to read music when I was in the school jazz band in high school.*I was diligent and self motivated in practicing because I knew that to get to the point I wanted to get to and play like the people I was listening to, it took a lot of work.*I wanted to play with orchestras and symphonies so I had to learn to read notation.*I went to Florida after high school and studied jazz guitar for about a year and learned more about theory and chord voicing, etc.*I got a call from the owner and director of the band TRUTH to be their guitar player and that was my college degree. I got that gig because a guy from a church named Joe Hogue that I met and wrote music with had become the keyboard player and he recommended me.*I was into rock music with the “more is more” attitude and walked into this situation was there was no room for that kind of playing. After the first couple of shows, I thought I was doing a great job until the drummer came to me and told me to listen to the parts again that are on the album because I was playing way too much.*That was the best thing in my life for me to learn and affected my whole career.*You have to play for the song.*When you play on an artist’s record, you have to listen to everything around you. You have to know where your spots are to add and you have to know where to not play.*Being in TRUTH for 3 years helped fine tune that idea of being a “parts player” as opposed to an “everything player.”*Always have a good attitude and treat whatever you’re working as the most important thing you’ve ever done.*Always do your best.*After TRUTH I took a break from playing professionally.*A friend of mine asked me to come check out Nashville, so we came down and hung out with him while he was tracking an album and asked me to overdub a guitar part.*That was the moment that we realized that we should move to Nashville and start playing guitar again professionally.*Within a year I got called by Twila Paris to play for her because a guy that did lights for TRUTH referred me and I got an audition for her and got the gig.*When you have to take other work that is not music related, you are being prepared for something.*When you have down time, don’t neglect your practice time because that is essential for when you show up the next time.*Never waste your down time. If you have down time, there’s a reason and you should dig in and whatever you feel you’re weak in musically you should strengthen that.*After Twila Paris, Steven Curtis Chapman called me to play for him on tour because he saw me play with Twila and liked what I did.*When your touring with high level players, the caliber of musicianship is so amazing and you have to get up to that level.*When you touring with big artists you’re expected to play the parts EXACTLY like the record, unless the artist gives you permission to take a little liberty.*If you audition for a band or artist, you should know not only your guitar part but all the other guitar parts note for note. Be so aware of all the other instrument parts so when you go into the audition, you are over prepared and try to have the exact sound or as close as you can get.*Don’t go into debt, so put money aside now so when you need certain gear for a gig you can get it.*We would rehearse 3-4 weeks before a tour started so we could have the show down so the audience isn’t getting a rehearsal on the first show.*I took what I learned from SCC and went back to Twila Paris’ band and worked it out with her management to rehearse the band for 2 weeks before we even saw Twila so when she walks in it’s like she’s playing along to her album.*There’s nothing more frustrating for an artist than sitting there while players are mumbling through there parts if they don’t have them down.*In today’s world, the band guys need to take it upon themselves to really rehearse before working with the artist because they don’t have the luxury to rehearse for 2 weeks all together before a tour.*Some artists I’ve played with are Steven Curtis Chapman, Twila Paris, TRUTH, Susan Ashton, Amy Grant, Martina McBride, Avalon, Point of Grace and Phillips, Craig and Dean.*I’ve also done studio work because my name started to get out after working with Twila.*People say you can’t be a studio player and a touring player and be successful.*The touring musician has to be the guy who re-creates the parts.*The session musician has to be the creator of the parts.*I’ve been able to do both so it’s allowed me to be successful in ways that others haven’t.*I try to get myself in the mindset each day like I’m just picking up the guitar for the first time and it’s the first song I’ve ever played on so that gets me excited.*Doing both is not as hard today because of technology. You can be on the road touring and track a part on your computer and email it where it needs to go.*You have to know how to record yourself.*You have to be skilled.*If you’re lacking in some area, get better at that.*If your ear is not well adapted to picking up lines in songs, get some ear training.*I have an online guitar teaching course: www.davecleveland.com Dave Cleveland is a first call session guitar player in Nashville, Tennessee. Additionally, Warwick will begin a highly anticipated concert residency in Las Vegas on April 4, 2019 Scintillating, soothing and sensual best describe the familiar and legendary voice of five-time GRAMMY® Award winning music legend, DIONNE WARWICK, who has become a cornerstone of American pop music and culture. Warwick’s career, which currently celebrates over 50 years, has established her as an international music icon and concert act. Over that time, she has earned 75 charted hit songs and sold over 100 million records. Marie Dionne Warwick, an American singer, actress, and television show host who became a United Nations Global Ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Organization and a United States Ambassador of Health. She began singing professionally in 1961 after being discovered by a young songwriting team, Burt Bacharach and Hal David. She had her first hit in 1962 with “Don’t Make Me Over.” Less than a decade later, she had released more than 18 consecutive Top 100 singles, including her classic Bacharach/David recordings, “Walk on By,” “Anyone Who Had a Heart,” “Message to Michael,” "Promises Promises,” “A House is Not a Home,” “Alfie,” “Say a Little Prayer,” “This Girl’s in Love With You,” “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” “Reach Out For Me,” and the theme from “Valley of the Dolls. ”Together, Warwick and her songwriting team of Burt Bacharach & Hal David, accumulated more than 30 hit singles, and close to 20 best-selling albums, during their first decade together. Warwick received her first GRAMMY® Award in 1968 for her mega-hit, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” and a second GRAMMY® in 1970 for the best-selling album, “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again.” She became the first African-American solo female artist of her generation to win the prestigious award for Best Contemporary Female Vocalist Performance. This award was only presented to one other legend, Miss Ella Fitzgerald. Other African-American female recording artists certainly earned their share of crossover pop and R&B hits during the 1960′s, however, Warwick preceded the mainstream success of her musical peers by becoming the first such artist to rack up a dozen consecutive Top 100 hit singles from 1963-1966. Warwick’s performance at the Olympia Theater in Paris, during a 1963 concert starring the legendary Marlene Dietrich, skyrocketed her to international stardom. As Warwick established herself as a major force in American contemporary music, she gained popularity among European audiences as well. In 1968, she became the first solo African-American artist among her peers to sing before the Queen of England at a Royal Command Performance. Since then, Warwick has performed before numerous kings, queens, presidents and heads of state. Warwick’s recordings of songs such as “A House is not a Home,” “Alfie,” ”Valley of the Dolls,” and “The April Fools,” made her a pioneer as one of the first female artists to popularize classic movie themes. Warwick began singing during her childhood years in East Orange, New Jersey, initially in church. Occasionally, she sang as a soloist and fill-in voice for the renowned Drinkard Singers, a group comprised of her mother Lee, along with her aunts, including Aunt Cissy, Whitney Houston’s mom, and her uncles. During her teens, Warwick and her sister Dee Dee started their own gospel group, The Gospelaires. Warwick attended The Hartt College of Music in Hartford, Connecticut, and during that time, began making trips to New York to do regular session work. In 1962, one such demo was presented to Scepter Records, which launched a hit-filled 12 -year association with the label. Known as the artist who “bridged the gap,” Warwick’s soulful blend of pop, gospel and R&B music transcended race, culture, and musical boundaries. In 1970, Warwick received her second GRAMMY® Award for the best-selling album, “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again,” and began her second decade of hits with Warner Bros. She then teamed up with Isaac Hayes for a highly successful world tour, “A Man and a Woman.” In 1976, Warwick signed with Arista Records, beginning a third decade of hit-making. Arista Records label-mate Barry Manilow produced her first Platinum-selling album, “Dionne,” which included back-to-back hits “I’ll Never Love This Way Again,” and “Déjà vu.” Both recordings earned GRAMMY® Awards, making Warwick the first female artist to win the Best Female Pop and Best Female R&B Performance Awards. Warwick’s 1982 album, “Heartbreaker,” co-produced by Barry Gibb and the Bee Gees, became an international chart-topper. In 1985, she reunited with composer Burt Bacharach and longtime friends Gladys Knight, Elton John and Stevie Wonder to record the landmark song “That’s What Friends Are For,” which became a number one hit record around the world and the first recording dedicated to raising awareness and major funds (over $3 Million) for the AIDS cause in support of AMFAR, which Warwick continues to support. Throughout the 1980′s and 1990′s, Warwick collaborated with many of her musical peers, including Johnny Mathis, Smokey Robinson, Luther Vandross, Jeffrey Osborne, Kashif and Stevie Wonder. Additionally, in September 2008, Warwick added “author” to her list of credits with two best-selling children’s books, “Say A Little Prayer,” and “Little Man,” and her first best-selling autobiography, “My Life As I See It” for Simon & Schuster. Always one to give back, Warwick has supported and campaigned for many causes and charities close to her heart, including AIDS, The Starlight Foundation, children’s hospitals, world hunger, disaster relief and music education for which she has been recognized and honored and has raised millions of dollars. In 1987, she was appointed the first United States Ambassador of Health by President Ronald Reagan and in 2002, served as Global Ambassador for Health and Ambassador for the United Nations’ Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), and she continues to serve as Ambassador today. In recognition of her accomplishments and support of education, a New Jersey school was named in her honor, the Dionne Warwick Institute for Economics and Entrepreneurship. Warwick was also a key participating artist in the all-star charity single, “We Are the World,” and in 1984, performed at “Live Aid.” Celebrating 50 years in entertainment, and the 25th Anniversary of “That’s What Friends Are For,” Warwick hosted and headlined an all-star benefit concert for World Hunger Day in London. In addition, she was honored by AMFAR in a special reunion performance of “That’s What Friends are For,” alongside Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder at AMFAR’s Anniversary Gala in New York City. Warwick also received the prestigious 2011 Steve Chase Humanitarian Arts & Activism Award by the Desert Aids Project and was recognized for her stellar career by Clive Davis at his legendary Pre-GRAMMY® Party in Los Angeles. Adding to her list of landmark honors, Warwick was a 2013 recipient of the coveted Ellis Island Medal of Honor in New York and was inducted into the 2013 New Jersey Hall of Fame. On March 26, 2012, Warwick was inducted into the GRAMMY® Museum in Los Angeles, where a special 50th Anniversary exhibit was unveiled and a historic program and performance was held in the Clive Davis Theater. Additionally, a panel discussion with Clive Davis and Burt Bacharach was hosted by GRAMMY® Museum Executive Director, Bob Santelli. Commemorating her 50th Anniversary, Warwick released a much-anticipated studio album in 2013, entitled “NOW.” Produced by the legendary Phil Ramone, the anniversary album was nominated for a 2014 GRAMMY® Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. “NOW” featured special never-before-released material written by her longtime friends and musical collaborators, Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Most recently, Warwick released a much anticipated star-studded duets album titled “Feels So Good,” featuring collaborations with some of today’s greatest artists including Alicia Keys, Jamie Foxx, Billy Ray Cyrus, Ne-Yo, Gladys Knight, Cee Lo Green, Cyndi Lauper and many more. “Feels So Good” was released through Bright Music Records, Caroline and Capitol. Warwick’s pride and joy are her two sons, singer/recording artist David Elliott and award-winning music producer Damon Elliott, and her family. ~ DionneWarwickonLine.com © 2019 Building Abundant Success!! 2019 All Rights Reserved Join Me on Facebook @ Facebook.com/BuildingAbundantSuccess

At the age of thirteen, Stephen Bishop found himself at a crossroads. A clarinetist with hopes of becoming a History teacher, he was forever changed after watching the Beatles one night on "The Ed Sullivan Show." His brother Denny bought Stephen an electric guitar and a "Mel Bay" chordbook and turned his stereo into an amp so Stephen could play music. Stephen began to learn to play guitar and make up his own chords as well, writing his first song, "Surf's Turf.." a pathetic sounding intrumental. He formed a band called, "The Weeds" and began to play at local fraternity parties incorporating his own original songs with various songs from top 40...Stephen made a trip to Los Angeles at 17... eventually landing a publishing deal at $50 a week. After years of trying to make it, a good friend, Leah Kunkel got some of Stephen's songs to Art Garfunkel, who wound up recording two of them on his gold recording, "Breakaway." He started playing around town singing his songs in person for artists like, Barbra Streisand...Bette Midler..Diana Ross." Shortly thereafter, he was signed to ABC Records who released his first album, "Careless." He had two hits from the album.."Save It For a Rainy Day," and "On and On".. Soon the album went gold, as well as his next album, "Bish." He sang the hit theme,"It Might Be You," for the movie, "Tootsie," as well as writing and/or singing 13 other films including, "Animal House."and composing "Separate Lives," for the film "White Nights." His songs have been recorded by: Beyonce, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Barbra Streisand, Art Garfunkel, Steve Perry, Stephanie Mills, Kenny Loggins, Johnny Mathis, Phoebe Snow, David Crosby, The Four Tops, Aswad and Pavarotti. He appeared as the "Charming Guitar Player" in "Animal House," wherein John Belushi slammed his guitar to smithereens in the Toga Party scene. Stephen was nominated for two Grammys and awarded an Oscar nomination for his song, "Separate Lives," which became a No. 1 hit for Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin. In Eric Clapton's autobiography, Eric mentions Stephen as "One of the great singer songwriters." Stephen just released his 25 year Anniversary Album, "Bowling in Paris," Remastered with new artwork and the album features Sting on bass and vocals, Eric Clapton and Phil Collins and is produced by Michael Omartian and Phil Collins.Stephen has released two new albums last year.."Be Here Then," a new studio album and "Stephen Bishop LIVE," an album of his hits and popular favorites as well as a few new songs. He has also returned from a successful tour in Asia last year.. "His newest single is called, "Pretty Baby." from his new studio Album, "be here then." Recently, Beyonce released her Platinum Beyonce Album which includes, "Ring Off.." co-written by Stephen and Beyonce. Stephen just released his newest album, “Blueprint,” Produced by Jon Gilutin.

Felicia Farerre will be joining me on this show  and I am really excited as her Music has made a Impact on my life as well as many others. From the early start of singing alongside family to working with major brands has been a lot of dedicated focus and hard work even though a fairy tale come true. Some of the highlights have been enhancing the live and/or recorded vocals of Usher, Alan Jackson, John Tesh, Orla Fallon, David Archuleta, Amy Grant (harmonizing with country legend, Vince Gill on her Simple Things record), #1 Billboard Chart recognition with The Taliesin Orchestra, countless non-secular projects, and working with writers and/or producers such as Keith Thomas, Bill Whittington, Brown Bannister, Michael Omartian, Chance Scoggins, Cheryl Rogers, Trammell Starks, Jason Deere, Robin Scoffield, Sam Mizell, Jeremy Bose, Steve Siler, Jim Frazier, Doug Beiden, Michael Garvin, Kent Hooper, Joe Beck, Pete Kipley, Chris Harris, Joe Sowrey, Jo Blankenburg, Jennifer Thomas, Joseph LoDuca, Dan Shea, Rick Priddis, the entire original cast of characters at Non-Stop Productions, Todd Sorensen, Michael Dowdle, Sam Cardon, Kurt Bestor, Don Stirling, Randy Kartchner, Arlen Card, Michael McLean, Janice Kapp Perry, Senator Orin Hatch, Mike Green, (the late) Rich Gibbons, as well as other family, and my dear brother and friend Barry Gibbons. Dream Garden is her first solo effort under her  name, intended for international reach and market place. . There were many changes along the way. So much so that I just sat with the music for a solid span of time to fully understand all that had transpired through it and around it. Beautiful findings, discoveries and the heart of my life  breaking open during this time. Dream Garden is only the beginning of my new music reality. There is so much more that is to come, both in the way of additions to the EP, and  brand new solo and collaborative records.

A perennial classic producer and session musician, our guest really needs no introduction…or at least one paragraph doesn’t do his career justice. We will say that he is the first producer in recording history to have number one records in three separate decades… the 70s, 80s, and 90s. In 1980, he was nominated for 10 Grammy Awards, three of which he won for his work on Christopher Cross’ debut album, Sailing. (Talk about a classic album.) In the 80s he was nominated twice for producer of the year. In 1991 he was nominated for album of the year for Amy Grant’s Heart in Motion and in ’94 he even produced the soundtrack album for the Summer Olympic Games. He’s still in demand as a producer, but is now spending more time discovering new talent. Over his lengthy and successful career, he’s worked with names such as: Bela Fleck, Rod Stewart, Michael Bolton, Whitney Houston, Willie Nelson, Reba, Roberta Flack, Alison Krauss, and a recent Inside MusiCast guest, David Pack. Inside MusiCast welcomes a true classic — Michael Omartian.
